Title: Progression on my house
Post by: moyer777 on December 13, 2007, 05:18:57 PM
Well a lot of progression made on the house today.  The contractors are getting the roof done, in fact I just got over to the house and the roof is finished.  Now, when thy got into fixing the boys room I had some bad news, the corner of my house was rotten.  Take a look.  All said and done I had to take a loan out for the damage not caused by the storm, but it was no sweat.  We must have had a leak there for some time.   I am looking forward to moving home when they finish.  The insulation goes in on Monday, sheet rock on Tuesday and Wednesday....  we'll see.  Amy picked out paint and carpet.

I hope I'm not boring anyone, but here are some pictures.   It should start looking nicer as the days go by!

Love,

Rick

That is good they are making progress, and so quickly as well. Sorry to hear about the Rotted wall, hopefully it is not to expensive to replace.

Ok, I took some more pictures today.

The crew came and cleaned up the yard of all the roofing debrie and closed in the corner of the house to look like the rest of it.

Looks like things are getting closer and it also looks like they are doing a good job too! Hopefully, this will all be behind you soon! Just think if this had not happened you never would have had a clue that you had so much underlying damage going on.

Impressive progress Rick.  Are they giving you any idea when it will be ready to move back in?  Are you going to do some of the inside finish work yourself?

Impressive progress Rick.  Are they giving you any idea when it will be ready to move back in?  Are you going to do some of the inside finish work yourself?

Well I have already signed a contract that they will do everything for me.  The only thing we are going to have to do is get a clean up crew and clean the dust and stuff out of the entire house before we move back in.  Today they mud and tape, then it has to dry.  Next week AFTER Christmas they will insulate and texture.  Then paint.  The week after that carpet goes in and then we will have to clean, move, and then come and clean the rental.  So, probably after the 1st of the year before we get to be in our home.  But, hey.. who's complaining?  Not me.  With good friends like you guys it has made it much easier to be out of the home, and things are coming together to pay for everything.  That is such a stress relief.

This sure has taught me to be ok with change.  My kids are trying to cope with it all, and I think they will be ok.  Having our pets with us and being together is what is important.  Christmas isn't about a physical house anyway, it's about family and faith.  The human being is very adaptive.  :)

My thoughts exactly, as long as the family is safe healthy and together then all else is secondary. Houses get fixed, bank accounts get replenished.

well, more paint goes on today.  What you see above is our room, the boys room is a different color, as Catherine's room is different too.  Amy had a work party on Saturday morning with a bunch of ladies from church and they got the rest of the house cleaned up from the sheetrock mess.... so it looks a lot better now.

Ok, the carpet should be installed this week, and we move in this weekend.  At least I hope so!

Here is what we worked on today.  The bathroom is pretty much finished.  This is what Andrew and I worked on...

Here is what it looked like when we started....  the doors were broken and old, so we decided for a fresh new look, here it is before we did anything...

Then we had to scrape off all of the caulking... and scrub all the gross looking gunk.  Go Andrew!

Here it is now with the metal and doors gone and the new bar put in.

And then.....

and last but not least.  Fun project...

Only one drawback.  I attempted to put a new shower head on the shower and broke the pipe off in the wall.  Oh boy.  Now my friend is coming over to look at it, I may need a plumber, I am so hopeful that it won't cost too much!!  Oh boy.  :(

Didn't it turn out cool looking??  It's way more modern than my wife likes, I am trying to update things!  :)

Looking great still.  I bet you are excited to be moving back in soon.  I'm curious, how are the other homes in your area doing?  Anyone lose their home entirely?  I wonder how that works.  Is it like totaling a car where fixing costs more than it's value?  Or a certain percentage?  I hope that didn't happen for anyone.

In our area only a handful of people are out of their home, but 60 miles or so away there are people that lost everything and are building all new houses.  The insurance covered mostly everything, and if it didn't, FEMA stepped in and helped.  Most people are doing ok. We have had it very easy compared to some that lost their homes due to flooding and mudslides.  Of course there are few stories of tragedy, but mostly people were safe.   That is good.

I am trying to have faith that when I finally turn in reciepts, mileage and all that the insurance will pay me back for a lot of extra stuff.  But if not, I am sure things will work out fine.  Thanks to you guys I already paid my deductible and so many nice people helped us out with other stuff it's pretty cool.

Now it's my turn.  I try and look for people that need help and help them.  It makes life much more fun and rewarding.

Cool stuff.

I get my Internet switched back on Friday to the house, so I will move all my computer stuff that morning.  I'm looking forward to having my old work station and desk back.  And my DISH network!  YAY!

So our journey is complete.  We were out of our house due to the big wind and rain storm the first weekend in December.  45 days at a rental house, and now here we are back at home.  We have a new roof, all of the bedrooms have been remodeled and the water damage has been fixed.  Here are a few pictures of our move today, and now we can rest in our newly remodled home.  YES!
Thank you again my friends for the wonderful outpouring of support during our crisis.  You have all been a tremendous help during our time of stress.  What a blessing your phone calls, cards, emails, and posts have been.  THANK YOU!

We will start out with a cool chalk drawing from an artist that used to come to the youth church we pastored.  Her name is Jewel, she is very talented.  This is an original that I got when I supported her through film school with a monthly little donation. Two years worth of support and she gave me this WAY cool frog chalk drawing.  This is in our bedroom.

Glad to see you finally moved back in Rico! It seems like it took a lot longer than was expected but at least your home is fixed.

Perhaps now would be a good time to consider putting it on the market!  ;)

Thanks!  I hope I didn't bore any of you with it all.  It was an adventure, but all in all and so far a good one!

Looking at all these pictures of your house Rick is making me want to renovate mine (well actually more like wanting to move) Things are looking good

lol -  :D
change can be good (and painful at times).
I'm not ready to give up my green shag carpet and swag lamps, although my AMC Pacer died years ago.

Congratulations on completion of the repairs - with upgrades!

Glad you are back in safe and sound Rick.  I didn't know you had Ethan Phillips (Neelix) helping you move?!  ;)

My Wife and I went to look at a house today. So Rick with all his renovations to his house has inspired me a bit. I was thinking renovations as well, but I am not getting the feeling the place I am in right now will be long term for me.

Jeff, Hope your plans come together and you can make a move to a new house when your ready and on your terms.  :cheers

I'm stuck in a rut, so when the unexpected happens - I'm surprised and a little annoyed at myself at how rattled I get.

With his faith and family, Rick makes it look easy.
Though I'm sure that having your world turned upsde-down is anything but.

My wife and I are not rushing it, so if something comes up that we like, then we move, if not we are good where we are. I live in a townhouse right now, and just does not feel like this will be the place I will be in longer term. House prices where I live have been through the roof the past few years, I have been in my town house around 4 years, and it has already more then doubled in worth. The down side being is so has everything else as well, lately the market has stabilized a lot, as houses were just getting to out of range for regular people. A lot of nice houses sit, as they are to expensive. The house I looked at yesterday was listed in the summer, and is now listed again at 60,000 less, and was relsited in December. There is another offer on it right now, so if we don't get a chance not to concerned as there will be more. At least I have equity built up in my townhouse, that I can move to something else, but I feel bad for the young people starting out, as for a lot of money, they really get nothing. My Townhouse is entry level, and it goes for 250,000 now.

Best of luck Dave, I know ruts are not that great, but they can change as well. What happend to Rick was a bad deal, but in the end, like you said faith, family and friends pulled together. I guess the positive is a nicely renovated home that would never had been done without the storm. So sometimes things workout for the best.

The wife and I are trying to buy but the housing market in Toronto is booming right now. There was some craziness a few months back. A new 80 story condo building is being built right downtown. People lined up for 2 weeks to put down a deposit on units. The day before they opened the sales office, there was a sign outside saying units ranged between 300,000 - 2 million dollars. the day of, they had updated the sign to say 500,000 - 8 million dollars.

They all went.

I was born and raised in the foothills where I still live - a regular hillbilly, but I like to think of myself more as a Hobbit.
When I was a kid houses sold for 35k - 80k. Now that the realestate bubble has burst, I can drive around the northern Sacramento communities and see many houses with dead lawns that are bank repos. Guess it just got to easy too borrow money.
My little foothill town is a "Sacramento bedroom/retirement community". The sellers are still in denial because prices lag behind the rest of the market. A 3 bedroom house with detached garage on a small lot sells for over 500k up here. I'll wait another 12 to 18 months then buy.

I wish the bubble in LA would burst... decent and I mean fixer uppers start at $500,000 in an okay area. And in a good/great part of town you're looking at 1 million + at the very least.

The company I work for is based in Rancho Bernardo, Most folks I know won't or can't transfer down there because the home prices are off the hook!

It is so tough for people who don't have a house to get into one now. I feel for you Kenny, in who has $500,000, and to carry a mortgage that high would suck up all your money. I guess my greatest fear, is buying a house, and then having the value drop to less then what I paid for. It has raised so sharply where I live over the past 10 years, and now we have it a bit of a levelling of time.  I don't think things will crash where I am, but some houses have sat for quite sometime, and had to have large reductions. I guess I consider myself fortunate that I bought a house when I did. At the time my rent went up, and it was cheaper to own a house. Just feel so bad for young people starting out, as it will not be very easy at all for them to get into a house like it was for me.

We have the same fear. We are in a good position in that we don't have a house to get rid of but the thought of making a mistake and getting into a bad investment is crippling.

My wife and I bought our first house 19 years ago for $24,000.  Yeah, it was a HUD house that someone had forclosed on.  Years later we put a $25,000 addition on and then sold it for $65,000.  With our equity as a down payment we bought our house here in Aberdeen for right around 100k.  It's worth $130 now.  It's a three bedroom one bathroom house in a nice part of the area.  We paid for location.  You all should move to Aberdeen, you can get into a nice home for cheap!  :) plus you would have fun neighbors! If you bought a $500 thousand home you would live in a mansion with some property.

I too couldn't see paying rent over and over and getting nothing.  It was cheaper for us to buy a home monthly, and it was an investment too.  We were blessed to get the first loan from my mother in law, who is a great lady.  After I paid her off, I got a loan through WA Mutual.  I remember making the first payment and shaking it was so much for us!  :)  Now it's actually pretty low all things considered.

The housing market here though is most definitley a buyers market.  They just remodeled a beatiful home two doors down.  Anyone want to move?  I'll take pictures!

:)
