McG Is Definite for Terminator 4

http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2007/11/16/mcg-is-definite-for-terminator-4/

Story Submitted by: Adam Sellers (SoSF Contributor)

McG ("We Are Marshall," "Chuck," "Supernatural"), as of last night, has officially signed on to direct the new Terminator 4. Titled "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins ," Warner Bros. recently gave the film a greenlight and is looking for filming to begin sometime in early 2008 for a summer 2009 release. The script, by John Brancato ("The Net") and Michael Ferris ("Primeval"), was locked in this October, well before the writer's strike. Brancato and Ferris also wrote the sceenplay for "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines."

The fourth film is described as being as big in size and scale as the third film in the franchise, yet will be able to come in at a smaller budget since Arnold Swartzenegger isn't attached drawing a huge paycheck. Also not returning are Claire Danes and Nick Stahl, according to joblo.com.

On an interesting side note: the screenwriter, Michael Ferris, recently opened a website that allows visitors to submit scripts for short films. Ferris will help get the scripts to his agents and managers.

Thats cool news...I think. I am not sure how I feel about no Arnold in this one. I am sure I will go see it, as it sounds like they are putting a lot into it. I thought T3 was ok, but no where near T1 and T2, so this one I am not going to set a lot of high expectations for.

Wow; I can't believe that the franchise is still alive and kicking.  Governator or no Governator, I plan on seeing it.

QuoteI thought T3 was ok, but no where near T1 and T2, so this one I am not going to set a lot of high expectations for.

I'm with you on that.  I figure; if I just go in looking for some mindless, sci-fi fun, I won't be disappointed.  Heck; I might even be pleasantly surprised.

I think the major fans will give it a look but the most hardcore fans believe that the second one ended the series.  Everything else is like fan fiction.

If it were me, I would set the timeframe to a few weeks before Kyle goes back in T1.   Behn could reprise his role - with enough makeup.   We'll see about this one.   T3 was a piece of crap - sorry if this offends but the female terminator - who starred in the blockbuster (excuse me while I die laughing) BloodRayne -- was awful.

No, I did not like the movie.  Even Ah-noldt couldn't save it

The only way I can explain what came out after T2 is with Christian Theology.  They met to decided what books were devine inspired and which were not consistant.  In the same way, the video games and movie and comics, etc that came out after would be like the books not included in the bible because they don't apear to go with it.  And I think that Cameron's vision is the only thing that we can really "cannonise" and the rest is worth a look but doesn't feel to me like it goes with Cameron's story.

Bale To Star In Terminator 4?

Ain't It Cool News reported a rumor that Batman Begins star Christian Bale is in line to play a grown John Connor in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the upcoming fourth film in the SF franchise.

The movie is expected to reboot the franchise with a story set in the future, during the all-out war between Skynet and humankind. Warner Brothers plans to release Terminator Salvation in summer 2009.

A screenplay has been completed by John Brancato and Michael Ferris, writers of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.

This news makes me more excited about the 4th movie. With it being set in the future makes Arnold's non involvement less of an issue for me. If they are potentially casting Christian Bale makes me believe they have a good story behind it.

Bale Confirmed For T4

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed a rumor, first reported on Ain't It Cool News, that Batman star Christian Bale is in negotiations to star in Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth installment in the hit SF series.

McG is directing the movie, in which Bale would take on the role of John Connor, previously played by Edward Furlong in Terminator 2: Judgment Day and Nick Stahl in Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines and soon to be played by Thomas Dekker in the Fox broadcast network's upcoming series Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles.

David Campbell Wilson, John Brancato and Michael Ferris wrote the story for Terminator Salvation, which focuses on Connor, now in his 30s, as he leads what is left of the human race against the machines in the war of the future.

Bale is currently filming Warner Brothers' Batman Begins sequel, The Dark Knight.

Looks like they are talking about doing another trilogy...

Producer Moritz Borman on Terminator Salvation
Source: Empire
December 29, 2007

Producer Moritz Borman talked to Empire magazine (via The Sun) about Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, to be directed by McG starting April 15 in Budapest for a summer 2009 release.

Borman says they are keeping the script "under very tight security" because "we have a huge twist at the end, which we're being careful not to reveal. Like with the last 'Terminator' — we kept that under tight wraps so not even the crew got the last six or seven pages.

"I can tell you this much — this is the story everybody has been waiting for," he added. "Namely, we're in the future. The part of it where Arnold's character has not yet been built but is on the drawing board.

"And in the next two episodes we'll get to the point where time-travel is more in the foreground. It's the war against the machines, the start of Skynet taking over the world."

Borman hinted that Californian governor Arnold Schwarzenegger could be part of the two subsequent movies.

"It's convenient that he hasn't been built at this point of the story, as Arnold has more important things to do right now, but that doesn't mean he might not re-appear later in the trilogy," he said.

"He knows the material and is very supportive of what we're doing. There might even be hints of his character in this one."

Borman refused to confirm that Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) is playing John Connor. "Everyone is assuming there is a John Connor and a Terminator in the script. Connor is in there along with another figure, but who is that figure?"

I think the other figure is Conner's father; the guy that gets sent back in time in the first Terminator movie...

Arnold Won't "Be Back!"

Arnold Schwarzenegger will not be returning to the franchise that made him an international cinematic superstar. At least that is the latest word from the associate producer for the next film in the Terminator series.

James Middleton told a crowd of fans and reporters in Los Angeles that as long as Governor Schwarzenegger is tied to his current position as Executive leader of the State of California, there is simply no time in his busy schedule to make room for this current new film. If he gets re-elected, which most political pundits believe will certainly happen, then he will also not be available for the other two films in the next Terminator trilogy.

"He has been approached, and in the early days of our development of T4, one of our producers, Andy Vajna, who's a good friend of his, spoke to him about doing a cameo," Middleton said. "This was even before he was governor. But we know now that [since] he is governor, he's got priorities that are above doing movies."

The fourth film in the series is titled "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" and will take up where the last film, "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" left off.

"It's post-apocalyptic," Middleton said. "It's set after the events of [Terminator 3], where we see the nuclear exchange at the end of the movie, and we show what the world is like after this event, and we show how people try to deal in a post-apocalyptic world. And we introduce a new character, who becomes very important to the resistance and to John Connor, a new hero. It's really about the birth of a new hero," Middleton added.

Middleton also revealed a little more about the more grown-up John Connor. "I would look at him as a character that is introduced and that will grow in the second and third movies of the trilogy," Middleton said.

While it has been rumored that Christian Bale is in negotiations for the role of Connor, no official announcement has come from Middleton or any other studio spokesperson.

Production on the first in the new trilogy of Terminator films was to begin in April of this year, but that could be delayed depending on the length of the current writer's strike. "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" is set for a release sometime in 2009.

Is Josh Brolin the New Terminator?
Source: The Two-One-Three
February 6, 2008

In a new interview with The Two-One-Three, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins director McG hinted that No Country for Old Men star Josh Brolin might play the new Terminator opposite Christian Bale's John Connor.

"We're prepping the picture right now. The script is largely done, whether or not we're able to prep off of it, obviously we want to continue to work on it, punch it up and we're hoping for an expedient finish to the writer's strike. But I've got my fingers crossed that in a week or two it will be over," McG said.

He added that the fourth film will take place "post Judgment day. So there really is no continuation, you know what I mean? Its sort of a different animal, whereas the first two pictures on this thing are Terminators from the future, this picture takes place in 2019."

There's been rumors that John Connor will only be a small part in the film. Not so, says McG. "John Connor's a major player in it - Christian Bale's playing that part."

Asked who his "dream Terminator" would be? McG revealed, "...And there's guys out there like Russell Crowe and Eric Bana, bring a good physicality, they do what they do, but I don't know if they're exactly right at the end of the day. (Smiles) Josh Brolin is a very exciting actor - we'll see."

'Terminator 4' Looking For New Name

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Source: Mania
Mar-11-2008

A fourth Terminator film is still in the works ... it's just that it will have a slightly different name.

In a release about the new film, studio Warner Bros. is now referring to the McG-directed film as "Untitled Terminator Project," which seems to indicate that the studio has dumped the "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins" title that had been used in connection with the production for some time.

It's not clear what precipitated a change in the name, but it doesn't seem to be affecting the plot much, if at all. The film will be the start of a three-installment series that will focus on Christian Bale as the popular character John Connor as well as Sam Worthington as Marcus following the apocalypse that allows the machines to take over.

Bale will be the fourth primary actor to take on the role following Eddie Furlong, Nick Stahl and now Thomas Dekker, who stars in the Fox series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles," which just completed its first season.

The movie, unlike the series, will pick up apparently where 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines" left off, and is written by Michael Ferris and John Brancato.

The film is set for release May 22, 2009, just a couple weeks following the current scheduled premiere of "Star Trek" by Paramount Pictures.

Anton Yelchin is in negotiations to star as post-apocalyptic warrior Kyle Reese (father of John Connor) in director McG's "Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins." Batman's Christian Bale has already been cast as the futuristic, rugged, battle-hard adult John Connor, the man responsible for sending a younger Kyle back in time to become his father. Yelchin will next be seen in the big budget SF film "Star Trek" as Pavel Chekov in May 2009.

Bloodgood Back In T4

Moon Bloodgood (NBC's Journeyman) is in final negotiations for the female lead in McG's Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth movie in the SF franchise, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Bloodgood will star alongside Christian Bale, Sam Worthington and Anton Yelchin in the sequel, which is being produced by Halcyon Co. and set for a Warner Brothers release in the summer of 2009.

Bloodgood will play a no-nonsense and battle-hardened member of the resistance. Principal photography is set to begin May 5.

Bloodgood starred in the short-ilved NBC time-travel series Journeyman and is shooting Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li.

T4 Details Revealed

Warner Brothers announced that Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, the fourth installment in the SF franchise, began production on May 5 in Albuquerque, N.M., and offered new details about the movie's storyline and cast.

McG is directing the movie, which stars Sam Worthington and Christian Bale as an adult John Connor, based on a script by Michael Ferris and John Brancato (Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines).

Warner also offered new details about the film, which is set in post-apocalyptic 2018. Bale's Connor is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators.

But the future that Connor was raised to believe is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

The film also stars Anton Yelchin as Kyle Reese, Charlotte Gainsbourg as Kate Connor, Moon Bloodgood as Blair Williams, Common as Barnes and Jadagrace as Star.

Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins is envisioned as the first film in a new Terminator trilogy and is slated for release on May 22, 2009.

Terminator's T-800 to be Played by...
Source: Clinton News-Record, Ain't It Cool News
July 17, 2008

The Clinton News-Record has revealed that former bodybuilder Roland Kickinger will play the T-800 in Warner Bros. Pictures' Terminator Salvation, coming to theaters on May 22, 2009. Kickinger talked about his role in the film, quotes that should be considered spoilers:

This month, however, Kickinger begins filming what is likely the role of his life to date, as his portion of Terminator Salvation begins to take shape.

"There's a very strong scene in the film where John Connor for the first time meets the Terminator, and he doesn't know if he's a good guy or a bad guy," said Kickinger.

"It's Arnold's character in the first Terminator. That's basically my role, but 20 years before, so it establishes how the Terminator [came] about."

Will The Governator Appear In 'Terminator Salvation?'

By Julie Pyle

Arnold Schwarzenegger is too busy as California's "Governator" to revive his acting career, but his enthusiasm for and contribution to the Terminator franchise is clearly still important.

In fact, the upcoming "Terminator: Salvation" may include a voice cameo of the man who helped make the originals so popular.

Moritz Borman, who produced all three previous Terminator movies, told Wired when asked about the star's involvement: "Schwarzenegger is governing California. He will not be, as a person, in the film."

And it's the "as a person" bit that has the Internet buzzing with fan speculation. Previously, Schwarzenegger had been treated to some early footage of the film, and responded with underwhelming praise.

"They showed me some footage, but I don't have a feel for the movie. I didn't see enough. I wasn't sure who the Terminator was. I don't know if there is one or if he's the star or the hero," he explained. "These are the things that determine the success and how the strong the movie will be. I hope they do well, and I hope it is a huge hit. I do hope it creates a spectacle on the screen. That is what James Cameron created."

However, the Governator has continued to express interest in a cameo, as long as it didn't interfere with his current job. Borman refuses to elaborate at the moment.

"I'm not going to answer the question about what we're trying, or what we want, or what we're toying with," he said. "It's really up to what fits in the film or not. Maybe his voice, or maybe not. It's really not settled."

"Terminator: Salvation" is directed by McG and is headed into post-production.

Just got back from seeing this and really enjoyed.  Cast was good and the effects - WOW!  If you enjoy things blowing up a lot go see this.
The story was ok, but I wanted a bit more than they give us.  Also, I have to say there is no real tie in to the TV series - which is a bit sad actually but understandable.  Oh and has been reported we get a bit of Arnold in it too.  I won't say too much on that.  Overall, a notch up from #3.
Definitely better then 3 and yes, the effects were very "transformerish".  These fx people are getting extremely good at blending real-life/cgi.  I thought Moon Bloodgood (very Bond-like name) was great.  Oh ok, the original terminator was a series 101 - not model 100.  That's what I was thinking of Rick.

I really enjoyed this film. I don't think it can really be compared to the other films though. The other films were all about being on the run and this one was an obvious war film. Once I realized that it was set in the Terminator universe, but a new sort of Terminator film I really loved it.
the trailers spoiled me a little too much, I knew that Marcus was going to be a machine just from them. Otherwise it probably would have been more of a surprise when we learn that. At the end I felt like this film which could have been and in some ways is a sequel and a prequel was really more of a sequel, and it seemed evident from what Connor said at the end with the "there is no fate, but what we make it". Even though the timeline is different in the future then what we might have expected it's all new and can play out however they make it. I have to say I was a little bummed that the TV series wasn't mentioned. I understand why they couldn't work in the shows timeline, but a nod that it could exist would have been nice.
I really enjoyed this Movie as well. I liked the intensity of it. I liked the fellow who played Kyle Reese, I thought he did a great job, and it was nice to see him have a larger role then what he had in Trek.
I undertand it is a different timeline from the TV series, but it would have been nice to have a few nods, like possibly having Derek in the movie, or something like that. I liked the nods to the older movies as well, the obvious one being playing the Guns and Roses song when John was capturing the bike. Also liked the beginning when he stepped on the Terminator Head, reminded me of the Original when it showed the Terminators stepping on the skulls. The way they worked the Image of Arnold into the movie was great as well. I agree with Sheppard, in that I felt a bit spoiled in terms of Marcus, as there was no real surprise based off what we had seen in the previews. I guess one could make the argument, that the way the movie opened, that he was going to be transformed. I am hoping they continue these movies
I loved Terminator Salvation.  Ever since i saw the glimpse of the future in T1, I have been dying to see a movie that takes place in the ruined world with killer robats all around!!!  I did have a few problems with some of the story, but the look of the film more than made up for it!!!
