Nice cast, great job Rico!

I was worried about an Episode one bash in progress when I turned it on, and was surprised!

It gets way too much of a bad rap, as exampled by our favorite father and son review this week.  :)

we were just having fun! :)

I did stand in line for hours to see the movie, and then went back many times.

I bought the DVD and enjoy the extras a ton.

:)  Star Wars really rocks.

Sean - I generally stay away from the bashing method of reviews - don't see the point.  While I will have fun once in awhile with something (see "Spock's Brain" show for that), I try to find the good points in a particular episode or movie review.  I still think there are a lot of fun things in TPM, and it's well worth watching and owning a copy.

I know this sounds weird, but I think I overwatched it.  There was so much hype and stuff surrounding it and it had been so long since we had some new star wars stuff that I wore out one VHS copy.  In fact we stood in line at our local Walmart just to pick up the VHS tape, like 6 a.m. one morning.  I think sometimes I take for granted TPM.  Like you said on the review Rico- it was a great first time for many things, and it was a grand Lucas show.

Honestly though, the next two films were much better for adults.  Now, my kids went ape over TPM, but by the time they got to aotc and rots their CGI was better, and the storyline was much more deep and adult.

I am just happy we got more Star Wars.   That is always cool.

Yeah the first movie was almost as kid as that ewok video but i think Lucaus asumed kids from 1995 (me) would be old enough when it comes out.

Nice podcast. This is becoming an addiction.

Interesting to hear the varying comments on the movie. While the movie had some interesting elements (such as the fight scenes with Darth Maul and his amazing light saber), I find it to be a jumble of engineered crowd pleasing elements. These things don't necessarily make a story. I remember the excitement of anticipation as the release date approached. Watching the movie for the first time, I found Jarjar Binks to be quite the distraction. Myself and other African Americans find him too reminiscent of Steppin Fetchit, an embarrassing character from the 30's - 40's. His speech seems to be a mixture of American ebonics and Jamaican. I can watch the other two movies, but just can't watch this one again.

Another fun filled Podcast Rico... love the teaser tone poem you played.. I loved them all but that was my favorite "One Love" I played those teaser trailers over and over. I liked all the reviews and I didn't mind our favorite father and son review even though I don't agree with them, it was fun. Jeff great reviews on the collectibles. I watched Episode One on Saturday before the podcast and enjoyed it a lot.. got me in the Star Wars mood.

Nice job Rico. Listened to it at work today.

I must say that while I was underwhelmed with it when I first saw it, its still enjoyable. The two followups were much better.

The original 3 came at a time when they were just not like anything we had seen before. Hard to expect the newer ones to recapture that magic. But they did complete the story, and Yoda was cooler than ever.

Fantastic show Rico, I really enjoyed it. I really appreciated hearing your thoughts on the movie. I enjoy this movie a lot, but do realize there are a few short comings as well, and was pleased that you gave it a very fair review. I really appreciated everyone else input as well, Always enjoy the Moyers Father and Son reviews, and found it Funny. I liked hearing Bryans comments as well, and agreed with a lot he said. I must admit, listening to Kennys memories, gave a me a few goosebumps, as it reminded me of my excitement and anticipation for the lead up to the movie, great job Kenny. I recall as well when the first trailer came out, spending a long time waiting for it to download. Excellent podcast.

Great podcast, as usual, just one comment.  Han Solo Rico?  I really see you as more of a Luke kind of guy, maybe it's just me...

Hehe Joby....   you probably are more right on that.  I definitely felt more like Luke when I was a bit younger, but there's a lot of Han in me as well.  At least when it comes to Princesses!  ;)

Rico,

Congrats on a great Podcast, listened to it on both my drive in and back from work today! It was long but it held my interest.

Not much to add, most of the comments below cover it for me as well.

Though it might be a little harsh to hear, I agree with the "a jumble of engineered crowd pleasing elements" from Poodyglitz.

I'm a Obee One kind of guy.

PS Prayers for the kids in VA. May a force be with them and their families.

Get on the Wait List for an item you want.  I have done that with a few things and they always get returns and cancellations so you can usually get what you want.

Good podcast Rico.   Like probably a lot of us, I had grown up on "Star Wars" and was extremely excited to hear that we were going to get more movies.  I remember I used to have dreams about seeing it years before it came out.  That first Teaser and Trailer looked soooo much like real "Star Wars" it was amazing.  I watched them over and over.  I couldn't help being a little disappointed when I actually saw it.  Granted, my expectations were probably higher than any movie that's come out.  It was probably higher than "Empire" or "Jedi" since I'd waited so long to see another "Star Wars" film.
I also hated the midiclorian explanation of the force and Anakin's birth at the time.  I thought it was an almost Trekian technobabble explanation for something that didn't need explaining.  I think, though, that the reason Lucas did it was explained in "Revenge of the Sith".   I'm at work and don't have the movie in front of me right now, but doesn't Palpatine explain to Anakin in his story in the Opera that the Sith had the power to create life through the midiclorians?  He doesn't come out and say he created Anakin, but I always interpreted that as Palpatine somehow used his Dark Force powers to create Anakin who would be the ultimate Jedi apprentice.  I think that makes Anakin's birth and lack of a physical father much more interesting.

These guys lose me when they get too mystical/messianic. I still haven't seen the last Matrix movie because of the second one. I was fine when Neo was Superman inside the matrix, but rolled my eyes when he stopped the sentinels in the real world.

I love when you talk about other things for like 20-30 minutes and then you realize you havn't gotten to the movie and or episode yet. It really makes it seem more like a friendly conversation, and less like a talk show about the movie.   you know?

You also make a great point about Jar-Jar.  I do not like him at all, but as you said.  He's still being talked about today, still is in fan cartoons and i'm sure kids liked him.  And that makes him popular.  As much as I hate to say it.

One negative thing about the movie is this, and if it's been said before I apologize.  I really think the dialouge is very sub-par, and even boring at parts.  Lucas has some great actors in that movie, Liam Niesen, Samuel L. Jackson,  Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman.   I really think that he didn't use thier acting skills to the full extent.

JoSpiv - thanks for the comments about the podcast and how I approach it.  I do try to have some fun with it and discuss other things before the main topic.  But I also try to keep each show around an hour or so, which makes it a bit tricky sometimes.

I may just one week - probably a midweek show - just kind of chat or something.  Maybe do some kind of Q&A like:  What do you want to know about Rico that you don't know yet?  LOL!  Do you think people would enjoy that?

P.S.  I agree with your comments on the dialogue.  The writing didn't utilize the actors fully at all in Ep. I.

I for one say go for it. With as many episodes as I've listened to thus far, you're like a friend who shares his insights into the things I'm also interested in. IMHO, "Treks In Sci-Fi" is more than just a show, it's a community.

That's my :2cents

Rico about the Q & A episode.   You should look into Talkshoe.com.   It allows you to open a chat room and have people call into the show with thier phones.  Unlike skype where you need a microphone and software.  A bunch of people can call in and you choose who to mute and unmute so they can speak.

It's an excellent way to do a show like that.

This was posted on my blog after listening to this episode.

Rico, thank you very much for doing this wonderful podcast.

----------------

Last night while driving home I listened to Rico's latest Treks In Sci Fi podcast about Star Wars Episode I.

He always plays some audios from his listeners and my buddy Kenny made a wonderful comment about his experience when all the hype was going on. And this brought a tear to my eye because I suddenly remembered how much I enjoyed the whole Episode I ride.

Those memories were cloaked by endless discussions with my friends about whether EI was good or not. Or if Lucas was a good or bad director. If Lucas ruined the story and so on.

Now I agree Episode I might not be the best movie ever or might be the best written story ever, but what people forgot is that Star Wars is about fun. It's fun to watch and it's fun to experience.

So, after listening to the podcast, I decided to write Kenny this email:

    Good morning my friend

I finally had the chance to listen to the Phantom Menace show and as usual, Rico did a great job. But what really got me and even brought a tear to my eye was your comment because I had a very similar experience here.

A couple years had passed since the Especial Editions and the fever for Star Wars was at it's top in me. Then they released the first teaser and oh boy, I must've watched like 800 times. No words, only images and heart pumping music, to end with an explotion engulfing some droids. It was fantastic. From then on I got into a roller coaster of hype and excitement that made me proud of being an Star Wars fan.

I was collecting every single thing I could. Cookie wrappers, toys, posters, music, books.... you name it. Star Wars was back and it was going to be huge.

By that time I was pretty much a lonely guy so I was alone most of the experience, but SW was everywhere I looked at. My house looked like an Star Wars museum.

Then second trailer hit the web and, again, I watched like mad over and over again. I memorized the dialogs and Maul just looked too awesome to be real.

"At last we will reveal ourselves to the Jedi. At last we will have revenge." That line sent shivers up my spine.

Then the big day came. Episode I hit the theaters a month later than in the US. All my American friends had seen thhe movie and I had to isolate myself a bit just to don't get spoilers. But I was there in line. I think I spent like 6 hours waiting with a ton of fans like me. It was a huge party there with people wearing costumes, listening to the music, organizing lightsaber fights... Just fun.

Then I got into the theater, took a sit and waited. Lights went off and you could tell how anxious people were. When the Fox fanfare sounded everyone was cheering, but when the Lucasfilm logo hit the screen there was a standing ovation. Just amazing. It was too hard not to be carried away with all that.

The movie followed and my jaw dropped several times with the impressive visuals, the music, the action... By the time the movie ended I felt exhausted. LOL

The following days I went to the cinema more times and then came the critic perspective. A lot of people didn't like the movie at all.

But I didn't care. It was Star Wars and it was back to bring back my childhood memories and hopes.

So Kenny, your comment brought back all those memories I wanted to share with you.

    Thank you very much.
