Does anyone here like the Alien movies? There are five with a sixth movie coming out this December. The original movie is fantastically original and intense. The sequel is more of an action movie. The third movie is depressing, but it does bring the saga to an end. The fourth movie resurrected the series and is nicely titled Resurrection. For the fifth movie, the studio decided to do a crossover movie featuring Aliens and Predators since the studio owns the rights to both film series. Sigourney Weaver declined to sign on as she found the crossover concept to be silly. This lead to the movie being set in the present instead of the future. The movie comes to a solid ending, but there's a nice scene just before the credits that leaves the door ajar for a sequel which is currently in production for a December release. For those who haven't seen all of the movies, here's a list:
Alien
Aliens
Alien 3
Alien Resurrection
Alien vs. Predator
The fifth movie is a prequel, but I recommend saving it for last. Watching it first will spoil a lot of revelations in the first two movies.
The only one of these films I cared for was the first one. I think it is one of the finest examples of a horror film ever made. I have not seen Alien vs Predator and have no desire to. The other films were fun but really not my cup of tea. I'm really not into horror that much unless it's classic horror like the Wolfman, Dracula, Frankenstein etc. I prefer straight sci-fi.

Indeed, that first film is by far one of the scariest movies ever! :o I can see how you wouldn't like Alien 3 & 4, but why not Aliens? Most people who like the original movie seem to love the sequel. I'm surprised you didn't like it, so I'm quite interested as to why. ??? I wouldn't recommend Alien vs. Predator since you don't like the sequels. It's in the style of Alien 2 & 4.
I'm not really into horror either unless it's a monster movie which I would classify Alien as. As for prefering straight science-fiction, I agree. However, I never really thought of the Alien movies as being science-fiction. There are science-fiction concepts like space ships, aliens, colonizing other worlds, and so forth. However, the focus is on surviving the alien creatures, so I would classify the movies as horror.

I definitely agree the 3rd one was depressing.
The first was a horror film which I found kind of boring.
The second was a great action flick and the best of the lot. The second was worth putting up with the first. But the 3rd really pissed me off. If I watch the 2nd one now it's like, "Who cares, they're all going to get killed in the next flick." I try to not think about the 3rd one.
These are what I regard as marginal sci-fi.

I guess you don't like slow movies? I don't mind a slow movie so long as it builds up to a great ending.
Alien did just that, for me at least. I agree,
Aliens is the best in the series.

Why let the 3rd movie ruin the 2nd movie? That's stupid. If you don't like the 3rd movie, ignore it, and just enjoy the first two movies. :)

That's because they are horror movies with a science-fiction setting, they're not ment to be hard sci-fi flicks.
ALIEN was a masterpiece. I can vividly remember when it was released in theaters. I was only 10 and couldn't go see an R rated film, but Heavy Metal comics had a comic adaptation and there was a movie pic in pictures and I was enthralled by the look of the movie. When it came out on Betamax later that year and I finally saw it, I was already an expert on the strory. I must have watched it dozens of times.
When ALIENS came out, I was in high school and went to see it with my Dad. We loved it, it's one of the most fun action films ever for me. ALIEN 3 was really interesting. Slow, depressing, moody. I loved some of the actors and enjoyed their performances and though the dog alien conceot was neat. Not a great movie, but it not bad, just wierd.
The rest have sucked so badly I feel embarassed for the franchise.
Loved the first two very much. After that it kind of went downhill. I thought the 3rd movie had some very interesting things but a lot of wasted potential. I'd love to see a return to the glory times of the first films for this series. Like how about a visit to the Alien home world?

oooooo, that would be cool. I wonder what it looks like? All slimey and eerie.....
Yes, and could we please have an Alien film that DOESN'T have Bishop in it?!!!
OK, I have to admit something.
I really enjoyed Alien vs. Predator.
Let me explain.
Many of you know that I am a pretty big stickler when it comes to language and sex in a movie- I tend to not watch stuff that has a lot of "f bombs" in it and I have made a commitment to not watch stuff with nudity and junk in it. It's a personal conviction. So with a lot of the science fiction movies, there isn't a lot of skin in them and if there is, I wait for them to be edited for TV and then watch them. But I got a cool little device called "Curse Free" DVD player. And it uses the closed caption system to remove the cussing and stuff in the movie. It works for me, and so, my sons and I rented Alien vs. Predator. Besides the gore, which was crazy, I kind of liked it. It was predictable but a bit campy. The sets were huge and the effects I thought were kind of cool. I'm not sure why I enjoyed it so much, but it was kind of cool.
:)
I am also the one that really enjoyed the first season of TNG, and I liked Buck Rogers in the 25th century, in fact I just orderd the whole series on DVD for $25. WOO HOO! Should be here today!
Alien was good.. I was young when it first came out and it was slow.. a bit to slow for me. But then Aliens came out and that was awesome.. by far my favorite of all of them. Aliens 3 was a disappointment, like it was said here, they go through the trouble of saving Hicks and Newt and in the first few minutes of the third film they are dead, I just didn't see the point. I enjoyed Alien 4, I think it was trying to go the Aliens route with alot of action but didn't quite reach it. And A vs P was a fun movie.. simply story and cool effects.
I know they are making another A vs P II but I thought the fifth Alien movie is just in the rumor stage.
PS... Moyer, I too really enjoyed TNG season one and Buck Rogers... so you are not alone on that. :)
My problem with Alien 4 was I didn't like the Ripley story line, I really disliked the little mercenary band, they were so contrived, and the scientists were jst wierd. On top of that, this was the movie they really ruined the alien's themselves. Nothing was creepier than the original ALIEN. The one's in ALIENS needed to be fast and slick, so that was ok, but here they are they actually growl and act almost like people. Big thumbs down for me.

Chill dude, he means a 5th ALIEN film, not AVP, we consider them 2 different franchises.
Thanks Bryan... yes there is an Alien franchise (which they made four movies), there is a Predator franchise (which they made two movies) and then they combined the two and made an Alien Vs Predator franchise.. three different entities.

Chill? I'm not angry.

AVP is an
Alien movie, so how can they be two different franchises?

I just don't see AVP as being a separate entity when it is clearly in the same continuity as
Alien and
Predator. As far as I am concerned, there are only two series: five
Alien movies and three
Predator movies with AVP serving as
Alien 5 and
Predator 3. I respect your opinion that AVP is a separate movie, I just disagree with it.
I repspect your opinion as well CJLP but even the Entertainment Industry consider them three different franchise. I pulled this from an Alien Vs. Predator forums site.
Alien 5 is still in the "rumoured" phase and what with AvP2 coming out in 2007, we won't see Alien 5 for a good few years if at all. The three main people who will no doubt be involved in Alien 5, Signourney Weaver, Ridley Scott and James Cameron have all said they want to do Alien 5. The problem is that Fox doesn't want to do it and are too busy with the AvP franchise.
edit.. got this with Wiki
Rumored sequels
It has been rumored for years that there will be an Alien 5. James Cameron, the maker of Aliens, started work on a story for Alien 5, but when he heard of Aliens vs. Predator, he thought that the crossover would "kill the validity of the franchise" and stopped work on his script.[1] As of 2007 there are no plans for a 5th Alien film.
I certainly agree with Cameron that AVP has damaged the ALIEN franchise and wish they could go back to those first 2 films and move the story either forward or better yet, backward!
The studio is welcome to consider them separate, but my reasoning is this... Alien vs. Predator features the Aliens throughout the movie and Charles "Bishop" Weyland (co-founder of Weyland-Yutani) as a main character. As far as I am concerned, it is an Alien movie. Until there is a fifth Alien movie featuring the Aliens exclusively, I'll be continue to see AVP as Alien 5. :)
Will just agree to disagree... :)
Assuming there is a new Alien movie that doesn't feature Predators, do you think it'll pick up where Resurrection left off with Sigourney Weaver returning as the Ripley clone? I've heard that before AVP came along, Alien 5 was going to be made by James Cameron and Ridley Scott with the return of Sigourney Weaver as "Ellen Ripley." I also read that it might have ignored 3 & 4 and be a sequel to Aliens. Is there any truth to this?
Like I said above, my hope would be to either go back and restart the series following ALIENS or due a prequel but without Sigourney. I'd prefer the former. I don't foresee Ridley Scott working with James Cameron, it wil be one or the other. If Ridley were to get the deal, he should pick up where ALIEN left off and show Ripley somehow getting into trouble again. :)

I just caught the last 30min of AVP on TV last night and was reminded what a hulking, steaming pile of poo that movie is! The script is terrible, the actors wooden, the suspense non-existant, and the effect are fair. They ruined BOTH franchises in one fell swoop, impressive!
Bryan - that full size alien is freaking awesome looking!
I do wish we could see some more individual alien or predator movies sometime. Bring on the alien home world!

I thought the last half hour was great. :biggrin The underlined, bold comment was unecessary... I just ate. :ohmy

I will agree, the acting is kind'a poor. There were only five or so decent actors in the movie. :blink As for the script... it was entertaning. The suspence was fantastic aside from a few predictible moments. The special effects were fantastic! The ending of the movie reminded me of the ending of
The X Files with Mulder and Scully in Antarctica. Great stuff.

I disagree.
Alien vs. Predator may have some bad acting and dialogue, but it's otherwise a good crossover movie. :)
