David Goyer to Direct Magneto

April 27, 2007

Variety is reporting that David Goyer will direct Magneto, the "X-Men" spinoff in development from 20th Century Fox and Marvel Studios that centers on the villain played in the original trilogy by Ian McKellen.

After the first three "X-Men" films grossed more than $1 billion worldwide, Fox and Marvel hatched the spinoff program. Magneto will be the second such movie to go into production. First up is Wolverine, a David Benioff-scripted film that will star Hugh Jackman as the steel-clawed mutant; Fox and Marvel will set a director shortly on that pic.

Goyer will develop a Magneto script that was written by Sheldon Turner.

MTV's Movie Blog examines the storyline for the pending spin-off, with producer Avi Arad doing his hype man routine. "Think of meeting him in [the first "X-Men" movie] as a young boy in a concentration camp," Arad said of the Master of Magnetism. "What happens to his life after the war?" The flick will follow Magneto discovering "if [his powers are] real or not and the whole journey of [his] survival as a young man."

Meh...I am much more looking forward to the Wolverine spinoff......don't get me wrong I like Magneto and Ian McKellan is awesome but I just don't think that Magneto is.......interesting enough, I guess, to get his own movie....the back story in the first X-Men was enough for me.

Yeah I'm with you Gaos... when I heard they were doing spinoffs... and Magneto was one of them I thought to myself "huh" but of course I'll see it, because it's X-Men and I'm sure it will be good.

"Magneto" Depends Upon "Wolverine"

Out doing promotion for "The Unborn", director David Goyer told the online press that Fox is waiting to see how the "Wolverine" film performs at the box-office before commiting to move forward with a similar "Magneto" spin-off.

Goyer says that though the film begins in the WW2 concentration camp, most of the action takes place in the very early 60's and deals with the friendship between Professor X (Charles) and Magneto (Eric).

I am not sure that doing a whole film based around an anti-hero is a very good idea. I like Magneto as the subtle evil villain but he needs to remain and be a villain. I just don't see there being a huge audience for this kind of film but I could be wrong.

Magneto is far from a simple villain.  He didn't start out like that and hasn't stayed like that over the years in the comics.  He simple wants a safe world for mutants.  He and Xavier were best friends for a long time.  They had differing ideas on how to go about things.  I think it could work quite well.  I mean Marvel just put out another "Punisher" film where the "hero" shoots everyone.

And from what I have read Punisher bombed.

That wasn't my point.  My point was a good movie can be made from someone who isn't quite as noble as say Superman or even Spider-Man.  It just takes the right story and the right mix of acting and production..
