Title: WoWs got its claws in me again
Post by: Jobydrone on June 04, 2008, 04:57:26 AM
I got a new laptop and felt compelled to fill up some of my empty hard drive space with WoW.  It's been very strange seeing my old characters after almost a year off.  Even though I played a Warlock up to 70 and a Hunter up to 50 after a year I can barely remember how to play, what the controls are, etc.  I feel like a fresh faced noob again, lol.

I've heard that Blizzard has made the leveling requirements much faster and easier for characters levels 1-60, so I am thinking about starting a new class character.  If anyone here is still playing WoW, and feels like rolling up a new character and playing with a fellow TrekSFer for a little while give me a shout and we can get started together.  It would be so much fun to get a regular little WoW group going with folks from here.  Like I said, I have other toons so if we get started together on the server where my characters are I can help us out with gold.

I'm still on Earthen Ring but don't seem to have a great deal of time to play lately.  I have my little 70 gnome mage named Reico.  I also am working on a Blood Elf Hunter named Lyndark.  She is about level 28.

Earthen Ring as well. Horde side. I have a 66 undead priest named Theshat (yes, you read that right) and a 26 blood elf rogue named Rasht.

Rico, is you hunter on Earthen ring as well? I know for a fact alea iacta est would love to add you to its ranks.

My hunter is on Earthen Ring - only server I have really ever played on.  I was in alea iacta est for a time, but they dumped me when I went off to get my mage to 70.  LOL!

Well a quick whisper to an officer can get you right back in! A pool of 2000 other players is great for leveling. I'm not much on instances but when a run pops up and I happen to have the time (which isn't often) it's a blast.

If you need any advice, I can give some.

I started a Troll Warrior on Earthen Ring and I am going to try to get in AIE next month when they open up registration again.  In the meantime I am levelling my Undead Mage on the PvP sever that my Warlock is on, Darrowmere.  I've gone from lvl 9 to 39 in just a couple weeks...I am loving this new levelling curve from 1-60---super fast!

Let me know when you get in! Fell free to add Theshat (66 shadow priest) and Rasht (29 rogue) to your friends list and fire off a whisper.

You know i've never played WOW and i'm very weary about even going there. Our RPG takes up a lot of my time so i dare not go there. Plus i have no idea what anyone is talking about. ;)

Heh heh.  Wow is certainly its own "beast".  Right now, I consider it a vacation away from it.  I might return but who knows.  I still have friends there.

I'm tempted but i simply do not have the time. I'm writing for three internet comedy shows now and along with our RPG and my normal work life it's just not possible. 30 hour days are needed ha ha.

All I'd say is that if you can control your playtime, WoW is fun becuase you can pop on for 10 mins or play for 6 hours. At least in my opinion. However that *really* depends on you and the way you play the game. I've been playing for about 2 years and my highest character is level 66. Level 70 is the top, some people get there in a month, I like messing around and taking my time.

If you don't make it a competition, it won't be.

^^^  Very good advice.  However, I find Wow to be far less flexible than Eve Online atm.  Mostly because I was into Arena and raiding so I guess I was just asking for a burnout of WOW.

Just a word of advice.  Unless you REALLY want to be the "best" at wow, don't try.  3.0 is comin and I'm afraid any gear you get at this point will be mute soon.  Just play how you want, and don't let ANYONE dictate what you do.  Be that your spec, class or otherwise.

Otherwise, you'll burn out like I did and hate Blizzard's guts.  ;)

I need to do something to get the gold pouring.  I still need an epic flyer for my Warlock and 5000G seems like an impossible task to me.

Just takes hard work for the most part.  And of course resisting the temptation to buy anything.

Although, I'll admit I cheated.  A warlock and mage friend and I were racing each other to get the epic flyer first.  So the lock gets with me so that we can beat the mage to it by him giving me the gold for the mount.  In return, I would help him get his epic flyer.  However, the irony is, is that he transferred off the server about two weeks later.  I got really lucky :)

Ok, I've made a character on Earthen Ring called: Isaacsr  Elemental Shaman.  Basically a carbon copy of a shaman that is lvl 5 on my "home" server.  I only like playing hybrid classes and I already have a druid and paladin.  So shaman is the missing link in the triforce.  :)

See you in wow.

Nope. I don't know about wii, but I know for a fact that Live is half the cost of wow at it's most expensive. I was into WOW, but I'm going to stick with Live. You get a diversity on online games for one low monthly fee.

Even if you decide to go to something with a fee like Final Fantasy, it's still comparable to WOW and my TV looks better than my laptop.

The argument against that is the WoW costs 15.00/month and a one time cost for the game. With Live, you pay less for the service but whenever you want to play a new game you're shelling out 40-70 dollars.

Not too diverge too much but I'm with Billy on this.  Ask my kids.  I hardly ever buy other games these days since I play WOW (or before Everquest).  Plus, for the hours of entertainment per month, WOW is the biggest bargain around.

This is why I think its cheaper.  Disregarding the system cost and etc, Wow VS a system means Wow wins because you (might) have to buy new games and those cost 20-50 a shot whereas Wow only costs 15.00 a month and you don't need new games.  That's what I meant.

I don't play WOW or Wii.. but with WOW you do need a decent computer system and that can cost alot of money as for Wii. you pay a fourth or third of what a computer will cost.

Actually system requirements are one of the main reasons WoW is s popular. You can play WoW on the best whiz bang system in existence and it looks great, but I have friends who play on 4 year old laptops. The range of systems that will run WoW is actually pretty astounding.

Recall, this game was game of the year in 2004. It's in no way a new game.

Very true.  But if you already have a computer, this usually isn't a problem.  However, if I had to choose between a computer and a Wii strictly for gaming, I would go Wii because there are a lot of games on it that I would love to play.

Unless you have no PC at all, this isn't really an issue - even plays on Macs.  Actually I gave my son a pretty old PC that is about 5 years old.  Plays WOW just fine.

I can see your point a bit Kenny, but this would only be the case if you had no computer, no internet access already.  It's like adding the cost of a car into a vacation trip across country.  Yeah - if you don't already have a car.  Typically, most people interested at all in playing these types of games already have the needed equipment.

Hey there, I need some help transferring a bit of gold from my Alliance toon to my Horde character on ER.  If someone with an Alliance character could get back to me so we can set up a time to meet in Booty Bay at the neutral faction auction house I would be most most appreciative.

Thanks!

Ok, to be a member of the guild you will be required to be eating a turkey club, cole slaw (but don't eat it) and of course - a cherry coke.  A torso light-bright with ATM accesory is optional. :D

I've canceled my account permanently this time.  I MIGHT come back for WOTLK, but its highly unlikely.  I've gotten a lot of harassment in the game for being retribution speced paladin.  I'm sick and tired of the elitists so I left the game.

Good luck to you guys though.

No, the main reason I quit is that I couldn't find a guild anymore, couldn't raid/instance, and PVP bored me.  I had no friends, no fun, nothing.  Why should I play if all I do is solo crap all the time?  That's not the point of a MMORPG.

Well, in the end a game should be fun. If it's not, you're wasting your time and money. Since I've been busy the past few weeks I haven't logged in more then twice. It was a nice break that I think I needed. Now when I get the chance this weekend I'm excited to play.

I once took a break of about three months and went back to play City of Heroes. That break was also needed. That was a big break. When I came back I re-rolled and left my old toons to retire. For me it was like a new game.

Sometimes you need to step back for awhile.

I have played MMO's a very long time.  And I actually play them solo quite a bit.  I tried some guild stuff in Everquest and it ALWAYS just turns a fun little game into a job and big time sink.  In Warcraft, I find you can have a lot of fun on your own or with just a small group of friends who play.  I mean even last night, I was doing a couple quests with my Warlock and I met someone in the same area and we teamed up for awhile.  Simple, easy, no strings attached.  Many people allow these games to control them and that is just asking for trouble.  Better to just stop and do something else if you find that happening - at least in my opinion.
Title: Re: WoWs got its claws in me again
Post by: billybob476 on August 14, 2008, 04:47:30 AM
I hate to plug my guild (especially since a lot of you listen to the Instance and hear about it a lot) but I have to say i love it. I solo a lot as well since I don't usually have a long stretch of time to run instances. However there is always a good group of people having at it in guild chat, always someone around to help if it's needed and if I do find myself with enough time to run a dungeon, getting a group together usually takes about five minutes.

Hopefully in the next little while I'll be able to log in with my alliance toons on Earthen Ring and find some of you guys.

But again, if the game is no longer fun then it is no longer worth your time and money.
Title: Re: WoWs got its claws in me again
Post by: KingIsaacLinksr on August 14, 2008, 10:31:07 AM
In the end, I play MMOs to have fun with other people.  If I want to play pure solo all the time, I'll play Warcraft 3 or Starcraft or some other game.  Or grab my Nintendo GC.  The multi-player experience is why I play.  Otherwise, its just a waste of time for me.  And a lot of $$ wasted.

In most ways, I blame Blizzard for how this game is now created.  Its made so that most people can just solo all the time or forces you to raid all the time.  There is no middle ground anymore.  I remember how it used to be in Pre-BC.  I never raided back then, but I had lots of fun in my guild doing things that weren't focused on getting "PHAT LOOT" or epics.  Nowadays, people just want gear, gear, and more gear.  If they aren't doing anything that isn't getting gear, they won't do it.  That underlines my entire frustration.  I don't want a job, I just want to do fun things.  Now, its almost a sin to not have a full set of T6 epics.  That makes the game no longer fun.

Case in point: PVP.  Used to be I could join any BG in full greens maybe some blues and still be able to kick 20 people's butts.  Now, you have to be fully geared out (and that's a lot of grinding) in order to kill 5 ppl in a game.  That is wrong.  It is not how PVP is supposed to be.

Well the simple answer is to stop playing WoW for awhile. Maybe take a few months off of MMO's completely. Then come back (to an MMO, doesn't need to be WoW) if you want to and see how you feel.

I've been playing a some Halo 3 on XBox live and it was a nice change.

Uhhh......no it doesn't.  I don't want to get your hopes down, but actually, leveling as Prot becomes worse in outlands, as Holy, You will be outhealed by every other class at lvl 70.  Up till then, your still very decent.  At 70, I wanted to /facedesk every time I instanced as holy.  It just plain sucks....  Retribution is loved ONLY by the guy who plays as Ret.  For some reason on my server, there was a huge hatred of Ret-speced paladins.  Probably jealousy.

BTW, congrats MSU fan.  :)

I got on for a few mins last night and a few mins at lunch today. I'm still in the process of getting my mods up and running. Things I did look at:

1. achievements screen: fun, I got a bunch of retroactive achievements for getting to level 70, exploring areas, having some special items (Yellow brewfest stein etc)

2. calendar: cool and handy, they pre-fill it with seasonal events, pvp weekends etc

I haven't had a chance to respec yet (plus I'm still trying to figure out what to do!) and I haven't played with the new pet interface yet. Overall the changes don't seem negative. I probably won't get a ton of time to really play until at least Friday.
Title: Re: WoWs got its claws in me again
Post by: billybob476 on October 16, 2008, 05:43:12 AM
Ok, I had about an hour last night. In that time I:

1. respecced all the way down the cool new shadow tree

2. logged in and out about 100 times trying to get my mods running (I'm a bit of a mod whore). Finally got them up and running. The only thing that's bugging me is my cartographer 'crazy arrow' isn't working with QuestHelper properly.

If I have time tonight I'll run some isle dailies and see how my spec works. I'm really liking the achievements. they are completely meaningless but they are damn fun!

At the moment no, they are just for fun. However you do get 'achievement points' so we can only speculate that at some point you may be able to do something with them.

They had the same thing in City of Heroes called badges. Basically it was just another thing to do, some people would chase badges. You'd get them for completing certain quest lines, finding certain locations, getting certain level goals, etc.

Just some more fun.

I have been on every day since the patch.  There are problems, and Blizz has it's hands full hotfixing problems.  The most serious ones have been really bad latency, server crashes, and FPS drops.  Hopefully some of these will be fixed with the downtime today.

I LOVE the new inscription profession.  My main, the 70 Mage on the PvP server Rivendare, is now at 352 Inscription and has access to all the Major Glyphs and about 6 or 7 Minor Glyphs.  I've made almost 3500 gold from the profession so far, but things are slowing down now so I am going to hold back on selling stuff until the expansion.

Kenny:  I have a new toon in the Knights of Good so if you do decide to play let me know and we can group/level together.

There are some things you can get from the new achievements.  One of these are titles.  If you notice a bunch of people running around with the surname "Jenkins" that's from the "LEEEEEROY Jenkins" achievement, which involves going into Molten Core or something and killing a bunch of rooks.  I am going for the title "the Hallowed" which you receive from completing a large number of the Hallow's End world event achievements.  There's also an achievement that will net you a rare Netherdrake flying mount, that one entails purchacing or owning 50 different mounts.

Also hunters can tame rare pets now. I took part in a Molten Core run to get some of our 70 beat master hunters their very own core hounds.

I have two major glyphs associated to my preist right now thanks to a generous guildie. Now on to the minors.

Naw, I play 2-3 hours on the weekend mornings (usually when you're podcasting!) and maybe an hour or so one or two weeknights if i've got time. What helps me is AIE. There's always folks who are willing to give away stuff for free or cheap and who are willing to run stuff.

You should get one of your horde alts back in once you're done leveling your warlock Rico. You'd be up there with Old Man Franks and MeneGene in web celeb power!

LOL - you don't get booted from AIE for that little play time?  I joined them awhile back with a Horde Blood Elf alt and they kicked me out when I wasn't online enough for them.

They actually upped it to 3 months of inactivity. Also if you do get booted you just need to whisper an officer and they re-instate you no questions asked.

The inactivity kick thing is just a mechanism to keep the guild size somewhat under control. The armory is currently reporting 3439 guild members so management for the officer corps is sometimes a nightmare.

I have a lvl 12 Troll warrior named Uglyfoot in AIE but I never play him, what with my main raiding toon on the PVP server, my lvl 38 Priest on the OTHER PvP server, and my new Mage in the Knights of Good over on the PvE server, poor old Uglyfoot just doesnt get the attention he deserves.  I pop on the toon every once in a while to keep him active in the roles of AIE, but I wouldn't be surprised if he gets booted soon.

I'll stop plugging the guild but honestly it's really the main reason I still play WoW. When I try and roll a toon on another server I REALLY miss the green wall of gchat.

I have a dwarf pally on ER Alliance side, but I keep burning out on playing him because of the isolation!

That's why I quit.  I had no guild because the one I started disbanded and the two I joined later hated me because I speced Retribution.  I just quit altogether because I would get on and if I ever got a guild invite, it was because they wanted me holy.  I could never find a guild that wanted me just because I played.

Actually that green wall of gchat is one of the reasons I don't play my AIE toon that much.  It's overwhelming, and a little bit annoying to see all the chat going on all the time.  Part of me want to sit and watch the conversations going on, then I get annoyed when I miss something and scrolling up to see what I missed is a pain, and dying because you drown while you are reading gchat is just too frustrating lol.

Wow. I logged into my lvl 15 dwarf pally last night for a few mins ( busy night!) and they sure changed things up! I hadn't read about pally changes. Two judement types instead of one and I had a helluva time finding my seals. Looks like they dropped Seal of the Cursader and changed part of it;s effect to a talent...interesting.

Yep, crusader is gone.  Talent is now in Ret tree for now.  Should be better, but I hear that ret paladins are going to get the nerf bat in WOTLK...go figure.

Well no worries about that I'm only level 17! Just nice to have a small group of allies on the Alliance side.

Actually I was pretty shocked. Being that I spend the majority of my time on the Horde side of the fence I'm amazed at how many people there are in Stormwind! Maybe it's just the layout but it seems like there's a lot more people out in front of the bank/auction house then in Orgrimmar.

You should try Ironforge sometime.  But most of the major cities are packed these days.  Alliance is probably like 2:1 on the server, I'd say.

Yeah I started off in Ironforge, I just haven't been to Darnassus or The Exodar as of yet on this toon. I ran to Stormwind because leveling in Westfall is more efficient then Loch Modan or whatever it is.

I'm currently hanging around in redridge.

Zombie plague ends today:

QuoteWe'd like to thank players for participating so zealously (and valiantly!) during the Great Zombie Plague of '08. Our intention with this event was to create something memorable and to literally change the face of Azeroth for a few days. This event is just one of many leading up to Wrath of the Lich King. As you know, the Scourge Invasion is now live as well and there is some other cool stuff coming up before all is said and done. Also, Hallow's End continues on!

While we recognize that the event could prove to be disruptive at times, we hope you made the most out of it while it lasted. Part of playing in a "living and breathing world" means that things are going to change from time to time. We meant no harm but only wanted to create a lasting impression on players as they head to Northrend to defeat the Lich King. The Lich King's goals (as you will soon learn) are to turn the Horde and Alliance not only on one another, but on their own kind as well. I think the plague truly demonstrated this firsthand.

So it looks like a cure has finally been found... for now.

Thank you for participating in our most memorable event to date... for better or for.... brrrrrrraaaaaains...

Couple of other important notes:

    * The scourge invasion will continue for a few more days.
    * The prologue event is not over! More to come!!
    * The Karazhan boss will be up for approximately another week still
    * We increased the respawn rate of the Necropoli
    * Zombie cure should kick in by around noon PST

OK, a coworker of mine bent my ear for 15 minutes today about WOW.  He's just about convinced me to go ahead and take the plunge, but I'm kind of apprehensive-- I don't want to end up like one of the characters on The Guild!

Does anyone have any advise on getting started?  How does "leveling-up" work?  Should I start off playing solo until I get a feel for the game, or try playing with folks I know and learning from them?  Is there a particular module that I should start out with?  And how much does it cost per month?

Any advise or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Well, it's really an easy game to get into.  I almost always just play solo.  The game does a very good job of leading through the basics.  The cost per month is $15.  Let me know if you want a little help to try it together sometime.  I'm on the Earthen Ring server (you can pick the server you want to make a character on).  I think I have a trial code that will let you play the game for free for ten days - just to try it out.  It can be downloaded too.

Oh - here is my warlock Jyx on her mount after she got turned into a little elf during the Christmas in game festival (Winter holidays).

Thanks!

I just googled "World Of Warcraft Servers" and there's like A TON.  This might seem like a silly question, but why so many?  Is there an official World Of Warcraft server for online play, and if so, does it differ from the other servers out there?  And once a character is created on a server, can you use that character to interact with players using other servers?
Title: Re: WoWs got its claws in me again
Post by: billybob476 on January 07, 2009, 04:08:32 PM
It;s been reported that WoW has over 11 million active users. A single game server couldn't handle the load of trying to serve that many players at once, so they spread out the accounts amongst many servers.

You interact with the people who are also logged into your particular server. There is one situation where you can interact with players from other servers but generally you do not.

I've never seen a specific number but I believe each server generally support about 30,000 characters. You can have up to 10 different characters on a single server per account.

They are all offical, however there are a few different types.

Normal: Standard setup, player vs player combat is opt-in.

PvP: More 'realistic'. Player vs player combat is 'always on' so horde can always attack alliance and vice versa.

Roleplaying (RP): Same as normal except roleplaying is encourages (i.e. speaking as if you were your character instead of speaking as yourself playing your charcater)

RP-PvP: Roleplaying server with always on player vs player.

I'm also on Earthen Ring (which is RP) but I play Horde-side primarily whereas Rico plays Alliance.

To put it simply the Horder are the "bad guys" and the Alliance are the "good guys". They've been fighting for years but there is currently a tenuous peace between them.

There is A LOT of warcraft lore if you are interested in getting into it but it's not required knowledge in any way to enjoy the game.

Yeah Renata was saying the biggest problem is the amount of people trying to find the eggs and the fact that all the acheivements rely on finding them.

Personally, when I log back in, I'm gonna check out the Argent Tournament.
Title: Re: WoWs got its claws in me again

It took a time committment but I got enough eggs for all the achievements PLUS the polymorph: bunny spellbook for my mage :)  A little late I know, but my trick was to go to a MORE crowded area where many people were hunting because the eggs were on an instaspawn timer: whenever one was picked up, another in the area spawned immediately.  So I hung around a small area where I knew five or six eggs spawned, and grabbed em as quick as I could.

I'm having more problems with Children's Week, I got all the easy achievements out of the way, now I am dreading going into the Battlegrounds. I hate PvP, suck at it, and have no idea what to do with the four BG achievements.  I am pissed because I am completely on track for the Violet Proto Drake.  I have every holiday achievement from Hallows Eve forward.  I have a bad feeling about these BGs though.

Thats cool Ric, I'm sure there are tons of people that say my lack of committment is...disturbing, considering I haven't been into Ulduar yet.  I've actually cancelled my subscription to WoW, it ends for me on May 18th.  I just don't have the time to dedicate with three kids, new job, and wife on the brink of madness from stress and lack of sleep.  If I manage this dumb PvP achievement for the meta I will probably reup my subscription when the next holiday rolls around (midsummer fire fest I believe) just to keep my streak going.  The big problem that has soured me on the game though has nothing to do with time or the game itself.  It's my laptop, it just doesnt run the game well enough to make it fun.  My framerate is so bad, sometimes when lots of action is on the screen I get literally 2-4 fps.  It's unplayable that way.  I will likely start playing again in earnest once I get my new computer, probably around the holidays.

Never say never buddy, the game is like crack and my poor little laptop has been the only way I can play it for the past couple years.  Most of the time when I am out in the wilderness I get around 12-17 fps which is good enough to play most of the time.  The problems really show themselves in raids and capital cities.

I can easily say never with games.  I tried to play on a kind of low end laptop when I went to Taiwan and it was too choppy to play for me.  This game has very little hold over me.  I've always played casually, just like I did for years with Everquest.  Even now with some time off and a solid PC, I play very little.

I wish I could play 'hardcore' but i just don't have the time. I rarely run dungeons cause I can't dedicate the block of time and i flatly refuse to join a run if I can't stay around till the end.

That's why I'm enjoying the argent tournament. I'm thinking once I dual spec my first spec will remain shadow for soloing and my second spec will go to Disc-PvP. I feel like my play schedule can support running battlegrounds.

Joby you are really committed to the game.  Even with a little more time these days, I still don't have enough to do all that stuff.  Heck, my mage is still only 76!

This describes my pc ^
