Just got back from "Beowulf." Went with my younger son Eric and his friend (both 16). Visually this movie is amazing. I don't think I've ever seen anything quite like it before. The CGI/Live Action capture was beautiful and almost surreal. Very breath taking to watch this movie. The storyline most of you know. I will say this movie is really for only teens and up. Pretty violent and scary in parts. But I really enjoyed it. Great to see it on the big screen. We didn't see the 3-D version. Might do that sometime. If you like fantasy, D&D, WOW, etc. this movie is for you. Some very cool stuff to see. I recommend it!
I saw it on Saturday, and agree the Visuals were nice, but not sure if I can really get used to the Animation and Capture Motion. I think that this movie could have been done with Actors and Sets/Blue Screens, as there was not much that we haven't seen before in similar movies of this type. Glad I went and saw it, and sounds like the 3d version is really something to see, as I just saw the 2d version as well.
"Trilogies are done. CGI is ho-hum."
Get ready for more 3-D in the theaters - Hollywood is giving an improved version a second chance.
This month's issue of "Wired" lists:
Beowulf (Paramount) .......Sword-and-sandals monster movie / Angelina Jolie
Journey 3-D (New Line Cinema) ........Journey to the center of the earth / James Cameron
A Christmas Carol (Disney)........Jim Carrey
Caroline (Universal) .........A children's novel / Dakota Fanning
Monsters vs. Aliens (DreamWorks) ......First of many to come
and...
Avatar (Fox) .......$195 million James Cameron sci-fi blockbuster!
What next? Star Trek in 3-D? Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!
It was easy to see the bits where the 3-D effect would come into play in the movie. And it seemed very much like a gimmick to me. I can remember many years ago seeing an early 3-D film in theaters and found it to be pretty weak. They just send things at you to show off the 3-D effect.
Back to "Beowulf." I have to say I was very impressed by it. There are some things in this movie that are truly awesome to see, I thought. Especially if you love the fantasy genre, like I do. Loved the dragon part especially.
I just got back from the mist and Beowulf and was blown away by both movies. I thought that Beowulf was a kids movie but I went anyway becasue the theater was showing it in 3D. I was in for a really good movie and got poked in the eye by swords, arrows and other things. If you want a good time at the movies, go to one of them.
I agree with Rico that movie, and the other one I saw, is a teen and up movie.
I think this movie is a must see in 3D, I've heard it's awesome and I plan on going next week. Rico, how can you call it a gimmick when you haven't even seen it? :smilie_nono:
I agree that this movie is a must see in 3-D. I got to see it on IMAX 3-D and it was amazing. After I got used to the special glasses over top of my own glasses, the special 3-D effects were definitely more than just a gimmick. Sure, there were sword points and arrows coming at you, but the general sense of depth made the movie feel that much more immersive. It felt like actual 3-D.
OK, I FINALLY went to see this last night. I saw it in 3D and it was AMAZING! I'm sure it's good in 2D, but the depth perception of the 3D was remarkable. One word of advice, sit back a bit from the screen as it can be hard for your eyes to focus on all the images as they are all so sharp and in focus.
I'll have to see if it's still around by me at the IMAX. I liked the movie a lot and would like to catch it in 3D.
I saw it on both the IMAX and a normal screen both in 3D. I didn't think the IMAX helped the movie. Looks about the same as the normal screen.
