Title: News Articles
Post by: Captain Jean-Luc Picard on June 27, 2007, 03:19:10 PM
Shouldn't the news articles be in quote boxes with a link?  I ask, because I find myself reading some posts only to realise it was a news article and not something the poster had typed up himself.

I assume this is directed towards me since I post most of the articles to the boards.  I surf a ton of scifi and fantasy website daily and if I find something interesting I post it here.  I don't quite understand your concern with this. You say that "I find myself reading some posts only to realise it was a news article and not something the poster had typed up himself."  Do you have something against news articles? Do you feel that I am cheating by posting news articles. I really don't understand why this bothers you.  Please explain.

Actually, I think I know what he's talking about...for once

In the iPhone thread, Kenny, you posted a new story about the service plan and I initially thought it was from you as opposed to a new story qoute. Capt. J.L.P. can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that is what he means. I just figured you were qoutinbg someone....unless you work for AT&T, which I know you don't.

I see nothing wrong with posting news articles that we may all be interested in reading but CJLP may have a valid point. On most message boards, which I have been associated with, they require you to not only use quotes when posting news from outside sources, but also to provide a link back to the original article. It's just common message board etiquette.

However, I would like to thank you Kenny for all the cool stuff you turn us on to. Many of the articles you post provide information I was not aware of.

It's not directed at you, but you did inspire the discussion.  I have nothing against you posting your news articles.  I'm not bothered in the least.  I just wasn't sure if we (as a community) should be using quote code and providing a link when posting a news article.  As Kevin mentioned, most other message boards require this.

I'm just looking for clarity, that's all. :)

I tend to post things in bold when quoting from an outside source.  I also try to post the link back to the original story location.  May not always happen, but that's what I try to do most of the time.

Seems like there's no specific rule for how to post a news article.  Thanks for clearing this up guys. 8)
