Title: Full Episode vs Clips
Post by: Darth Gaos on August 14, 2008, 12:20:32 PM
A question for me boardmates.

Does anyone have a preference for which type of podcast Rico does?  Do you like the full episode review or the clip shows?  I personally think Rico seems to do a great mix of both.

And a question or two for the great Treks In SciFi guru himself.  Is the prep any different between the two types of shows?  Do you watch the episodes and take notes?  I have always just been curious on how you go about choosing the clips or deciding what to comment on.

I've talked about my opinions on this before. I used to like the clip shows more, however the more full commentaries that Rico does, the better they get. I found he used to not speak enough, getting lost in watching the episode. More recent full commentaries have come a long way. Now I like them both equally.

Clip shows allow for more variety, collectible reviews, movie talk etc. With the full commentaries you know that 40-45 mins of the show will be used up off the bat so it'll conecnetrate a lot more on the episode.

I find, I love the full episode commentaries a lot more.  I tune in a lot more then.  Sometimes with clip reviews, I don't get into that much.  (No offense Rico).  But then again, I'm a sucker for full movie commentaries.  I've gone through most of the LOTR commentaries.  (The directors, producers, actors, etc).  So I find I love it more when Rico does full episode commentary.

I enjoy full commentaries but for Treks in Sci Fi podcast I prefer the clips shows. I feel we get more info in the clips shows.

Yeah, I think I am a bit more partial to the clips as it allows for a more thorough vetting of the episode.

I'm a fan of the full commentaries, but I also like the clip show.  I find it interesting to see which clips he'll use for each show.

I find that with the full length commentaries, I visualise the scene a lot more and find it a richer experience and when Rico does a clip show, I find myself wondering if he will choose the same clips I would and inevitably then thinking " why didn't he choose that clip? It's a brilliant clip".
All in all I would plump for the clips shows as It does seem to offer a wider content. If we were to have a full length commentary plus all the other info, It would be just be more work for Rico, the poor chap.  ;D

Well, I'd say the full commentaries take a little less prep time (don't have to collect the clips) but they take a little more when I record the show.  It's not too different.  I generally have looked over some references and have a few notes of things I want to mention in either style.  For now I plan on continuing to mix it up.  Sometimes clips, sometimes full episodes.  Of course, when I cover a movie or do a special type podcast those always require just clips.  As far as how I choose clips, of course it's based on what I see are some of the highlights and key points of the episode.  One other factor that will push me to doing a full commentary is if I find I'm ending up gathering a lot of clips.  That usually means I should just play the whole show.

Anyway, hopefully I end up pleasing the most people by alternating a bit between the styles.

I personally like both types of shows but the clip shows seem to get more into the meat of an episode where full episodes have a lot of unnecessary material. However, I'll listen no matter what!

I'm with Mr. Moyer. It is Rico and the folks in the community's contributions that make this so special. Jen and Angela's Hijack podcast is a example. As long as we hold true to our love of SciFI with a commitment for it to be interesting/fun, with the talent that is currently present here, things will always work themselves out.

I'm pretty much with Rick.

I think we get more background from the clip shows but the full commentaries are more enjoyable in other ways. Mixing it up as Rico's done so far provides the best of both worlds as far as I'm concerned.
