Title: Supermarionation
Post by: Poodyglitz on April 05, 2007, 06:33:21 AM
O.K., it was brought up by someone in another thread, so I'll throw it out there. Which of the Gerry & Sylvia Anderson shows do you remember? My experience as a Yank with these shows is as follows:

Supercar
Fireball XL-5
Stingray
Thunderbirds

I did see Joe 90 as an adult in the '70s, as well as part of Captain Scarlett. Would have liked to experienced the latter first-run, as I did the ones mentioned earlier.

Non Supermarionation shows I remember are:

UFO
Space: 1999
The Protectors
(end theme by Tom Jones)

Then there was the movie, Journey to the Far Side of the Sun

The coolest thing was the ships in most of these. Also, the music was pretty memorable. Still find myself singing the themes to Thunderbirds, Fireball XL-5 and UFO. Even though I don't know all the words, the theme to The Protectors is reverberating in the cavern of my memory.

As a kid, I used to have a toy Supercar with Mike Mercury. Also had a Fireball XL-5 lunchbox. Wanted the toy of that, as well as the Thunderbirds stuff. UFO was the last of the shows to make a big impact on me. By then, I think I could sense the lack of compelling storytelling. I wasn't so much into Space: 1999 (probably, because I was older).

The only ones I really saw were the Thunderbirds and Space: 1999 - both of which I love.  I think I may have seen an episode or two of UFO and The Protectors.

There's one missing in the list:

Stingray
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E06cNv55jTs

Stingray End Theme (incorporated into an episode)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CKX78GBVr9w

The theme songs for those Gerry Anderson shows were just brilliant. My personal favorites are "UFO", "Thunderbirds" (did you see "The Thunderbirds Are Go" where a marching band performed the theme?) and "Stingray". The two "Fireball XL-5 themes are also stuck in the brain.

On another note, does anyone remember these(?):
