Mummy 3 Spoilers Unwrapped

Al Gough, who is co-writing the third installment in the Mummy film franchise with partner Miles Millar, told SCI FI Wire that the sequel will unwrap a new mummy and feature a character who is the grown son of Rick and Evie (played in the previous films by Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz). It's aiming to shoot this summer under director Rob Cohen (Stealth) for a 2008 release.

Gough and Millar, who also created The CW's Smallville, said the sequel will also have a new concept. "Stephen Sommers [who wrote and directed the previous two films] and his partner, Bob Ducsay, ... approached us and said, 'Steve doesn't want to write the third movie. Would you guys be interested?'" Gough said in an interview. "And we were like, 'Well, it's a third.' But then they had a concept for it that we really liked. They had an idea for the movie, which is something we always wanted to do. So we're like, 'Well, if we don't do it, they're going to do it in this movie.'"

Gough said that he and Millar added their own ideas to the script, including a storyline centering on the main characters of Rick and Evie. "We figured out a really good family story with Rick and Evie, and [their son] Alex is now grown up. So it's really interesting." Alex was played as a young boy in 2001's The Mummy Returns by Freddie Boath.

As for whether Fraser and Weisz will reprise their roles in the film, Gough said that he was confident the script is good enough to persuade them to return. "They're in negotiations," he said. "So the plan is to bring them back. I think it'll end up being Brendan and Rachel, ultimately. They're the core of the movie. That's why people love the Mummy movies. And then it's taking that and then expanding it and introducing [a] new character and a new mummy. So we're really excited to get going. We met with Rob Cohen today, and he's really jazzed to do it. So fingers crossed, God willing, we'll be shooting this summer and it'll be out in the summer of '08."

I enjoyed the first two.  I think Brendon Fraser is underrated.  I always like him in the films he does.

Thats good news. My wife will be very happy, as she is a big fan of the two Mummy Movies. I really enjoyed them as well, along with the Scorpion King.

The Mummy movies creeped me out!  They were cool, but I didn't want to see bugs for awhile.  :)

I don't think I let me kids ever see them.  Hmmmm.

The third one will be interesting.  They always kind of reminded me of Raiders of the Lost Ark.  Just a little. Oooh.. that mummy the first time we saw him on the screen... yuck!  What a killer job on the CGI.

Brendan Fraser Signs For Mummy 3

Brendan Fraser has closed a deal to return in The Mummy 3, but Rachel Weisz is not coming back, Variety reported.

Rob Cohen will direct the sequel, which is expected to begin production late in the summer. It will be set in China and will introduce Jet Li as a villain.

Universal is planning a summer 2008 release; the franchise has earned more than $830 million worldwide. The Mummy debuted in 1999 and The Mummy Returns in 2001.

Weisz has won an Oscar and had a baby since the last installment and has dropped out of talks to reprise her role.

The Mummy 3's script is by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough, who will do another pass that will factor in the absence of Weisz. Universal is holding up a green light pending a final rewrite, but a late summer start date is still expected.

I loved the first two movies....they were fun, which seems to be lacking lately in a lot of the stuff Hollywood is churning out.  Glad to hear that Brendan Fraser has signed on.

Both were good fun!  Looking forward to another.  Still hoping Ms. Weisz joins them.

Yeah I was happy to hear that Frasier was coming back but I wish Weisz was coming back as well. I hope they don't kill her off or have them divorced.

It is to bad that she will not be in the next one, but maybe they will have a Father/Son type adventure. Jet Li as a villain sounds intriguing as well. Actually, I wish they would make another Scorpion King movie as well, as I really liked the Rock in that Movie.

Luke Ford Joins Mummy 3

Universal Pictures and director Rob Cohen have set Luke Ford to star in the third installment of The Mummy, in a move that potentially sets the franchise up for future films, Variety reported. The 26-year-old Australian actor was cast with the expectation that he will eventually carry the franchise.

Ford will play Alex O'Connell, the grown-up son of Brendan Fraser's Rick O'Connell and Rachel Weisz's Evelyn Carnahan O'Connell from the first two Mummy films. (Freddie Boath played the character as a boy in The Mummy Returns.) Alex journeys into the forbidden tombs of China and into the Himalayas, where he and Fraser's character run into a new shape-shifting mummy, a former Chinese emperor who was cursed by a female wizard. (Weisz declined to return for the third Mummy.)

Jet Li plays the mummy. Michelle Yeoh plays the wizard. The script was written by Smallville creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough. Shooting will begin in Montreal on July 27 and then move to China. The film is eyeing a July 2008 release date. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM.

I agree.  This, on the surface, sounds like it has LOADS of potential.  I love their choice of Chinese actors as well.  Li and Yeoh are great.

There is a wealth of different mummy legends. There's no reason these flicks couldn't have two or three movies per story arc, and deal with just different mummy legends.

I read  this on the Slice of Sci Fi website...

Fraser Has Old Love Interest With a New Face For “Mummy 3?

Several weeks ago on one of our Slice of SciFi shows we reported that Rachel Weisz opted out of the next Mummy flick in order to star in two other movie vehicles. Brenden Fraser also was reluctant to return, but when Universal Pictures offered him a paycheck that would put him in the category of one of the highest payed actors in Hollywood, he signed on to the project.

Now, Slice has learned that veteran actress Maria Bello (”A History of Violence,” “Thank You For Not Smoking”) will be Fraser’s wife and love interest in the film. Bello will portray Evelyn Carnahan O’Connell, the same character played by Weisz in the first two installments of the high grossing Mummy films ($830 million to date in gross ticket sales).

This time around she and Fraser set out on an adventureous trek to China with their young-adult son, played by Luke Ford. They are there to investigate the Buddhist conclaves in the Himalayas and to study the forbidden mummy tombs located in China. They soon find themselves doing battle with a mummy able to change his shape at will, whom they discover to be none other than a cursed Chinese emperor. Jet Li will portray the mummy emperor while the beautiful Michelle Yeoh plays the wizard who placed the mummy curse on him.

***********
I'm not so happy that they opited to replace the actress instead of just writing the charcter out. But I will reserve my judgment until I see the movie.

I agree, they should have just written her out. But Bello is a good actress. I loved her in Assault on Precinct 13 (even if the flick was a bit flawed) and think she'll do a good job in an action role. But like you, STF5, I wish she could have been a different character. Wouldn't it have been cool to see Frasier's character, whose wife is hurt and in a hospital bed, or has died, struggling with that while on an adventure with a different woman? That would add some facets to an admittedly 1 dimensional franchise.

This just came out on DVD today and I bought a Blu-Ray copy. Because of all the bad hype, including some on this site, I did not go see this at the theater. However, after having seen it I wish I had. I loved the film! It is so much better and far more creative than the last Indy film. I think peoples opinions about the last Indiana Jones film are clouded by romanticism over a character, and an actor, who are past their prime. This film was a whole lot of fun and although I loved the first two films this is now my favorite. Great sfx, good story, corny in-jokes, lots of action and a great mummy! What more could you want?

Bad hype?  Here??  Well, I liked it.  Not more than Indy, but it was a fun movie and better than the second Mummy.  I still like the first one the best.

I think like the Indy Movie, people views on this are mixed, some liked it, others not so much. I thought it was ok, my Wife was disappointed, as this was the movie she was most looking forward for the summer. It did not fair very well on rotten tomatoes, as it had a lower rating then it probably deserved, but a low rating non the less.
