Title: Saturday cartoon shows
Post by: Rico on September 22, 2007, 05:14:38 AM
Ahh, Saturday mornings in September.  That has always meant - new cartoon shows! :taz
I've always loved cartoons and still watch them.  Some of my favorites over the years I have mentioned on the podcast, but I'll list a few.  The various Spider-Man cartoons, Batman cartoons, Superman, Justice League, X-Men, D&D cartoon, and of course Looney Toons.  This year I'm looking forward to another season of "The Batman" and the "Legion of Super-Heroes."

What are some of your favorites?

This year, I'm looking forward to "The Batman" and "Superman & The L.O.S.H."  The first season of Legion was great, and the changes for this year sound interesting.  I was late to the party with The Batman, but my 4-year-old and I started watching it last year.  It's better than I'd assumed.  The most recent episodes, introducing Bats to the JLA, were very good, and I'm looking forward to all the teamups scheduled for this season.

In the 70s, I loved the Filmation Batman, Shazam & Isis live-action, Lone Ranger and Tarzan.  In the 80s, I was a big fan of Superfriends/Super Powers, The Incredible Hulk, Spider-Man & His Amazing Friends, and pretty much any superhero cartoon.

I never stopped watching cartoons.  In college, I watched X-Men and the great Spidey series of that decade, and, of course, I've been glued to the screen for all the DCU toons from the premiere of Batman in '92 up through the final episodes of JLU.

Now I'm getting to share all of this with my children, and it's great.  Last night, both my girls and I watched The New Adventures of Superman, the cartoon from the 60s.

You mentioned Looney Tunes, Rico.  My dad loved Bugs, so those cartoons, along with the Stooges, were part of most Saturday mornings for me and my sister growing up.

I wish I could watch the Muppet Babies again.  These are some other older cartoons that I liked: X-Men, Batman (early '90s), Spider-Man, TMNT, Bobby's World, Eek the Cat and Dragon Ball Z of course (I didn't have DirecTV back then so a local TV channel aired DBZ Saturday mornings).

A couple of years ago Yugi-Oh! got me hooked. I don't watch it anymore though.  Heck, I don't watch new cartoons any more. . .partly due to satellite ironically.

DBZ  is my favorite cartoon of all time.

When I was young I'd get up before 6 am to watch cartoons.  I knew I got up too early when Richie Rich was on, it started around 5:30 am.

In the late 70s and early 80s, Star Trek was on very early Saturday mornings, like 6:00.  I used to get up early to watch that, while the rest of my family was still in bed.  then I had to wait until the cartoons came on.

I wasn't a fan of Smurfs growing up, and I remember an interminable wait for that show to be over, so I could get to some good cartoons.  (I think, because of its popularity, Smurfs was a block of 60-90 minutes, unlike everything else.)  I'm not slamming the Smurfs; I'd be fine letting my kids watch it, but at the time I just wanted to get to Spidey and Hulk.

Yes, I thought it was the same production company and artists?

I would often fill a bowl of sugar drenched cereal and watch these cartoons with my brother, sister and my dad. We were always disappointed when they were over.

Johnny Quest
Scooby-Doo
Captain Caveman
Super Friends
Bugs Bunny
Smurfs
Alvin and The Chipmunks
The Real Ghostbusters
Beetlejuice
Garfield And Friends

There was this show that promoted reading that would come on around the end of the morning schedule. It wasn't very good. It was only made worse by the fact that it signalled the end of saturday morning cartoons for another week.
