I've had my 360 for 5 months and I have yet to connect to X-Box Live. Today I decided that I needed to download some patches for my system as well as Oblivion, so I bit the bullet and bought an ethernet cable long enough to string down my hall and into our home office where the router resides.
We have two IP Addresses for our two computers. Leaving the Mac connected, I disconnected the PC and hooked up the X-Box. When I test the connection my system says that I'm not connected and the proceeds to suggest that I check the router and the Cable. The router's fine...the cable is new. Do I need to buy a third IP address to make this work? Any advice would be most appreciated. ;)
If you are running through a router the outside world only sees you as one IP address. After you get things connected, power off your router for about a minute and then fire it up again. What type of router do you have? Do you assign internal IP addresses to your computers or do you allow the router to do it dynamically?
Initially it was dynamic. Plug and go... But I think I had to manually enter my computer's IP address. Before we got the second address, we could only use one computer to surf the net. Now that we have two addresses we can surf at the same time.
I also tried to enter my husband's IP address into the X-box set up. It still said it was disconnected. We connected the Ethernet directly to the jack, bypassing the router alltogether. No go. I'll try again later. Thanks for your suggestion Rico. :)
If you are going to run Multiple Computers/game systems, you should consider getting a cable/DSL router from Linksys or Dlink. They are not that expensive, 50 bucks or less for a decent enough one. I hook up my ISP router to my linksys router, and then all my other computers hook to to my linksys. I have one IP from my ISP and I have my PC, My wife's PC, My Test server, My Mac Mini and my X-Box all hooked up, and all can use the internet at the same time.
Another thing that might be blocking you is that your ISP might have the MAC address of your computers registered to the IP address, and the 360 will have a different MAC address, so you might need to add that address to your ISP for that device.

Did you ever fix your connection problem? It seems strange that you need two IP addresses to connect to the net. Rico's and Jedijeff's suggestions should have worked. Actually, you should been able to go online when you plugged in the 360 directly to the modem.
I also have a Linksys wireless router. I have my PC, VOIP phone service and 360 hooked up to the router. I just got my 360 some weeks ago and I spent $100 on a Linksys (wireless ) bridge because I like to keep my 360 in my garage. The bridge works perfectly allowing me to securely connect online.
BTW, X-Box Live is a cool service. I like the Achievements and the X-Box Live Points.

My brother is trying to get me to buy an Xbox Live subscription so that we can play racing games (not my thing but he likes them).

I have a linksys router and I have that wireless reciever on the back of my 360. They both work perfect.
I would suggest picking one of those up.

Wow Jen you and your Husband can't go on the internet in the same house at the same time? I agree with Rico hook the cord (all of them) in the router and if there is a "reset" button that may not work but the power off then power on thingy will work. So how much is box live I am thinking of killing WOW and going live (he-he that sounded so weird)
$50/yr for xbox live gold, or $20 for three months, or $8 for one month. You can pay a bit more in a store and get a package that includes a years worth of xbox live, a headset/mic, some microsoft points and a xbox live arcade game.

Microsoft points are what you buy to purchase things over Xbox live. It's their way of being able to not offer refunds or warranties on anything they sell over their network. You are not spending money on the item, you are spending money on points. Then you trade the points for whatever games or other stuff you want to buy from Xbox live. $5 = 400 points, $10 = 800 points et cetera

No, we can both get on the net at the same time...I have a different I.P. address...It has something to do with our provider. We reset the router...that was one of the first things we did. It's probably the ethernet cable I bought or it could be the Xbox. I haven't had time to check yet. :)
