I wonder how this episode rated in popularity with the fans?
Not much action or peril (well maybe a little), yet I think the studio took a big chance with the direction of the story. It's one of my favorites.
Thanks for the narrative and insights Rico - more good stuff!
Barclay's program (plan?) 9 -from outer space :)
This episode is generally a fan favorite. I think every geek can sort of identify with Barclay to a degree.
Here is the lyrics and a direct link to the song "life is just a holodeck"
Life is just a holodeck (to the tune of Aldo Nova's "fantasy")
Reginald, his last name Barclay
On the holodeck again
He escapes into his photons
just cause he doesn't fit in
He's got the crew
in love with him
in his fantasy land
as long as they don't catch on
cause in this world, he's the man.
So he's late
they investigate
to find themsleves in the play
he's asleep, on the dr's lap
there's not much that he can say
Stuttering in Engineering
Reg and the crew they guess hard
one of them is the constant
it's invidium
forget all that you see
it's not reality
it's just the holodeck
Can't you see what this holodeck is doing to me
Life is just a fantasy can you live this holodeck life?
(repeat)
NO!
Solo
forget all that you see
it's not reality
it's just the holodeck
Can't you see what this holodeck is doing to me- yeah!
Life is just a fantasy can you live this holodeck life?
repeat 3x
Holo, holo-oooh!

Good idea. Glad you liked it.
Loved this show Rico. Barclay is someone that i think everyone can relate to in a certain kind of way. Myself and my close friends got through our school lives being known as 'the nerd herd', ha ha but the funny thing was no one had a go at us, in fact because i knew every episode of Monty Python by heart and also had a good knowledge of films and TV (along with my mates) people liked us.
Another great song from Rick, and i'll say it again (as i do every week) we've got to have a Treks in Sci Fi CD by Rico and Rick.
Cool episode, I find that I can relate to Barclay as to a certain extent I find myself falling into his trap from time to time. Also your talk about being awkward and shy resonated with me as that is something I struggle with more then I like, so I appreciated the episode when I saw it, and your thoughts on it Rico. Another fantastic song by Rick, they just get better and better every time out. I was lucky enough to get a sneak peek of it earlier in the week, so was humming it to myself all week long.
Just a quite kid?
Right!!
Great show. Just to clarify one point, Wesley's holodeck character is based on an old English Nursery rhyme, "Little Jack Horner" that where the idea came from.
Little Jack Horner sat in the corner
Eating his Christmas pie,
He put in his thumb and pulled out a plum
And said "What a good boy am I!"
Yeah - I know little Jack Horner. What I didn't understand was the other holo recreations Barclay made seemed to be his way to deal with problems with those people in real life. I wasn't sure why he turned Wes into a pie eating boy exactly.
Probably just an inside joke among the writers. It made for a great visual!
I loved this episode. Another great review Rico!
