Title: The Ready Room Mircocast
Post by: Geekyfanboy on January 28, 2008, 01:54:51 PM
Jen and I came up with a cool way of keeping folks informed on the RPG game. We are doing a very short 10 to 15 minute mircocast talking about the RPG. Rico was kind enough to allow us to tag it on to his Treks in Sci Fi stream.

So here is a thread where you guys can let us know what you think of our new microcast.

I just got done listening.  EXCELLENT!  I can't wait to hear more.  You guys had a great flow together.  I think it will help enourage participation and creativty.  I love the idea of interviewing different writers about their characters and so on.  Very cool.

Keep it up!

Great show guys. A cool idea as well would be having an episode where you could go over how to create characters and how to write your first few posts for new people.

Only very minor technical comment is sometimes I felt like the music was too loud.

Looking forward to more!

Thanks guys for your comments... I think it turned out pretty good for our first try..

Thanks Billybob on the suggestion on the "how to create a characters"..that's a cool idea.

Thanks for the suggestion. Yeah, I'm using GarageBand to edit it. I'm sort of new to it, but realized I should probably put the louder music on their own tracks... I noticed the same thing. :)

Wow. I'm impressed with all of this and all of the work that Jen, Kenny, and Rico are putting into making the RPG work. This is fantastic. Please keep up the good work.

I really enjoyed listening to your podcast but the quality was a distraction for me through most of it. Not only did Kenny and Jen seem distant but there is a low rumble throughout and the music was too loud. Anyway, I look forward to future updates.

The low rumble is suppose to be like you're on the ship. We noticed the music issue and plan on fixing it. As for the filter on the voices we tried to alter it a bit to get the tinnie sound out of it since we did it over skype. Like I said.. not bad for our first try. Will get better as we go.

We would like to add a Trek monologue to the beginning of the microcast. Something that sounds Trekish without borrowing from the all to familiar: "Space... The final frontier. These are the voyages..." If our fellow RPG writers have the itch to write one please PM Kenny and I with your submission. We'll pick our favorite and announce the winner on the podcast.

:thumbsup I thought the microcast was really superb for that first time effort.  I recognized the low rumble as ship background (certainly you were on board), and didn't think the music was too loud, well maybe a tad.

:thumbsup I also thought the rapport between you two was excellent.

But I have to know how you two guys recorded that since it clearly didn't sound like it was done over skype or a telephone.  I would have thought you were in the same room but I doubt that was the case.

:thumbsup The room echo effect and excitement in your voices it made it sound more professional to me (in that the pros do things to spice audio up).

So super job and let's have more.

Thanks Vartok for those kind words... yes we did do it over skype.. but with the filter Jen put on it, it took away the phone line sound. Expect episode 2 next week sometime...

Well, I think I've learned which sound tracks to omit or edit down to a whisper for the Microcast. The First Contact Theme is too loud in places....I thought it sounded fine when I was working on it, but it sounds very different after its exported. But the First Contact "Nexus" track and the Insurrection "New Sight"  track seems to work much, much better as bed music. What did you guys think? I took off the voice filter that made it seem like we were in a big room...

I've played around with different background sounds, music and so forth on the podcast.  You really need to be careful with it.  I eventually decided it's just a lot more trouble than it's worth - at least for me.  One suggestion I do have though for the Microcast.  I would suggest trying to balance the voice soundtrack first before adding any background music.  What I mean is normalize it.  Garage Band should have a function to pass over the track and average the voices out so they sound closer in level.  Then I would amplify the whole voice track a little before adding any background sound.  Just some suggestions.  Completely up to you guys on what you decide to do.
Title: Re: The Ready Room Mircocast
Post by: billybob476 on February 07, 2008, 10:46:08 AM
What if, instead of using music throughout, you just used some clips as bumpers between topics?
Title: Re: The Ready Room Mircocast
Post by: Jen on February 07, 2008, 11:23:45 AM
Sometimes I tune out when there's nothing to peak my ears. I've found that bed music keeps the conversation lively. I think using the slide sound effect works well between segments, but I turned it down too much. I stayed up until 1 am three nights  in a row working on it and I over looked some things that I wouldn't ordinarily do because I was tired.

I have set the track volume on the music tracks to lower itself when we speak. The problem is that some parts of the First Contact theme are much louder than others. If I turn it down manually, you can't hear the softer part. So, by simply using music that remains consistently quiet, I can keep it from overpowering our voices.

The other factor is that our mics are different. Kenny's is quieter than mine. We're working on fixing that. It's easier to to turn down a voice than turn it up that  can distort it.

I personally prefer the way that Jen and Kenny have the music going.  If they used it as a bumper...its....too much used in podcasts.  Although its always successful, I prefer the way they have it.  However, you do need to figure out a way to prevent the music becoming too loud.

Great Microcast.

I like it too, just offering alternatives. I haven't done much audio work in my life but from what I understand it does take awhile to dial everything in properly!

Thanks guys for your feedback.. we are still tweaking the show.. it's only our second one. We soon have a standard of how to do things.. may take us a few more shows to get it all right.

Keep the suggestions coming.

Hey guys.. Jen posted this a few weeks ago

"We would like to add a Trek monologue to the beginning of the microcast. Something that sounds Trekish without borrowing from the all to familiar: "Space... The final frontier. Anybody have any suggestions???

Hmm....I'd make one, but I'm not sure if my voice would sound right....

But I could think up the dialouge for it.

Hmm, something that doesn't use "Space the final frontier" but sounds trekish.....

This will take a while.

Knowledge, the life's blood of the Federation. These are the voyages of the Starship Tiberius. Our mission: To explore uncharted space, to serve as ambassadors to new lifeforms and new civilations, to unlock the secrets of the universe around us.

That's very rough and based on an exploration/scientific mission profile.

I'm not sure I like it, but I'll try to clean it up anyway.

Hey All... let me know what you think of #3. I wanted to give Jen a break so I edited this one and had so much fun.. I'm still working on my audio, something is up with my computer and mic. I boosted my voice where I could but when everyone was talking I could not. Anyways let me know what works and what didn't work for the editing... as usual the content of great..

I'm having a great time doing these Jen.

It's hard to believe that this is only the third podcast; the format and production value rival a lot of other podcasts cluttering up the internet.  Once again; great job, guys!

Question for you guys.. what did you think of the opening monologue in mircocast #3? Did you like it.. now disregard that it was read by me.. we plan on getting someone else to read it.. but what did you think of the words? Does if work for our crew and mission?

If not what would you change.

Well Ready Room #4 is up now... we were still having some technical issues with Pamela (the program that records it) and Skype... At times are voices go out of sync.

Anyways let us know what you think.. we also are asking for more opening monologs, readings of favorite posts or better yet a dramatization or just voice comments that we can integrate into our show. So if you have a free moment and can record a little something send it my way.

thanks,
Kenny

Okay gang... I created an email account for our Ready Room podcast. So if you want to send us email comments or suggestions or better yet an audio comment or suggestion (mp3)... or read a post or do a dramatization you can email them to:

TheReadyRoomPodcast@gmail.com

And remember we are looking for folks to do our monologue for the opening of the show. Either do the one we already have or make up your own and send it to us.

Thanks everyone for your support.. Jen and I are still working out the kinks but we're having a great time doing these... look for episode 5 this week.

I thought I'd have a whack at the intro to the RPG like Just X had posted.  It might be mildly cheesy to some, but I thought I'd throw it out there:

The Tiberius: A running River

These are the writings of the Treks in Sci Fi forum.

Its journey, to explore the universe around us.

To bring a group of people together.

To boldly write where no one has read before.

Its an attempt.

The Ready Room Podcast has come to it's end. We had a great 2 year run and would like to thank all those who participated in reading, doing interviews,  and writing this wonderful Treks in Sci Fi RPG.

I would like to personally Thank Jen, my co-host. She entered the RPG in it's infancy and made it a fun and wild ride. We started The Ready Room together and though it may have fizzled out towards the end we had a wonderful time doing it. We then added Rick Moyer who already did a awesome job at composing music for The Ready Room, but when we took him on as a third co-host our show was elevated to a whole new level. Though I talk with both of them everyday I do miss doing The Ready Room with them. It's funny but I guess The Ready Room podcast was our training ground as we have all moved on to our own podcasts; Jen has Anomaly, Rick has Take Him With You and I have Knights of the Guild.

I would like to thank one more person.. Rico, if you hadn't started Treks in sci fi I wouldn't have gotten the bug for podcasting (sending in many comments towards the beginning). We also wouldn't have done The Ready Room and share in your feed. So Thank you for all you have done for us. As I always say Rico's Treks in sci fi podcast is the Father of all our podcasts including Meds "Waffle On", and Tim's "Appytimes".

Thank you for a wonderful two years.

A big thanks to Kenny, Jen, Rick, and everyone that helped with the Ready Rooms and the RPG.  Your casts are definitely going to be missed but I'm very happy it inspired you to do your "own thing" too.  That was always one of my goals for my podcast and this forum.  To try and inspire others in several ways.  Anytime any of you want to guest host or anything like that, just ask.  The mic is always open.  ;)
