SPOILER ALERT!
Abrams' SF Fringe Previewed
Fox previewed Fringe to a group of TV writers on May 29, offering a look at a rough cut of the SF show's two-hour pilot and releasing new details about the series, which comes from J.J. Abrams (Lost). (Major spoilers ahead!)
Fox also released a new description of the series, with more details about the show's casting. "When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI special agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) is called in to investigate," the description read.
"After her partner, special agent John Scott (Mark Valley), is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble), our generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: He's been institutionalized for the last 20 years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son, Peter (Joshua Jackson), in to help."
SCI FI Wire viewed the entire pilot, which mixes elements of Abrams' previous series Alias and Lost with bits of The X-Files and even outright homages to the 1980 SF movie Altered States (that film's star, Blair Brown, is a Fringe cast member, playing a manipulative corporate executive).
The show, which begins very darkly and features a fair share of grisly visual effects, is also liberally dosed with Abrams' trademark quirky humor. The title refers to "fringe science"--mind control, teleportation, astral projection, reanimation--which Dunham begins to uncover in the course of her investigation.
Torv, a relative newcomer and native of Australia, is the show's center, whose character is a mix of Dana Scully, Sydney Bristow and Kate Austin and who recalls Without a Trace's Poppy Montgomery, a fellow Aussie who also plays an FBI agent.
The show's cast also includes Lance Reddick (The Wire), as head FBI agent Phillip Broyles, and Kirk Acevedo and Jasika Nicole as other FBI agents. The show's executive producers are Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (writers of Transformers and Abrams' own Mission: Impossible III and Star Trek), Bryan Burk, Jeff Pinkner and Alex Graves. Fringe, which a Fox spokesman said is a "tentpole" for the TV network, premieres Aug. 26 at 8 p.m. ET/PT and will air on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. --Patrick Lee, News Editor
Don't forget this series starts tonight...
'Fringe' Starts Slow, But Is Worth The Wait
By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: SyFy Portal
Sep-09-2008
Call it an "X-Files" clone all you want, but if there are any shows the new Fox series "Fringe" can be compared to, "X-Files" is pretty low on the list.
The new series from "Lost" co-creator J.J. Abrams as well as his partners in crime from the most recent "Star Trek" movie Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman premieres Tuesday on Fox in a two-hour special, continuing the procedural crime dramas of shows like "Bones" on the network, except this time with more of a science-fiction twist.
A federal investigator liaison named Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) finds herself drowning in the world of "fringe science," the kind of science that includes Vulcan mind melds and making skin see-through.
Yes, it's more like science-fiction than science on the surface, but as Abrams recently told SyFy Portal and other reporters taking part in a conference call last week, they're really working to make the different ideas presented in the show plausible. And to be honest, they almost had me convinced, and I'm probably more skeptical about dramatic science than anyone.
I'm not always a fan of two-hour pilots as opening episodes tend to be more expository than anything else. And yes, the premiere of "Fringe" definitely can stay away from such exposition. At the same time, the first 30 minutes move slow, in an almost predictable and even typecast manner. Dunham is called to the scene of a mass death on an airplane, clashes with the man in charge Phillip Broyles (a bit overplayed by Lance Reddick), and finds her boyfriend John Scott (Mark Valley) in a fight for his life.
The premiere, however, finds real life when Dunham starts adding to her Scooby gang with Dr. Walter Bishop (John Noble) and his son Peter Bishop (Joshua Jackson). While the jury might still be out on Torv's casting in the lead, Noble and Jackson practically steal every scene they're in. Even with a drawn-out search for the two to bring them into the fold, it feels like this show grows its legs when they come aboard.
From there, we see some of the finest writing on television so far this season, coupled with acting that makes us forget Noble's spectacular role as Denethor in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, and the fact that Jackson was once Pacey in "Dawson's Creek." In fact, the departure from these previous roles are so great that you sometimes forget these two are actors -- an effort I think should seriously be considered for Emmys next year if it continues.
All of the predictability in the beginning then looks like it was deliberate, as a way to surprise the audience as the episode progresses. Just when we think we have our finger on the pulse of what's going on, Abrams shows us he's still the master of the twist, and upsets the vegetable cart more than once.
Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman could've played this one safe, especially with so much time being spent on other projects on the silver screen, but they take chances that definitely pay off in the end. This is a series that lives up to its hype, and while it's nothing really like "The X-Files," it sure will fill a void many of us "X-Files" fans have been missing since the glory years of that series.
"Fringe" stars Anna Torv, John Noble, Joshua Jackson and Lance Reddick. The pilot episode was written by J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. It was directed by Alex Graves.
well, we watched the show, and I think it has some major possibilities. I liked it. Now, let's hope it sticks around long enough to at least answer some questions. :)
Really liked this, it started slow, but was well worth the wait, the story was well written and fresh, It certainly got off to a good start and I hope it does not disappoint.
I agree, this show has a lot of promise, so I am hoping it sticks around. I liked the twist they had, as I never really expected it. They way the ended the pilot, I am intrigued to watch more next week.
Well it's Thurday 9/11/08 and I finally sat down with my wife to watch the premiere. All I can say is. It that a cow?
;)
I think it has some potenial. It's going to be next X-files.
Just got to see this tonight, looks very interesting. Can't wait to see more!

Just watched the encore presentation of the pilot and it was pretty good.. great twist and I look forward to future episodes.. also tonight they showed the first few scenes of episode two... looks great.. can't wait.
Saw the Pilot episode finally last night and enjoyed it. Not great yet, but an enjoyable ride and held my attention. I have a little problem with the chemistry they are tossing around - pretty weak and they need to do their homework on that a bit more. The characters were ok but I need to learn more about them. I'm not a big fan of that tall black actor who has also been on "Lost." But most of the cast I liked. Thought Anna Torv did a great job actually. I could also do without the big letters in the sky thing. Gets old fast and too distracting. But overall a good start and I'll be tuning in.
^^^
I'm glad I'm not the only one that didn't like the floating letters. Very distracting.
I actually liked the large enbedded letters the first couple of times, then they wore it out.
Did enjoy seeing John Noble from LOTR Return of the King playing another crazy again.
The young lady that does the lead is perfect for the role. Lovely but still nerdy.
A good measure was my wife Tammy's reaction to it. She has been very unhappy with the networks canceling so many shows last year before they hit their stride. She was boycotting the new shows. We had just got home from a workout at the gym and she was going to shower and I decided to watch while I awaited my turn on my DVR. When the first five minutes where playing she peered around to see what was going on as I had it cranked on my surround sound and she came in sat down and the next thing we new it was 90 minutes later. She was hooked! HA HA!
Yes we will watch again.

I think to improve it they should get rid of it faster. (Like have it up for 5 secs and then it disappears)
And yea, seeing John Noble again was quite good...makes you wonder if he is going insane himself? ;) jk

I'm really enjoying the show but after two episodes I have a problem with one decision they have made. I don't know if I like that fact that Dr. Walter is on the edge of madness. It's almost like if someone is brilliant or a genius they need to be annoying, rude, self obsessed, detached, week physically, weird, or crazy to have that quality to be likable or interesting for the viewers or writers. What I always loved about the design of the Spock character was he was brilliant and wise, strong, and could take care of himself most of the time. It almost appears to be a writing crutch. Does anyone else see this? What are your thoughts?
Also, about the large 3d, location titles. What I do like about them is they go to the trouble of having them cast shadows and refelections which when I noticed it was kinda cool.
Finally, after watching this week's episode and I don't think I'm spoiling anything when I ask this but did they give a little wink to Star Trek V? Watch it and see if you know what I mean.
Discuss ;)
Well the crazy, eccentric mad scientist type has been a staple for a long time. I kind of like that character the best here. The second episode story has been done before. They need to come up with some new stuff. But I'll keep watching.
Rico,
Yeah your right about the story being done before. I'm not sure if she's right but Tammy seems to feel several things where even covered in some Next Gen series episodes. You agree?
Also
Did you catch the reference (maybe not on purpose) to the Star Trek V movie? (hint they both end the same way-check it out on hulu.com)
Rob
Yes - I caught the reference to ST 5. Not sure it was intentional.
More "Fringe" Coming to Fox
October 2, 2008 by Sam Sloan || Category: TV
http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2008/10/02/more-fringe-coming-to-fox/
While Fox is considering the possible cancelation of "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," one of its newest SF shows is getting a call from the network for more episodes.
It would seem that "Fringe" has captured the attention of more than just the sci-fi geek crowd, which most of our readers belong to, and like the CBS sitcom "The Big Bang Theory," has gone mainstream. With the variety of demographic ratings showing improvement with each new episode Fox has decided to order up a full season's worth of episodes of the X-Files-esque series.
"Fringe," the newest skein from the genius of J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Star Trek"), got off to a mediocre start but is currently ranked as the number one program of any new network show in that all-important 18-49 demographic as well as an increase in female viewers since it debuted 3-weeks ago.
"Fringe" follows FBI agent Olivia Dunham (Anna Torv) and her bizarre team of investigators consisting of an eccentric, mentally disturbed doctor (John Noble), his prodigy, but independently rebellious son (Joshua Jackson) and a boss (Lance Reddick) with his own secrets to keep. The group's job is to track unusual, unexplained, disturbing events happening around the globe.
Mark Valley ("Boston Legal"), Kirk Acevedo, Blair Brown and Jasika Nicole co-star.
Well i've just seen the first episode (1 hour 45mins long) and I have to say i'm really liking it. The effects on the plane with the pilots jaw falling off was brilliant. It felt a bit long in parts but i look forward to episode 2. What is with those xray pics that keep popping up?
The second episode is uber creepy to me, and I had to look away at some parts. And while it's not my favorite it's still a good episode with a lot of great moments, both comedic and dramatic. I'm glad you're liking the show so far, Meds. It's definitely one of those shows I'm keeping my eye on... partly because it's J.J. Abrams producing and I don't want to get lost. :P
Oh really looking forward to episode 2 then KC, sounds good.
Ps drum beat to your 'lost' pun ;)
What I've realized about this show is that we are experiencing these investigations through the eyes of Olivia and Peter.
Agent Phillip knows more than he can say and is prepping Olivia from something.
Walter also knows more than he can say but it is more from fear and memory loss due to this imprisonment in a mental institution.
Then there's Massive Dynamic and Nina Sharp who also hold the keys to "The Pattern"
Finally, there this character called The Observer who if you go back and look at each episode has either been in the background watching or has slightly interacted with Peter and Walter. Very strange. What is he? Is he human or artificial?
As you can see, I'm hooked!
:dry
I'm about four episodes behind with that series.. I'm at the point of letting it go..
I'm loving this show a lot. About my favorite new drama this year. Every week gets more interesting and develops the characters and story more. Seems to be doing ok too in the ratings or at least better than many shows. Definite must watch series for me.
I am going to have look harder for the Observer, as I haven't really noticed past the episode he was a main character.
I am really enjoying this show a lot, I am with you Rico, this is my favorite new show of the season. Glad to see it doing well in the ratings as well, at least it is one show I watch which hasn't been cancelled or in fear of it.
I tried again to watch the show -- :ohmy -- jamming a meat thermometer in the ear to take his temperature ??!!
Ok, the guy was dead but still.... :jawdrop
Another enjoyable show be it little too graphic but they kept it from getting too heavy with a bit if humor from Walter.
Here's what I liked;
1) We have further insight into the Olivia character and her past (Birthday)Also, who is /was her father beyond being abusive?
2) Ya gotta love Walter he is a hoot! Also even though he is brillant, you must not forget he is borderline insane. (Toothbrush, soup)
3) You get some insight into the past of Nina and Peter characters. ( She took care of him as a baby?) Blair Brown steels the show whenever she is on.
4) You still get the impression that Olivia is being groomed for a future important role by her supervisor Phillip Boyes who is also a very "cool" character.
5) Once again Fringe states that it is about present day science growing out of control (a la Khan Noonien Singh genetically-advanced superhumans experiments / weapons). And how our conventional law enforcement is no longer able to prevent individuals / coporations using this science in inhuman or immoral ways which is what I feel at this point Olivia is being groomed to lead an effort in. Why she was chosen is the fascinating thing yet to be reveled but I think her outbust to Boyes in the end of the current episode give us some more insight.
Finally did anyone spot The Observer in this episode? He is always about in the background! Look for the bald guy!
Still my favorate show of the new season, though I wonder how they will keep it fresh but there is much more to this than they have reveled so far.

Little bump for this thread. The show is taking a little hiatus and will be back in April with 7 new episodes. Time for everyone to catch up over at:
http://www.hulu.com/search/fringe?sort_by=relevance&type=episode (http://www.hulu.com/search/fringe?sort_by=relevance&type=episode)
Oh, but the way I learned something today. Seems like life now imitates art. Anna Torv (Olivia) and Mark Valley (John Scott) have gotten married in real life recently. They were a couple on the series too. Well until,....
John Scott went rogue and kind of died and all that!
Started watching the show again. Cover my eyes during the gross parts - hearing the phrase "melted brain" is more then enough.
Noble does a great job with his character and I think I could wrap my hand around Torvs' waist - my gosh eat some meat will ya ? ;D
I have fiund this show to be a little hit and miss, for the most part I like it, but have found some of the episodes to be a little weak or been done in some form or another. It has a lot of potential, I just hope it gets time to work out the kinks.
I love this show too Rico! So cool & creepy!
My Wife and I have really been enjoying Fringe, I really like when there are shows that we can both watch as it is fun to watch with her. A bit bummed about the break, but at least we get 7 episodes together to finish off the season, and hopefully pattern centric episodes.
I am enjoying 'Fringe' very much.
Has Walter Bishop had a hand in EVERYTHING or what? It seems that a lot of their discoveries seem to lead back to him. Makes me wonder if something was done to his memory and he was setup to be put in the mental institution...
Can't wait to find out!

I'm going to have to agree with Rick and Dangelus on that, it does seem like Walter and his partner started this whole mess. I can't wait for the next episode....

I thought that was pretty funny myself
Really liked that Star Trek reference, I wonder if it was put in there as a bit of a Nod to the movie coming out.
Really looking forward to the season finale next week. I liked the Story line of Olivia and the Deja Vu, and glad to see that Annoying agent gone. With the testing done on Olivia and others when they were younger, I wonder if Peter was tested on as well. There is still that secret about him, so hopefully they revela some more about that next week.
Very cool Fringe last night, really happy to see it come back
Very much like then new Trek movie in how they are handling these Alternate realities.
About midway through the episode, I guessed that Peter was actually from the Alternate Timeline, but still a bit shocking to see that gravestone.
Pretty cool to see Nimoy as William Bell, looking forward to seeing more of the Character next season. Hopefully it does not get too confusing with the different realities or timelines
If you can, pause the show at the end and read the paper ... there are some shocking things there.

I didn't notice the date on the paper but from the main story, it looks she also went into the past a bit. I'll have to check it on hulu and freeze it.
Ahh - New White House. Interesting - maybe the 9/11 made it to the white house in this reality and the twin towers were saved.
There are other things.
From the text of the paper. Former president Kennedy is still alive. It also looks like it's Michelle that's the new president. The market is closed. Lastly the paper is only a Quarter. I don't think she went in the past, but there are some big changes hinted on that paper.
Should you be able to see it from that angle? I didn't think so. Who knows, maybe it's just in a different spot.
Anyway, this episode surprised me in many ways. I'm really wondering how much they are going to play with different Earths? Could get confusing for the viewer. But, loved the show and the thing about Peter - WOWOWOW!
Could just be 'easter eggs' thrown in by JJ but one example, in one episode of 'Fringe' a character has a plane ticket for an Oceanic flight...

Yep - caught that at the hearing meetings. It would be so cool if Muldur and Scully guested sometime in an episode. Season 2 is off to a great start.
Agreed. Season 2 is off to an awesome start. Looks like it is going to be a great season
I was not surprised to see what happened to Charlie, but felt a bit bad as I liked his Character and how he was always there to support Olivia. Will be interesting how things will play out this season, with Charlie not being Charlie.
In the sneak peak they showed just up to the point when Olivia went through the windshield. How did they DO that? Didn't look any cgi and camera tricks.

That was a very cool effect. I was a little disappointed by the lack of Nimoy content in the premiere episode, considering how they left us hanging after the finale, but I guess they want us to wait a bit for it.
I read we have to wait to about episode 4 for this season to learn more about Olivia's meeting with William Bell.
A very strong start to season 2.
Quality stuff!
Anybody watching Fringe this season? Thoughts? Speculations?
Yep - watching it and enjoying it a lot still. Loved the last episode about the Observers. Very interesting stuff and Walter is still a riot! I like Peter a lot more this season too. Very cool series. Just wish they would move it to another night where it wasn't getting smacked in the ratings so much.
I must say that I really enjoyed this weeks Episode of Fringe, I really like how they Handled Walter's Character, really gave him a lot of Depth about wanting to be more then he is right now, and reclaiming what he has lost. Really liking how Peter is getting much more in the action this season, and not stuck in the Lab assisting Walter. I like seeing them bump around in that old Station Wagon, just gives me a chuckle every time I see it in a scene.
That Giant worm that was being incubated in humans was sure creepy. The one swimming in the tank at Walters lab gave me the chills, really well done, looked almost real to me in its movements. I really like the aspect of Investigation peter brings to Olivia's cases, he see's things a bit differently and gets leads she might miss. They make a great investigating pair.
Last weeks episode reminded me of something from an H.P Lovecraft story. Ich! I'm glad that Walter seems to be very slowly regaining his sanity. I'm looking foreward to seeing him as the man he was before the event which put him in the sanitarium. Also very much hoping to see more of Leonard Nimoy as William Bell and finding out his actual role in recent events.
I'm also enjoying this season and the recent episode. They really are doing great stuff and I also like how they are handling Walter too and Peter this year. Really a great series and I just wish the ratings were better. They need to move it away from Thursday nights.
Woo-hoo! Season three is a go!!
Fox has renewed 'Fringe' for a third season – terrific news, considering the bombshells the show has planned for the spring.
"'Fringe' tapped into a deep creative mine this year that built momentum throughout the season and helped give us our first real foothold on TV's most competitive night," Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly said of the Thursday-night drama. "The rest of this season is mind-blowing, and we can't wait to get started on the third installment of this amazing journey."
When 'Fringe' returns April 1 with an uninterrupted run of eight new episodes, Walter (played by John Noble) will flashback to 1985 as he reveals Peter's (Joshua Jackson) otherworldly origins to Olivia (Anna Torv). Plus, viewers will meet Peter's mother (guest star Orla Brady).
"We could not be more excited to continue the wild ride," says 'Fringe' cocreator J.J. Abrams. "We are grateful to Fox, and our viewers, for allowing this fun, mind-bending adventure to go on."
'Fringe' made its case for renewal by improving Fox's performance in the Thursdays-at-9 slot by 33 percent in total viewers. With 'Bones' as its lead-in, 'Fringe' helped boost Fox's Thursday average rating in the coveted 18-to-49 demo by 52 percent.
Good news! ;D. I was getting a little worried (not alot, just a little) that Fox wasn't going to give this series the time to grow that it really deserves.
I like this show better than X-files.
That is great news, my wife will be happy, as that is her favorite show this season.
Great news! It's one of my best shows!
This is such good news. Fringe is a great show.
I liked this weeks episode.
I've long been curious about the circumstances surrounding Peter's childhood. Also young Walter is VERY different from older Walter. This showed more of John Noble's skills as a character actor. Makes me wonder about what caused Walter to break down. Still just a really fun show. :thumbsup
Yep, I remember, now that you mention it.
I think this might be the best episode of the series to date
My favorite thing about it is that Walter originally planned to cure Peter 2.0 but when the vial broke he needed to bring him back. After that, he still planned on bringing Peter back into the other universe. It really changes our view on the situation. We were lead to believe he had kidnapped him.
The Back to the Future gag was CLASSIC!

I just watched the recent episode and I absolutely loved it. I agree, I think the best episode of the series so far.
So I was watching the Two Towers last night on my new iPad, and I get to the first flashback scene in Gondor with Boromir and Faramir, and I was blown away to see Walter Bishop with crazy scraggly long hair playing their dad Denethor! It was such a jarring moment because the actor does such a fantastic job in Fringe that I have a really hard time seeing anyone but Walter when I see that actor. So weird, and I never put it together before then.

Two very different Roles, I know when I first started watching Fringe, took a few Episodes for me to get his Performance from Lord of the Rings out of my head :)

I did that too cause I rewatched Lord of the Rings a few weeks back and was so surprised to see John Noble as Denethor. I wondered how I'd completely missed that for two seasons of the show when I can name almost every other actor in the Lord of the Rings leading cast.
Holy moly, what is going on. Although really:
Why bring in the cortexifan children if they just die? Seems rather harsh to me. Also seems like their powers backfired.
"Evil" Walter is what Walter could have been had he retained his intelligence. Rather scary if you ask me.
Finally finished watching the last few episodes of this season of "Fringe." Really cool last two-parter and enjoyed most of what happened. Liked how they handled the stuff with Peter and Walter too. Now,...
It was fun to see so much of the other universe in the last episode. Leonard Nimoy seemed to be having fun too. But, I mean come on - who didn't see it coming that the "other" Olivia went back with them. How did they fall for that one? Also, didn't they need the real Olivia to help open the portal? Anyway, since she seems to be able to bounce and travel between universes I don't see them keeping her locked up for too long next season.
The season Finale was really good, and liked how they brought together the two Universes. The storylone is progressing very well, but I just wonder how things will shake out next season, and if all the Episodes will be wrapped up in it. I guess I am saying, even though I really like what is happening on the show, I wonder if one of stories will be gone or not, as it seems like everything might be focussed on what is happening between the two universes.
I also knew that it was the other Olivia that crossed over, but maybe the first few episodes will be fun until they catch on.
Couple pics from the upcoming season....
Cool, sort of gives an idea on how the season is going to start, though I guess it was pretty obvious :) . I sort of like Olivia with that darker shade of hair.

Hey I just found the 'Fringepedia'!
Has some great stuff on the parallel universe:
http://fringepedia.net/wiki/Parallel_Universe (http://fringepedia.net/wiki/Parallel_Universe)
I got caught up with Fringe, this season so far has been fantastic. I was not sure how they were going to handle the two universes, but they have done it very well. I am liking that they just focus on one of them in an Episode. Really enjoying watching how the Fringe division works in the Parallel universe, like the Episode about the fellow which was causing all the accidents, very well done and interesting to see how that team worked.
I agree Jeff, been a great season so far. I also like how they do one universe and then the other week to week. I'm having a little trouble with no one really suspecting Olivia on "our side" more. Peter seems to a little. Anyway, good stuff and fun to watch!
I'm still behind on this show, I have three more episodes to watch from last season and then the entirety of this season. From what I've been hearing from friends and here I am looking forward to getting started. It's so hard, there's so much to watch and just no time! My DVR is at 90% capacity now, and I think I need to start recording stuff in SD or just break down and delete last season of Breaking Bad since I don't think I'll ever watch it. I love that show too though...
DON'T delete "Breaking Bad!" Last season was so awesome! Can you off load from your DVR to an external drive or computer? That's what I love about TIVO. It's easy to do that.
P.S. "Fringe" is on www.hulu.com (http://www.hulu.com) too.
Hmm I'm not sure about that. I have a 1TB external that has lots of space on it, I'd love to be able to use that. Somehow I doubt that Comcast would help me if I called them, piracy concerns and all that. There's probably a way. I'll look around on the web.

One way they deal with the piracy thing is to have the file encoded so you can only play it back on your DVR, but you can dump it still to a PC or hard drive. Then when you want to watch it again you put it back on the DVR. HD is great, but it does eat up the drive space.
I'm finally up to date on this great show, and all I can say is...WOW. This is in the running for best show on television now. One thing that worries me is that this would be impossible to pick up for someone jumping in without seeing the earlier episodes, and I don't think Fox allows its shows to air On Demand. I love the stories of the alternate universe. I'm a sucker for all the little touches they throw in, some subtle and some not so subtle, to identify that this universe is more than a little different than ours. I also love how the episodes set in our world have a green opening, and the ones in the other world have a red opening. So clever.

Whoa great site! I was not aware that the funky symbols played going into the commercial breaks was in fact a secret code that spells out a clue pertaining to the episode. The most recent episode, for example, the code spelled out "escape". Pretty funky.
New "Fringe" on tonight!
Really great episode last night. Lots of cool stuff happened. Spoilers ahead...
Glad the "real" Olivia is finally back. I wasn't quite sure the alternate Olivia was going to get back to her universe. I was kind of hoping our Olivia would be able to confront her for an episode or two at least. I really liked the Broyles in the alternate universe and was sad to see what happened to him. One thing I'm still a bit confused by is, besides revenge, why does Walternate want to destroy our universe so badly? Is it really true only one universe can survive?? I guess we'll find out.
Cool new promo for the series about their move to the Friday night time slot.

It will be great to have a great show again on Friday night

Fringe - Sneak Peek #2 310: "The Firefly" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z53jZkkWSvY#ws)
I have to say, I really liked this episode last night. I think I always like it when they have the Observers on.
I thought it was really cool how they showed how Walters actions led to a series of events that caused others to suffer. It sort of blew me away how they tied it all together, with Walter bringing Peter back from the other Universe, the Observer saved them. Peter catches a firefly later on, which forces a little girl not to catch one, so she stays out late, forcing her dad to go looking for her. That lead him to hitting and killing Roscoes son. Roscoe was the keyboardist in Walters favorite band, which led him to ending the band. I just thought it was great stuff how they tied it all together. Even the visit of Roscoe and his son had impacts in both times.
Was there any significance to the lady working in the shop that was robbed. She was asthmatic, so was she really just there, just to force Walter to decide between letting Peter go or not? Since Walter stayed behind to device something to get air into her lungs.
Next weeks preview looks great as well
Maybe the move to Friday night was not a bad thing for Fringe, looks like the numbers are up

Awesome return episode last night. How cool was it to have Christopher Lloyd on acting with Walter (John Noble)! The Observers and all the time travel paradoxes and "Butterfly Effect" stuff. Just great! Very cool episode and this series just is really awesome these days. Loved all the little subtle stuff too, including the song that Walter plays at the end on the record. Liked it so much I went and got it on iTunes.
Song below by Jeremy Little. Enjoy!

This weeks episode was fantastic.
I don't know if anybody else has watched the graphic novel web exclusive on Hulu, but when I watched the episode everything I didn't get about that started to make sense and fall into place in the episode. Though I think there was one little mistake that the Observer said in the episode that Madison's Dad went looking for her in his truck. It was a little different in the graphic novel being that it made him late for work. I can excuse it though.
The episode itself though was just great though and time travel, future events. Christopher Lloyd was awesome as usual. It's gonna be really cool to see where this show goes. It's really ramping up I think, but with all the parallel universe stuff and the observers does anybody else get a Charlie Jade feel?
I may have to change my favorite current show from Chuck to Fringe. It's just such an amazing show.
Yep - the show is just about perfect right now. It's also so sad to see the Peter and Olivia thing now after how close he got to her double.
P.S. I still need to see that "Charlie Jade" tv series.
Only really big difference now between Charlie Jade and Fringe is Fringe is still on. It's really frustrating getting to the finale of Charlie Jade and knowing there's no more episodes. I'm so glad Fringe is still going and can't wait to see where it's gonna be going.
Just saw the most recent episode last night! How awesome!!! So cool to see the Observer kick some ass. I'm certain it was not a coincidence that Christopher Lloyd's son time traveled from 1985 to visit him. Did anyone notice any other Back to the Future references in this episode?
Yep Joby...pretty cool. I love Christopher Lloyd.
I am realy liking Fringe and this episode was very good. I hope that Peter and
Olivia figure out how to get passed the barrier that the alternate has placed in their relationship.
I was pleased to see Christopher Lloyd on the show. He was perfectly cast as the Dad who lost his boy. The story was very engaging.
I thought that the asthmatic woman was the girl that did not catch the firefly...
Rick - I thought that woman also was the little girl that didn't catch the firefly too.
Fringe btw got better ratings by moving to Friday nights so this may keep it out of the to-be-killed territory.

The little girl who didn't caught the firefly was named Madison and the asthmatic girl in the episode was named Victoria I think. So they aren't the same I'm pretty sure.
I just love this show!
Good episode this past week. Cool to see the Machine. Getting more and more interesting.

This was my viewpoint Joby
Walter was testing each to see what vial would help him gain back that missing tissue, so instead of going through the proper scientific testing, he just tests each one until he finds the one meant for him. So I took it as just light hearted sub plot to offset the more serious main plot. Possibly since it is not meant for him, the effects are only short term.
Cool Episode again, they are putting in some great episodes. Looking forward to how these First People will come into play.
I was a bit surprised to find out that Peter was the one who was taking out the Shapeshifters. Like Walter said, not like Peter to do, and the way he did it, looks like a guy who knows what he is doing. Will be interesting to see where they take the Peter character, just hoping he does not change to much, as I like the Peter we know.
Also sounding like Leonard Nimoy might be back as William Bell. Bell's name came up in the episode last night in terms of those First People's book, and a recent statement that Nimoy is coming out of retirement
I agree Jeff:
It seems totally out of character for Peter. My thought is that Walternate is using Peter's link to the machine to somehow control his actions. Knowing that the mirror universe Olivia's computer was compromized Walternate had to take out the shapeshifters ASAP before critical information could be revealed.
Read on...
I'm not so sure it was that out of character for Peter. He's pretty upset about what this machine represents and what they want from him. And since the shapeshifters are not really human, I could buy him just taking them out. What surprised me more is he still kept it all a secret, even at the end from Olivia. That seemed the most out of character to me.

Another possibility is that Peter never actually forgave our Walter and is secretly working for and communicating with Walternate
Regarding Peter
What Joby says, it does seem like Peter is working more for the benefit of Walternate, then for our Universes Fringe team. Since Fauxlivia laptop code was broken, the fringe team could have potentially caught a shapeshifter and interrogated for information. Peter just took the shapeshifters out. I guess if he mentioned to Olivia, it might arouse suspicion that he might be influenced by Walternate and to be watched more closely.
I do get as well, that Peter just might be very upset, and deciding to take matters into his own hands. Peter did lead a rather dark past before coming to fringe, so those might be traits he had in his previous life as a con man.
I am guessing they will keep up guessing on Peter's allegiances for the next while.
What did everyone think about "Fringe" last night? I thought it was pretty good. Kind of icky the way those guys were dying. Eeewwww!
Haven't seen it yet, gonna watch as soon as my wife has some free time. This is the only "genre" show I could get her to watch with me.
I thought the episode last week was fantastic, since the break they have been putting in some really solid episodes, and I am looking forward to going back to the alternate universe in the next episode.
I really felt for the fellow with the ability to read minds, I could really sense the agony he was going through when they took him to Boston to help with the case. I like how they are showing Walter some of the consequences of his experiments in the past and how it has effected people. Watching how Walter is handling it is very moving. Just like the Firefly episode a few weeks ago, you could really see the anguish in Walters face over what he had done. I thought it was a real nice touch, after Olivia spent the episode trying to convince that fellow to break out of his shell and talk to a girl he was dreaming of, that he gave her a note at the end about what Peter was thinking. Usually I am not really a fan of romantic angles in shows like these, but in this case, I am actually sort of interested to see how it works out. Especially after the reveal at the end that Sam from the bowling ally was the person behind the First Peoples book. His statement that things with the machine sort of hinge on Peter and which Olivia he ends up makes that relationship even more critical.
Last night's episode was really good again. And,....
I'm very happy that it looks like the real Olivia and Peter are finally moving closer together. I think they have portrayed this situation and her problems with the shadow of the alternate Olivia very well. I'm hoping now they can move forward with their relationship. :wub
Tonights episode was pretty awesome. I enjoyed going back in time with the retro intro again and seeing where the last one left off. This is definitely my favorite show currently on TV.
This weeks episode I had a few difficulties with at times. I have to say, I really like they have the different openings they have for the different universes and or times they are in. I think this retro 80's opening is my favorite, as it is so cool. I did have a tough time with Walter in his 80's mullet, I guess they really cant get around it, but just looked odd to see him that way, as he had young look, but a very old face. But I will not criticize them to much for it, because really not much you can do to get around it on TV, as they would not have the budget like they had in Tron to pull a younger Walter off.
I guess my big complaints are as follows
I found the whole Little Peter/Little Olivia storyline just hard to swallow. The events in the episode just seemed to go against what had been set in the characters to date.
For the entire episode little Peter could not accept that he was where he was supposed to be, and that Walter and his mother were his real parents. But years later, he is shocked to find he was stolen by Walter from the other universe, but as a little boy, that is exactly how he felt. I just don't see him every growing away from that feeling. Unless I missed something in earlier episodes, it really left me second guessing this episode.
Little Olivia and Little Peter met up in what I would think would be something you would remember for the rest of your life. But before they met on the Fringe division, they never had any recognition of either before, and the friendship they had in that field. Just doesn't seem like something you would forget, and that it would have come up before once they realized the connection they both had to Walter.
I can accept that some of the events from when they were younger, they would have forgotten, or their memories would have been very foggy or disjointed. As after I watched this episode, I tried to recall some events from my childhood, but really couldn't. So for me, I can use that to sort of explain why Olivia memories of her time in the cortexiphan studies are so foggy, as just over time, you will forget things. When I was younger, I was sent to a hospital for a few weeks for some studies, not to dissimilar to what Olivia would have encountered in the show, I was around the same age, but besides a few events, I have no memory of what really happened. But again, I just don't see them forgetting that night in the Tulip field.
looking forward to getting back to a more regular episode this week. Really hope that Fringe gets picked up for another season.
I kind of agree Jeff,....
I enjoyed this recent episode, showing the past but some things just seemed off. I think my biggest trouble was Olivia and Peter meeting as kids. I would think at that age they would remember it. I guess they may have been trying to say that they were destined to be together - in a way. I'm not quite sure. I did enjoy how they learned how Olivia could move between worlds and that she is actually responsible for Walternate learning about the alternate Earth. That was pretty cool. Interesting episode.
I do agree with you guys...
It does seem like they should have remembered most of the event.
But I still thought the episode was pretty awesome. A lot of fun to watch.
I'm going to take the opposing voice on this
Great episode, but I can see how they wouldn't remember each other. I don't know about anyone else, but there are probably hundreds if not dozens of people that I've met only once in my life and don't remember. From the Olivia aspect, I'm thinking there is some serious mental blocks going on because she doesn't remember a lot of her childhood or that she knew Walter at all let alone Peter. Something happened to make those memories distant and I think that if she would have remembered anyone it would have been Walter. Peter was just some kid with a common name and she didn't even know he was Walter's son.
I get these points. It is always difficult to retrofit back story into a show but I am blown away by the quality of the material. So much detail!
LOVE the alternate credits!! :)

My Thoughts
When I was around the age of Olivia and Peter in this episode, I went to the hospital for some tests, something not all that different from Olivia. So I agree, for her not to remember the people involved in the cortexiphan program not to be out of the range of possibilities. For me, I certainly don't remember anyone I was in the program with except vaguely one kid who tormented me a bit. But on the other hand, for the most part I remember my teachers from my elementary days, and Walter should have fallen into that category. I think at the end of the episode, when Peter and Olivia came back to the building they were running the tests at, she would have seen then, that Peter was Walters son. I still think that moment in the field would have been something she would have remembered, same with Peter. There is some theories that possibly both Peter and Olivia had there memories altered, since it is stated previously neither have very strong memories from that time, and Olivia is just starting to realize what happened back then. I am hoping that is the case, and there might be a followup episode which might explain that, as to leave it as it is right now, still seems like a bit of a stretch to think they had completely forgotten that part of their lives. For me, I still think Peter should have some memories, since the whole episode was about him feeling he did not belong and I don't think the explanation from his mom would have been enough. I get maybe over time he might have accepted it, but then he should not have been as shocked when it was discovered he was stolen from the other side, part of him should have expected that. I guess one could argue, that the reason that Peter became estranged from Walter, was that he never felt he fit in. Plus his whole live as a con man, was a manifestation of never feeling like he never felt he fit in where he was. But still I would like something a bit more concrete on why he does not remember that time, or even Olivia. But if it takes the story where it needs to be, then I will accept the way it was handled.
As in my spoiler quote above, agreed, they might have had to rework things to get it to fit into the story, guess it would be hard to write this series, and given the nature of TV these days, they don't have the luxury of knowing they will be around next season to tie up things.
I completely agree with you on that Jeff. Actually sums up my views on it pretty much.
I enjoyed the latest Fringe about the guys who could float. Walter is just so much fun to watch. Found this cool promo pic online for the show.
I haven't seen the latest ep yet, but just watched the one before it. It was SO GOOD. Seeing how Walternate first finds out about our universe was so well done and just genius. I watched that scene like three times. John Noble's acting was perfect and the little girl that played young Olivia was really good too. Everything about this show is such high quality, it's definitely my favorite ongoing program currently on the air. I can't believe there's even a question of it continuing, I have to believe the suits recognize how great it is and will let it continue to it's natural conclusion.
We chatted a bit about "Fringe" during the Skype talk. It is a great show with some awesome acting. I hope it continues too.
I need to start watching this but with the weight of seasons it has behind it, it's going to be a tall order. At the moment I'm hoping SyFy (UK) does a rerun or something, similar to the way they handled Eureka before the new season started.
I really liked the latest episode as well. It was cool to see those floating people.
I thought it was touching how Walter said he was the reason for the floating, as what he did, had causes the world to change to a point where it was possible for that phenomena to occur.
Anna Torv has really had to act this year, at the end with her taking on the persona of William Bell, blew me away. I am sure she must have had a lot of fun this year so far with acting.
Yeah was another great episode. This show is consistently fantastic.
And I can't wait to see the next episode with Bell in Olivia. Also all the stuff with Peter and the machine.
I don't watch this series anymore.. but I know alot of you do.. Fox just picked it up for another season!!!
That's great news! So I WILL have something to watch next year! :)
Not into Fringe Kenny?
That is great news that it was picked up for another season, that new made my day.
Last weeks episode I liked a lot, was cool to see Lincoln Lee in the main universe
I sort of hope though they get the story of William Bell in Olivia's body resolved, as an episode or two is ok, but I am not sure if I would want to see any more then that. But I did like to see the interaction between Walter and Bell working on the case.
Great news about the show being picked up for another season, it was well deserved! :)
Yes, awesome news about the renewal for the series. It's one of the best, geeky shows on right now. Especially since so many got canned or might still not be back next season.
Renewed!!! This makes me very happy. I was rather expecting it to come back as well it's doing. Now just confirmation on Chuck and I'm good.
Fringe from last week can I just say, what the heck was that? It was fine right up until the cartoony look. It just didn't look good and it was very distracting. If they would have played with it a little more I don't think I would have minded it. Or at least made it look better. I think Fringe could pull something like this off, but it was just done really poorly in this episode.

It wasn't that bad as far as animation goes. It was a little distracting, but it sold you on the fact that it wasn't exactly the normal universe. Also, animation, good animation is expensive and time consuming. Its a pity they didn't go to Lucas though, their animation is rather top notch.

Yeah, but I hate those things that combine real and animation together. The whole universe in her head should have been that way or not at all and it was never really explained. Also Olivia's face at the end of the episode just looked so terrible.

I'll agree that Live Action and Animation rarely mix well together. I've only seen a handful of video games pull it off successfully and a couple movies at best. Wall-E coming to mind. The mind is however almost impossible to explain. (See: Inception). ;)
The out-of-show reasons are obvious. To do all that they did in animation in Live Action would not only have been tremendously costly, it wouldn't have looked nearly as good, and could have been dangerous or cut from the show all together. Not happening for a TV show. I was going to say that they also did it to cover the fact that Leonard Nimoy couldn't be in the show, yet he obviously provided the voice for himself so....that's a head scratch-er there. The whole scene with the zombies and the Zepplein never would have happened either, that would have been costly too.
King
I loved the episode!
Leave it to Nimoy's character's to cheat death --- TWICE!! :)
It must be just me, but I liked the concept and everything, but I just can't forgive the animation in this episode. I understand if it was an issue with Nimoy on the show, or a cost thing, but still I just think it could have been done a lot better.
I feel I should note as well I'm very picky when it comes to animation, art, and comics. If the art isn't good it's enough to put me off completely (I reckon that is a lot of what is happening here).
I think the animation look and style were done on purpose. Keep in mind this was Olivia's mind they were entering. Her version of herself, etc. Again, I thought the episode was very cool and interesting.
I agree Rico, I thought this was a very well done and unique episode. Love it!
The best part of the episode:
Broyles!
:roflmao
I KNOW! Broyles was too funny.
My gut tells me that Nimoy just doesn't want to appear on screen anymore, hence the animated sequence. Nothing to back this up, just a guess on my part. I loved the episode too, one of my favorites of the season.
Well the animation just bugged me. And I wish the whole dream would have been animation at least. I don't get why only some of it was. I know it's just me, but I have so much trouble liking this episode. I'm sure it will be better next week, it's still a great show, but for me this one just really fell short of enjoyable.
I do admit Broyles was great in it though.
I found the mix of live action and animation really cool and it kind of reminded me of "The Wizard of Oz" when they go from black & white (actually sepia) and change to color for the land of Oz.
Yeah I just wish the whole dream would have been animated. That would have made more sense. I think it could have been done better. I'm really not against the use of animation. I think it could have worked, but it felt like an after thought to me.
What a great episode last week. They are really ratcheting up the tension gearing up for the season finale. The quiet moments with Peter and Olivia were so touching and nicely done, those are some of my favorite scenes right now. They do a great job making you care about these characters.
Right...which really concerns me! As we all know, whenever the writers of anything start making you care a LOT for a character....BOOM! They die. I sure hope that's not the case here. But Joby, I agree, excellent episode.
Well according to the text preview on my DVR for the finale someone on the team does indeed die in the last episode. It doesn't say which universe's team but I'm assuming ours.
Good episode last week,....
I do like that Olivia and Peter are finally really together now - which makes me worry. One question I have. Does Walternate think by destroying the alternate universe Earth, that will somehow repair the damage to his Earth?? Or is this just all a revenge thing or can only one universe survive because they seem to be messing each Earth up now? I'm getting a bit confused by all this.
Rico, it's probably best not to obsess too much over the details. My guess is it all has something to do with a mysterious cave and a cork in the ground somewhere near the center of the island.

But that's an awesome cork! ;)

Here's my guess and it's pure speculation:
Peter and Olivia live, but Fauxlivia dies in the process and leave the baby with Peter and her other self. This will also touch off on some conflict between the Fringe team and the observers who actually want the worlds for themselves.
X, very intriguing theory you have.
I did read on Blastr though that someone we "love" will die, do we really love Fauxlivia? I guess that could have been a red herring statement, but I do like the potential conflict that you raise with that theory. It would put a huge crimp on what the Observers have been planning it would seem. Hmm, can't wait for next Friday!
Joby, you left out the part about the Light and the fact that Walter will have to protect it now, lest Walternate get off the Island...err, never mind.
I got caught up with my Fringes, I have to say the LSD episode, I totally dug the animation, just fantastic in my opinion, probably a big risk, as you will either like it or hate, but it just blew me away. I was thinking the same way as Joby, that it might have been that Nimoy did not want to act on screen anymore. Also some of the sequences might have been two much for an 80 year old man to perform, and the Zepplin scenes might have been expensive to film. But I think it will be a standout Episode for this season, sort of like how different the episode Black Betty was from last season.
In the last two Episodes, was great to see Sam Wiess in them a lot, though I have to admit I like him as sort of a mysterious Character, so I am feeling that the whole mystery on him as been wiped away now.
I thought how they worked Peter into the machine was great. As earlier in the season, I just could not see him going into the machine, but how all this came to be was great. I was a bit disappointed on the hunt for the Key to turn the machine off, and in the end it was Olivia, but I guess we all knew in the end it was going to be that way.
My predictions on who we might see die is either Broyles or alternate Lincoln Lee, just a hunch. I don't expect Astrid, as I heard an interview with the actress on a Fringe podcast, and the way she was talking she would be back for another season.
Great episode last Friday. Only one left for this season. Thoughts,....(definite spoilers ahead)
So, now Peter is 15 years in the future after going into the machine?!?! Holy moly!?!?! So, do we think the show will stay set in the future? Or, is he really even in the future?? Or is it just something to do with the machine??? Lot's of questions. Not sure what to think, but I will say this is a great show!
Well, it was certainly something!
I can't help but feel a little let down. We were all wrong with our guesses about the finale. Olivia's murder in the future was a bit of a cheat in my opinion. While someone we love did indeed die, that death was meaningless and had no impact on the reality of the show as we know it. That's not to say I'd have preferred someone really died, I just think it was kind of a lame grab for viewers to promote it that way.
Overall I enjoyed the show, and it is pretty cool to see the two universes are going to work together to repair the damages, and hopefully figure out that someone important is missing from their lives. Im kind of disappointed that the show doesnt seem like it will have the chance to continue with the one-off, unrelated to the main storyline episodes that i thought were more interesting than the main plot. Regardless, it will be a long wait for the next, final season.
I don't think it was a cheat.
It was the key reason for him to want to risk everything to fix everything. The impact on the show is that it drove Peter to change the past. Also, we lost Peter that episode. He's ceased to exist, I think that qualifies as not making it. I think that turning Ellis Island to the Fringe Division of two worlds will be pretty cool. I just want more at this point.
Awesome episode. And I'm with Chris on this one...
The real loss was Peter, not Olivia. In changing things and saving Olivia he sacrificed himself. Now they have to work together to fix both worlds. I love how interesting things have gotten. Really super episode and John Noble deserves an Emmy (maybe two for both roles). Loved it!
Can't wait for next season!
Well, I thought this episode was amazing! I for one was not let down at all, in fact it made me think a lot about it today. Here's my thought: I don't think things are as simple as they seem to be on the surface. It does look as if Peter erased himself from existence but I offer a different look. Two actually. 1) remember when Peter and Walternate were talking in the cabin and Walternate said to Peter that he came over to this universe on a mission of mercy, that he came over here to help save his world? Well, what if when Walter sent him back into the machine the choice he made WAS the reason that Walternate was here in the future, and that the choice Peter made WAS the reason for the total destruction? 2) at the end when all of the Observers are standing out in front of the Statue of Liberty, what color is the Statue? Are we 100% certain that they weren't in the alternate universe in the future saying that whatever Peter did worked and that he changed the past so that he was never there? All in all, I LOVE this show. And for those who like a good podcast, I found one called the FringeCast (or Fringecasting, not sure) by Wayne Henderson. Pretty good show
Nice ideas and thoughts Al. So glad this series will be back next season. Going to be even more cool!
My mind exploded on this episode like no other, but REALLY good time travel ones do. ;)
Excellent show, I would have been very unhappy had this not been renewed. Can't wait to see what happens next!!

I watched the season finale with my wife last night
I agreed with Joby a bit in that the advertising led you to believe something in regards to a character dieing. I have to admit, when Walternate shot Olivia, it did not really shock me at all, since they were in the future, and I had the feeling that could be corrected. But like the others mentioned, that was the catalyst for Peter to go back to change the events that led to the point in the future. Peter erasing himself was a jaw dropper for me, and just makes the wait for next season all the longer, as I want to see how that is handled. Maybe a bit of a cheat as well, was the introduction of a new Fringe member, which was Olivia's niece Ella in the future. But I thought that was ok, as to be honest, I did not think they needed to add another cast member, as I like the regulars and regular reoccurring characters.
Maybe a bit of a surprise for me as well, was that this Episode was focused pretty much in the future, so all the reoccurring characters that had been leading up to this were not around. No Alternate Lincoln Lee, No Alternate Charlie, Very little Red Verse, no Sam Weiss, which is cool in that it means (or I hope) will be worked into next season. I am wondering as well if Sam Weiss could possibly be a key to bringing back Peter, since he had the information about the Machine, and he might still remember him, since the others do not. The Observers would know as well, but they would probably keep that information to themselves as not to disrupt the timeline like they had dome in the past.
Also, some of the stories that came out of the LSD episode I guess will be carrying over to next season, such as the man in Olivia's mind that she said would kill her (Though I guess in a sense she was already killed), but I am guessing that her killing in the future was not the one she was referring to.
I agree with Al, Fringecasting is a great podcast, I listen to it every week, and Wayne and his Co-Host Dan have some great comments. Another one I listen to as well is The Fringe Podcast, the host's also give some very good insights and really break the show down, and in my opinion worth the listen if you like Fringe.
Some interesting interviews over on the AV club, with John Noble and a couple of the producers of Fringe. Worth a read if you like this show.

What?! That's how they are going to end the season?
What happened to Peter? How could he not exist?
Amazing finale episode, but now we got to wait...
On a side note,
can I also say Emily Meade as Olivia's niece, gosh she's pretty. I've got a new crush. I hope we see more of her next season.
It occurred to me that Fringe especially after this finale has some major similarities to Charlie Jade.
Warning: Charlie Jade spoilers here too.
We have the characters who can jump between universes. And now both the universe are connected, like in the finale of Charlie Jade where the three are connected looking forward to a rough future of diplomacy. And Peter is gone and the Observes are still doing their thing and keeping track of all this stuff, just like Charlie and 01 lost in the unknown universe with the guys who had been watching them the whole show. Huh, storywise I find them very similar. Except of course Charlie Jade we never get to find out what happens next, but Fringe I'm excited to see what will happen next season.
Btw, on Hulu & Fox.com, you cannot watch Fringe for 8 days unless your a cable subscriber now. This to me just tells me that Hulu.com is going to die now. There are no shows that come on Hulu for at least 7 days and then some. There are alternative methods that work a heck of a lot faster. Congrats Hulu....I no longer care who buys the service.

And they are saying ditto. Hulu is not going to die any time soon. What you're suggesting is actually something that goes against proven results. It's the Napster iTunes effect.
When presented with the choice to pay for something or steal it, a majority of people will pay for the product and keep their conscious clean. The same people that aren't looking at TV as a must see day of event are also the same people that are willing to wait to see a show when they want to.
The bottom line is that people need to make money and even those people using "other means" are most times having to shell out big bucks for the high speed internet connection. You might not want to pay for basic cable and play by their rules, but I bet real money that most high speed connections are more expensive than basic cable... hell Comcast is actually giving away basic cable for free to a lot of low income people now.

Most high speed connections prices I have been exposed to are cheaper than cable/satellite. Granted though, I haven't run into free cable so there is that...heck though, my internet is free. (No, I am not borrowing it either) So if we want to go comparing prices, my method is cheaper. But I'll grant X that there probably are unique situations everywhere you go.
Whatever. The TV companies are adapting as poorly as ever other major content distributor to the internet. I guess from now on, I just won't get all that excited about new shows.
Maybe Hulu won't die, but it will never reach the paid levels that Netflix ever has. Not as long as the status quo is maintained. Because there really is no point to Hulu+ these days. Tried it three times and it was no different experience from Hulu regular. Though maybe I'm wrong, some people seem to get something out of it.

Oh and btw, when I said I no longer care who buys the service, I meant whoever buys Hulu the company, not Hulu+. As its been rumored that everyone from Apple, to Amazon, to Google is looking to buy it.

Interesting start of the season. It definitely has a different feel without Peter around. I found the main characters to be pretty much the same, but maybe slightly changed. Broyles was not in the episode a lot, but he reminded me more of his character from the first season, so I think it is cool that they have changed this a bit because of Peter.
Sort of surprised how fast we saw Peter. Did not think he would come up until a few episodes in. But the few flashes of Peter has now changed my whole Theory on what happened to him, and really don't have one now. So looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Not sure if the main story in the episode really grabbed me. Translucent shape shifting people should grab a persons attention, but for me felt more like monster of the week type show. At the end of the episode, did lead me to believe that they will be around in further episodes.
I liked the first episode quite a bit. I like the Lincoln Lee character too. And I also thought it was cool how the characters with just a little different now too. A few other thoughts...
I would think and expect more things will be different with Peter "never existing." I'm guessing we may see more of that as time goes on. I was a bit confused by the end of this episode when Olivia and Lincoln travel to the other side. Is that something new in the way they do it now? Stands on a grate and zap, you go to the other Earth?
To answer your question...
Yeah, they did it last season and explained at the beginning of the episode. Peter folded space and inside of the statue of Liberty, both worlds meet together so that they can work together. that room exists in both worlds at the same time and allows you to move freely between the two. This is why he could see storms and airships on one window, but clear skies on the other.
I think the timeline is now...
if Peter never grew up. Cause the Observes said "They must never know he grew up." I suppose he never was supposed to be in our universe anyway and he would have died in the other after the Observer messing it up. I don't know where the story would all come from without Walternate doing what he did to get Peter back. Hopefully we will learn more about how this new timeline went. Did Peter come across into our universe as a kid? Or did he die in both? Or did the Observer now erase him completely? I was a little unsure about what happened there. Did the observer actually erase him like he was supposed to or not, either I missed something or that was my impression he decided not to. Guess we will find out.
Here's what I picked up from the episode:
All memory of Peter existing has been removed from the minds of people. Nothing in the past has changed, but they don't remember his participation. This is how the worlds are still able to be connected. I would like to know what it means for Peter's kid. What it looks like from the conversations is that Walter did get Peter, but I think that Peter died in the water as far as they are concerned and this is why Walternate is mad at Walter now.
It looks like Peter is stuck outside of the timeline and the Observer did not use his device to seal the breach. It also looks like Fauxlivia didn't find love with Peter and thus didn't lose that hard edge that she had before.
All in all, it was a lot to digest, but a meal well worth it.

Pretty much just going to say "word" to what you said X. To me though, this episode just felt a different. The flow of the episode isn't like it used to be. It was very jarring, but I'm assuming that's what they meant to do.

Enjoyed the first episode immensely, and thanks Chris for the astute analysis, it was very helpful in putting together some of the pieces that left me a bit baffled. Even with the confusion I am still enjoying the ride.
I must say for a one off type story that was not tied to heavily into the Mythology of the series, I really liked this episode.
I found the preview at the start almost a bit misleading, as the clips gave me the impression it would be heavy on the over all arch of the show.
I really liked the idea of Olivia crossing over to help the Fringe team on the other side with a case, and the idea of using a person in one universe to help find their counterpart on the other. There was not a lot of Walter in this one, but that was fine, as I found this story to pretty compelling, as it was more of hunting someone down instead of the need for Walters expertise.
I really like the differences in the Olivia's, and seeing both on screen at the same time really shows through. So after going between them last season, cool to see them working together. Ana Torv did a great job playing both, I am sure that is not easy for an actor.
The more I think about it, maybe this does tie in a lot with the over all mythology of the show, since it showed how there is differences between the people on each side and how it affects others. The main guest of the week was interesting, in that a lot of their childhood was the same, but then the fellow on our side met a lady who cared for him after escaping his abusive father, and that changed his life and he was doing good things, whereas the red verse man, did not, which led him to search for the love and happiness he never got. So it was interesting that they delved into that, and how people on each side are the same to a certain point, but very different as well.
Sort of interesting to see as well how Peter not being around has affected things on both side. Colonel Broyles never died for helping our Olivia last season. Alternate Olivia never had the baby and still with her boyfriend Frank. Interested to see what else has changed and what has not.
Soooooooooooooo, what does everyone think of Fringe still? *its still awesome :)*

Yep, cool episode this past Friday. Things are getting even more interesting.
Friday's episode was awesome..... can't wait to see how this all unfolds.

I'm one episode behind but loving it so far. I think it's really cool how the show uses the main titles to inform the viewer about what particular universe we are focused on this week...Blue for "our" original universe, red for the other side or bad guys, and now orange for the altered timeline with no Peter. This is one of the smartest shows on TV, and it doesn't hold the viewers hand but rather expects them to pay attention and catch all the little tidbits they throw at them on their own.
So on the last episode...
So Peter is back, but did anybody else feel like it was a bit too soon? Or maybe a little underdone compared to the usual Fringe? I was left wanting something a little more after the whole situation thing. They've been building all this Peter ghost things up and then just so easily get him back. Still, I love the show and I'm excited to see where it all goes from here with Peter back.
I felt the opposite.
I thought it was getting to be too slow. We all know that he was coming back. Prolonging it would have quickly moved from annoying to insulting. For me, the mystery isn't where was Peter, but what happened to Peter and the world. You can't address those questions if you don't know that there is something wrong.
I thought the "timing" of things this season feels just about perfect - for me at least.
Well I don't mind it all so much. I'm glad to have him back and I'm sure it's gonna pick up from here with him back. I just thought his return was a little underplayed.
Wow I am blown away right now. Had to take a break, half an hour into Fringe tonight just to say how good this episode has been so far. Every element, even the guest actors has been so effective. This is the best network show currently airing, certainly the best sci fi TV in years in my opinion.
Edit to add: all I'll say now is that if John Noble isn't at LEAST nominated for an Emmy award for his performance in this last Friday's episode of Fringe then the entire Emmy awards system will be forever considered a sham and a fraud. WOW what a great job he did.

Wow I am blown away right now. Had to take a break, half an hour into Fringe tonight just to say how good this episode has been so far. Every element, even the guest actors has been so effective. This is the best network show currently airing, certainly the best sci fi TV in years in my opinion.

I think he's been passed over for a bunch of awards now. The award system is a sham and fraud when it comes to anything Sci-Fi related =\

So reading Fringepedia, I learned that in every episode of Fringe there is an Observer hidden somewhere, well, Observing. Sometimes he's a reflection in a window, other times standing just on the edge of the frame in a random shot during the episode. I have never noticed this but find it kind of fascinating! Now I'm going to be looking for them every time I watch.
Or just listen to FringeCasting podcast and they'll tell you where to find him! :)
Not as fun! Not really any time for more podcasts either, I have about 25 Smodcasts to listen to.
It was a great Episode last week. I like how they have handled Peter and the rest. A bit of a different perspective then I was expecting.
I'm enjoying it a lot this season
"Fringe" finally returns this Friday (1/13). I guess Joshua Jackson wasn't too pleased by some recent statements by a Fox chief exec. I'm wondering if this might be the show's last season. Read on....
There may be infinite parallel universes, but there's probably not one where Joshua Jackson was happy about Fox chief Kevin Reilly's statements about Fringe yesterday.
For those who missed the bombshell, the Fox chief declared "we lose a lot of money on the show. But with that rating on that night it's almost impossible for us to make money on it. We're not in the business of losing money. We need to figure out if there's a [deal with studio Warner Bros. that] will make sense or will this be it."
At the network's party on Sunday night, the actor wasn't amused by the comments.
"He could not have been more clear," Jackson said. "He's not running a charitable foundation. And if the show is really not making money [then that should be it]. But the important thing to me is that our writers are given a chance to finish the show because it's a serialized show."
Reilly was also at the party and had a chance to clarify his statements from earlier in the day. Though he remained firm on his stance that the show isn't profitable and that studio Warner Bros. needs to make concessions for the drama to continue, he suggested that Fringe could — and should — have a legitimate ending if it were cancelled. But he made it sound like that ball is more in the studio's court.
"That's a Peter Roth issue," Reilly said, referring to the WB TV studio chief. "I don't want it to go out with a whimper. We don't want to fumble the ball at the 5-yard line. If it ends up being the last show, we'll end up doing it right."

Well, maybe if you hadn't stuck the show on such a poor night, you wouldn't be losing $$ now would you Fox. You haven't exactly treated the show very well lately...
In other words: quit whining.

I can sort of see how this works for the networks. They stick a show in a prime time slot on a "good" night, a popular TV night and the show does well in the ratings. They then mve said show to a quieter night or put it up against another popular show on another network hoping that the show has gained enough of a following that the ratings stay high. I guess the idea behind it is to be a new show in the good slot to increase its exposure and ratings. In an ideal world this would work and all the shows would stay popular.
The question is, are a large slice of people just turning their sets on at the "popular" time and will watch whatever is on? Is this why when a show moves its ratings drop because only the fans move with it? Seems to indicate so.
Friday night is generally where they put shows to die, especially if they're supposed to draw the 18-35 crowd.

Not when it comes to FOX. Fox had a long history of turning Fridays into a Sci-Fi goldmine. Even on other networks, Friday has often been the Sci-fi day. I agree that when you put a non-sci-fi show in fridays, expect it to die, but there are just too many sci-fi fans that have that connection to sci-fi on fridays for it to be killed easily.
Also, putting it on a Friday lowers the expectation of ratings. You are allowed lower numbers when you air on Fridays as opposed to other days of the week. There are numbers that you can get away with on that they that would be cancellation on any other day.
They still have to get the ratings and generate enough ad revenue to stay profitable - even on Friday's. Obviously "Fringe" is not doing that.

Huh, never really thought of it that way. I imagine though that they would certainly prefer that an expensive show like Fringe could garner ratings on a night other than Friday considering that ad revenues are much lower that night.
edit: rico beat me to my point. Also as the article stated, I just hope they have the time to finish off the final season (if this is the final season) in a satisfying manner. I've long learned not to count on a network to provide a time slot for an after the fact two or hour hour movie to tie up loose ends.
I sure hope that Fringe can come back for another season, but I guess those execs comments are very foreboding. Seems like there is a lot of talk right now if it will come back for another season or not, so I guess if that decision is made sooner then later, at least it might allow for a better ending.
Wow, this episode was awesome as ever.
So apparently the watcher is getting executed for his mistakes?? And I guess we were very wrong about the shapeshifters. I'm beginning to wonder if its a third universe at work here. Wouldn't that complicate issues. I just hope it keeps going, I think we're going to see some awesome stuff soon :)
Enjoyable episode back after too long of a break. Things are getting interesting. I do hope if this ends up being the last season that they get a chance to resolve everything. There is a lot to resolve at this point too!
I missed that part about the Watcher, Tim. I guess I have to rewatch and pay closer attention.

This is an interesting thing to read about the show's ratings. Has it broken down by major city. I was happy to see Detroit has some great ratings for Fringe (near the top of the pack). Anyway, take a look.

I am just watching the latest episode of Fringe. At around the 35th minute, while Peter is talking to the Walternate I noticed somthing
Walternate has just invited his chief scientist into the room, just after he answer's Walternate's question, the one about him having anything to do with the the camera goes into a medium close up of Walernates face, as he says the words "there, do you see" his left eye flash's, in a blade runner im a replicant giveraway style...does this suggest that the Walernate is in fact a shape-shifter?
Joostin, oh yes. This has been going on for awhile now, at least since last season. Not sure what it is really, but your theory is good, I like it. You should listen to Fringecasting with Wayne and Dan, they're huge Fringe nuts and this is an anomaly that's been bantered around a bit...
Moving this into the main Fringe thread.

Fringe was awesome as usual tonight. This show has maintained the highest level of quality week after week. It's the show I most look forward to seeing every week. The end of the episode was a fantastic cliffhanger, and the previews for the next show look amazing. Can't wait!
Yes, tonight's episode was great. I really hope they give us another season, it would be cruel to end it here =\

I really liked last night episode, played well into the over all story of the series, but also just a real cool story.
I had figured out early on that it was one Universe overlapping with another, so was happy I was able to figure it out. I guess the dreams Peter and now Olivia are having are more then just wishful thinking on Peters part. Happy to see we are getting more and more of the Old Walter, missed him.
Thought this was pretty neat!

Really Digging Fringe a lot. I soooooo hope it gets picked up for another season.
This weeks Episode I thought was pretty good, the case of the week might not have been the best one, but the story arc was pretty good. Really looking forward to next week and all about the Observers.
I am wondering if Peter is really where he is supposed to be, and that Olivia and the rest are really just coming around. Whatever has happened to Olivia, either through the Cortexifan or being in the universe merged town the previous episode, she is pretty much the Olivia from last year, well except maybe a little more cheerful then normal. I guess it is interesting to know that the Nina that we have seen lately, is not the real Nina, I am guessing that she got switched out sometime around when Olivia started getting the headaches. The question for me is she a Shapeshifter or possibly a Red verse Nina.
Really enjoying Fringe too....
I've kind of thought for awhile that Peter really is home. When he was "erased", things shifted and altered. But now, Olivia is starting to remember. Next week's episode looks to reveal a lot on the Observers. Hopefully that will answer some questions.
Agreed that the story of the week was a bit silly and i found it majorly anticlimactic, but the writers have done such a great job making us care about Peter and Olivia's relationship that I found myself not worrying about it and eagerly enjoying the elements of the main story arc. I think the show is at its best when it ties the weekly storyline into the main arc, like with last weeks episode about the mysterious town, but I imagine that's hard to do on a weekly basis.
I agree that
the universe we are currently in is the original with everyone's memories altered, but I believe that by changing everyone's memories the Observers actually created a new physical universe and simultaneously destroyed the original. There's no universe for Peter to return to.
I'm really enjoying these last few episodes. I really hope it gets renewed.

I really liked this past episode of Fringe, it is going to be hard to wait until the end of January for the next one.
I liked how they addressed the idea of it being the same universe as before, but without Peter they had changed. How everyone sort of got over written, and then there is bleed through. I felt the whole conversation in the Lab with Astrid, Walter and Peter was pretty much was the writers talking to the fans about the theory. I picked up pretty fast that the Nina with Olivia was the Alt Nina, so not surprised when it turned out to be a trick to get Olivia to use her powers. Some good info as well about the Shapeshifters and how they need to kill their subjects to take the form, I think everyone pretty well knew it, but good for the writers to clarify that. I like when it is dealt in the story more then articles with the writers later explaining some of the finer details.
For me as well, what really drives how this is the same Universe, same Walter, Same Olivia, etc etc, that Olivia's powers are activated when Peter is close by. Seen that in the past, so really says to me Peter is where he needs to be. Now just a matter of convincing him that is his Olivia.
Really hoping that some of these Fringe sites get some screen caps up, as I suspect there is a lot of stuff I missed when Peter was in the Head of the Observer, as there was a lot of stuff going on out in that universe.
To all my DVR challenged friends, don't forget that Fringe returns tonight to finish out what could possibly be its last group of episodes ever. I suggest you all run around breaking into your neighbors homes and tune their cable boxes to Fringe this week to give the show the ratings boost it deserves.
TIVO never misses it. :)

Wow what an episode. Kind of cruel, though, introducing all those amazing tidbits and possible story threads with likely only a few episodes left in the series. I know nothing's been decided yet but I've got a bad feeling this is going to be the last season.

That's great news. Only 13 episodes for this final season 5 next fall, but plenty of time to wrap things up for the series. It's nice when they let shows do that. Good job for a change Fox!

Another cool episode this week. I like it when the teams work together. But one thing confused me...
At the end when the machine overloaded, why did it send those on one side of the room back to the other universe? I thought they would have to walk through that bridge area. Was the room with the machine split in half so each side was in one universe??
I got caught up on the last two Fringes, really great stuff. Really Happy they get some episodes next year to tie up the story, would have liked a full season, but 13 is better then nothing.
In the Episode in the Future, I liked that we never saw Olivia in it, as it sort of stayed with the theme that in futures she must die. Also it was a nice tie that Peter and Olivias Daughter was called Henrietta.
A little sad to see the Alter Universe go, will that be the last of it? I am guessing since Olivia can cross over that I would have to think they will return to it at some point.
Yeah, that's probably the reason.

Season finale was good.
Strange to say but cut the last 20 seconds and I would have been cool with that as a series finale. Except for the whole thing about the jaunt to the future a few episodes back, they tied up the story pretty satisfyingly and there were some pretty amazing moments all through that episode. Im not ashamed to admit I teared up a bit during the scene with Astrid in the hospital bed near the beginning of the episode. The depth of her feelings for Walter was so beautifully conveyed there. It's the little moments like those that are hidden in almost every episode lately that keeps me so hooked on this show. So glad we get to see another season, albeit a shorter one, next year. Probably one of the only things Fox network has ever done that I agree with.
Excellent Finale, had me on the edge of my seat the entire time. The last season will be bittersweet. I can't wait for it.

Really enjoyed the finale. It's funny you should say that about the last 20 seconds. The cynical me ;) would say that DID tack that on at the end once they had heard they were being renewed because as you say, the episode tied up most of the loose ends and left things pretty well.
The finale has just finished in the UK, and and enjoyable finale to a enjoyable season. They certainly seemed to tie-up most of the story lines, with just a hint of a new one for next season...can't wait for this season to be released on Blu-ray!!

I know right? They've done such a masterful job at making me fall in absolute love with all the characters over the previous seasons, it really hurts to see any of them suffer.
Off to a great start for the season. And yes, like I usually say about most shows I grow to love it's all about the characters and how much they mean to you. The actress playing the daughter is perfect and looks so much like Olivia it's amazing. I hope all those bald headed buggers get what they deserve!
I hope we haven't seen the last of September. With the time traveling abilities of the Observers I'd think he'd still be able to help our heroes in their quest.
What do you know, another amazing episode. More character driven this time, getting to know Etta a little better. Nice to see there's so much of Olivia in her. It's such a shame more people didn't catch on to how great this show is. I hope it catches on somehow after, either through DVD or Netflix, and maybe a feature film or mini series could happen, but I guess that's too much wishful thinking. Early in the last season I can't help but continue to think how much I am going to miss all these characters.
Last couple of episodes have been intense. I don't want to spoil anything but some crazy stuff has been going down. Make sure to catch up on this series if you've been watching. The series will end with a 2 hour finale on Jan. 18th. See more at the link below:

Just watched last nights episode...it's so funny how even with all the awesome sci fi tech, monsters, special effects, bizarre time travel stories, and more, my favorite moments in this series always are the sweet, tender moments between lovers or between father and son. No TV show in recent memory has so expertly made me fall in love with its characters. Walter, Peter, and Olivia will go down, for me, as iconic a trio as "Peter, Paul, and Mary", "Moe, Larry, and Curly", and yes even "Kirk, Spock, and McCoy".
In a rare move the UK will be getting the finale of Fringe...exactly the same time as the States! It will mean that we will get it at about 1:30am in the morning! I think I'll end up recording it!
I will really miss this show! :(

Just saw the most recent episode, great setup for the finale next week. Anyone have a clue what the funky glyphs mean in this photo from the most recent episode?
Lots to cover next week in the finale. I think the glyphs just are the Observers language saying the same thing below them (Manhattan 2609).
Youre right I'm sure, but I remember earlier in this thread reading that the symbols before each commercial break are a secret code, so you never know.
Preview for the finale coming this Friday! Looks incredible!

Those darn time paradoxes always making things more sad and complicated than they have to be :,(
Cool finale. Some thoughts...
I enjoyed the finale and have to say I got a little misty eyed a few times. It was great to see the alternated universe again with the other Olivia and Lincoln too. I liked how that part was handled. My only little problem with the finale was it felt a bit rushed in the last hour. I wanted to learn more about the boy and see more moments between the cast. But overall a great ending to a great series!
My thoughts:
Yeah I would have enjoyed more exploration of the boys unique powers...and some bits about the ultimate resolution didn't make sense to me, like why Walter disappeared at the moment of the Observers invasion (I guess because Walter said so???) and how if the Observers never existed then who saved Peter and Walter when they fell through the ice, and for that matter who distracted Walternate from curing Peter in the first place leading Walter to take him meaning Olivia should have never met him and...argh its confusing and they probably needed more than an extra scene or two to explain it all so they didn't bother because they realized we love this show for its characters who all wound up happy and exactly where they should be. Peter and Olivia together with their child, Walter happily checking out the 22nd century science, and maybe one day he can pull off a Doc Brown and come Back From the Future to spend more time with the kids.
Ultimately I am not worried about the how and why and will always treasure the joy this show and its characters have brought me over the past five years. I'll miss you Fringe!!!!
Joby...
Sending the boy and Walter back didn't erase the Observers - it was suppose to change their outlook and plans. Give them back the importance of both knowledge and emotion. So everything else in their past would still happen - except the invasion. At least that was my understanding of it all.

yes i get that but with no invasion then there's no Pattern, no Fringe team, no 12 Observers sent back and no September to interfere...my point though is I'm not really too worried about that stuff. It makes enough sense and time travel isn't real anyway. How awesome was Olivia pancaking Windmark at the end? She looked incredibly badass with all the lights winking out and BOOM don't mess with the Dunhamnator!!!
I thought the ending was alright, but a bit by the numbers, with the exception of a few hiccups things went pretty much to plan. I sort have the same questions Joby has on the the results in terms of how things shaked out in the end.
I found with Walter taking Michael into the future at the end a bit Anti-Climatic. Since they had sort of preparing us for the past episode or two that he would be. Then to switch it up that September would go near the end. To have September killed and Walter taking over again lost it's affect on me since I did not have enough time to have it sink in he wasn't going. They might have had to do that to show that was Walters fate regardless. Maybe if I was under the impression that September was going, and then have Walter go at the end might have been a bit more of a shock to me.
To be honest, this season felt a bit tacked on to me and besides the Observers I had a tough time really putting it into the rest of the fringe series. I guess with the way things ended last season, that they did not have much further to go with the current arc. Part of me wishes they would have handled this like the Xndi arc in Enterprise, where this happened in a previous season, things got resolved and then it was back to "normal" so to say and onto further seasons.
Joby....
I'm still not following you. Fringe was set up before the invasion of 2015 - or 2016. The 12 original Observers would still be sent - including September. Again, the only thing I saw changing is they wouldn't invade and take over the world.

the Observers were sent back to prepare for the invasion, though the 12 didn't know that was why they were there...if there was never a plan to find a good time to invade, then they wouldn't have been sent back and nothing that we saw in any of the seasons would have happened they way we remember it. Another thing I can't reconcile is where Olivia's and Peters memories of Walter disappear? Did he never exist like Peter in season 4, or does he just disappear from their lives with no explanation in 2015, or something else? And how and from where does he send the tulip? Again ultimately it doesn't matter because I am satisfied with a happy bittersweet ending.
I don't agree....
The Observers were just observing - at least at first. The Invasion and take over plan happened later and that's what Walter and the boy altered. It's easy to conclude that Walter would know September and the original 12 would still need to go back to make things go the way he knew they did - especially when they help him save Peter in the ice. Also, I got the impression nothing that happened erased any memories of Walter up to the point in time of the Invasion when time was changed. Peter & Olivia and everyone else would still recall everything Walter did up to that point. Walter was not eliminated from existence and time like Peter had been. Of course time travel always makes anything confusing but again, that's my take on things.
Yeah that's a good way to look at it, everything happens for a reason even if it doesn't happen the way Walter in the future remembers it...someone reminded me of this clip whose philosophy is helping me:
Austin Powers on Time Travel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x8w95xIdH4o#ws)
Wow, what a great series.
I found myself emotional over it. I had a bunch of the questions that have been mentioned already in this thread, but I left with an overall good feeling, warm feeling about the show. I have come to love the characters and really care about them. So it was a really touching finale. I'm glad that I went back and started watching this show again. Fringecasting with Wayne and Dan got me back into it. Amy watched more of the series than I did at first. Funny!
What was the meaning of the Tulip on the card at the end?

Rico, you're missing one very important thing.
In the current timeline, the observers didn't save Peter. He was deleted from the timeline and it was only after he returned that Olivia had memories of the previous timeline. This also applies to Walter. He didn't remember his time with raising Peter until Michael gave him memories of that timeline. It appears that when the Observers removed Peter from the timeline, they also altered their presence in time.
That being said, I don't know if it's written anywhere, but I don't believe that the observers are from Walter's timeline. I think that they are from Walternate's universe. This would explain how they can go back and change time without having to deal with the paradox. I also think that this is where Walter and Michael went in the future. Fauxlivia's tech and timeline seems to have more of a connection with the observers and I might have to go back to see what color they use when jumping to the future.
So, by altering the other timeline, it would explain how all things are possible and why Walter would vanish from the timestream.
Now the latter part is my guess, but the first part was pretty clearly spelled out, even though I forgot it last night that Peter is an anomaly and was never in the past of the remade universe.
yes!!!
THIS explains the part of the finale that bugged me the most...why Peter still exists in our timeline if the Walter and Michael successfully prevented the creation of evil Observers...I totally forgot that in the timeline we finish the show in, Peter died as a child and magically reappeared (was THAT ever explained?) later. Can't believe I forgot about that too. I'm going to rewatch the whole series, looking forward to marathoning it and picking up on stuff I missed first time through. Thanks for the reminder Chris!
4 seasons of Fringe is streaming on Netflix now.
I really need to watch this show. I keep waiting for someone to re-run season 1 so I can start from the start but there's no sign of that happening yet. I guess once it's complete someone will re-run it.
