Captain America Lives On the Big Screen
From source: SciFi.com
He may be dead in the comic books, but he lives on the big-screen.
Kevin Feige, president of production for Marvel Studios and producer of the upcoming Iron Man movie, revealed that the company’s next independently financed project will be a version of Captain America , which would mix a period story with a modern-day one.
“We’ll have to play with Captain America as being a patriotic propoganda machine on one hand but also being a very human Steve Rogers, … [an] interesting, fascinating hero in his own right,†Feige told reporters on the set of Iron Man, which is in production in Playa Vista, Calif.
Is the script they’re developing a period piece? “Right now what we’re developing would be about half and half,†Feige said.
Feige said that Captain America will aim for a PG-13 rating, like Iron Man. The comic studio has brought on writer David Self (Road to Perdition) to draft a screenplay. A director will be announced soon, Feige said. Production is expected to begin in a year.
Marvel, meanwhile, is gearing up production on The Incredible Hulk, which stars Edward Norton and is expected to commence principal photography on or around July 9, about the same time that Iron Man, starring Robert Downey Jr., wraps.
Marvel is also moving ahead on other productions, Feige said. Among them: Sub-Mariner, on which Jonathan Mostow is doing a rewrite of Self’s script; Punisher 2, for which the studio would like to announce a director and actor soon; Thor, for which Mark Protosevich (The Cell) is drafting a script; and Wolverine, which will again star Hugh Jackman and will be released before the other X-Men spinoff, Magneto, which David S. Goyer will direct.
I'll tell you, Marvel is going to make a movie about Peter Parker's Aunt May before too much more time goes by. Hehe!
Cap does deserve an awesome movie, but sometimes I think all they see is the dollars from Spidey, F4, etc. and want to churn everything out into movie form.
LOS ANGELES, Calif. --
Hugh Weaving is in talks to terrorize "Captain America," according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.
The actor, who previously showcased his evildoer chops as Agent Smith in "The Matrix" franchise, is reportedly in negotiations for the role of the Red Skull – a Nazi agent who first appeared in "Captain America Comics" No. 1 back in 1941.
Like Captain America's Steve Rogers, the World War II character was put into suspended animation and revived in modern day during Marvel's 1960s comics.
While its villain may be close to final casting, the Joe Johnston-directed film has yet to announce who will play its titular hero – a character that, should the films follow their comic book source material, will go on to lead 2012's "The Avengers."
Fox411 previously reported that "The Office" funnyman John Krasinski had "very likely" locked up the role, but The Hollywood Reporter noted earlier this week that Krasinski, as well as past contenders Michael Cassidy and Chace Crawford, were no longer in contention.
The trade paper reported that Wilson Bethel ("Generation Kill"), Mike Vogel ("Cloverfield"), Chris Evans ("Safety Point") and Garret Hedlund ("Tron Legacy") were among the actors still under consideration for the role.
In February, Johnston told Sci Fi Wire that "we'll have ourselves a Captain America" within several weeks, but no such decision has yet been made public.
I don't know what it is about Hugo but after Matrix, LOTR and V, I would see just about any movie with him. Hope he gets the part.
Don't know if it's been mentioned on another thread, but Iron Man, Captain America, and several other Marvel movies currently in the works (Thor, Ant-Man) are part of a plan: Marvel intends to release an Avengers movie in the near future. These films are building up to it, with Nick Fury being the thread that ties them all together.

Caaaaptain America... governments should be afraid of their people. I would like to see a Captain America movie, I always liked the idea of it
There was one made back in the 80's - not bad.
I heard the Avengers movie is going for a 2012 release! If they get all the same actors from Iron Man, The Hulk, Thor, Captain America, and the lot, it will be epic.
Here's some info on the upcoming movie along with some other interesting stuff.

Chris Evans Offered Captain America Role
March 20, 2010 by Sam Sloan || Category: Film News
According to a report in The Hollywood Reporter "Fantastic Four" star Chris Evans is now director Joe Johnston's ("The Wolfman") first choice for the lead in "The First Avenger: Captain America".
It is being stated by THR that Marvel Studios has already given Evans an offer to play Steve Rogers, a.k.a. Captain America, but no word yet from Evans or his representatives if he will be going for it.
The hesitation on Evans' part is understandable since he is currently in production with "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World" and an upcoming romantic comedy project with actress Anna Faris titled "What's Your Number" which is to occur around the same time as the shooting for Captain America. One last thing that could cause a scheduling problem for the actor is his need to sign an exclusive with Marvel that would require him to make cameos in such future Marvel projects such as "Nick Fury," "Thor" and "The Avengers," as well as any possible future "Iron Man" sequels after this second film with Robert Downey Jr.
All these scheduling details would need to be ironed out before Evans can give a definitive yes to Captain America.

So he played Johnny Storm and now Cap? Why?? Are there no other actors out there in Hollywood? Same thing with Ryan Reynolds playing two comic book characters now.
Yeah does this mean they are killing fantastic 4 ( I mean the franchise movie wise ) off. Boo.

Yeah he's pretty much the same character that was in the comics. He even had one for his team for a while. they were the Nightstakers and the midnight sons.
Looks like the costume has been leaked to AICN..

Yeah - that's the first thing I noticed too. I also always liked the sort of "scale-look" to his uniform and it's hard to tell if they will keep that or not.

It starts of in wwII. In some versions of that uniform, he has the standard helmet, but it gets upgraded later to the wings and scalemail.
I think the uniform seems to be modeled on the version of Captian America seen in the Ultimates universe.
Here's an on set pic of the Cap costume on a stunt double. Looks pretty good to me. Keep in mind this is the WWII era of the film I think.
Looks pretty good to me :D
Looks pretty cool. Faithful to the comic look without being overstated.
As I mentioned on the podcast yesterday, here are some of the pics from the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly with the article on the Cap movie. Looking good!
This is looking good!
I was going to mention that Cap didn't get the round adamantium shield until after he was 'thawed' so he didn't have it in WWII and his original shield is seen in these recent pictures but it is a minor detail.
Can't wait for this!
I think they are "tweaking" the shield origins a bit. You will see both shields in the movie.

Actually, Cap was given the Adamantium/vibranium shield by FDR and was frozen with it. It first showed up in about 1941.

I'm absolutely positive. Cap was frozen with the round shield on his back and it was made of the alloy then. It's been around since he got rid of the other shield.
Here's my confusion from Wikipedia:
Rogers' indestructible shield was long referred to, even in continuity, as being composed of an adamantium steel-vibranium alloy. This contradicted earlier established continuity, as adamantium steel is only developed after Rogers is revived from suspended animation, during MacLain's later, unsuccessful experiments to try and duplicate the material of the shield. Adamantium steel makes its first appearance in Marvel Comics in Avengers Vol. 1 #66, July 1969.
I had always thought he was given a new shield later on with the adamantium alloy. And since this doesn't show up until 1969, that was my confusion. In any case, it doesn't matter a whole lot.

Yeah, I remember that part and from my reading I always took it that adamantium to being secondary adamantium. Which is silly on it's own. You have Cap's unbreakable shield being made of an alloy of adamantium and vibranium, but adamantium was already unbreakable so it wasn't anything special to have something else unbreakable.
There are a bunch of adamantiums out there some are stronger than others.
After I did some research on the shield, I realized that the vibranium in the mix sort of absorbs the mighty blows he gets hit with. He doesn't have Wolvie's unbreakable bones and when the heavy hitters like Thor and hulk are nailing the shield, arms should have been broken or something. That key little bit is what makes the shield really special. Kind of like when thor dented the shield and didn't turn Cap into a soft pink paste.
Oops you're right about the shield. I guess my confusion came from the retconning of it's history over the years.
Another on set pic I found. Looks good.
Day for comic book movie pics it seems. Here's a new pic of Cap!
Couple of hires. pics out now. I like the costume.

Not being a comic book fan, I have to say I am getting superhero movie release fatigue at this point.
Why doesn't it say Captain America! I know who it is but not everybody does. I do like the poster though. Maybe it will be one of those mini posters you can get at the theater sometimes when a movie opens. I have gotten some really cool ones like Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, A-Team, Indiana Jones, Kingdom.., and even Fantastic 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer!! I had them mounted on a black board and laminated at work. They look awesome!
Love this preview. Looks like they've done a great job of making him skinny and then super soldier man!

Nice, newer pic of Chris Evans as Cap. Looks spot on!
I'm really digging the look of the costume. Iconic, but not corny.
This has the potential to be the greatest Marvel hero flick of all time. :)
I really like the costume. Great pic. And It's neat how his shield is dinged up from bullets probably. But I thought his shield was indestructible?? I will have to go do some research.

Great trailer! What I really like here is they look to be really getting into what being Captain America really means. It's his heart, courage, and leadership that make him a true hero. I'm liking this a whole lot!

I suspect they got a really skinny guy and CGId his face onto him for those scenes.
Yeah thats what i was thinking, or they had someone who looked very much like him.
Looks freaking INCREDIBLE.
Has anyone here read The Ultimates? A few lines in the trailer lead me to think that the Ultimates version of Cap's origin might come into play here.
The lines I'm talking about are the "The enemy is not what you think" and "(we're) The first of many." Perhaps we'll see some alien influence supporting the Nazis? :)
I was skeptical about this one at first, but it does look very original. I love that it's set in the 1940's. I though being set in the early '60's would be problematic for X-Men but was wrong, they really pulled that off and this looks even cooler!
Bryan, you always need to keep in mind these comics started decades ago. The comics during those eras dealt with the issues of the day, wars, and so on. So this makes a lot of sense. Especially for Cap due to his origins.

I figured that, I'm just pleased that the producers felt comfortable enough with the strength of the original source material to set in period as opposed to try and force it into a more modern sensability.
I think a lot of that is because this movie and to a lesser degree, "X-Men: First Class" were produced by Marvel. And they know very well how strong the source material is on these franchises.
In college, we had a physics professor with a heavy accent. Whenever he said omega, it sounded like "oh my god" so for this movie as an homage to my professor....

Nice composition.
The movie was awesome! Definitely one of the best of the summer so far. And you will want to stay after the credits.
Yes, the treat after the credits was delectable. This was a great super-hero movie, with a great tone that evokes some Raiders of the Lost Ark feelings. I love that they acknowledged the fact that Cap in theory is cheesy with the USO stuff, and that's the trick if you have something as potentially dorky as a guy named "Captain America". Couldn't have had a better intro to The Avengers next year, well done Joe Johnston and Marvel.
This movie was really great! Definitely did their homework and Chris Evans was just perfect as Cap. He was sincere, honest, and just wanted to serve his country. Great job with the origin and just everything. A few things were changed, but I think it all worked very well. Can't say enough about how great this movie is. Everyone on the forum should definitely not miss this one in theaters!
Here's a display of Cap stuff at Comic Con.
One if my favourite Marvel characters and I just can't wait to see this!

Wed. Aug 3 - 1pm
These times are Eastern time zone. Check your listings for your local times.
That costume is from the Avengers movie, it's a slightly different look than the 40's Cap costume. If you wait after the credits in Cap, (as is now standard practice for a Marvel movie) you get a nice sneak peak at next next year's fun.
Andrew and I wen t to see the movie today. WOW, just great. Really great, one of the best movies of the Summer. VERY reccomended.
Thanks for the heads-up on the "Behind the Shield" show. I found that it is on tonight on Reelz at 9:30 CDT (at least it is on AT&T UVerse).
I watched the Behind the Shileld show, it was great.
Cap made almost $66 million over the weekend coming in at number 1! Harry Potter was next with $48 million. Looks like Cap is a really big hit. And it deserves to be that. I enjoyed it the most out of all the comic book films this summer.

Captain America is my favorite movie of the summer, period. There are still a couple more to go but I doubt I'll enjoy them more than I did Cap. They didn't even put it on the stadium seats side of our theater because they had potter on 3 and including a 3d and then it shared the other 3d with Cap. So I saw it in what we call the old side of the theater. Even though it was a newer theater just not stadium seats. Our place had six and they added on 5 more with stadium seating and better screens and sound a few years ago. 3d was just added this year.
And your welcome on the heads up. I thought it was a cool show and knew alot of you guys would enjoy it.
Saw this tonight and LOVED IT. Once again, a terrific rendition of
another character ive loved as long as I can remember reading comics. Such a great time At the movies this summer!
We get it on Friday according to the side of a bus I saw on the way in this morning. Not sure I'll get to see it since we're off to France in a week and I've got to fit HP in yet.
Me and Kell are off to see it Friday morning, alas we have to see it in 3D as thats the only time we can go and see it.
I saw it in 3D last night and thought it was a lot of fun. Well acted and a good story. Very much enjoyed the period setting. And the 3D was VERY good, sublte and really made the visuals pop. I still think X-Men was better but this was a solid B.
Well just come back from watching the film and thought it was brilliant. I watched it in 3D and the only bits I enjoyed were the end credits. Sorry Bry but it just seemed out if focus with the rendering and it took some adjusting.
Now I would love to see another CA film set in the war, a great group of supporting actors in his team. I really hope they do that, not sure how but he did many missions in this film who's to say they didn't do hidden missions
Chris Evans was superb and you have to love Tommy Lee Jones. Hugo Weaving, just awesome.
Actually the 3D bits at the beginning with the Red Skull and his propaganda did work.
Now to take some tablets and get rid of this 3D induced migraine ;)
I agree Meds - Chris Evans and Tommy Lee rocked this movie. I liked all the other actors too. Nice to see some lesser known faces do well in a big movie like this.
Come now, Meds, you know you were digging the 3D... ;) What was great about the 3D was it was subtle with the exception of a few over the top money shots during the action sequences. Another thing I did appreciate with this movie was it's running time. It wasn't nearly as overwhelmingly fatiguing self indulgent like "Transformers" was
Subtle 3-D?? Isn't that an oxymoron? :)

Nope! It's depth instead of "jump out at you". I think some people still have the idea that 3D is jump out at you where as the new 3D is more " you are looking through a magic window."
I think good 3D does the magic window very well and give the occasional burst from the screen, where as bad 3D relies more on the jump out at you while ignoring the depth.
Yeah, I really felt it made the films visuals, even in the more quiet scenes more dynamic and interesting.
Lol with 3D I shook my head with annoyance at the gun pointing scene when she shot at the car, I had that "oh look a scene wrote for 3D" moment. It did look off as well ( to me of course everyone is different)
Bry so agree with you on the running time, absolutely perfect time, nice and tight as well. Great to see Richard Armitage in it as well.
I don't wish to knock 3D again but (and again I can only comment on our cinema) but in the first screening of the day which was ours we had to see it in 3D as the 2D ones were on a bit later but there were 14 people including me and kell in the cinema. We left kell mentioned how more people were buying the 2D tickets. Now he goes to this cinema more than me & many many times this is the case. This could be because of the price of the ticket £8.10 instead of £5.50, or because people are not too keen. Who knows.
What I will say was that I was more impressed with the 3D on the titles and animation so I think I'd like to see a cartoon 3D movie.
I saw this yesterday in 2D, i have to admit i really enjoyed it Chris and Tommy Nailed it,the female lead was hot (and English) and Hugo was his usual brilliant self. i also liked the easter egg at the end about the Avengers movie looks great.
2d was just fine for me it did not in anyway affect my enjoyment, but did save me some money as cowboys is this week.
I totally say go watch this film.
FINALLY got a chance to see "Captain America". The most fun I've had in at a movie in a long time (even with my girlfriend crunching popcorn in my ear)!
Great casting, great story, great effects...a wonderful setup for next year's "Avengers" movie. I have to go see this one again!
This great movie is heading to Blu-Ray and will be out on October 25th with several deleted scenes too.

October 25th!!!! I will be getting this one!!!!!
Finally got this on bluray and watched it.. totally LOVED it!!!
I thought this movie was fun. Above average for comic book fare but parts of it were pretty corny. I'm sure that was intended but those scenes were not appreciated by younger audiences who don't understand the campy nature of Captain America. The cover calling it "The Best Superhero Movie Ever" is laughable but what can you expect from Hollywood?
Kevin
The movie has made about $370 million so far. I'm thinking the "younger" audience enjoyed it just fine - as I did. ;)
Most of the people employed at Sam' are college age here and I have yet to talk to one that actually liked it. I'm always trying to defend it. Dollar income does not always equate to a film being liked. That' pretty presumtios.
"Dollar income does not always equate to a film being liked." What??? So, a movie makes almost $400 million and you don't think anyone liked it? I think many forum members here enjoyed this movie quite a bit. In fact, I don't recall anyone here not liking it. I also have two college age boys and they liked it. I also have read comics a very long time and in my view they really nailed Steve Rogers character. He is supposed to be corny and square - that's the era he grew up in and the type of character he is. So, there is nothing presumptuous about my comments. I think I have a pretty good handle on what films and TV people enjoy. I do a fair amount of research on this for the podcast. I'm certainly not saying everyone enjoyed it, I'm just saying a great deal of people did enjoy it - including me. In fact it was one of my favorite films of the summer. I could certainly see your comments Kevin if the movie had not done well at the box office, but that is far from the case here. So much so that we have "The Avengers" with Cap leading the team next summer and at least two more Captain America films on the way. Sounds pretty successful to me.

Oh Rico you beat me to commenting.. I thought the same thing.. big box office = people hated the film ???
Hee hee boys, boys, boys.
I really loved the origin part of the story but thought the Red Skull and mystical super weapon parts were kind of dumb. I'd say about 70% of the movie was great but the major conflict was not. I also really enjoyed the very end of the film. Overall I was completely satisfied with the movie but kind of agree that I wouldn't call it the best superhero movie ever...or even close really.
Edit to add: I've never been a big Cap fan either, and still loved the movie, so that's really saying something too
Somehow, I believe that Cap's old school attitude will make for some interesting dynamics within the Avengers team.
I preferred the first half of the movie to the second half also.
I'm a huge Cap fan, read the comics for years and I agree they got him spot on. Can't wait to see how they handle the Avengers. Ever since Marvel took back control of their own movies they haven't put a foot wrong IMHO so I have high hopes.
My favorite of the Summer. And it is on top of my Christmas wish list! I think my wife already got it for me so I believe it's in the house somewhere. I wonder if I could watch it and put it back without her knowing it. I do have a shrink wrap machine at work so...???
I loved the film and i would have liked to have seen more set in the 1940's. There is nothing stopping them doing more war set films as they can be missing missions etc.
I just saw the movie on Friday and liked it although some parts were kinda slow.
Marko
I did get this for Christmas from my wife and there are some cool extras on the Blu-Ray. I haven't watched all of them yet though.
I got this and Thor as Christmas presents and I have to concur someof the extras are great

YES!!!!!
OoH- Rah WillEagle!!
Again, apologies for being late to the party. Just finished watching the film, never really followed Captain America in the comics, knew the basics, so the origin part of the story was greatly appreciated. I've seen some comment that this was a film of two halves, for me it was three thirds, the origin story, Steve Rogers progression as man & symbol and finally being Captain America. Every time I started to feel the film lull, it perked up, the ensemble was good, though Tommy Lee Jones seemed to switch between phoning it in and chewing up the scenery and not much inbetween. Noticed a few nods and winks to other films and Marvel franchises and none was too over the top, probably missed a shed load more. Three and a half out of five for me.
