As I post my 500th topic and post, I think about when I came into the Treks-in-Sci-Fi podcast and forums. It had begun with a small Ipod Nano (which I still have) that I had gotten for Christmas. Since I had a laptop with me when I got it, at the relatives house, I installed Itunes for the first time and began exploring, for the first time, the world of Podcasts. My first podcasts were World of Warcraft Chronicles, Imperial Holonet Radio, The Force-Cast, another couple random podcasts and of course, Treks In Sci-Fi podcast. I initially liked WOWChron.com and IHN Radio, but had issues with the Force cast. When I finally listened to Treks, I'm sorry Rico, I had immediate issues with how you did the podast. :-\ See, having English and Speech drilled into my mind due to a VERY GOOD English teacher, your "I"s and "Uh"s started to get to me. :( In fact, I nearly hit stop due to what I felt was not proper radio broadcasting. Now, I do not want this to seem like critism because you have gotten better since then. ;) But anyway, on with the story!! As I continued to the listen to the podcast, *which incidentially was #95* I started to like it. I eventually got over the "grammer" issue. After a couple more episodes, I started to like what I was hearing. It was after a bit, that I joined as King Linksr. (HA, thought you would hear me real name, eh? Not a chance, wait for Podcast #150). (And those that luckily heard, you post my name and I'll know where you live ;) :old_bash:)
As I was currently starting into the whole universe that is known as World of Warcraft, I also started getting into the universe known as Treks in Sci-Fi. Initially, I did not find the forums that interesting. I was far too much into the other forums known as the World of Warcraft Chronicles. Granted, I never really like forums because they were too big and your opinion meant nothing. However, I liked this one because it is geeky, trekkie, fun, and everyone is very nice. I left WOWchron because I began to feel that it was just too much dislike against me. I really do not know why. But anyway, as I left, I began to take interest in these forums. I became a member of the RPG and created the fictional character known as Isaac Starstriker. Know, there is a back-story to dear old Isaac. I've actually written a short story about Isaac. (Its more of a children's story, but I'm actually thinking of writing a short story, but anyway, back to the real story) Now, as everyone can see, I still had problems about finding my place in the story as well as the forums. It went on and we finally started to really get some good stories going. That was about the time that I became an avid Treks in Sci-Fi forum member.
I'm afraid at the same time, that my Wow guild known as the Hylians also fell apart. It has disbanded and died. I now only talk with a couple ppl from that guild. But we aren't talking about that. ;)
And the rest is written history here. You all know me as King Linksr and Isaac Starstriker, the Royal Shining Knight of the Federation. You don't know what I look like. But you do know that I'm a conservative (not Republican/Democrat) Christian that is currently at Oregon Institute of Technology.
I just want to thank not only Rico for a great Podcast and forums, but I would also like to thank the people on these forums. YOU are the reason I keep coming back here and posting my opinion/observation. It is also because the RPG that I keep coming back. I would also like to say sorry, I've been busy, but hope to get some more posts up soon. So it is all of YOU guys that I salute. :cheers :cheers :cheers. I bow down to all ;)
So as I always do in EVERY post, I'm signing off:

Now why on Earth would we do that? Except for the dig on Rico of course, we wouldn't slam you, it's not our nature... I will say this "people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones." :D ;)
Congrats on your 500th! So glad you're a member of the RPG and the forums. Wouldn't be the same around here without you. ;)

;) Exactly, you all have glass houses, I have a catapult ;) And without me, it just wouldn't be very interesting around here ;)
lol
King Linksr
Yep, it wouldn't be the same with out you King. ;)
I wouldn't recommend using that catapult in your glass house. Your very sharp roof would fall on top of your head and that would hurt really, really bad. :D
Yes, that would hurt a lot......I'm sure my roomate wouldn't appreciate it either.

No problem dude. I do my best with um's, and ah's. But solo casting is a unique thing. I've actually not really ever found another solo cast that has been on for the length I have. They are a rare and a difficult thing to do. Most podcasts seem to be duo's or more. Anyway, no problem on the comments.

Solo casting is very hard.. I have only heard a few including yours Rico that I actually enjoy and don't get bored listening to. That definitely makes your podcast special.
Yea, I'll admit that there are very few solo casts. And those that sometimes have the rare solo ones, just aren't nearly as good.
So keep it up Rico!

Congratulations Kinglinksr!
Was reading your 500th post and had to chuckle about a couple of comments you made.
I went back to show #3 to hear Rico's take on "Serenity", after just now seeing the movie. I was surprised at how somber the show was.
And though it sounds like such a minor offense, I feel your pain regarding enunciation.
Being a graphic artist, I had to cringe when Rico on an earlier show was mispronouncing the word "moire" while describing Spocks workstation gizmo :)
I know that word too well because it's the bane of all printed media!
I'm certainly not the "sharpest tool in the shed" but I do look forward to every show now and enjoy this community that Rico has created.
Congrats King.
I have to say after working in Radio for 12 years and speaking to people every week for a living, Rico does a very good job. I think I like his approach and love that he enjoys what he is speaking on. I used to do a morning show every week day, and talking to people all by yourself is hard thing to do. Rico has done a masterful job at it.
I think doing a weekly podcast takes a lot of guts and each show improves as time goes on.
Just my two cents.
Anyway, congrats King for the big 500. That is really cool. It's nice having you around.
:cheers
As a thread that started out as a - hey congrats, I have 500 posts - this thread has somewhat changed tone. I probably shouldn't say much at this point with regards to my podcasting abilities. Either way it probably will look bad. But I have a hard time not explaining certain things.
First, I am by no means a professional audio/radio person. Everything I do on the podcast, web site, etc. is based on what I have learned in my own free time. And it does take a lot of time to do this. Literally about one day a week, sometimes more.
As far as my ability to speak on the podcast, well there are a few things to consider. I try to do the show casually. Normally I have a few basic notes down of what I want to cover, but that's it. I have listened to other podcasts that I know are scripted and I'm not a big fan of that style for podcasting. I record mainly like I was just talking to a friend. Occasionally I will therefore stumble over a word. I used to spend some time editing around that, rerecording, etc. but I don't really do that much anymore. This is a podcast, not a professional radio show. I'm more focused on the content. I like to think I have a pretty good command of the English language. But mistakes will happen and pauses, and's, um's will slip in. I frankly have heard the pros do worse at times.
I hope I don't come off as being overly sensitive to all of this. Who knows, maybe I am. Probably because I pour a lot of "me" into the show and it's a pretty personal project.
All I can say is I'm just a fan who loves Star Trek and Sci-Fi and just wanted to share some of that with others that might feel the same way.
P.S. I'd more than welcome someone to do a "guest podcast" some week like the Moyer's did when I was in Taiwan once. It might lend some perspective on the whole process. I could certainly use a break on occasion.
Hey Rico.. you shouldn't have to post something like this. Your podcast are great, they have been ever since the beta cast. I for one understand the work that goes into making one of these and that people who do these are normally fans of something and not professional radio host. As was posted earlier it's hard to find a really good solo person podcast and Rico does it every week, sometimes twice a week. He doesn't get paid for this, he does it because he love Star Trek and sci fi and he does it for us, he loyal listeners.
As you may have noticed I have stayed off this thread because I was always told that if you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all so I have kept quiet. But this has gone to far.
King what you said was rude and inconsiderate. Have you done a podcast before? Do you know what kind of time it takes to do one? Rico is a guy who loves Trek so much that he wants to share his love with like minded folks. His podcast is not formal and never has been. When Rico talks it's like he's talking in a room with a group of friends and I have always found that to be very personable and charming.
If you don't like it.. don't listen to it... it's that simple.
Sorry Rico I held it in as long as I could.
King, just be careful how you word things. I don't know that you realize how it's being interpreted—we're reading this thread as sardonic not constructive criticism. :-\
I think we all can agree that his podcasts are great the way they are...otherwise we wouldn't be listening or participating in his forums.
Rico's podcast = kick ass
King 500 posts = kick ass
That is all.
Nothing to see here.
Err, sorry, I guess I should have watched this more closely, I'm just going to delete this last post.....

I hope I haven't stirred things up more than I intended. This isn't that big a thing - really. I don't really plan to change what I do. Except that each weekend I do try to do just a little bit better than the last time. We all hopefully learn and improve over time. But all I will say in closing this out is just grab a microphone and talk for an hour about something you like with nothing in front of you to read off of and no one in front of you to talk to. It's a bit harder than it sounds. ;)
The one 3 minute clip I sent in to the show was infinitely harder to do then I thought it would be. I also had my wife to bounce off of, I couldn't imagine doing it alone.

I really need to learn and shut my mouth or quit typing...either would have done. I'm sorry this got out of hand. Next time, I'll just shut it and not say anything. Which is better than saying anything at all.
I think it is about time we close this topic, Rico you have every right to complain, you do a fabulous job every week and I really don't think king linksr meant to come off with the tone he did.
That being said, I think getting 500 posts is a great milestone, but we must keep in mind when posting that they are open to interpretation and can be misread from time to time, so we must try to take care and vigilance when posting to avoid these uncomfortable situations as much as possible.
Yes, lets close this topic and pretend this discussion never happened or never will again.

Oiu.....this year is just one huge rollercoaster. I have great ups and then terrible downs. I feel like I'm in a worse emotional state than Isaac sometimes. Of course, I'm not crying in some corner...but man, geez. I've bounced around like a ping pong ball...

I know what you mean , it has been a year and a half waiting for surgery on my wrist and sometimes the pain is really bad and othertimes it has left me very depressed, but as the saying goes this too shall pass.
Rico, It made me sad to read this. I'm sorry someone is giving you a hard time. I am very thankful to have your podcast to make my comutes easier.
I recently graduated with a communication degree. And I have to say that your production sounds really good. You sound much more relaxed and enthusiast than when you first started. I know you are a chemist but I think that you would do well as a radio host.
I just can't say it enough, thank you for what you do!
As Stan Lee of Marvel likes to say, 'Nuff sad. No hard feelings here at all, but I will close this topic now. I think enough has been said on all sides. Just one last thing. I'm always open to constructive criticism. But might I suggest a PM or email might work a bit better in the future.
Now - time to move upward and onward.
