Title: Am I crazy or what?
Post by: Ktrek on February 08, 2008, 09:27:44 PM
Here is a link to a $6 Million dollar Home theater:

Now is there something wrong with me that I just find this absurd? I mean I like to have a nice TV and a decent sound system but this is just extravagant. I would not be able to live with myself in this kind of opulence. I can't help but think of all the people in this world $6 million could help. Why would anyone be so selfish as to think this was a good thing? I am not opposed to people making money but I think you should be socially responsible and live modestly. Six million on that theater is just such a pitiful waste.  :'(

I have to agree, that is more insane than my idea of a home theater.  And trust me, I thought I was nuts.

I see your point, and if I had that kind of money, I wouldn't do that either... but how do you know they haven't just donated 12 million to a charity?

It's all relative.  There is always someone that makes more money and has more than you do.  And there is always someone with less who thinks you live extravagantly.  I have found most people who are very well off tend to donate a lot to charity.  For tax purposes if nothing else.

Well, as a Christian even if I made the kind of money where I could afford such a home theater I would not do it. There are so many other more beneficial things to do with your money. That's just self-indulgent and extravagant. I suppose that's one the reasons Jesus said "it's easier for a rich man to go through the eye of a needle then to enter into the Kingdom of God".

I think the system is overkill personally. For 6 million dollars, I would have built more of a theatre, so that more people could enjoy it. But I tend to agree that I could not spend that type of money on a home theatre. I think with anything, the more money you put into it, then less and less noticeable results you get. I suspect that the millions and millions he spent, a lot of people, me included, would not notice the difference over a person who spent a fraction of that.

Here is another link with some more pictures. It looks more cluttered then anything to me

I am not sure if I can comment on if it is right or not, as I am sure people could pass judgement on me for having a basement full of collectibles. My wifes family in China live quite modestly, but I am sure to them if they saw my lifestyle, they might view me the same way we are viewing this fellow. It would be nice if the world was more equal for everyone, but unfortunately it is not.

I try not to judge others, lest ye be judged yourself.  ;)

I agree with Jeff and Rico. There are people less fortunate than ourselves, and to them we may be viewed in the same light as some may see the guy who blew 6 million on an entertainment center. To someone who can't buy shoes, a middle class person spending $1,000 or more on a nicer television would fall into the same catagory.

I have no interest in getting into a philisophical debate with anyone. But I have to say the Bible simply states that is difficult for a rich person to get to Heaven....not impossible. Difficult because money can sometimes turn people to the Darkside.  :yoda

I'm under the impression that it was money that he made. If you can't spend the money that you make the way that you want ... why are we all trying to make money? I'd love to have six mil to kick around, but I don't. I'm not going to fault someone else for getting in a position that I'm not in and having funds that I don't have access to. To do so just kind of makes you jealous and I'm pretty sure that envy is as big a sin as pride and glutony. In fact I think that it falls squarely under that whole 10th comandment about covetting, but that's just me.

I can't speak for others but I can say with certainty that I have no jealousy or even envy for this guy. I think if I could put my feelings into a word or two it would be more along the lines of pity and sadness.

we really don't know this guy (pardon the pun) from Adam.

So it's not for us to judge either way.

I know what I would do with six million.  :)

:knight

Can you imagine having that much money?

wow.

Oh well, I am rich in other areas!

I think that if he spends six million on that, then if nothing else I would say that at the very least is judgement is at least impaired, and he is definetly overcompensating for something that is definetly lacking in his
life.

I would disagree. He spent his money of not only something that he considers a passion of his, but something he hopes to use to push the boundries and development of home entertainment systems. To him it's a lab to investigate a field that he wants to get into.

People are constantly spending money on the things that they like and from the way the story is written, this is more than just a place to watch movies for him. He's trying to push the knowledge of home entertainment systems.

I know a girl that loves computers and her job as a counter hacker that she bought a Cray and went to town on all of the extras. Some people might think it was overboard, but it was the culmination of her hobby, her job, and her passion.

If I had that much disposable income to put into something that I love, I would do it in a heart beat. It's not because I'm lacking anything, but I would love to push the limits of my hobbies and create something that allows me to investigate them in ways that I didn't imagine yesterday.

I was in hi-fi before I switched to computers and there were definitely freaky people spending lots of money on expensive tech.  But that beats anything I ever saw.  What I found strange was REALLY UGLY expensive equipment.  So he has made that entire room ugly with that expensive junk.  I can't imagine not being able to make a better sounding and looking room for less then $500,000.  ROFL

I always think it's interesting how judgemental normally fair minded people can become when it comes to $, myself included. Ultimately, we live in a somewhat free society and have the power of choice, be careful when you judge others as we are all guilty of transgressions others might find offensive and wrong.
