Spiderwick Mixes Scares, Laughs
Mark Waters, director of the upcoming fantasy film The Spiderwick Chronicles, told SCI FI Wire that the film will combine scares, fantastical creatures and comedy. Waters talked on video at Comic-Con International in San Diego last month. The movie, based on books written by Holly Black and illustrated by Tony DiTerlizzi, is slated to open Feb. 15, 2008.
Reminds me of Jamanji
Has anyone read this series.. I was thinking of getting the books on CD and listening to them before the first movie comes out. thanks
I may rent this eventually but I must say that I am burnt a bit on the whole fantasy genre of films right now. Not to mention the fact that I hold everything to the standards of the LOTR movies which makes for some disappointing viewing lately.

Spiderwick Film Condenses Books
Mark Waters, who directed the big-screen adaptation of the popular children's book series The Spiderwick Chronicles, told SCI FI Wire that although the film encompasses all five books in the series, the story remains intact.
"By design, the first five books told one full arc of the story," Waters said in an interview. "And because the books are, like, 110 pages long, with very, very big type, all five of those books together are shorter than any Harry Potter book. So it's not like we were biting off too much. We actually bit off exactly the right amount. And now I think what we'll generally do is do every one of their book series as one movie."
Both the books and the film center on the Grace family--twin brothers Simon and Jared (both played by Freddie Highmore), sister Mallory (Sarah Bolger) and mom Helen (Mary-Louise Parker)--who move into a new home and discover that it's surrounded by mythical creatures.
According to Waters, not everything in the books made it into the film. But those elements may eventually become part of future sequels.
"There's certainly some wonderful sequences and incredible stuff that was in the original books that didn't make the cut of the screenplay, but in a way they didn't need to make the cut of the screenplay, because the new screenplay ended up being perfectly streamlined to where it needs to be," Waters said. "However, I would say the good thing is some of the creatures that we didn't delve into, some of the action set pieces we didn't delve into, are still kind of up our sleeve and might pop up again in another incarnation."
Authors Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi are currently working on a new series of books, titled Beyond the Spiderwick Chronicles. The first book, The Nixie's Song, was released last fall. Waters said that he would be interested in coming back for a sequel film based on the second series.
"It's planned as a trilogy," Waters said. "And that new series is going to be really, really exciting as well. Jared Grace's character is involved in it. It's a brand-new family, but he gets called in as, like, the Han Solo fairy badass who knows how to handle these affairs. ... That's an exciting idea for another movie, and then they have ideas for where they want to take the story even after that. So I would certainly be thrilled to jump back into Spiderwick again." Well I just got back from watching this and I have to say it was really good. Moved very quickly, I know it encompassed all six books but things just flew by. The effects were awesome of course. I would have loved to see more the "fantasy" world but the stuff we did see was very cool. I look forward in reading the books and seeing what was cut or condensed. This is a good family fantasy movie.
ohhh, im so there. but right now the family is all sick. 102 fevers and such so i figure i will be coming down with it in a week so i'll be there as soon as we aren't contagoius. . and can get a baby sitter.
Looking forward to seeing this one soon too. Hope the family feels better soon mouseslayer.
