Moore Thinks Abrams' Reboot Is Right Direction For Trek

Though happy to be writing a show where 'torture and rape and killing babies' is permissible, he welcomes a return to Star Trek roots.

Cool. Abrams will certainly bring a strong sense of visual style to the table. It will still be strange to see other actors in those roles. Hopefully, the script will be strong enough to distract us. I think Abrams is the best choice. Otherwise, I'd say Bryan Singer. But after "Superman Returns", I don't know.

The movie is going to be a prequel, not a reboot.  :blink

The story itself may actually fall in the timeline before TOS but the idea is to essentially reboot Star Trek with new actors filling the original roles. If it is successful then likely there will be additional films utilizing the same cast and characters. Now obviously as the actors age they are not going be able to stay within the pre TOS timeline. Also, from what I understand, the story will explore Kirk and Spock's first meeting and their first adventure together on the Enterprise. So, as far as I can tell Abrams is rebooting Star Trek!

This right here effectively makes the movie a prequel as far as I am concerned.

J.J. Abrams has said the film will respect established canon.  So, unless the man is lying to get me to go see his reboot movie, I'm going to choose to believe that it is a prequel, not a reboot.  :biggrin

Will certain aspects of the original TV series be reimagined?  Sure.  Will the spin-offs and movies be completely ignored?  No.  The way I see it, J.J. Abrams is respecting canon yet telling his own Star Trek story.  Really, it would be quite easy to do this movie prequel to the original TV show without dealing with continuity issues.  Even if there are continuity issues, it would only be with the TV show the movie is based on and the related six movies.  Given that Abrams is a fan of the original series and probably those six movies, I don't see that as being an issue.

In conclussion, everything points to this being a prequel movie.  If it is going to be a reboot, I'll believe it when I see some concrete evidence.  If it's a reboot, that means the Star Trek world I know and love is done and over, being ignored in favor of a reimagined world.  Reimaginings are unimaginative, so I'll pass.

Nothing is set in stone on Star Trek XI yet.  We have gotten mostly rumors on the plot, characters, timeline, etc.  From what I have heard I consider it might be a bit of both.  A semi-prequel and a reboot.  If the idea of visiting the era of the very early days of Kirk and Spock is true, then it is a slight prequel to the original series.  But not really a full prequel like Enterprise was.  There is also talk of changing things slightly to sort of bring it up to the modern era - which is kind of a reboot.

No one will really know for sure what it is until we all see it on December 25, 2008.

In looking at what has been "officially" said about the movie the fact is that Abrams has not even confirmed that the movie is a Star Trek movie with the original characters. The only thing he has officially said is that, and I quote..."James T Kirk appears in the movie.". Did you notice the little word "appears"? Now why would he word it that way instead of saying the movie will be about James T. Kirk? Is it possible that Kirk is only a side character to introduce us to a new crew set in the TOS time period? :ohbaby

I like that idea much better than the prequel TOS or Reboot idea.. guess we just have to wait and see.

I agree to some extent.  I think it will be a prequel with some things reimagined.  For example, if we see the Klingons as they appeared in the 1960's, people are going to laugh their way out of the movie theater.  If the movie is to be taken seriously, some changes have to be made.  For example, use the TNG-era Klingon look that everyone is familiar with.  Give the Enterprise some detail without changing it.  Show new locations within the ship.  Add additional uniforms to those we've seen in the TV show.  Instead of pictures of space anamolies on the bridge, show detailed computer readouts.  Keep the switches and buttons, but maybe add a few touch screens in places that weren't usually shown in a TV episode.  This is the type of reimagining I expect to see.  When the movie is over with, one should be able to watch a few episodes of the TV show and come away with the feeling that this movie is how it all began.

As for weather it'll be a prequel or reboot, we'll know when we see the previews.
