Have you ever listened to Spock's Beard?

They're great! A friend turned me on to "V". Have you heard any of Neal Morse's solo stuff? I haven't yet.

If you like Spocks Beard then you should listen to Tranatlantic. Transatlantic is a supergroup project with Neal Morse (Spock's Beard), Mike Portnoy (Dream Theater), Pete Trewavas (Marillion) and Roine Stolt (The Flower Kings).

I really think their collaborative efforts are far better than what they did with the groups they came from, BUT that said each group is great in their own rights. I especially love The Flower Kings. Progressive rock is my bag! :metallica:

Yes, in fact, I have some of Neal's music sitting right here!  Good stuff!

Ricky,

Have you ever listened to YES? I think they are one of the best groups of all time in progressive rock.

Kevin

Yes.

yeah, I really enjoy their stuff.  I haven't listened to them in years.  But they used to be one of my faves.

Kerry Livgren of Kansas fame did some stuff called "One of possible several musics"  and it was very progressive.  I enjoyed that a lot too.

Perhaps you should revist YES Ricky? They have almost 30 albums and most of them are worth a listen or two.

How about Genesis? Especially the Peter Gabriel days? They were awesome.! I really love their albums Trespass, Nursery Crymes, Foxtrot, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Trick of the Tail.

I was listening to Spock's Beard's album "The Kindness of Strangers" and was struck by how similar their sound is to Genesis. I know that other groups like Gentle Giant, YES, ELP and Pink Floyd have influenced them also but I think their sound is closer to Genesis than other prog bands I know. You can't say Spock's Beard is really "original" but they are very very talented and write some excellent material.

I definitely hear all those influences. It's interesting that as an American band, they are familar with Gentle Giant. Mostly, Canadians and British folk know them. Right, The Beard may not be totally original, but they hit the mark with such a spin that it comes off original. I remember when Todd Rundgren first started Utopia back in the '70s, he took a Prog Rock approach and it didn't quite work. Also, I've found Billy Joel to be highly derivative and folks just love him. With SP, you get glimpses of their influences, but there's enough of them in it to make it work for me. I still need to check out more of their stuff.

I appreciate Spock's Beard for their musicality and desire to just make good music.

I know what you mean Darmok! I was fortunate enough when I was a teenager in the..um..70s, to know a couple of guys who worked at a used record store and they turned me on to some very obscure bands. Gentle Giant is a fabulous band and should have gotten wider recognition. It's unfortunate that progressive rock only saw a few brief shining moments, in the limelight, when there is so much great progressive music out there.

I totally agree. Gentle Giant had a very interesting combination of Classical, British Folk and Funk. I was blown away by "The Power And The Glory". Progressive Rock should have had a much longer run, originally. Great to see the younger bands bringing it back.

Did you ever hear a Patrick Moraz album called "i"? It was done before his stint with Yes. It had some very interesting ideas.

Yes! I am very fond of that album. Of course I didn't know who Moraz was until I became a YES fan but when he joined the band I became interested enough to buy his material.

There a lot of progressive rock bands around and always have been but they just don't get any airplay except on Internet stations or obscure college radio shows. Another group I would highly recommend is Glasshammer. I would say they fall under the Symphonic Prog category. Here is their website:

Check them out! I think you would be pleasantly surprised!

Listened to some selections from "JOURNEY OF THE DUNADAN". There's definitely a Rick Wakeman/Keith Emerson vibe there. Very nice. Thanks for sharing.

You're welcome! Yes they are very keyboard oriented. Do you like Camel? If you like guitar oriented material their stuff is excellent. Another obscure but cool band is Jade Warrior.

You can also learn a lot about progressive music at this site called Progressive Ears. They also have a pretty active chat room and people are always chatting about music in there. Here's the link:
