Character History
After Drett's first host, the symbiont decided it would rather die than be joined to another male, for Kabric was a hot head and a dare devil who kick the bucket way too soon. Drett has been lucky that every host since Kabric, has been an even-tempered female who lives out her life happily and quietly... except for one... Ryla. Though her occupation is fairly anodyne, Ryla Drett seems to enjoy endangering herself when off duty. Her preferred means of jeopardizing their lives is caving... and she has narrowly avoided death on many shore leave adventures.
Drett was joined to Ryla while the host was attending Starfleet Academy. Her first assignment, as a Joined Trill, was on the USS Boris Yegorov, a medical vessel named for the first Terran physician in space. While serving aboard the Yegorov, she cared for expectant mothers and aided the eradication of a birth defect, which threatened to wipe out the people of Sevarus VI.
Seven years later, she was recruited by Doctor Peterson and transferred to Tiberius as his Obstetrics Specialist. A year after the destruction of Tiberius, she accepted a post as Assistant Chief Medical Officer on Arabella.
Ryla was killed by friendly fire during a Borg Attack in the Arabella's lounge (see season 8 ) as she attempted to protect Commander Sevryll's children. Upon the arrival of the Cooperative Queen from the Mirror Universe, the Queen resurrected Ryla minus the symbiont known as Drett. Ryla is currently undergoing counseling with Margon to cope with the loss.
First there was Kabric, a venturesome free spirit who got himself killed at the age of twenty-five, scaling Tenaran Ice Cliffs on the Trill homeworld. Drett was a young symbiont and Kabric a youthful host...the trauma of that event prompted Drett's decision to die rather than be joined with another male—they were just too reckless.
The next host was Felahras an artist who made her living painting the portraits of bureaucrats. She lived to see the first of her twelve great-great grandchildren, before dying peacefully in her sleep at her home on the edge of Lake Ograls.
After Felahras, Drett was joined with Ameel—a musician who taught at the Tenaran Music Academy until her death seventy years later. Drett was then joined with Onaurra, who was a curator at the Devritane Museum. She raised five children, three of which grew to adulthood.
Jaunairim, followed Omaurra. She was a botanist who discovered several rare plant species, one of which was later used in the vaccine that cured Ooperat Disease. Jaunairim died unexpectedly from an allergic reaction to a fruit she discovered on Vallerep's third moon. The only available host at the time was Ryla Emarin. If Drett had known that Ryla was an adventurer, the symbiont would have insisted it die with Jaunairim.
Ryla was a student at Starfleet Academy when she was joined with the Drett symboint. Typically, only 300 symbionts are available for hosting each year and competition for the few symbionts is fierce. It is said Ryla's sharp intellect propelled her to the top of the list, for she made it through the demanding selection procedure overseen by the Symbiosis Commission and was chosen to be Drett's next host.
She credited those who came before her for many of the interests, skills and experience she brandished as a doctor. But being a compassionate individual was her own contribution to Drett's future hosts. Their personalities would be tempered by the combined experiences of Drett's previous hosts and just as Ryla calls upon their insights, those who follow her would one day call upon Ryla's. In a sense, the symbiont will allow her to live on after her body has long become dust.
Sunrises are always more vibrant after a joining. One can literally taste the glow of the crimson and amethyst sky, hear the zest of the sun's ascent, enjoy the harmony of its musical transition and feel the entire experience with the intense passion of a youthful infatuation. Though she had enjoyed countless sunrises in her twenty years, Ryla studied the scene before her with the wonderment of an eager child, and at the same time with the seasoned perception of every host that came before her. The preparation for Trill joining, could not prime her for the gravity that would pull her in and integrate her essence with so many others; like spices merging to flavor a rare dish. Yet, Ryla was honored to add her experiences to the collation of memories.
She pulled her knees closer to her as she sat a top Mak'ala mountain, on the Trill Home World. The air was thin and cold but the sensation it created, as it touched her skin and filled her lungs, was invigorating. Her short flaxen hair whipped about as the wind continued to stir the peak she perched upon. The young Trill was not the same person she had been a day before. Her personality was intact, but her character had transitioned liked the sunrise she savored. Ryla was reborn and she hoped the feeling that infused her soul would dictate the way she lived the rest of her life.
