Great show!  Despite the non-trek feel and attitude of The Man Trap, it was actually one of my favorite episodes when I first started watching Star Trek as a kid.  The 'monster in disguise' thing really resonated with me.  I also liked the interplay between the characters- Uhura's flirty conversation with Spock was pretty cool, as was the final showdown with Spock laying the smack-down on the salt-vampire.  Keep 'em coming, Rico!

Rico,

Thanks again for including me in the Podcast. Very astute observation on your part noticing the similarities in Interstellar Suite and Holst's Planets. Yes I'm sure Amin was influenced by that composer. Also back in the 70's a Japanese synthasist called Isao Tomita made a electronic version of Holst's Planets which included a launch much like the one on Amin's recording. Amin has sited Isao Tomita as a major influence and I bet you must have heard his recording and remembered it as well.

Rick,

Really enjoyed your Father and Son review. That was a cool idea! I see where you found Tomita's The Planets but you can also see a video version of Tomita's The Planets on YouTube. If you click into the video You can get access to all the other parts. I personally don't care for his synthesized version.

And Rico...Fun podcast!

As for killing the salt vampire I'm not sure that I would say the episode was not really Star Trek. The circumstances are completely different than they were in Devil In The Dark. I do not think there could have been a way of saving the salt vampire. The captain's life was in danger and there really was no alternative that could be seen. The salt vampire was going to use whatever was at it's disposal for survival. The Horta was protecting it's young and it was the intrusion of men that endangered them. Men therefore had an obligation to set things right. They were only fortunate enough to have figured it out before the mother Horta was killed. Anyway, I do not think the two situations can really be compared. Sometimes drastic measure must be taken. Especially if it's an us or them situation for survival.

Whahahahahhaahahahahhahahaha

Great Father and Son review.  Sooo funny.

Great podcast as always.  The episode was not a favorite of mine and I give it 2 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed all the aspects of the podcast this week.  Rico, you do such an excellent job of sewing everything together.

This episode was like a cool little monster show.  I loved seeing the salt sucker monster at the Star Trek Experience.  I got my pictures taken with it.

Cool intro from Doc, neat music segment from Rob, the RPG promo was AWESOME!  Way to go Kenny and Jen!  The sound efx and the music were great!  It was neat to hear from Nathaniel- I downloaded that interview stuff and am looking forward to listening more--

then Rico- spot on with the outtakes.  You really nailed the episode.  You have such a great outlook on things and many times I find myself thinking something and then you say it.  VERY COOL.  That's why I like this podcast.  You talk about things that are interesting to me, most people roll their eyes when I talk about Trek...  :)

Thanks for playing our Father and Son Review... we laughed so hard that we had to do it over like three times!!  I'm glad I didn't spit out too much of what I was drinking!  I would have ruined my laptop.  When Nathan gets crazy, then it is so hard to get it done.

The collectible was cool.  I learn a lot about movies and stuff when you review props and such.

Great job Rico!

I will be working next week during the live cast, but Year of Hell is one of my all time favorites of Voyager.  The Krenim... heheh.
My wife gets tired of me watching that one over and over.  :)  Cool concept.  Are you accepting any audio comments on that show? Can you do that live?

Let me know.

KTrek - catch the creature (stun it) and toss it in a cage with some salt or put it on a planet.  Pretty easy solution.  I still feel this episode was not typical of how they dealt with many later aliens they would meet.  Heck, they even made friends with enemies that killed many more that one little salt vampire in the future.  Klingons, Romulans, Borg, etc.

Thanks for the complement Rick. I loved the episode Rico... I have to say this is one of my least favorite TOS episodes though. And I agree with Ktrek... it was killing people left and right, and tried to kill the captain. Did the monster in Devil in the Dark go after Kirk? Maybe that was the salt sucker's deadly mistake. :D
Don't mess with the Shat!

I think there were other people in ST (as a whole) that were killed off... I can recall a couple in TNG that were vaporized... I remember the girl in the episode involving the Acamarian Gathers who's family held a vendetta against one of the individuals in the group of people who Picard was trying to smooth relations with. Riker toasted her after she tried to kill another individual.

Hi guys!  Well, after many months of being a "lurking" listener, I've finally decided to join the forum!  I'm very glad that everyone enjoyed the clip from Inside Star Trek -- I hope to be able to provide Rico with another clip to include in the next show.  I'm very glad I decided to go with the Dee Kelley interview, since it was very appropriate to the Man Trap (have to admit, not one of my faves either..).

Great Father and Son review, Moyers!  I really enjoy your segments each week.  My son is a little young to appreciate the nuances of Trek (he's 6) but is rapidly becoming obsessed with Star Wars.   :troopersmile I hope to indoctrinate him to TOS when he's a little older.

Keep up the great work, Rico.  Love the podcast and happy to be able to contribute!

Best regards,
Nathaniel
