New show is up folks.  Featuring a look at the classic episode, "The Enterprise Incident."  A good Spock and Kirk episode.   :vulcan

I wonder if DC Fontana had "The Enterprise Incident" script on the shelf for awhile. Since this gem of an episode was not produced till the third season, the studio may have been apprehensive to take a chance with Kirks character being in question. Descent in the Ranks of the Federation? Never!

Will Smith may have a promising future as an engineer on a star ship if he ever gets the role. He and Scotty both reconfigured an alien device by integrating with more familiar technology - Scotty with the "Sargon/NOMAD" cloaking device and Cpt. S. Hiller (Smith) uploading malicious spam to the alien mothership with a legacy OS apple powerbook! ;)

Really enjoyed the episode, liked your comments and will have to watch this episode as it has been awhile. Enjoyed Ricks comments as well, and enjoyed the music section as well, learned a lot about a composer I did not know much about before.

After listening with episode 153, I was left with the following questions on my mind - about consistency in the Star Trek universe:

1. Do you imagine what kind of protest would the Romulan Empire put up after this act of piracy? They invaded Romulan territory (not just the neutral zone, but into the Romulan space indeed), they infiltrated disguised in a Romulan ship, stolen a device of their making (with Spock leaving a confession of sabotage on record!) and kidnapped a Romulan captain !!!! Wouldn't all that cause the rupture of any treat and the start of a full-scale war?

2. Most important, if a cloaking device is so small that can be carried by a single man and so easy to install as Scott could do it in so short time, isn't it very illogical that no Federation vessel had a cloaking for many, many years afterwards - not until the Defiant in DS9 time !?!?! How would anyone explain that ??

3. Neither could the Federation tech staff, by examining the emanating device, find a countermeasure, a way to detect thru the cloaking?

Basically, this act of Enterprise accomplished nothing, changed nothing in the years to follow!

Do anyone see anything that I am not seeing??

Good points Ric, let me try and answer them somewhat.  As far as the first point this was an "off the record" mission.  Pretty typical for the military to perform covert missions.  It allows Starfleet and the Federation to deny it.  The Romulans knew that and knew it would do them no good to create an uproar.

Cloaking technology was determined by the Federation to be against what they stood for and therefore Starfleet vessels were generally not going to carry cloaks.  A few exceptions have happened of course.  The main purpose I always felt was so Starfleet could reverse engineer it and be able to detect it.  The original Trek series never got a chance to explore that.  There are a few statements in the episode that make you believe Starfleet might of even used the cloaking device for awhile, but that "new technology was fleeting" and soon this particular cloaking device would be useless.

Hope some of this helps.

Just got done listening last night.  VERY NICE!  Great episode.

I really enjoyed your take on it, great clips Rico.  Nice Vartock segments, the collectible was cool too.

Yes, Ric- I have thought all of the things you put down as well.  This wasn't the most "logical" episode, but it was good TV.

By the way, they made it a law not to have cloaking ships in the Federation.  Some convention or something...thats why they never researched it.  Though Pegasus is an exception.

Rico, OK on the denyability reasoning for the Romulans not making an uproar - or a war.

And OK, you got a good way out: this cloaking technology was reverse engineered, so anyone could detect it - no point in using it, if so.
And the cloakings that we see on subsequent Romulans ships were of another technology.

I can live with that... You saved the ST time-line!....
