I had heard they were making this a while ago but nothing since.. I had no idea it was already shot.
I haven't heard anything recently.. I feel like this came out of left field.

This was premiered at Comic Con...
There have been a number of rumblings in the film news world about another Tron film being released by Disney, including word that it would be in 3D, and even that Jeff Bridges was going to be hearing a pitch about a sequel. No actual information had been confirmed though.
Until now.
Courtesy of the folks at Disney, Comic Con got a surprise look at a scene from the film. The teaser starts off with the camera panning through a strange stylized landscape. At this point, nobody knew what we were watching, so only silence filled the hall. And then, two blue/yellow suit-wearing motorcyclists burst into frame, engaged in a frenzy of a race. Audiences erupted in applause.
The race continues to grow heated between the two players until the yellow guy finds a way to swerve in front of the blue, leaving his yellow race trail behind him. The blue guy smashes into it and causes sort of an electric ripple, launching him over the edge of the track. He grabs on a ledge, just barely holding on.
We then see a bearded Jeff Bridges in his house, sitting calmly with his legs crossed.
Back to the virtual world, we see the yellow guy standing over the blue. His visor lifts up, revealing Bridges underneath. The blue guy shouts, "This is just a game!" Bridges looks down, smiles, and pulls out a glowing yellow circular disc (fans will probably know the name of this thing). Looking at the camera, he swings the disc down violently and the title lights up on screen: Tr2n.
Stupid title aside, this clip was easily enough to highten my anticipation for this film. Not only is it just incredibly awesome to see Jeff Bridges go back to a character he played before he was a household name, but the way the graphics have been updated is slick without being unfaithful to the original. In a way, I've been convinced the sequel is no longer an unnecessary Hollywood cashgrab, because the contrast between the old and the new is very reminiscent of what recent generations have been experiencing with constantly updated video game graphics/technology.
Apparently, it will be about a year until any other footage for the film will be seen. Hopefully this means Disney is planning on having a full-on panel presentation next year.
This is hard to see detail in, but here's the trailer via YouTube....
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7vItiMW7jGg
It going to be interesting to see how the movie looks. The computer graphics world has gone by leaps and bounds since the original movie. I think I have been inspired the pull Tron out tonight and put it in the DVD player tonight.
Jeff Bridges on the Tron Sequel
Source: The Guardian
October 6, 2008
The Guardian spoke recently to Jeff Bridges about the anticipated Tron sequel. Here are his quotes on the project:
Is that why you signed up for the new Tron movie?
Yeah, that's another unique, wild experience that was too good to turn down. Engaging in that world again feels just like it did all that time ago. Basically, I'm still a child, I love being childlike, and here was another chance to play with these crazy toys. And the cutting-edge technology makes it exciting. Doing the teaser trailer for Comic-Con, I had my first experience of motion capture. And that's turning the industry on its head. It's amazing being part of that.
There's such a retro love for Tron. How do you bring it up to date?
Well, when we made Tron there was no internet, no cellphones. But now we have motion capture, so I think we'll get a far more successful version of the story, which is someone literally getting sucked into a video game. When we did King Kong in the 70s, one minute you'd have a shot of Rick Baker in this big suit and then you'd cut to this 80ft stiff model, and they looked nothing alike. Compare to that Peter Jackson's King Kong the technology is there and they did a wonderful job. I thought they created a beautiful Kong. So I hope that'll be the same for Tron.
Walt Disney Pictures is expected to release Tr2n in 2010.
Gee, I hope they find a place for Wendy Carlos to do some of the music somewhere. If anyone knows, that will make it even better, but wow! Even that video is enough to see it's worth a look see. Bravo for Bridges to be involved again.
In short, can't wait. :metallica:

Boxleitner Returns For "TR2N"
By Garth FranklinWednesday, December 24th 2008 8:13am
Original "Tron" co-star Bruce Boxleitner is tipped to be returning for Disney's upcoming sequel to the 1982 sci-fi cult classic according to Coming Soon.
In the original, hacker/arcade owner Kevin Flynn (Jeff Bridges) is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate known as the Master Control Program (MCP) and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers.
It is there, in the ultimate blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron (Boxleitner) to outmaneuver the MCP that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game.
The site says Boxleitner is currently filming a role for the project which also stars Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett.
It's been confirmed.. how cool is that..
The news drifting in from Walt Disney Pictures today is that Bruce Boxleitner is returning as Alan Bradley in their upcoming sequel to 1982's Tron entitled TR2N. The actor is reportedly at work, reprising his role alongside original cast member Jeff Bridges and new cast members Beau Garrett and Olivia Wilde.
At this time, the plot of TR2N (also known as Tron 2.0), is being kept under wraps. It is known that the film will be a direct sequel to the original, catching up with the original characters some twenty-eight years after Kevin Flynn was sucked into a video game. It is not known at this time how significant a role Boxleitner will play in the new film.
TR2N is set for release sometime in 2009.
Another film to get excited about for 2009. gonna be a great year.
Just watched the comic con footage. It looks cool. Still need to watch the first one though, lol.
Garrett Hedlund Lands Tron Lead
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
January 7, 2009
Walt Disney Pictures has picked up-and-comer Garrett Hedlund to star in Tron (previously "TR2N" and "Tron 2.0"), the studio's sequel to the 1982 cult classic being directed by Joseph Kosinski.
Hedlund's credits include Troy, Friday Night Lights, Four Brothers, Eragon and Georgia Rule.
Hedlund will play the lead, a man who finds himself pulled into the world of a computer and retracing the steps of a character from the original movie named Kevin Flynn.
Jeff Bridges is reprising the role of Flynn, while Bruce Boxleitner, who played the title character, is returning as well. Olivia Wilde and Beau Garrett have also been cast in the project, which starts shooting in the spring.
I'm sorry but having seen the first one at the theater was enough for me. I won't spend any of my hard earned dollars on a sequel to what was not that good the first time around. Of course it could be argued that there is only room for improvement! And that I would have to wholeheartedly agree with! :)

I'm sorry you feel that way Kevin... I totally loved Tron as a kid and I also saw it at a drive in, it was a double feature of Tron and Star Trek The Motion Picture.
I think the first one was cinematicly beautiful so I can't wait to see what they do with today's SFX.

I have no doubt, Kenny, that my aversion to, and loathing, of video games played a lot into my opinion about the film. I don't think the film is visually interesting and the story could have been told in 30 minutes instead of and hour and a half. In 1982 I would have been 26 years old. I can understand why it might appeal to a kid who was into video games but I had a family to raise and take care of and could not afford the luxury of going to the video arcades. Nor would I have if I could.
Kevin
Loved the first film. Pioneering in many ways and years ahead of it's time. Can't wait to see the sequel.
I'm one of those heathens who has never seen Tron. After a good dose of VH1's I Love the '80s and seeing the trailer for the sequel, I may have to sit down and watch it.
^^^
It couldn't hurt.
Loved the first Tron so I hope this sequel does some great things. Tron was revolutionary movie making.
One of the Stars (Olivia Wilde) of the new Tron 2 talks a little bit about it.
http://www.mtv.com/videos/movies/331071/olivia-wilde-talks-tron-2.jhtml (http://www.mtv.com/videos/movies/331071/olivia-wilde-talks-tron-2.jhtml)
Loved Tron, i was 9 years old when that came out. When i started playing games on a spectrum and then a amstrad 464 (colour monitor) i was used to fairly block graphics and then i saw Tron on TV & i was blown away. Nostalgia plays a big part and i have not seen it in a good 20 + years but i still reckon i'd enjoy it, hmmmm time to shop.
No doubt visually the film was stunning and as a kid, I loved it and really loved the arcade game. Now I can see how the story was lost in the F/X and I get where Kevin is coming from. I am looking forward to seeing what they do with this.
I saw Tron when it opened in NY back in the day. I wanted to see it for two reasons. First because Wendy Carlos one of my musical heroes did the first score that used Moog synthesizer orchestra mixed with the real London symphony orchestra for the first time. NO one had done it at this point! Second because it was one of the first CG movies made. I heard from Wendy's site that she was late delivering all the finished music queues because she was a perfectionist and was rewarded by having them mix her music way down in the theatrical release. Also because she was transgender and somewhat of a controversial figure on the cutting edge, she weirded out Disney. She has since been able to transfer the original score to digital and re-released it. http://www.wendycarlos.com/+tron.html (http://www.wendycarlos.com/+tron.html) It was WAY ahead of it time and still is. She has also re-released some queues that where not used by the film maker who has openly admitted he was uncomfortable working with him/her. http://www.wendycarlos.com/+rls2.html (http://www.wendycarlos.com/+rls2.html) He tried to make up for this by including the lightcycle scene with the original music and the new digital mix up louder in the current DVD but with no intro. So this musical genius still does not get the proper node. Check out these fine works if you dare! She gives a new meaning to girly geek!
Also, I recently saw the Pixar story on the STARZ channel and those guys where just getting started with Lucas when they saw this film and where floored by what they did at that time and it drove them to take their work to another level. As this film was want they wanted to do in a major motion picture! Disney also saw Pixar as a competitor and wanted to show this little Pixar company what a real studio with money could do. The technological race had begun.
I also agree then and now that Tron as a movie was kinda of light and was not would it could have been, I invite you though to rent or buy the DVD and look at the special features to see what the film maker went through to get it made. Hollywood / Disney did not make it easy for him. So even though this movie is not "that good" it is responsible for things that we take for granted today to get their fist exposure in a motion picture. Not to mention being the seed for things like I.L.M., Pixar, and the new Disney animation. It is the Edison Lightbulb of CG and electronic music in films and should be given a little slack for its historical importance. Hopefully this new Tron will be everything it could have and more! I for one can't wait to see if they push things ahead again this time as well.

TR2N Story Details Reveal A Little More About What Kosinski & Co. Are Up To!!
Merrick here...
Got these details out of Vancouver, where the TRON sequel is currently in production.
The source is trustworthy, so these details represent an accurate snapshot of the film (keeping in mind productions of this nature may be a bit fluid, and certain elements could be reworked between now and the film's 2011 release).
My Geeky heart is going pitter patter. Really can't wait to glimpse material from this film - stuff we can actually see, unlike this heinously inadequate Comic Con shakycam from last year:
BEWARE SPOILERS!!!
[spoiler]Here's User 2.0...
The title will almost certainly NOT be TRON 2 or TR2N. Possibly something with a colon - TRON: ________.
The story takes place approximately 25 years after the original.
The movie starts in 1989. Kevin Flynn (Bridges) has created some of the world's top selling games based on his Game Grid challenges in the first film, and has marketed the hell out of what he saw there (action figures, Recognizer night lights, yadda yadda yadda).
Flynn has a seven year old son named Sean.
Flynn disappears, leaving behind his son.
Alan Bradley (Boxleitner) takes over Flynn's company (ENCOM).
Jump forward in time: Sean is now twenty something.
Alan Bradley has info that leads Sean to look for Flynn.
Search takes Sean to Flynn's old arcade - mothballed.
Into the computer world goes Sean.
There's a CLU character (Flynn's computer alter-ego from the first film).
Flynn has programmed CLU to run around and make a better computer world, but CLU's gone corrupt and is creating his own interpretation of that perfect world. This is why CLU (young Bridges) is being such a punk-ass in that Comic Con footage we saw.
CLU has it out for a kind of program called ISOs & wants to eradicate them.
The ISOs believe Sean Flynn is the one who will free them from CLU's belligerence.
Somewhere in the computer world, the real Kevin Flynn is whizzing around in a classic Light Cycle. Will he help in the battle against CLU?
Light Jets have jet walls, too.
Light Cycles versus Light Jets.
Big Disc battle!
Bridges going all out for this role. Embracing it. Fans will go gaa gaa.

Erm, 3D, you are kidding me right. I'm really starting to get rassed off with the whole 3D crap. Just give me the film, i'm happy with that i dont want 3D.
Trailer looks great, and come on anything with Bridges is brilliant.
I loved Tron, too. Dumped a LOT of quarters into the arcade game, loved the light cycles! I don't mind a remake like this in 3D should be good fun. Really, there's not a ton of story to Tron, it's all about the visuals. That film was as groundbreaking as The Matrix in that regard.
Looks pretty cool. Go here to see this trailer in a variety of formats: http://www.flynnlives.com/media/video/0xendgame.aspx (http://www.flynnlives.com/media/video/0xendgame.aspx)
I know Bry, it's just that (and i don't know if it's the same else where) but here they charge you more to go and see it in 3D. One of my favourite film criticts Mark Kermode said it's all to do with stopping piracy not to make the film better and you know, i agree with him. Apart from that tron, i too spent way too much money on the arcade, alas when you only get 50p pocket money it doesn't last long ha ha.
The trailer looks great! I really don't know about this 3-D business. Can I just see the movie on a regular screen?

Oh - I am certain you will be able to. And Meds - it costs more here for 3-D too. My biggest trouble with 3-D is it's never worth wearing those stupid glasses for the whole film for a few cool moments.
That's what I don't understand about 3d. I saw UP in 3D and there was like 10 minutes where it adds to the film. If you're going to do 3D make it a film about the world paddle-ball championship, etc.
Is this the same footage they showed last year.. I mean most of it looked the same. It was still AWESOME... and I can't wait to see it.. looks like they finally named the film as well... Tron: Legacy
Check out this link.. it's TOTALLY AWESOME... and I missed it.. this is what happens at Comic Con.. so much going on you can see it all.. but I would have done anything to see this... oh well..

That's so cool, so many good memories of those games. :)
Wonder how it compares to Pinball Petes. It's still there - right MSUFan?
Here's a cool wallpaper image I found online. The first film was a ground-breaking classic. Can't wait to see what this one turns out like with the advances in computer animation in the years in between.

Tron Animated Series Coming
Source:The Hollywood Reporter
March 4, 2010
Disney Channels Worldwide is developing a "Tron" animated series to follow the December 17 release Tron Legacy.
Geared towards kids age 6-14, the plan is to precede "Tron" with another project, a 10-part "Tron" micro-series premiering in fall 2011 on Disney XD.
"'Tron' is another example of how we can take advantage of the intellectual property that the studio unit pays tens, if not hundreds, of millions to develop and market," Disney Channels Worldwide entertainment president and chief creative officer Gary Marsh said.
Here is is.. the teaser trailer for the next Tron..

They showed this trailer before "Alice in Wonderland" when we saw that over the weekend. Looks very, very cool.
We watched the original (with the kids) at the weekend. It hasn't dated well in terms of computer tech (and games) so I'm not sure the children fully understood it but they seemed to enjoy it.
I loved it again (of course) and a young David Warner still makes a very good bad guy.
The new one should be fun (will have to watch the trailer at home).
The newer trailer. OH...MY...GOD..

You said it Brayan. This movie is going to be insane. I'm looking forward to it more than Iron Man 2.

Wow, that does look good!
I must admit I am really excited to see this movie, to the point that I have not had much interest in the movies this summer. That trailer looks really great.
This is one panel I really wanted to get in.. but folks started lining up at 6am for a 11:45 panel.. I wasn't willing to do that.. that's one thing I hate about comic con.. can't really do panels unless you're willing to stand in line for hours and hope you make it in.
Tron has the best display at con
Sorry for the large photos.. i can't shrink them on my net book and I want to get them to you guys sooner then later
Nice pics kenny. I just watched the new trailer I think I had to pick my jaw up off the table. Just amazing. I love the fake bridges too he looks really good but has just enough of that uncanny valley look to him for you to know this guys is not good. I also can't believe they were able to keep from tanks from tron and actually make them look cooler.
From what I see so far I think this movie is going to be just as good if not better than the original. Super excited.

I am very psyched and optomistic about this one. Is it being filmed to be native 3D or is it an up conversion for the IMAX release?
Filmed using 3-D cameras. I might break my, no 3-D rule for this one and spend the extra bucks.
Tron Legacy director Joe Kosinski reveals he's shot the cyberspace sequel using James Cameron's very own groundbreaking 3D camera system. Only he's made it better.
"We used a brand new generation of the Pace/Cameron system developed by Vince Pace and James Cameron," says Kosinski. "I think we're the first film to use full 35mm sensor cameras in a 3D rig."

Tron Legacy "TV Spot" - The World (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NpMTf_JjPUY#)
I'm debating whether I should take a mental health day and go see the movie.
Just got back from the Midnight Showing. It is a stunning movie Visually. The story seemed good, but I think I will need to see it again. I think I might have been tired so might have missed some stuff, as some of the slower scenes I found myself drifting a bit. The Recognizers looked great, the world was a bit different then I was expecting. The movie felt a little darker as well from the first to me, not as much of the lighthearted moments like in the first, as Jeff Bridges character much more serious.
Felt weird going to the midnight show. I am 42, and the crowd was mostly 20 somethings, and I felt like a fossil in having seen the original in the theatre before most of the crowd there was even born. I saw it in 3D IMAX, and it looked good, but still find myself getting a bit distracted by the 3D, and not really liking the glasses. If It is in 2D might go see it on that for my next viewing.
I'm going to see it in 3D, not IMAX, on Monday afternoon with a freind. :)

I kind of hate IMAX. I'm really picky about where I sit in a theater. It has to be stadium seating near the center of the row, on a row where the center of the screen is near eye level.
This way you get the entire sound experience and the entire film is within your direct line of sight. There is no need to turn or move your head to follow the action. Yet, you're not too far back to diminish any of the visual effects.
IMAX is pretty, but unnecessary head movement can make you miss something.
I saw it in IMAX 3D. We sat in the Top corner. We were a bit concerned, but to be honest, it looked good. Did not have to turn my head at all, and even at the side, felt was sitting centre. But next time will not be IMAX 3D. Our IMAX theatre is stadium seating. From where I sat, I cant complain about the viewing angle, it was good
Hope I can find it in non 3-D. Despise the glasses, among other things related to 3-D.
I'm with you on the glasses. IMAX gets to be a little busy for me. Maybe I just getting old?
First off I am a HUGE Disney fan so I was looking forward to this movie....BUT.....It's a huge let down for me. The visuals are STUNNING but the plot in between the action is bad.
I'm going in with VERY low expectations in regards to story, to be honest, I just want to see how cool it looks in 3D.

That's what I figured! Let's face it, the first TRON story was terrible and the movie itself was visually amazing but boring as the day is long in between the lightcycles and battle tanks. This looked to deliver the same experience.

Totally agree.
Jeff Bridges can make anything good. I'm looking forward to this.
I haven't gone to a movie in the Theater for a long time, this one, in Imax here in the next few weeks will get my business. Looking forward to it.

LOL... I enjoyed Transformers 2 and GI Joe.. fun action movies. Never watched Showgirls as it's not my kind of movie. Only genre movie that I can think of at the moment that I actually didn't like very much was Reign of Fire.
Now to get this thread back on track.. are they even playing this movie in 2D.. I've only heard them advertise in 3D and 3D IMAX
Yes, you can see it in at least three possible ways: Standard, 3-D, or 3-D IMAX. All depending on the theater, screens available, etc. The local theater in Rockford has it in standard and 3-D showings.

Oh cool.. I'm sure being in Los Angeles I'll have many options.
Trying to see it Sunday.
Yeah, lot's of 2D screening out there. If anything, 3D is more rare.

Sure, I also read over on the RPF that the film doesn't actually become 3D until they enter the computer world, it's like a big reveal.
I did see last spring's "Alice in Wonderland" in 3-D. And when I saw that I noticed the brightness of the movie was definitely lowered when I put the glasses on. I think it has something to do with the polarization in the lenses.

It 100% becomes a little less bright because you're basically wearing sun glasses, but even the old colored lens of yesteryear created a dimming effect.
Any time you put something tinted between your eyes and a light source, there's a reduction. However, I think that most filmmakers take that into consideration and the brightness with glasses is at the proper contrast level for the film.
From the near dozen of 3d films I've seen so far, it's never been an issue and I have never compared the dimmed levels to the light levels of a non-3d showing. If the snow keeps falling, I'm going see this tomorrow.
For 3d your eyes are supposed to fully adjust in 20 minutes. Taking them off and on is not intended.

That's a good point that I forgot to bring up. Your eyes dilate with the extra shadows and if you keep them on from the beginning of the trailers, everything should be cool by movie start.
lol just swing by the eye doctor and get them to put those drops in your eyes!
So if its in 3D the first twenty mins you dont see anything. Jeez I wish this 3D crap would go away. Please, really go away and just give me a good film.

Nope, that's not true at all. You see everything fine. After 20 or so minutes, things just seem brighter. However, you don't notice any of this if you make it to the movie on time.
I think that while you are protesting against 3D, you should give it a try before you judge it.
I'm pretty sure that people were just as grumpy when filmmakers had the audacity to try and put movies in color or add voices and get past the whole mono track.
That experiment seemed to work out well for us movie watchers. You should try it once, the way the director intended in a film made for 3D before you pass judgement.
if i'm honest the reasons why are obvious, I was not bothered by Avatar ( a true 3D film), and as for the rendered versions of other films ive seen the standard version which were perfectly enjoyable. As iwear glasses which i find a pain inteh arse anyway why the hell would iwant to put something else on my face. I will see a 3D film once i feel one is done as compliment for the film and not just as the film.
I love 3D when the movie is made in 3D.. Avatar was awesome.. the 3D added an entire other level to the movie.. I'll see Tron in 3D because it was made that way. 3D is suppose to enhance the experience not hinder it.
3d is a gimmic at this point. In the next two years or so you are going to see the no-glasses 3d hit maintstream anyways.
Well i tell you what, i'm looking forward to your review on your 3D TV. I noticed something the otherd ay, on TV a advert for a 3D nature programme, and it did look like it stood out a bit, now if thats the future that i can deal.
I can understand the hesitation on 3D on some level, but on others, it's kind of myopic. I agree that for some films, 3D seems more a gimmick, but for others, it's the vision of the director to add the 3D. I personally don't like watching a movie filmed in 3d in a 2d format, but I can understand why some people do it.
It's easy to label something as a gimmick. They did that with THX and DTS, but it didn't take away from the experience that these formats added to the product.
As for glasses. I too am a member of the glasses club. I also have contacts. There was only one film that I wore my glasses to see in 3D and I didn't find any issues with that.
Maybe it's because I did alot of chem stuff in high school and welding. The 3D glasses were no more or less uncomfortable than a pair of safety goggles over my regular wear. I put them on in the trailers and didn't notice them by the time things were starting in the movie.
I know that all experience vary, but I think that this is one of those cases of human nature. When we like something, we don't notice the little discomforts, but in the same breath, when we go in not liking something, even the slightest issues become a major failing.
Having only seen a select group of 3D movies, I'm not an expert on 3d. I can stay without a doubt that I have never been convinced to see a movie because it was in 3D. If I wasn't attracted to the story, then 3D wasn't going to sale me on it. If I was attracted to the story and it was shot in 3D, then it made me want to see it in the format at the movies instead of waiting for the DVD.
As far as I'm concerned, filmmakers have been working slowly towards an movie experience that pulls you into the film from the beginning of film. Each step has been towards an experience that sucked you in. From the advance in color to the advanced in sound. 3D is just another of those advances and succeeds on so many levels where the old 3D failed.
You get what you paid for. Not just things leaping out at you, but actual depth in the film without the old glasses distorting the colors or creating eye fatigue. Job done. It does what it says on the tin.

There are 3D display tvs here in stores with the glasses. I saw a segment of some sort of carnival and I was beyond amazed. I crave one of those tvs like Bryan backs Apple.
Cost aside, I hope to have a nice pretty one being the centerpiece of my entertainment system as soon as there is 3D broadcast support. I want something other than just movies, but from what I've read, sports games have already been done in 3D and once there are more events .. I will be getting that system. It's like looking out of a window to the world outside.
I see A LOT of movies in the theater. My eyes are used to a certainly level of brightness when seeing a film in a theater. The whole time I watched the "Alice 3-D" movie it seemed dimmer to me. I'm not talking about taking the glasses on and off. The picture was less bright - period. I'm not a cat, but I do have pretty good eyes. Again, all I say is "I don't need no stinking 3-D" to enjoy a good movie. Simply as that.

I get what you're saying, but was that the 3D or just Tim Burton? His films are always darker than other films. I think that at some point someone will need to direct compare 3D brightness with the brightness level of the same film in non-3D
Ok, I'm back from TRON 3D! Now, you all know I am with X and Kenny, I enjoy natively filmed 3D. I adored Avatar. It is true that the first 20 min of TRON has no 3D effects but you still wear the glasses and it looks perfectly fine. To Rico's point, yes, it is a bit dimmed due to the glasses but nothing very noticeable. Once they enter the grid, the 3D comes in to full effect. Let me just say right off the bat, this is a visually STUNNING movie. The 3D provided a nice compliment BUT this films visuals would be as good in 2D. The 3D is very....mellow, for the most part. The visual environment of the computer world is very dark with lots of beautiful light. It doesn't lend itself as much to the beauty of the 3D like Avatar where it was a real world natural environment. Avatar's 3D submersed me into the world, Tron's was more of a quiet compliment.
When TRON is doing action, this movie is terrific and exciting. When this movie is doing exposition, it drags terrible and it requires a lot of talking to get the story and backstory across. I had a lot of fun but the movie has some serious pacing issues and is about 10min too long. It awesome light cycles or disc war followed by long exposition followed by exciting fight followed by long exposition, ect. Having said that, this movie has two of the most stunningly beautiful women in it to stare at which really helps.
Bottom line, TRON Legacy suffers from what TRON suffered from. Amazing visuals and a slow story. The story wasn't bad, per se, but it was involved and the film has trouble getting around that. But I enjoyed it and recommend seeing , in either 2D or 3D as that doesn't matter as much with this one. One benefit of seeing the 3D is all the previews are the upcoming 3D releases. One thing is glaringly clear, Disney fins do excellent 3D. Cars 2, Pirates 3, Mars Needs Moms look great in 3D. Marvel and DC' Thor, Green Lantern, and Green Hornet don't look as good in 3D.

You sold me on seeing it ASAP. I was expecting great visuals and a slow story, I don't have rose tinted glasses on about the first one, but I still love it. If they exceeded that with this one and pushed the visuals up a level, then I'm stoked.
The best part is that this is the first Tron with CG. I want to see how they do that now that they can.

One of the most impressive effects is the 28 years they manage to remove from Jeff Bridges face! It looks amazing, seemless.

Yeah I'm going next week during break.. want to see Narnia 3 as well
I can't believe I saw this before all of you! Go me!
Even before me Bryan...but then...I've been sick. :)
I waited to see it until today to be home to see it with my son. Just got back. I enjoyed it a lot. Lots of fun stuff. I thought the story was fine. The effects were cool. Oh, we went to a 3-D showing because it was the next time available. Again - the 3-D was useless, in my opinion (and my son's too). Heck, the movie previews before Tron was shown used it to better advantage. I'll say it again, there was both no need and very little use of 3-D in this film. If films keep doing this and pushing 3-D without really delivering on the experience this will end the 3-D phase we are in. I've been hearing from many people that just feel it's a gimmick and is just over-hyped. Anyway, fun movie - but I really wouldn't bother with the 3-D. At least that was our view. Probably get my son and talk on the podcast this weekend about it too.
Yeah, I don't think the environment lent itself well to taking advantage of 3D, which is odd considering it's all CG but males sense as it's all so dark. I didn't find 3D to add to the experience but I also don't think it took away either. I am ambivalent about it for this movie. I don't think it's success or failure as a 3D film is an indictment on the technology in general, though.
My point is the 3-D is again not needed and adds little to nothing to the film. I've read a few more reviews now and people are getting more and more bothered by this film and others that advertise heavily the 3-D experience and it doesn't deliver on that. This has happened for several films now. So again, unless we get another "Avatar" at some point I still feel people are going to feel ripped off by the added cost without the payoff.
What did you think of the previews for "Mars Needs Moms","Cars 2", and "Pirates 4" in 3D. I thought the first two looked cool in 3D.

I saw Tron Legacy with my son and another family yesterday. I really enjoyed the movie! We did not see the 3D version but from what I am reading here I did not miss much. I thought the movie stood on its own well without 3D effects.
THe CGI was very well rendered and the sound was excellent! I didn't find much that I feel the need to criticize. I will recommend it!
Now if I can just find a copy of the original movie to show my son....
Thought this pic was kind of funny.

Why it's the Tron guy of course!

I agree with Rico...the 3D didn't add anything to the experience. In fact, it actually took away from my experience. I don't know if it was the theater I went to, or the glasses they gave us (which were being wiped off and handed back out for the next show), but the movie looked so fuzzy to me that I could barely make out facial features. The only other 3D movie I have seen is Avatar, and I don't normally run to see 3D, but I thought Tron Legacy would be worth it. What a disappointment to see a disclaimer at the beginning stating that there were numerous 2D scenes in the movie! Unless we get another Avatar, I won't see another 3D. I would like to see Tron again in 2D...I would probably like it more if I could actually see faces!

Andrew and I went to Tron Legacy yesterday.
I thought it was overall a really solid movie for those of us that are Tron fans. The special effects were so great! The sound was excellent. The story was so so, but what I loved the most was going back to Flynn's and seeing all of that.
I felt like they did a great job on Jeff Bridges. That was really cool.
I wanted to like the lady character more, but really never connected like I think they wanted me too.
We saw it in 2D at a crappy theater, so perhaps the journey to Imax is in order? I don't know.
Overall a pretty good experience at the Theater.

Dude, she was smokin' hot, that was good enough for me. :)
The more I think about it, the more I actually want to go back and see it again. I have a freind locally who wants to see it next week and I'm going to try and hook up with him. I'll go see it in 3D again if he wants, as I said in my review I felt the 3D didn't add a lot but it didn't detract for me either. We have 2 local IMAX theater options as well, so maybe that would be cool way to see ti again.
Rick - I think you responded fine to the Quorra character. She's suppose to be kind of without emotion and so on. So, I think it's fine she leaves you a little cold. But, as Bryan said, she is hot!
Had a little fun today putting myself in the movie!
Just Blogged about this..
I saw Tron in 2D, as I was told many times that the 3D doesn't really enhance the film and isn't worth the extra money you have to pay... so 2D it was.
I saw the original Tron in a drive in double feature with Star Trek The Motion Picture back in the day. I feel asleep with Star Trek but was totally enveloped in the world of Tron and loved it... I was 12. Because I waited a few weeks to see this I have been hearing other peoples reviews of this movie.. beautiful special effects, horrible story.. blah blah blah. So my quick review.. I LOVED IT!!!!
I thought the SFX were incredible, my favor was the light cycle battle.. OMG.. the double level track was pure genius. I thought the Clu (Young Jeff Bridges) was done really well. There were a few times I could tell it was altered (CG'd) but for the most part it looked like a younger Jeff Bridges. I was excited to see Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) back and even see a younger version of him as well. I liked Corra, I liked that she was different from the users and programs.. and that she was last of her kind. I liked the ladies in white, Gem was one of them, very cool scene when Sam first goes into the Grid and they dress him.. that was pretty cool.
Now for the story, I'm not sure what everyone is complaining about.. the story made since to me, it's not complicated, it's a simple story from point A to point B. I didn't expect it to be deep.. I mean it's Tron. I enjoyed it very much.
Some people are complaining about the end but I thought it was a cool ending and even leaves it open for another sequel. I like that we see Tron dropping into the ocean and changing colors from bad (red) to good (blue) and not derezing.
The one thing I loved about the movie is that the world felt exactly the same as the first Tron movie. I mean the CG is updated and the costumes were tweaked a bit as were the vehicles but in essences it was the same Tron that I watched when I was a 12 year old kid... I can't wait to see it again.
People crapped all over AVATAR's story as well Kenny and I thought it was great. I didn't mind the story, I did have an issue with the utter lack of pacing and slowness of the exposition and flash back scenes. They really threw the brakes on the movie and dragged a bit, especially when they are on the light sail ship.
This is a pretty incredible making of video

I didnt know Michael Sheen was in it. Cool.
This is a very cool short film that's going to be on the "Tron: Legacy" DVD/Blu-Ray out in a few weeks. Gives you some hints and clues about another movie and more background on Flynn. Cool stuff!
TRON: The Next Day - Flynn Lives Revealed (TR3N Teaser 1) [480p] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GaodH483Ako#ws)
This was AWESOME... I love these kinds of DVD extras.
I'm a little late to the party with this. Watched it the other night but I was too tired so will need to rewatch some.
I liked the story, they did a great job but the Sfx were incredible. Jeff Bridges looked (almost) completely natural as his younger self. Totally amazing.
I also liked the little subtle digs at our big computer software companies! ;)
This comes out on DVD and Blu-Ray this week. To save some money on it, go here for a coupon.
http://www.troncoupon.com/bestbuy (http://www.troncoupon.com/bestbuy)
Cool, Coupon works in Canada as well. My wife is picking me up from work on Tuesday, so I will have her drive me to Bestbuy on the way home.
Just picked this deal up..
Get Tron: Legacy 2-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo & Tron: The Original Classic 2-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo for $31.98 + free shipping- http://ow.ly/4tTJG (http://ow.ly/4tTJG) just scroll down to "Best Value"
iTunes is allowing for preorders for this movie at $9.99 until 12PM tonight. Obviously if you can afford the Blue-Ray combo, that is a better deal as that gets you the Digital copy anyway, but if cheap and Apple is the way to go, there you go.

Hitting my local Best Buy tomorrow for the Blu-Ray pack or maybe the deluxe set with identity disc inside.

$59 I think with the Disney coupon. So basically about $35 for the collectible prop. I'm trying to find better pics of it over on the Prop Forum.
Target has a pretty good deal as well.. Tron: Legacy 4-disc is $25, Tron Original is $20, save $8 if buy together plus $5 off coupon at target.com/movies = $32 Cancelled my Amazon order and going to pick this one up... but very tempted by the Best Buy Disc deal..
Well.. been to two targets and a best buy and none of them had exactly what I wanted... first Target has nothing.. completely sold out of all the Blu-Ray editions of both movies. The second Target had 3 of the Original Tron 2disc Blu-Ray but only the 2 disc Tron Legacy, but Target also has the deluxe 5 Disc edition that Rico posted a picture of for $65 or something close to that. I then went to best buy and they finally had the 4 Disc Tron Legacy but was out of the Original Tron. So I didn't want to come home empty handed after traveling all over the place so I went back to the 2nd Target and got the original Tron 2 disc blu-ray and Tron Legacy 2 disc, got 8 dollars off because I bought both of them (which best buy didn't offer). So I wound up paying $31.98 which isn't bad for 2 blu-rays and 2 DVD of each movie. The 4 disc one had a 3D disc but I don't have a 3D Blu-ray player and it also came with a digital copy but again I can make my own if I really want a digital copy.
Just watched it and loved it.
Yeah, I need to pick it up tomorrow! I already got my son a cool white Identity Disc with all the lights and sounds and whatnot. Very cool! It is Flynn's disc too.
I think I want the one Kenny got.
Well...got a surprise in the mailbox yesterday! (No jokes Meds...OR Bryan!). Our pre-order was tracked and wasn't supposed to arrive until Thursday, but it came yesterday. YEAH! We got the 4 disc set (Blu Ray, DVD, Digital copy, Blu Ray 3D), won't ever need the 3D disc but oh well :) Can't wait to watch it again!
I find it somewhat funny that the "digital copy" is on a physical disc too.
Also found out that the $5 dollar coupon is only good if you buy the 4 or 5 disc version.

Yeah that was odd.. I guess it make the set sound better when you say you have 4 or 5 discs.. sounds like you're getting more. But with that said.. I actually like the idea of the digital version being on a disc because of my slow internet and having to download the file.
What type of file format is the "digital copy" in? Are there choices on the disc? Anyone checked that out yet??
Rico, the digital copy is only playable on the Grid :)
JK, there's two formats: iTunes compliant and Windows Media...
Well, swung into Best Buy after work and snagged the 4-disc set for about $21. I didn't see any of the deluxe sets anywhere with the ID disc's. Still hunting for some better pics of that. But still glad I got the 4-disc set. Really good deal since the normal price on it is $39.99.
I love 3D CG. A perfect example of how far the craft as developed is Tron vs. Tron Legacy
