Title: Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog
Post by: Geekyfanboy on March 19, 2008, 08:39:57 AM
Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon told fans on the Whedonesque Web site that he is producing a Web-based superhero musical called Doctor Horrible's Sing-Along Blog.

"During the strike I started writing a musical intended as a limited internet series, three episodes of approximately 10 minutes each," Whedon wrote. "Writing with me was my brother Jed; his fiancee, Maurissa; and my other brother, Zack. To my shock and surprise, we finished it. To my greater shock and surprise, we managed (with the help of many people I'll be praising at length soon) to drag it into preproduction (yes, just as Dollhouse [an SF pilot for Fox] was given a start date two months away and all my comics were due). And today, after a grueling week of writing everything ever while trying to be a producer, I got to start shooting. A musical."

Whedon didn't say much about the project, other to allow: "It's the story of a low-rent supervillain, the hero who keeps beating him up and the cute girl from the laundromat he's too shy to talk to. And I'm having the time of my life."

The cast includes Neil Patrick Harris as Dr. Horrible, Whedon's Firefly/Serenity star Nathan Fillion as Captain Hammer and Felicia Day as Penny.

Whedon's Dr. Horrible Almost Done

Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon told SCI FI Wire that he's just about completed Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, a nearly 40-minute online musical that he wrote and directed. The Web project stars Neil Patrick Harris, Nathan Fillion (Serenity) and Felicia Day.

"It's about a low-rent supervillain [Harris as Dr. Horrible] who's trying to get into the Evil League of Evil and defeat his nemesis, Captain Hammer [Fillion] and work up the nerve to talk to the pretty girl at the laundromat [Day]," Whedon said in an interview while promoting his upcoming Fox series Dollhouse last week in New York. "It's an idea I had a while ago, that I thought would be just right for a weird little Internet venture. I wrote it with my brothers [Zack and Jed Whedon] and my brother [Jed's] fiancée [Maurissa Tancharoen] and somehow got the best actors I know to just jump in, which was very scary for all of us."

Whedon created Dr. Horrible during the recent writers' strike. "We got this amazing crew," he added. "Everybody just sort of said, 'We'll just jump on,' and in six days we shot this 36-minute, three-part oddity, which I think is the most fun I've had in about seven years."

The next step, Whedon said, will be to find a venue to air Dr. Horrible so that it can earn its money back and he can pay the crew. "We're literally just finishing it," he said. "And then we're going to show it to my people at CAA and a bunch of other people and discuss 'How do we go about this? Where is the venue for this?'" Whedon anticipates that Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog will appear first on the Internet, followed by releases on iTunes and DVD. --Ian Spelling

Exclusive: First Look at Joss Whedon's "Dr. Horrible"

Neil Patrick Harris in Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along screen grab courtesy Mutant Enemy Productions
Two of my favorite things in all of show business— musical comedy and Joss Whedon — combine in the funniest, freshest TV special of the summer, which happens to be available only on your computer starting in mid-July.

I had the great good fortune late last week to get a sneak peek at all 42 minutes of Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, Whedon's stylishly scrappy, lovably cheesy and insanely tuneful return to the form for which he showed such incredible aptitude in the classic "Once More, With Feeling" episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Dr. Horrible, written during the writers' strike and filmed in six days this spring "on favors and waivers" by a crew of longtime Whedon loyalists, will be streamed for free in what Whedon cheerfully calls an "Internet miniseries event" on the show's official website (www.drhorrible.com (http://www.drhorrible.com)) in three chapters. Part 1 will be available Tuesday, July 15, with the following segments (each roughly 14 minutes) available July 17 and 19. All three parts will stay up only through July 20, but deals are currently underway to make it available for downloading shortly thereafter.

The ultimate goal: a DVD, at which time perhaps enough profit can be made "to pay the people who were doing us favors," says Whedon. In a chat following my nearly private screening (attended only by Whedon, a few of his New York-based agents and me), Whedon confided, "We're already working on some of the DVD extras, which are going to be the finest in all the land. We're actually going to do, in addition to the commentary, what we refer to as 'commentary with an exclamation point'! A musical commentary that is a completely original musical, that is all commentary songs, and we're writing that now." As I gasped at that audacious notion, he continued: "We're just piling it on. We're like, we're going to make more fun of the idea of extras than anything else."

All in keeping with the sweetly satirical tone of Dr. Horrible itself, which reminded me at various times of Little Shop of Horrors and, in its more bombastic moments, Sweeney Todd (a Whedon favorite, and mine as well).

[Some mild spoilers follow.] In the title role, and starring with adorable panache: How I Met Your Mother's Neil Patrick Harris, whose musical-theater chops Whedon discovered when attending the 2004 Broadway revival of his idol Stephen Sondheim's Assassins. First seen perfecting his cackling laugh in hopes of being taken seriously by the Evil League of Evil, and reading snarky e-mails from his skeptical online following, Harris plays a wannabe mad scientist — "The world's a mess, and I just need to rule it" — who's perfecting a "freeze ray" with which he can stop time and, according to one lyric, "stop the pain."

Because, you see, Dr. Horrible — real name "Billy" — does have a heart, and it belongs to winsome do-gooder and Laundromat buddy Penny (Felicia Day, one of the "potential" slayers in Buffy's final season). Some of Harris's best work, when he isn't singing arias of evil and comically mugging, is in his bashful, stammering pining for Penny — who naturally falls for Dr. Horrible's arch-nemesis Captain Hammer, a buffoonish cad of a narcissistic superhero ("I don't go to the gym. I'm just naturally like this") played with hilariously villainous cartoon relish by Firefly vet Nathan Fillion.

Everyone in this tortured triangle gets big numbers, from lyrical ballads to soaring (and usually very funny) anthems. Quite a lot of music, written by Whedon with his brother Jed, is crammed into this mini-movie, and if you're like me, you'll want to hear it again and again.

So how did we get lucky enough to get a new Whedon musical at this point in time? Let's just say it's one of the few positive things to come out of the writers' strike.

"I was really sick of not doing things. I'd been writing movies nobody was making. I got tired of that. And even though I had this series (Fox's Dollhouse) coming up, we were on strike—and well, I thought we were going to hold out a little bit longer—but it just felt right," Whedon says. Looking back on the Buffy musical episode, he says: "I never wanted to leave that musical place. I thought about doing this as a podcast just so I could write songs, like a radio show. And then when the strike happened, everything was about making online content. But everything was very overblown. Or underblown. It was either me and my video camera in my backyard or let's partner up and get millions of dollars. Neither of these things was gonna fit the paradigm that will make me a musical, so I finally decided to do it myself."

The idea, he says, "was to show that you can do this [original Internet content] on a very different scale than people are thinking about. I felt like we stretched our dollars just as far as they will go. It's a pretty extraordinary piece even at the price tag it would cost to normally produce it if you couldn't call in any favors." (He won't go on record to discuss the budget, which was much less than the usual hour of TV production, but jokes that it cost "twice as much as Once.")

"Also, we were able to just completely bypass the system—not in a sense of giving the finger to the majors, because we'll probably end up partnering for distribution with somebody if they're interested—and some of the reason this came out the way it did was because people who are employed by the big guys could afford to do this. And we got the Universal backlot for a song because of our relationships there, and people were very sweet. I mean, during the strike there was a certain amount of justifiable bile, but my relationships with the people who actually produce the things, I like to think of as very strong."

Many relationships, personal and professional, came into play in making Dr. Horrible. His brothers Jed and Zack helped him write it, along with Jed's fiance Maurissa Tancharoen. Jed appears as part of a recurring Evil League of Evil chorus and Tancharoen can be seen as one of Captain Hammer's fawning groupies. Whedon cohorts Marti Noxon and David Fury, who both did cameos in "Once More With Feeling," return as snarky newscasters. And then of course there's Fillion, a part of Whedon's repertory company since Buffy and Firefly. "I'd heard him sing, but I just knew that even if he couldn't, he could sell it. He's Nathan, and he was great."

As for casting Neil Patrick Harris, all it took was a phone call. "We all agreed there was really nobody else that should play Dr. Horrible. I didn't even get the sentence out before he said yes. And then I sort of got defensive (Whedon lapses into fanboy-speak): 'No no no, it's really going to be good,' and Neil's like, 'I said yes.' And I said, 'No no no, I mean, but I mean the point is, is mean I mean' ... I couldn't handle it."

The strike ended before filming started, so they postponed the shoot until a break in How I Met Your Mother production in March (wrapping around the same time as the Paley Fest's Buffy reunion which I moderated).

How did this affect Whedon's work on the Dollhouse pilot? "I told Fox going in that I'm making this, it's going to take six days of shooting, and during those six days you'll get bupkis. They're like it doesn't matter, you're still filming your pilot—that you haven't broken yet—in two months." He sighs. "It's been quite a time."

Which begs the question: Could there ever be a musical Dollhouse episode? "Well, Eliza (Dushku) has a lovely voice. But first I have to make a normal Dollhouse, which is hard enough." So how's it going? "There's still tweaks. Birth pangs. It's never simple, but it's going well."

As for Whedon's Internet future, while there has already been talk of Dr. Horrible sequels, for now Whedon is waiting to see how this experiment plays out. "Whether this has any impact on the Internet is unclear to me. It will be something that hasn't been done. And although some people came up with a plan on how to monetize this right away, our first priority was to put this out. We do it for the fans, we do it as an advertisement for itself and for just this culture, this idea of people who are doing something smaller scale but hopefully in such a way they can reach a lot of people. And maybe then it can make us an eleven-ty kadillion dollars. Or maybe it won't."

If there's any justice, Dr. Horrible will eventually make a bundle. Far from horrible, it's terrific.

 "Horrible" Crashes Site
Posted by Sam on Wednesday, 16 Jul 2008

Joss Whedon's internet-only presentation of "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" was so popular for its opening night (Monday) online that the over 200,000 hits per hour literally crashed the Dr. Horrible Website.

It cost viewers $1.99 per download from iTunes, on which it was rated the N0. 1 video download on Monday and Tuesday, and was free on Drhorrible.com. It was that free offer that drove the site to cave-in under the weight of all the mouse clicks it received. It required a last minute scramble by Joss' brother Jed to find a larger server capable of handling the overwhelming amount of traffic. Once that was done, the site was back up and running bright and early Tuesday morning.

Part two of the series will be online and iTunes on Thursday (July 17). "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" stars "Firefly"-"Serenity" Whedon alum Nathan Fillion, Neil Patrick Harris and Felicia Day.

"It's about a low-rent super villain [Harris as Dr. Horrible] who's trying to get into the Evil League of Evil and defeat his nemesis, Captain Hammer [Fillion] and work up the nerve to talk to the pretty girl at the laundromat [Day]," Whedon said .

In 'Dr. Horrible' Comics, It's Hammer Time
Published by Jennifer Vineyard on Monday, July 28, 2008 at 2:02 pm.

You know it didn't just end with Dr. Horrible taking his place in the Evil League of Evil — Joss Whedon is dreaming up more, much more for his supervillain, and first and foremost, it's going to be in comics.

"We'd love to do more Dr. Horrible in any form," he said, "because that's a very rich universe, and it's a comic book universe very specifically."

That's because Dr. Horrible deconstructs superhero stereotypes — the villain is the nice guy, the hero is a jerk, and the girl they want to save they end up destroying with their actions. That's just for starters. The first of the comics, "Be Like Me," was an eight-page webcomic written by Joss' brother Zack from the point of view of Dr. Horrible's arch-nemesis Captain Hammer, and revealed the hero as the corporate tool Horrible always says he is. It'll be included in the bound volume of the My Space Dark Horse Presents collection.

More mini-issues are on the way, revealing more about Hammer as well as other characters. Such as:

"We want to do a Moist comic," Whedon said, referring to Horrible's friend-in-crime, who made it into the Henchman's Union; his ability is to dampen things, as evidenced by his profusive sweating. Not too impressive, but perhaps there's more to him than meets the eye — after all, he at least went out on dates.

"We also want to do a Fake Thomas Jefferson comic," Whedon added. "No one who is in the Evil League of Evil shouldn't be in there, except Fake Thomas Jefferson, who's pointless."

If more comics are to be had on the members of the League, Fury Leika is just begging for one to be called "Woman Scorned." And there's also rich material to come with the inevitable bumping-of-the-heads between Bad Horse (a take on Whedon's publisher Dark Horse?) and Horrible, considering Bad Horse's philosophy is "go kill someone" and Horrible's is "killing is not elegant or creative."

Given that the League is under the false impression that Horrible has made a kill — giving him credit for a murder he didn't commit — is he going to have to step up his evil game and do it for real? Those are other questions are waiting to be answered, but don't except the answers anytime soon — these won't be comics that will be out once a month. The next one is more likely to coincide with the DVD release of the webisodes.

"I'm very happy to say that we all have jobs," Whedon said, "so we're not all sitting around and saying, 'What are we going to do today?' We all have a lot of work — [Dr. Horrible co-writers and brother] Jed [Whedon] and Maurissa [Tancharoen] are working on 'Dollhouse,' Zack is staffed on 'Fringe,' but we all love the universe and Zack did such a great job that we all want to go back there."

Dr. Horrible Sings Again, Gets Moist
Published by Jennifer Vineyard on Friday, August 29, 2008 at 1:27 pm.

Dr. Horrible hasn't given up on his plans of world domination — and neither have his creators. The promised soundtrack so you can actually sing along to "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" will be downloadable on iTunes as of September 2, and the next comic is already being written by Zack Whedon.

"The soundtrack is rapidly approaching," Whedon said. "And all those cut-offs, where the songs would just end," such as on "Freeze Ray," when Neil Patrick Harris sings, "I will stop..." just as he's interrupted and forced to stop singing, "they will be on there as they are on the show. They're just in a much higher quality, and no sound effects. I sing along to everything and it'll be weeks before I can stop. It's driven me mad. Luckily, I can still hold down a job."

That job would be writing for J.J. Abrams' new television show "Fringe" and writing "Fringe" comics, but on weekends, Whedon is freelancing on more Dr. Horrible-themed webcomics. His first one focused on Captain Hammer, and the next will be about Horrible's friend-in-crime, Moist.

"I'm interested in exploring how Moist became Moist," Whedon said. "It'll be 'Moist: Humidity Rising.' He is so far from making it into the Evil League of Evil, because he really isn't that bad at all." (Instead, Moist is in the Henchman's Union, because he accumulated enough hours "assisting evil people, and inconveniencing people. It doesn't take much," Whedon said.)

Whedon said they've talked about Fake Thomas Jefferson being next up. "Maybe we can get Drew [Goddard] to do some," Whedon said, considering Goddard played FTJ in the webisodes and wrote the "Wolves at the Gate" arc in the Buffy Season Eight comics. "That's a no-brainer for him. And that would be a coup."

And after that, it's up for grabs. "All of the Evil League of Evil characters have elaborate and hilarious backstories," Whedon said. "You could even do one about the groupies in an Archies comics style. Anyone who is seen in the web musical is a candidate for an eight-page comic in my book."

But because Whedon's moonlighting and he doesn't have an exact deadline — he'd like to time the next comic to the DVD release — "it's a ways off. Who knows? I could have one productive weekend and it's done, but no one should be holding their breath. Fortunately, I have a big support system, and my brothers [Joss and Zed] can also pick up some of the slack."

In the meantime, hang tight if you wish to be considered for the Evil League of Evil (the ten best three-minute video applications get on the DVD). Try and reach Bad Horse, and you get a response of "Please stand by. P.S. Please forgive the absence of song. The Bad Horse Chorus currently is recovering from a Horrible hang-over."

"When people are supposed to be submitting, it'll be abundantly clear how," Whedon promised. "Everyone will know."

One of our favorite producers Joss Whedon is back in the news with a new form of internet muscial/podcast - one you have probably all heard about by now.  But if not.... here is Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog, starring Neil Patrick Harris (Doogie Hauser) as Dr. Horrible ("bad guy") and Nathan Fillion (Captain Mal Reynolds from Serenity) as The Hammer ("good" guy).  Joss came up with the idea during the last writers strike.

Quite enjoyable and not all that long.

Available for download for a few bucks from iTunes or free from DrHorrible.com.  All three parts now up for your viewing pleasure.  Music by Jed and Joss Whedon.

Felicia Day is too cute... even when you can't see her.  And I gotta give major props to Joss Whedon for giving a small tip of the hat to Stephen Sondheim at the end of the song.  (I'm sorry, is my musical theater nerd showing? :P)

I definitely need to save up and buy this DVD.

A commentary track in the form of a musical?!?  Whedon is a GENIUS!  OK; I have to buy this DVD now.  Anyone seen it in brick & mortar stores, or is it only available online?

I got the DVD a few day back and it's great. I also watched the Evil League of Evil Applications, those were a lot of fun (even though I wasn't one of them), but I did find Malevolent Shadow in the Dishonorable Mentions in the right column 27 down. Pretty high up on the list, I don't know if that means anything, but I think it's cool.

That was hilarious.  Joss could not have gotten a better group of people for that "show".

On another not did anyone catch Nathan Fillion's new show "Castle" last night?  We watched it and it was pretty enjoyable.

I'm just happy Nathan Fillion is finally on a show that lasted more then a few episodes! First Firefly, then that show "Drive" or something that lasted like 3 eps, then a guest spot on Desperate Housewives for half a season or so...
Finally he gets some steady work!

Ok, time to hand in my geek card. I only JUST NOW realized that Moist is played by Simon Helberg. When he popped his head in on the Emmy intro I said, wow Moist really looks like Wolowitz!
