I've seen this a long time ago, but I personally think its a great comparison.  PS3 stinks, simple as that. ;)

PS3 does not stink. The content currently available is sub-par.

So what does a 360 look like?

I have to agree with Blackride. The PS3 simply hasn't realised it's full potential yet. Next year should see some improvement and then we will see what it can offer us. Until then I think it's a little unfair to say it stinks.

Sorry, hasty thing to say....how about: doesn't compete right now.  Which you can't deny that.  The fact that I can go out to Target and pick up a PS3 and not a Wii/360 says a lot.

As a mac user I have learned to hold back being negative about someone elses computer.  I wouldn't put down somone's game machine.  Though I love the PS2 and was really disappointed with the PS3, there are people out there who love their PS3 and I try to take that into account.  That being said if someone is shopping and wanting my advice on what to decide I advise the wii or the Xbox360 because they are selling well and will have a lot of choices for games.

I think the corprate culture that put root kits on cds and aggressive copy protection on DVDs, has probably blead over to the gaming side of Sony.  I hope the PS4 will be a huge hit.

Yeah, I'll give you that Link. I think maybe the PS3 is probably ahead of it's time, It's trying to be too clever for it's own good, and not doing so well. I defend it because the original Playstation has a very special place in my heart. I loved that machine {possibly more than any other since} and played on it endlessly. I also have a PS2 which is also great. I've always been a bit of a Sony fanboy and I really wanted the PS3 to do well, I'm sure that it will find it's niche in the market eventually.

What I always liked about playstation is that your old playstation games didn't have to be put out to pasture because the new console would play them too.  This was a good system for me.  I'm not a good gamer I just like to go play in the 3d environments.  I don't normally get very far in the game.  And the huge price of the PS3 kept me away.  Too much to play in a 3D environment.

I think the broad adoption of Blu-Ray is going to be a big boost to future PS3 sales as a nice $400 game counsol/Blu-Ray player.

Both systems are fun imo and are directed at two different audiences. It's nice to have options!

I own all three major consoles (got my PS3 right after Thankgiving last year) and can say with authority that none of them stink.  They all have qualities that make them appealing to casual as well as hardcore gamers.  The only way I can imagine someone could be disappointed by owning only one of these systems is if you are a hardcore gamer and all you have is a Wii.  While the Wii has fun games and alot to do, it falls short when you try to play the more traditional types of games, particularly the sandbox style 3rd person adventure games like Scarface or the Godfather.  The control schemes just didn't work for me and I never got used to them for this type of game, or for first person shooters like Metroid Prime or Medal of Honor for that matter either.

I play the 360 and PS3 more than my Wii even though I really enjoy Super Mario Galaxy and Resident Evil 4.  I'm looking forward to trying the light gun style games on the Wii, Umbrella Chronicles and Ghost Squad, when I get a chance.  Wii is best for the unusual, new experience, where you are looking for something unique and different; l'm thinking of games like Wii Sports, Zack and Wiki, Trauma Center, Raving Rabbids, and a few more.  Wii is a no brainer if you have kids anywhere from 4 to 14 as there is alot for them to do and enjoy with that system.

360 is best for the cutting edge, newest games that push the current generation hardware with stellar, top notch graphics, highest quality sound, and more media options than you can shake a stick at.  The newest, best games are currently coming out first and usually run best on the 360, and with the install base (numbers of people with a particular system in their homes) giving Microsoft more and more of an advantage over PS3 as time goes on, this is not likely to change anytime in the near future.  Hard to say what this will look like in 2-3 years, but at that point we will likely be hearing more about the next generation of Xbox 3 and PS4 anyway.  The social aspects of Xbox live are also a huge feature.  Xbox live arcade has a great number of casual, quick to jump in and play type games that are easily downloaded right to your system and usually pretty cheap.

PS3's major benefit is the humongous back catalog of PS2 and original PS games that are mostly playable through backward compatibility if you buy the 20, 60, or 80 gb SKU's.  Even while most PS3 gamers continue to wait for the big name exclusive current gen releases like Metal Gear Solid 4, Little Big Planet, and Final Fantasy 13, they have a massive collection of old great games they can pop in and play while they wait.  Most of the titles worth playing that were made for the 360 are ported over to PS3 pretty soon after, and as time goes on the lead time new games have on 360 will get smaller and smaller, especially as some multi platform games are currently being developed with PS3 as the lead SKU.

Sorry for the long post, but sometimes I feel the need to put into words my justification for spending so much damn money on my passion, video games, and cant help ranting when I get the chance.  Good thing I'm not into collectibles like some of you freaks on there, or my wife and kids would never have money to eat ;)

Which version of the PS3 do you have Joby?  Are there pluses or minuses to the newer ones?  I'm toying with the idea of getting one sometime.  Any idea if a newer updated version is coming?

I have the new 40 gig one. It will not play older PS2 games but I mainly have it for movies. I would also like to note that it is very quiet. I've heard some people say the opposite but that seems to be a fluke mechanical problem rather than the norm.

Also here is hoping they update the firmware to do HD DTS. There are lots of rumors on that on other boards.

I bought the 80 gig, which was packed with the game Motorstorm and features full backwards compatibility with PS2 and PS for $499 US.  The newest version has a 40 gig hard drive, no PS2 compatibility and limited PS compatibility, two fewer USB ports (the other versions have 4) and some other missing features (I think something to do with SD card slots or something like that) but it is only $399 US.  I have not heard of another PS3 sku coming out anytime soon, and I would tend to doubt that they will release another SKU considering there have now been FOUR different versions since the PS3 launched a year ago.  It's very confusing to the average consumer, I consider myself extremely well versed in all things about the console market and even I can't keep track of the differences in all the different models of the systems.  I'd suggest staying away from the 40 gig system unless you know for sure that you don't plan on playing the old PS2 library anymore.  Backwards compatibility and access to the huge library of old Sony games was the number one feature for me when I decided to spring for my PS3.

My PS3 is whisper quiet as well, Blackride, sometimes I leave it on by accident and cant even tell its on, which concerns me a bit because I don't want the thing to overheat from being on for a week at a time.  The silence of the system is a nice change from the 360 that I'm used to, which sounds like a jet plane taking off whenever it's reading a disc.

And while I was extolling the virtues of the three consoles currently on the market, I forgot to mention the biggest, most appealing feature of the PS3, the integrated High Definition Blu-Ray player.  For a year now the PS3 was the cheapest option for a high def player, and you get the added bonus of being able to play all the great games.  Another plus the sony system has over the 360 is the built in wireless internet access.  To use that feature on the 360 you have to buy a hundred dollar adapter.
