Title: Podcast # 136 - Skype call!
Post by: Rico on August 26, 2007, 05:39:55 AM
The # 136 podcast is up folks.  This is our Skype call from yesterday.  Lots of forum folks join in as we discuss some of the summer movies, TV and the RPG.   Thanks again to:  Angela, Jen, Kenny, Jeff, Warren, Rick, John and Tim for joining me on the call.  Was a lot of fun!

I'm enjoying the call! I do have a few clarifications to some of the stuff.

1) in the Transformers movie, there were actually live action Bumblebee models used in the film. I believe they said it was two separate bumblebee models and I am pretty sure that you can see the difference if you know where to look. the "real" bumble bee gets beaten up and one of them is lacking legs. When they did closeups, one (the CGI) looked clean and the other (real) had some battle damage.

2) Stardust was an actual novel, not a trade, but it might have been made into a trade later.

3) Flash Gordon is ... worse than words can express. I enjoy all types of Sci-fi, but there is something serious missing with the show.

The podcast just rocked. It was very informative. I still don't know where I would go for all of the news and info without the podcast.

Thanks for the clarification on Transformers. Yeah when I listened to the podcast I heard myself say it was a graphic novel and thought to myself.. it's not a graphic novel it's an actual novel by Neil Gaiman... oh well... that's  the fun of live recording.

It's a common thing because Neil has done so many graphic novels and trades that if my wife wasn't constantly on his site, I'd think it was a graphic novel too.

Finished listening. Good round table. I just saw Harry Potter on Saturday in IMAX 3D as well. Honestly, the 3D didn't really do it for me. If anything I was distracted becuase I found it hard to focus on what was happening. Aside from that it was a really enjoyable movie.

Also, the overview of the RPG at the end was fun. I've been reading a bit of it and I must say it's really well thought out.

As usual great show.

I thought there were some real mechanicals used in Transformers.  But obviously the vast majority of things were done with CGI.

On the Stardust subject, if you check the Net I think the DC graphic novel came first with illustrations by Vess.  It was a 4 issue prestige format graphic novel first.  A couple years later Neil Gaiman fleshed it out into a novel.
Here's a good reference spot on it for you:

Thanks Andy.  We have a lot of fun doing them I think.  Lots of great discussion on this last call.  Next one will probably around the end of September after the new fall TV shows start.

Yeah - I've gotten a lot of nice feedback.  Even with the large number of people I think everyone did great.

Thought it was great when everyone started quoting Princess Bride.  The writer of that movie, William Goldman, is one of my favorite writers in hollywood and of fiction in general.  He's done some great screenplays and novels, Butch Cassidy & Sundance Kid, Magic, Marathon Man, All the Presidents Men, and many other great things.  I just saw he's currently writing the new Captain Marvel movie, Shazam!  Looking forward to that one.
