Looks like Sony may be winning the battle of the format wars. I am in the process of getting a new plasma and Blu-ray player now so I am excited about this news.

It's not going to be over for a long time - if ever. I still think both formats can coexist. Just keep in mind how many different video games systems there are. And that frankly is a much more complicated thing since the code is changed in some cases quite a bit from system to system. And with Paramount and Dreamworks recently going to HD-DVD only those numbers are going to shift in the coming months.
I agree with Rico. The battle is far from over and it seems that HD DVD players are getting cheaper.
Still it's looking more and more promising for Blu-Ray as each month passes. Tell me why exactly would someone, or company, want t support a medium that has so much less storage capacity and ability to grow as the public need grows? I mean I'm not saying that Blu-Ray is the answer because thee may be another format right now on the horizon about to be introduced but it seems to me that with the substantial extra storage capacity Blu-Ray offers over HD-DVD there really is little choice but to move forward.

I'm not going to get hooked into another one of these circular debates again. But I will say, it is easier and cheaper to make both HD-DVD media and players. So that's two reasons why companies have been doing it. Visually there is no difference between the two formats. Both can produce a stunning picture if given the proper source material and display setup.
I have an HD-DVD player and I will eventually own a Blu-Ray player as well. I see no need to choose sides in this.

Yeah - but like I said I will eventually own both. But you want to know a secret. If you own a good upscaling DVD player and have a nice HDTV, old regular DVD's upscaled look great as well! And I mean really good. Which is great as I own a good number of DVD's already. I won't be replacing much. Only probably Trek, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and maybe a couple of others would I bother to buy again in HD.
Currently I own two HD-DVD's, "300" and "Transformers." I'm only buying new stuff that I really like in HD.
I know what you mean about upscaling DVD players Rico! My Blu-Ray upscales and about everything I play in it looks fine on my HDTV. Especially the newer DVDs. We watched Meet The Robinsons last night on DVD and it was fabulous. However, I liked the movie enough that I will purchase it on Blu-Ray.
Like you I am only going to buy movies I really like on Blu-Ray. Otherwise with the upconvert I am SATISFIED BABY! Yea!
