I received an email via a text message from Rick Moyer. It seems there are some bad storms out his way. Please read:
Hi Rico
I'm writing from cell phone.
We are having a horrible wind storm. 33,000 people are without power. A huge chunk of our roof blew off and we have several bad leaks with water pouring into the house. Yikes!
Anyway we lost power and may not have it back for days. We are expecting floods and more wind the rest of the day. We had gusts of up toward 90 mph.
If you would could you post this for everyone? It's pretty scary right now and we could use everybody's good thoughts and prayers.
We are ok right now, but our house is damaged and it shows no sign of letting up.
I can get email on my phone.
Love,
Rick M

Of course I told him we would be keeping his whole family in our thoughts. I'm not sure how well he can get email via his phone but feel free to send him a message if you want.
Oh my!!! Yes, please tell him I'll pray for them. I hope they have a safe place to stay in the mean time. :( In cases like this, living 1000's of miles apart really bites—I'd offer my house if we were close enough to make a difference.
Wow.. I hope they are okay.. I just sent him an email. Maybe we should try and set up some sort of "Fix Rick's House" fund. Sounds like there was some major damaged and it's not even over yet. The Treks in Sci fi Family needs to stick together.
I agree Kenny...
Thanks for letting us know Rico, I hope the Moyers come through all right. Houses can be fixed, harder to fix people. Stay safe!
I agree. Maybe some kind of care package or something. Let's toss around some ideas and see what others think.
That is bad news, hopefully Rick and his family pulls through with just the damage to their home. My prayers and thoughts are with him and his family. I will contribute to the fund if it is planned. Just a terrible thing to happen at this time of year.
Same here on the fund, however most likely the Moyer home is properly insured.
Yes, hopefully Rick has a good home insurance policy, and was able to move some of his families treasures to a place safe.

Yeah I'm sure he has insurance for the house..when I suggested the fund it wasn't to repair the house, but for anything else they lost or if they needed to rent a hotel or something. I'll wait to hear more about what there situation is like.

Well his family is safe.. and those are the most valuable family treasures.
Maybe just some type of gift basket of food or something to nibble on at the hotel they must be staying at. Let me see first if I can find out more info from Rick.
Whatever you guys decide, I am in full support.
Wow. His family is now in our thoughts. I had no idea that there was a storm that bad out there. I've heard nothing on the new here.
I emailed him as soon as I saw this. I'll try and support in anyway I can.

It's been crazy weather here the last few days too. Very windy today, but not as bad as at the Moyer's. I got a response and Rick said he has insurance. I suggested maybe a food basket of some kind. When I hear back from him I will let folks know on that idea.
that really sucks to say the least man. Its been awfully windy where I'm at. I don't think there is much you can do for Moyer at this time, lets just hope he'll be alright.
Thanks for letting us know what's up, Rico. My thoughts are with Rick and his family.
Just saw this. Let me know what we as a forum want to do for them and count me in. I'm traveling this week.
Just got home and was surprised by this post.
Hope the Moyers are safe and warm tonight.
I'd like to help with whatever you feel is appropriate Rico.
I'll keep them in our prayers
Oh, goodness!
That's horrible. That happened to us in the storm of 2000.
Yeah, let me know if there is anything I can do!
I'm in...put me down for milk/cookies and comic books. :)

P.S. I got an email from Rick M so that means he can send/recieve emails. But you all know that by now. ;)
I ordered this gift basket this morning to send to the Moyer's. If anyone would like to chip in $5, $10 or whatever you can, feel free to send it to me via Paypal. Use: treksf@gmail.com as the Paypal address to send it to. If I get more than the cost of the basket I will send it on to the Moyer's. I have their address if you want to send them a card or something yourself. I don't want to just post it here for anyone to see but if you want it send me a PM or email and I will send it to you.
Basket I sent:
http://www.hickoryfarms.com/itemdetail.asp?itn=011810&catid=18
Total Cost was: $98.49 with shipping and tax. Should get to them in 3-4 days.
My thoughts are with Rick and his family at this time trying to sort everything out. The Moyers give so much to the podcast I certainly intend to contribute back via donation if I can do it from down here.... and I can - I have paypal'd to Rico $25(USD) for a share in the basket.
All the best to Rick & co.. (and I hope the cats are all safe!!!)
My contribution is on it's way Rico.
Sent mine in Rico.
Yep.. mine sent as well.
Sent earlier in the AM.
Thanks to those that have donated so far. It's nice to see people coming together when needed.
Having issues accessing my bank account online atm so I'll be sending it later tonight when I know how much is actually there.

Sorry to hear about Rick's trouble but glad he has insurance. I submitted a little via PayPal just now Rico.

This is why I love this forum and it's members... Thank you all so much for helping out our favorite geeky pastor.
Nice idea guys, my money is on it's way. My warmest thoughts to you Rick Moyer and to your family. Good luck my friend
Yes, hopefully it will give Rick and his family a bit of comfort well they are getting through these tough times.
Thanks Rico,
Hope the Moyers with dog and kitty cats, are home soon.
Got a new email from Rick Moyer. I let him know about the food basket and donations. Here's what he wrote me:
Hi Rico...
could you post this for me?
First I want to say that you all brought tears to my eyes when I got messages on my phone from the forums.
thank you all for your kind thughts and prayers.
It's like a war zone here. The destruction is incredible. In one part of our county over five hundred trees blew over!
water to our area was restored this morning but power may be many days from now.
I was able to get out on the highway early this morning and journey to a nearby town for propane and some tarps for the house. We are cooking on the bbq now that the storm has let up.
It was like the scene of a bad movie when we got into town with a mile of cars waiting to get gas. Two stations ran out so people were mad and yelling and stuff. I found myself getting grumpy at first and then just counted my blessings. We are safe and no one in my neighborhood was hurt. So upon getting home my wife told me that we probably have thousands of dollars worth of damage to the house. But... We have a small five hundred dollar deductible and Farmers insurance was very good to work with today! They all ready have a water restoration team coming to access the damage in our room, catherine's and the bathroom.
They think everything will be covered so we should be ok.
Then a wonderful team of friends came over spearheded by coastgames from the forums and tacked down the huge tarp on the roof. Yay! No more leaks! That was so nice of them to help me. Once I get internet access I will show you all pictures of everything. I've been taking many pictures that you just won't believe.
During the hardest times at night my faith in God and your wonderful emails and thoughts have truly made a difference. So thanks everyone for everything. It really means a ot to me and my family.
Love
Paypal sent. Still traveling in New York City today, no laptop...
Due to a storm and flood in my town of Tillamook, I am unable to access my bank account and can't risk charging it right now because I can't remember what is in there. I had every intention of getting $$ in their before the flood hit but didn't.
Yes, my family is safe and so is the house, but the flood did do damage to the property and rental house....again. I swear, that is where most of our $$ goes, into flooding. This is the 2nd year in a row we've had a damaging flood and about the 10th time our farm has been damaged in some way other than a very large puddle. But anyway...other than a power outage and a phone line going dead, it wasn't severe in comparison to what we've been hit with.
Sorry I can't help further...:(

Wow how wonderfull to see all the support for Rick.
I was in contact with Rick many times yesterday and was finally able to drive over to his house and help with the roof. Driving was nuts. Amazing at all the trees down and all the other damages out there. Rick was in good spirits the whole time I saw him. About 6 or 7 of his friends and their families were there and we got the tarp put up pretty quickly. The wind was picking up at times and was fun holding on to the tarp. Their roof damage is enough that the entire thing will need replaced. The ceilings and some walls will also have to be repaired. As bad as it sounds they are blessed as it was not worse and they still have an intact house. They are a strong and wonderful family and they will get through this. When we left they had running water again - which we all know is great :)
The last I had heard the electric company was hoping to have 70 percent of the downtown area fixed. It will take many more days I am afraid before it gets to the Moyers.
I will try to keep everyone updated as things occur as I have internet access via my laptop even when there is no power.
Thanks for all your support for Rick and his family.
Another message from Rick Moyer. I sent the extra funds that we have collected so far to his Paypal today. You all have been very generous and kind. Sci-Fi fans are the best! If anymore donations come in I will send them on as well.
This is from Rick M....
You are so kind. I am speechless.
Wow. Thank you.
The day has been pretty wild. We just delivered cases of drinking water to neighbors. The neighborhoods have all come together and are sharing food and heat sources. It's pretty cool to see the nice people out there. Kind of restores my view of humanity. :)
the insurance guy is coming on friday and now we are concerned about our friends in the east county. The rivers are flooding now and are expected to be in horrible flood stages by four am. Crazy! They are evacuating people right now. We aren't in the flood zone so we are ok, but I have friends that are.
the nice thing is that we have cell phone coverage. That is really a miracle. So at least we haven't been cut off from the world.
My address is moyer777@techline.com
I have tried surfing the web on my phone but it is very limited. I'm going through withdrawls!
Bless you Rico and thank you so much. You don't even know how much this means to me.
Love,
Rick
Sorry to hear about Rick's house. Everyone here is very supportive and that really rocks. :metallica: I've sent a little something through Paypal Rico; thank you for doing this
Hey All,
I just spoke with Rick... they just found out that their roof and back half of the house is a total lose. They must move out while it's being repaired/rebuilt. They had no place to move too but fortunately a member of Rick's church has several houses that he is selling and he offered one to Rick and his family for free and for as long as he needs it. And the other good thing is that he is allowing them to bring there pets.
The family is in good spirits. It's pretty bad out there.. alot of devastation and lose. The good thing is that there was no lose of life.
Rick got our gift basket and extra $$ he said he and his wife cried when the found out what we did. He wanted me to thank each and everyone of you for your generosity.
They still don't have electricity and he is going through Treks in Sci Fi withdrawls.
He wanted me to say hi to everyone and send his love.
Thanks for passing on the info Kenny. It's crazy how fast something can happen like this. One minute you are just going along and then mother nature sweeps in.
I'm very proud of how folks came through here for Rick and his family. I know it meant a great deal to them. Thanks again gang.
Thanks for the Update, Glad to hear Ricks spirits are good and that they have found a place to stay well their home is repaired.
Glad the community could help and that Rick and his family are being cared for. Hopefully the extra bit raised will help them pay for their insurance deductible. I know it may not sound like $500.00 is a lot but for some people it can be and every little bit helps.
Kevin
Not to mention the added expenses I'm sure they are incurring due to eating out, miscellaneous damages, lost food, etc. It's a terrible time of year for this to happen as well. I know we helped lift the Moyer's spirits in their time of need and that's the most important part of it all.
Indeed. It's always good to know you have friends.
Thanks to everyone for keeping us updated. I think it is fitting that we each, in our own way, can give a little bit back (which all adds up to something considerable I'm sure!) to a family that has given this podcast so much!! By far the Moyers are 2nd to Rico in terms of the time and effort they go to on behalf of the podcast - I love the "Father and Son" reviews which sometimes morf into the "Father and Daughter" reviews which is so cute (even if someone is a little shy!! :) ) and I do believe even Rick's wife has made a comment or two.. and of course the Gebular greeting messages have been a real hoot!
I have seen many times over the years online forum members come together for one of their own.. and just like Rick and his friends and neighbours are coming together for eachother - the online community is doing roughtly the same.
I think it also reminds us in this sometimes horrible world that goodness does still exist in humanity!
Finally sent it off Rico! I know its late but Tillamook was badly damaged due to a really bad storm. Power was out for 24 hours...etc. I was still at college but just came home last night. I'm glad I could help.

A new message from Rick Moyer. And a picture.
Hi Everyone at Treks in sci fi--
Rico I wanted to call and thank you and everyone on the forums for the
incredible help and encouragement you have been over the last six days. As
many of you know our Grays Harbor area in Washington State was hit by a
devastating Wind Storm that took out most of our Power, water and did severe
damage to many homes.
Our house lost it's roof and got severe water damage, so much so that we
have to move out to another place. The first few days was so scary and was
very difficult because of having no power, but my cell phone worked through
the storm.. go figure! I was able to get a message out to Rico on my Treo
and then I started getting some of the nicest emails and phone calls. I
just want to say thank you to everyone. When you guys sent us the gift
basket and then Rico informed me that you took up a collection for us my
wife and cried and were very thankful for friends like you all. The money
was enough to pay for half our deductible and our insurance has already
taken care of other things that we needed.
People say that the world is an angry place, but honestly, with friends like
you, it restores my faith in people, especially Star Trek geeks like us, we
really do stick together.
THANK YOU, from the bottom of our heart THANK YOU!
We are now safe and warm and our pets are with us in a rental home. It all
worked out just fine and we will be ok. As I speak the contractors are
putting the new roof on and the water damage people are taking the sheetrock
out of the house. Pretty amazing.
Please think good thoughts and say some prayers for the people here, there
are many people in the same prediciment that we are.
We are all just thankful that no one was hurt. Amy, Nathan, Andrew, and
Catherine and I want to say THanks again treks in sci fi, you mean more to
us than we can ever say!
See you all on Wednesday, I get my internet back then!
