Battlestar: The Plan Secrets Teased!
Jane Espenson, who wrote the upcoming movie Battlestar Galactica: The Plan, said that the telefilm will retell the initial story of the SCI FI Channel series, but from the perspective of the Cylons, and that it will take advantage of revelations that will come in the upcoming new episodes of the show's fourth and final season.
"The events of The Plan are the events that you've seen ... in the show, from the miniseries to almost the end of season two," Espenson said in an exclusive interview. "So it's that chunk of time, but sort of seen with the Cylon perspective. So you're going to see a lot of stuff that was going on that you weren't aware of at the time: on Caprica, in the fleet. ... This was the time when the Cylons, as depicted in the original show, ... were very mysterious, enemies that would come out of the darkness and retreat. And this is ... what were they really doing all that time: what was the internal stuff. ... A lot of loose ends are tied up, a lot of questions are asked that you don't even know you have."
The movie--the second stand-alone telefilm based on the Peabody Award-winning show--deals with all the mythology's secrets. "If you had a copy now, you might feel that you could go ahead and watch it, because it's about stuff that already happened," Espenson said. "But don't do it. Of course, you don't have a copy now, because there isn't even a cut yet. ... But it's very much designed to be watched after the run of the series, because it definitely relies on stuff you don't learn until much later."
The Plan stars Edward James Olmos, who also directed; Dean Stockwell as Brother Cavil; Michael Hogan as Col. Tigh; and Michael Trucco as Anders, among others.
Espenson said that Olmos was very collaborative. "He and I had a lot of very long sessions of going through the script line by line, Eddie Olmos reading the whole thing out loud, just amazing as, you know, a one-man show every night," she said. "And just like going, 'Listen to this line, wouldn't this be better like this? Wouldn't this be better like this? Are you sure that we need this in this scene?' Just incredibly insightful, just working through it with Eddie, and [we] made a ton of changes in the preproduction phase and ended up with a really tight script that we filmed sort of as they were demolishing the sets out from under us. And [we] ended up with something that I think is so much better than our highest hopes had been for what this movie could be. It really sort of caps off the show."
Battlestar Galactica: The Plan is slated to air in June 2009. Battlestar Galactica returns to SCI FI at 10 p.m. ET/PT on Jan. 16, 2009, with the remaining episodes of its fourth and final season. --Patrick Lee, News
Minor spoiler - in so much as the future movie for TV and DVD
Per the Feb. 09 Sci-Fi Magazine (pg 30) there will be a follow-on two-hour movie titled Battlestar Galactica: The Plan presented yet in 2009, followed by DVD sales. We all know the Cylons had a plan, but we never heard what "the plan" is. So this movie will tell the story from the Cylon perspective. It is intended "to be the last piece" according to Kathie Huddleston, the author of the sidebar article. It will take us through some of the early events with an eye on what the Cylons were doing at the time, but will also show other events not yet told. Dean Stockwell will take center stage as Number One, along with Michael Trucco as Sam Anders, and Aaron Douglas as Chief Galen Tyrol. A number of the other cast members will be featured as well. Edward James Olmos will direct! Executive producer and writer is Jane Eperson. According to Jane "it is an absolute feast for the hard-core fans, but is also going to work for the casual fans. I put a lot of humor in it, and it's got an interesting mix of tone, of darkness and funny, that I think is going to appeal." Spoken like a true Hollywood person.

New trailer. Remember, this comes out next week on DVD & Blu-Ray only (for now).

I must've missed something, I was certain this was going to be on TV before it came out on DVD. I guess it doesn't really matter at the end of the day.
I am really excited about this one....and the cover of Maxim featuring Tricia Helfer and Grace Parks has absolutely nothing to do with my enthusiasm.....
I have been going through #6 withdrawal for the past few months....

I would guess it will end up on SyFy, eventually. They did the same thing with "Caprica." DVD first, then later on they broadcast it.
I've noticed copies of this movie appearing various places on the net yesterday. I guess leaks are inevitable, nowadays

yeah, that's the nature of the beast. A week before anything drops, the internet is already distributing it.

Yeah, that's called piracy. Arrhhh, matey!
Watching that trailer really brings back the magic! I almost feel like re-watching the whole series again. :)

Indeed, and sorely tempting as well when watching is just a click away in lieu of waiting another week and a half for the hard copy, but then I think that karma is a b***h and my moral fortitude gets the better of me.
My justification is I am paying for it either way and I'd be skipping the commercials anyways.
Only a week to go until The Plan hits the shelves! Future Shop has got the DVD listed at $22.99 up here. SO I figure that maybe I can make some money off this. I've lent my BSG discs out to at least 6 different people so if I charge them all $5 rental for this one all come out on top(maybe not after taxes) LOL
Nice to have a fix of BSG until Caprica starts, last I heard it's slated for early 2010?

Start charging late fees and before long you'll be able to open a franchise
Well, the wife and I watched The Plan last night. Unfortunately I can't say I was that impressed. It was ok, but definitely not what I was hoping for. Even now I'm finding it hard to think of things to say cause nothing particularly stood out.
[spoiler]There was an awful lot of Dean Stockwell. I was disappointed that it only covered part of the series, I was expecting it to take us from the beginning to the end. When we were half way through the show and only at the end of season 1 I was a little confused about what was going on.
I suppose what it was lacking for me was any real excitement. There were virtually no battle scenes, I've always loved the vipercentric episodes.
It filled in some of the missing information but wasn't as revealing as I hoped for.
If I were on the Tuning Into Sci Fi Podcast I'd have to give this show a "see it sometime".

Yeah, I have been watching it in bits and drabs, and I cannot say that I am too impressed.
This is from a huge BSG fan. At any rate, at least I got to see more #6....
Finished watching this today. I kind of enjoyed it - but other than the nudity - I don't see how a casual fan would enjoy seeing this movie. It jumped around, and unless you are familiar with every episode, I think you would get lost easily.
That being said....the more #6 I see...the happier I am! :0
Already have a thread for this.. will combine posts.
I watched it last night and I enjoyed it pretty much. It was obviously meant for fans since there really was no way you could follow this if you didn't already know the story. I thought they did a good job of combining old and new footage. The destruction of the colonies near the start was pretty cool to watch - if not depressing in a way. I expected a bit more on "The Plan" itself and also a bit more from the other Cylon models. We got to see a little bit but not as much as I would have liked. It seemed to really center on the actors they could get to do it. Overall it was ok, but I almost would have preferred just sort of an "untold story" like Razor was instead of this. Hopefully we will get more BSG like that some time.
- Oh, and there wasn't nearly enough Katee!
Well, this finally hit the airwaves last night, and I agree that it was a bit of a disappointment.
[spoiler]
No D'anna? At all?!?!?
Seemed like "The Cavell Show"
Was Cavell kissing Sharon *really* necessary? Ew!
Seeing some of the cut footage was interesting, but there wasn't enough to make up for the lack of explanation of *why* the cylons wanted to kill all humans.

I watched it on syfy - a bit disturbing in some places but I liked the "behind-the-scenes" moments that helped to explain the events on BSG.

This was explained during the series several times about humanity having the habit of destroying their creator. The Cylons simply followed suit. It's pretty much like the various early religions now called mythology. Take Earth for example. When the new gods or creations come on the scene, they tended to kill their predecessors. The Olympians killed the titans then humanity turned the Olympians into myth. Perhaps it's fear? If something can make us, perhaps they can unmake use and the only way to stop that is to stop them.
