Honestly I really liked the way they integrated Porthos into the show. Every captain should have a pet (and no Picard's fish doesn't count!)
Yes, Spot, Data's cat was nice, and it would have been awesome to have more pets on Star Trek. :)
On the episode, there isn't a lot of times that you see Umbrellas on Star Trek, and so that gave it away.
