Title: RPG Resources
Post by: Jen on February 27, 2007, 04:59:30 PM
Like alot of you guys I'm a big Star Trek geek, but I'm not up on lingo or Star Trek termonology. Star Wars, yes...Star Trek, not as much as I'd like. So, before I post something "technical", I either draw on my own knowledge, look it up in my TNG Technical Manual (bought it a couple of weeks ago for $5), or I look it up online to make sure what I post sounds Star Trekky. I figured these links might be helpful/interesting to other folks participating in the RPG.  Enjoy!  ;)

Books you might want to use:
Starfleet Survival Guide (I've used this a few times... lots of good stuff in it)

RPG Book on Creatures and Aliens:

Operations (pricy but I bet you can get it cheaper or used somewhere else)

Thanks for posting this.  I'd already been thinking that we needed something like this.  All the stuff I wrote about in the RPG (dolamide, nitrium parasites) is real Star Trek lingo.  I used Memory Alpha which you've already linked.  That website is great.  I also used:

The Particles of Star Trek. http://www.midwinter.com/~koreth/particles/ (http://www.midwinter.com/~koreth/particles/)

BTW, since you're the Chief Science Officer, click on this link to find out how the crew of the Enterprise got rid of those pesky nitrium parasites: http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Nitrium_parasite (http://memory-alpha.org/en/wiki/Nitrium_parasite)

Just a small FYI on the wiki, it's been hit by some spam, I'll be cleaning it up this weekend.

I have been toying with the idea of writing my own Sci-Fi novel. I've always wanted to write a book, but have never really had the confidence to do so. I wasn't expecting it, but the RPG has rekindled my interest and sparked my courage. I don't know for certain that I'll see this through, but I'm starting to research what it takes to write a well crafted, compelling novel.

I thought some of you might be interested in these books I picked up recently. So far, I'm really enjoying, "Make A Scene: Crafting a Powerful Story One Scene At A time" by Jordon e. Rosenfeld. I am learning very helpful tips on constructing stories through scenes. It's quite an art and it's pivotal to the development of a "page turner". I plan to use what I've learned here to direct our RPG better. Each of our posts is a scene, and this book should help us construct them better and keep the pace of the story moving at a good clip.  If you don't want to read this book, but are still interested in it, I am contemplating reading a paragraph or two each week on the Ready Room to help our writers. Let me know if this interests any of you.

I also picked up a novel called, "Creating Characters: How To Build Story People" by Dwight V. Swain. I haven't started reading it yet, but I'll let you know when I do. I'm looking forward to learning everything I can about writing.

I'm actually back to rewrites on my first book. Going from first to third is annoying, but I'm back on track and rewrote the first two chapters and the 26th chapter last week.

I'm still reading that book on creating scenes and will probably start a post that outlines some points I've learned. It's really good and I recommend it to anyone interested in writing professionally or in our RPG. It's not at all boring, like many text books can be, and it's RICH with information.

I also started listening to a few podcasts that offer tips to writers. The one I'm listening to now is called Tale Chasing. You can find it on iTunes. The host is an aspiring author and she relays information on her podcast that she learns from her critique groups. So far, I'm enjoying it. She recommended another podcast called Write Now that I also subscribed to.

Here's a very fun resource for writers, gamers and artists. The site contains a random generator for almost anything:

Beings
Characters
Combat
Darkness/Evil
Equipment
Humor
Magic
Media/Fandom
Names
Organizations
Setting
Superheroes/Sentai
Skills/Abilites/Traits
Technology
Writing

Its a lot of fun and it may help folks come up with new characters, backstories or plot ideas.
