USA today had an article on the "Get Smart" movie due out in June 2008. Here's the lowdown and a pic:
By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY
The new Get Smart movie has to contend with two big changes from the original 1965 TV show: the fall of communism and the rise of feminism.
Steve Carell and Anne Hathaway are at work on the remake as spymasters Maxwell Smart and Agent 99, taking over for the late Don Adams and Barbara Feldon, now 75. The movie is set for release in June 2008.
Director Peter Segal (50 First Dates, Tommy Boy) says the challenge was figuring out a way to update a silly Cold War comedy for the world after 9/11, finding things to laugh at in the face of global fear.
"We try to show the disconnect between government agencies as we saw right after 9/11 when the CIA and FBI weren't really communicating," Segal says. "We wanted to make sure we were politically satirical."
The anarchy group known as KAOS is back for more foiling, and the mockery tends to stay closer to bureaucratic bungling.

"Obviously, Max works for CONTROL, and there's a lot of infighting within Washington over who's responsible for which parts of the world," Segal says.
The story focuses on KAOS' blackmailing the United States by threatening to give away launch codes for nuclear bombs that are in the hands of bad guys.
"Max has to figure out where the bombs are and stop them, ultimately saving the world," Segal says.
Meanwhile, the iconic shoe-phone and Cone of Silence make their return.
Carell's Oscar-winning Little Miss Sunshine co-star Alan Arkin takes on the role of CONTROL's Chief, a gruff straight man originally played by the late Edward Platt.
The film updates the relationship between the two heroes, telling an origin story of how Smart became an agent and met 99. In this version, she is the veteran spy who takes the newcomer under her wing.
"In the TV show, she was the woman who stood firmly behind her man," Segal says. When Smart failed to live up to his name, Feldon's character tended to giggle it away with an eye roll and an "Oh, Max!"
"That's a little dated for today," Segal says. "99 is a little more kick-(butt) and tougher, more emancipated. She's more the female James Bond, teaching him the ropes."
I'm a huge Get Smart fan and I'm definitely looking forward to this new movie. I just recently got the original series on DVD and am working my way through Season 2. I'm really looking forward to how they'll fit it into the current political atmosphere.
I love this show as a kid, not sure how I feel now that i'm an adult. But I do like the casting. Guess I'll have to wait and see.
I think they both really look the part for the roles. I think it might turn out well.
I really am pleased with the casting choices. Both are fine actors and im definately partial to Anne.
If anyone remembers the other Get Smart movie, 'The Nude Bomb'...well, that was really bad. We need a good remake to hopefully erase that from memory.
Was "Nude Bomb" the one with the office desk that could do 60 on the freeway ? I thought there were 2 attempts with a get-smart movie. I think Nude Bomb was the better of the two. The actors for the lead roles sound great. Any word on Mel Brooks/Buck Henry getting involved with the writing ? Who was the agent was in the waste baskets and mail chutes ?
Yes, Nude Bomb had the desk/car. I believe it ended up with a climatic battle at Universal Studios. If I remember correctly, there was also "Get Smart Again" which was a made-for-TV movie that actually had most of the original actors/characters. It was a much better attempt, but unfortunately it wasn't as well promoted, so no one remembers it. So it didn't really undo the damage of the Nude Bomb.
I'm really looking forward to the new movie, but I've been hearing some disturbing rumors about the relations between the Producers and Mel Brooks and Buck Henry. I'm afraid that kind of negative Karma is going to have a bad impact on the film. I hope I'm wrong.
And the agent who was always assigned to the various tight quarters was Agent 13 played by Dave Ketchum.
This could be a lot of fun and I'm looking forward to it. I own the Time-Life 5 season box set that was released of the original series and I always get a laugh from those episodes.

This movie will either be really really good or really bad
Without Mel Brooks, Buck Henry and other from the original -- I'm not feeling too confident. Carell, Hawthorne and Arkin are a great cast. Most people were thinking The Rock would be playing Hymie - - but that is not the case. I'm sure more info will be broght to light in the next year.
Well, I just viewed a trailer for this film and it actually looks really good! Here is a link for those who care:

Thanks for this Kevin.. it looks funny. I loved the original Get Smart. it's tough to see other people in there shoes.. but I'll give it a chance.
Thanks for the link, the movie looks cool, and I am looking forward to it. I like Steve Carell and I like the Rock, so I should like this movie.
I have seen the show off and on throughout my life and have always enjoyed it. I finally got to see the trailer yesterday and I have to say it looks really good. Carrell has always struck me as a fine comedic actor with an amazing sense of timing so he is perfect for this role.
Agreed. Steve Carell was the perfect choice for the role. I'm really looking forward to the movie. When i was a kid, my grandmother and I watched reruns of the TV show on Nick at Nite. Pretty rad.

Umm....that is the same trailer I gave a link to but mine is in a lot higher quality than that low res Youtube video.
Kevin
Yes, I'm quite aware of that. Some people like the quickness of YouTube. And I can't embed the other video on the forums like I can with YouTube.
P.S. Ktrek I was only trying to give folks another way to view the trailer here easily. I do know some people have trouble with other, higher res. versions that use the latest Quicktime or other formats. Didn't mean to say they shouldn't take a look at the higher res. link that you had posted. Hope that clears up my intentions.
Think this is a new poster
Here's a new International poster
New International Trailer... you can see it here on you tube
if you want to see a clean version without subtitle.. clip on the link

That looks great to me. I love the actors they picked for this. Should be a lot of fun!
Looks like it might be pretty fun.

Not nearly enough storage for me. I've filled my new 80 GB iPOD about half way already.
*** MINOR SPOILERS ****
Just got back from Get Smart. Fun movie (James Bond meets The Office). I think they had a good balance of action/humor. When it was first announced, there was only one person that could play Hymie (yes, he's in the movie). Sure enough, it was him. As expected there were cameos/references to the original series - a few suprises. For those who - are old enough :) - to remember, it was a nice homage. Great cast - including Heroes Hero. Of course he's a techie. I smell sequel - Steve Carrell is VERY funny guy.
Just got back from seeing Get Smart... loved it.. action packed and funny as can be. A must see this summer.
I saw this movie yesterday, and I enjoyed it a lot. Since I am a big fan of the Office, I knew I would like Steve Carell and I did. I also like the Rock, so was happy to see him in the movie as well, though a bit disappointed how he turned out in the end. I agree it was a lot of fun, and if they make another, I will definitely go and see.
