Found this on my web site's hosts info page today. They are going to be upgrading some things and you may see some slowdowns today and in the near future. But the good news is that after these changes things should be better. Here's the technical info from them....
Upgrade from MySQL 4.1 to MySQL 5
In an effort to improve MySQL performance on our hosting platform, we recently upgraded to faster, more powerful MySQL servers. The next step in this process will be to upgrade from MySQL 4.1 to MySQL 5.
WHY UPGRADE TO MYSQL 5?
MySQL 5 better handles the many simultaneous requests our new database servers receive. The upgrade should therefore enable your site to take fuller advantage of the improved hardware we've added in the past couple months. We're expecting that this upgrade to MySQL 5 will help to resolve any intermittent MySQL issues you've been experiencing.
HOW WILL I KNOW WHEN MY SERVER IS BEING UPGRADED?
On Monday, August 13, we will begin the process of upgrading to MySQL 5. We'll be rolling out MySQL 5 on a server-by-server basis, starting with database server mysql12.powweb.com. If your database is hosted on mysql12.powweb.com, we'll notify you of the upgrade via e-mail on Friday, August 10.
Each time we upgrade one of our MySQL servers to version 5, we'll update this notice and e-mail customers whose sites will be affected. There should be approximately 15 minutes during which customer databases will not be accessible--at this time, we'll be copying and upgrading the databases to run using MySQL 5.
IS THERE ANYTHING I NEED TO DO?
When your site's MySQL server is scheduled to be upgraded, if your site relies on a database, we recommend you let your visitors know that they may not be able to access all aspects of your site for a brief period of time that morning. You can also temporarily display a non-database version of your site so that visitors can see parts of your site not affected by the server upgrade.
Please note that code running on MySQL 4.1 will generally continue to run smoothly on MySQL 5; commonly used functionality performs the same, if not better, on MySQL 5 than on 4.1. For more information, visit the MySQL site.
If you find that your code is not performing as you'd expect, please contact us.
We're excited to start running MySQL 5 on our servers, and we hope this change yields great performance improvements across our platform. We appreciate your patience as we continue this upgrade--and please, if you have any questions, let us know.

P.S. The forums and web site for www.treksf.com are all on mysql11.powweb.com
Noticed that this afternoon this website was extreamly slow, and some functions on your main page ie forum could not be accessed. any idea of how long this will last.
Nope - no idea. My host wrote me back but gave me very little info. Hopefully it won't be for too long.
Sorry it's so slow today everyone. I've tried to tweak a few things, but it still seems bad. Hopefully it will improve by tomorrow.
My experience is that it is most likely the Host and not your site Rico. Hopefully it gets resolved soon for you.
Got a new email from Powweb today. At least they admit it's their server now....
Hello Rick,
Thank you for contacting Support.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. We are currently experiencing an issue with our server. This is the reason your Web site is loading slowly. One of our engineers is working on the issue. Your Web site will be working fine, once the issue resolved.
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Sharon Adams

Canned support messages are always fun. Here's hoping their "engineer" will take care of the issue quickly. Still seems better then yesterday though.
It was moving along great last night. Seems to only be slow for me when I check out the forums during the day. Right now it's plugging along pretty slow. I definitely understand if you have to move the site over Rico...though I hope you can preserve the RPG.
One problem I've had in the past is another site on your shared server is crapping out and killing the entire server. Maybe someone isn't doing too well with the SQL upgrade.
Yeah ---- it's like a freeway lately. Some times it's faster than ever and other times it bogs down. Don't worry Jen, the RPG area won't get lost. But right now I'm hopeful once my host gets all the bugs worked out the forum will be fine and stay in the current form.
What was the TNG episode with the blue orbs that infected the Enterprise ?
"Web site is down". "Web is up". "Oh - web site is down again"
That is actually a better response then I ever got. At least they acknowledge there is an issue. Like Billybob476 said, there is probably somebody with some problem on the server after the upgrade.
seems to be ok now, lets see how it is tommorow
