I was looking over the members list of names and some of the names stuck me as kind of odd and then I thought I would ask where did your forum name come from?
Startrekfanatic5 is pretty much self explained. I'm a huge Star Trek fanatic and the reason I choose 5 is because it's my favorite number.
Next....
....it's my first name follwed by my middle initial and initial of my last name. :).
Mine is pretty simple - I think I have said before. My real name is Rick, but several years back some friends got to calling my Rico, due to my "smooth" Rico Suave type personality - LOL! So when I started the podcast I thought it would be fun to use Rico for it.
I actually remember being on a waiting list at my local ISP to get dial up 11 years ago or so. Yeah, our little town of Aberdeen was getting Internet access and I had a packard bell DX4 computer that our mother in law had bought at Walmart for us. get this...with a whopping 4 megs of ram! WOW! So, they called me and said that my name was next, come on down and sign up, pay your deposit and hook up your modem. So I did. They asked me for a username and password.... it was actually confusing at the time.. so....
I took my last name, and they suggested that I have letters and numbers in both my username and password.. so I thought of a Heavy Metal Christian Rock band that I really enjoyed... Stryper. The drummer had a big 777 on his drum chair during one of his concerts... it popped in my head, and TADA! My user name moyer777 was born. So there you go, not Rocket Science, just craziness and being spontaneous. :) and thus moyer777@techline.com was established, now after all of these years and hundreds of web pages, I have good spam blocker. :)
It wasn't till later that I got a few domains.
I'm like Rico...My forum name is a no-brainer (I wasn't feeling particularly clever when I chose my handle) I just decided on using my nickname. My real name is Jennifer. Acquaintances call me Jenny but my family and friends call me Jen. Hi friends!
Well, mine is a longer explination than that I guess.
About 5 years ago now I was wanting a new alias to use on the net & had recently been to Cyprus on holiday where they have a really nice local Beer called "Keo". I added to that the term Zen as I have read up a lot on the subject and find it interesting and Hey Presto I have a name on the net that only I use, any Keozen you see on the net is 99% sure to be me (I also own keozen.com etc now).
Nice to see you again Keozen!
Mine is Pretty explanatory as well, My Name is Jeff. I am a Star Wars( and Star Trek and Sci Fi fan) and and chose Jedi as I thought it was pretty cool. I first chose it when playing multiplayer X-Wing vs Tie Fighter game a few years back. It is pretty common username, so on some other forums or other websites, I some times use jedijeff-edm, which is the abbreivated form of the city I come from.
moyer777 - now that you mention 777 and Stryper, thats where I remember seeing it. I had long forgotten about them, but remember them being big for awhile in the 80's.

Thanks Rico!
I've had a lot of "Family Stuff" crop up recently so I've been away from the net in general. I should be back in force now tho ;)

yeah, they got back together, they have a couple new CD's out. I actually got to see them in Vegas a few years ago at the House of Blues, the next day I got to go to Star Trek the Experience. It was a great few days. I like the new CD, it really rocks. It's called Reborn. Pretty crankin' stuff.

Thats cool, seems like a lot of Bands from the 80's are getting back together, Kind of a Reanassaince for them. Does Stryper still plays a harder edge rock?
Stryper! good grief I remember those guys! Them and Dokken they were really Rockin'
I have three or four handles that I use.
Most of them are names I found in the Bible.
Enoch is my favorite handle. If it is taken, I go to Elizur, Azariah or Antioch.
When I joined this board, my main character in World of Warcraft was Elizur, although now currently it is actually Azariah. My guildies call me 'Azzy.'
yeah, they still rock pretty heavy. Check out their website..
http://www.stryper.com (http://www.stryper.com)
I almost named my oldest son Ezra. But my mom had a fit. :)
He ended up being Nathan.
I started using the handle PepperDude when I began playing Battlefield 1942 (one of the greatest games of all time). :metallica: As I got really good at the game, I decided to come up with a permanent nickname.
At the time I worked at an elementary school. I enjoyed working with the kids and one of them would sometimes wear a blue fraternity-like jacket with the word "Pepper" embroidered on the upper left part of the front of the jacket. I thought the jacket looked very cool.
When I started my little handle brainstorming, the first thing that popped to my mind were the white, embroidered, cursive letters that spelled the word "Pepper" against a blue background. Blue was my favorite color, the cursive letters looked cool, and I liked the sound of the word. Then I added the word "Dude" and PepperDude became my permanent online handle. . .
. . .And PepperDude became well-known in my favorite BF1942 server. . .
I have been using two names since high school. The first is Genessa, which I created in middle school from the first book in the Bible. I always thought that I would name my kid this...then I grew up and decided not to have children! LOL! So, I took the name for my main WOW character...a level 60 pally on Uther. My guildies call me Gen in real life.
I've used Chrystabel more regularly since my college days in the late 80s when I was in the SCA. The name comes from the Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem "Christabel." I changed the i to a y and became Chrystabel of Kent. After my SCA days, I became Chrystabel Thorne online. Today I go by Chrystabel or Chrys. I like it much better than Amy and would change my name if it wouldn't profoundly disappoint my mother. Alas, I'll just have to stick with it as a nickname online. Oh, and Chrystabel was my first WOW character on my husband's account...a NE warrior that I think got up to level 24. I don't remember. I quit playing several months ago due to a lack of time. All this talk about Gen and Chrys and the expansion are making me rethink my decision! LOL!
Interesting comments on the names from everyone. Amy/Chrys - didn't recall you used to play WOW too. Cool. Oh, if you really want to get hooked again - go by the expansion. It's a blast.
Hmm... my name... well, I used to be called enterprise_nx01, but that was because Enterprise had just come out and I was lacking imagination. So awhile back I decided to change to something, let's say a little more original...
I'm a PC guy, never liked the controls on consoles, especially for FPSs, so I went with "the_wasd_man" As in, the guy that plays PC shooters. For, you see, the W-A-S-D keys are most often used for directional movement and...
wait, you probably know all this already, don't you? :P
the_wasd_man, do you own one of the famous (or infamous?) WASD T-shirts?
I know what you mean about disliking gamepads--mouse and keyboard are the absolute best for FPSs.
BTW, I don't like using the WASD keys. I use the ESDF keys because it gives me an extra column of keys to work with.
I've gone by many forum names over the years but Mr. O and MrOsterman seem to be my standards for most of the more "mature" groups that I chat with. It's my actual name *gasp* but I also figure at this stage in my life too much anonyminty is probably unlikely anyways.
And it's easier to remember. No sitting there after not having logged into a forum for a few months going "Was it Rawlins or Rollins?" (the name of a LARP character I played for a long time named Rollins but was pronounced with a slight accent making it sounds like Rawlins as in "me name's Rawlins, guvna")
Mr. O

What kind of a geek would I be if I didn't? :D
I chose mine because I saw something a couple years ago on the web about the Kirk fighting style. Thought it was funny as heck. I think it was a website about Kirk-Jitsu. They had screencaps of him leaping, and of course the famous two fisted chop.
I love Star Trek, especially the original, but im not above having some fun with it.
I just love your handle... Kirk-Fu is so cool.
I think you should start a whole line of Starfleet fortune cookies. We could write cool little sayings in them like...
"You will fight a Gorn and win this week"
or
"Your nerve pinch will work today"
"you love multi color cubed food"
"you will not suffer the fate of Seti Alpha Five in your lifetime"
"There is a green woman in your future"
"you will kiss your guest star"
"you have a natural universal translator"
These are just to name a few. I think we could make a million dollars with these...
;)
I have 4 screen names in all of internet-dom which I will explain:
1) Darth Gaos: The name I use on this and a couple of other boards and it is indeed pronounce "Gay-Ohss"..I know Rico has been unsure in the past how to pronounce it. Anyway, the Darth is fairly obvious. Gaos is a Japanese monster that was an adversary of the giant turtle Gamera. It is one of my favorite monster movies was hilariously riffed in Mystery Science Theater 3000, one of the best shows ever.
here is a pic of Gaos:
2) Westrnphlyr: I use this name on other boards. I live in Washington, hence the Westrn part. Phlyr is a combination of the words "Philadelphia" and "Flyers" as I am an Pennsylavania boy by birth and they are my favorite NHL team....even though they roundly suck this year they are still my team.
3) LetGoOfItSlappy: I use this one strictly on the MST3K board. It was a line from one of the episodes where Mike is trying to find a catch phrase for himself.
4) Toaster_Joe: I use this one strictly on the Battlestar Galactica board. Most here know that "Toaster" is the derogatory term for the metal cylons this go around. And Joe is my actual first name. :cylon
So if you see any of these names out there in internet land...say HI!

Hey, that's what mine is!
Last year when I was contemplating getting Stormtrooper armor one of my coworkers took to calling me Stormy. I've occasionally wished I'd used it on the Scifi boards I'm on, but I also like being known for who I am.
I am bald(ing) and love the idea of the Borg. My favorite ST flick is First Contact, and fave show is TNG - Thus Locutus.
I will add, though, that my screen name on other forums is onebadgungan - this comes from a Star Wars RPG where I wound up playing a gungan, and he was fantastically skilled in combat and pretty much won the day - he was One Bad Gungan. Oddly enough, it's always available ...
Bryancd= Bryan C. Dunn. I have never been one for clever or pithy internet persona's, it's just me :).
Hey guys.. there is a huge thread of this already on the forums.. check it out.
http://www.treksf.com/forums/index.php?topic=1456.0
I'm going to combine these two posts.
Huh -- thought I replied to this already. MARK IN Royal Oak. I have about a dozen others I use to filter spam or because I don't know someone and I'm not supposed to talk to strangers. :spidey
Hey Locutus thanks for the nod to my handle explanation I am glad you like it. I will paste it below for anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

Thanks Rico I am glad you like the handle. There is a little bit of a story behind it but the Han does stand for Han Solo of course. The cider part is from a time back in high school when I drank some three month old cider in front of my friends. It was funny at the time at least of course like many things done in high school or college it seems kinda dumb now. Anyways I brought the two together and they just kinda stuck, its been my handle for the longest time and the nice thing is it is unique enough that I don't have to add any random numbers to the end of it that can be a little annoying sometimes. Well i just wanted to say thank you Rico for your podcasts and for starting this community and I hope that i will be able to be a good contributor to it. So have fun over there in Taiwan and I pray that you will have a good trip and arrive safely back home.
Mine is a blatent reference to my comic Zortic.
Ryanlb - Nice Starslip Crisis image! That's another great comic!
Mine comes from an obscure line in an episode of Robot Chicken.
"Wasn't that great? And as an added twist, I'm just three ducks in a man costume! . . . Good night, folks!"
Well another old thread i'm opening up as i know there are afew new members out there. My name comes from MASH as i'm a huge fan of Alan Alda and Donald Sutherland, though Alda's hawkeye is my choice. Plus i'm a bit like Hawkeye in real life (laid back, jokey, though not the womaniser bit so i guess i'm more of a season 4 onwards Hawkeue ha ha). The Meds bit is my nickname, its a shorter version of my Surname which is Meddings.
Iceman was given to me in combat training in the military during wargame exercises by one of my commanding officers as a result of the ruthless military tactics that I used during the training. It stuck with me and followed me through my military career of which currently I hold the rank of Lt Col.
I CANNOT believe I never posted in this thread before.
So my real name is Joe. In my grou of freinds there's at least two other joe's so when we were all in the same place, it tended to get confusing. We were sitting aorund on day at my buddy's place and someone said "Joe". Two of us were there so we both tunred. The other Joe said "Ok that's enough I'm older so I get to keep the name. From now on you'll be..." he turned to the TV, we were watching Aramgeddeon and Billy Bob Thornton was on the screen. "...Billy Bob".
It really stuck. At one point my friends were introducing me to people as Billy. A lot of them still only call me Billy.
The 476 comes from (like many) when I was trying to make a hotmail account. I wanted billybob@hotmail.com which was taken. 476 AD is the year the Roman Empire fell so I became billy_bob476@hotmail.com. Since then I've been billybob476 everywhere.
Very funny! I would have never guessed. An interesting 476 story too... My parents almost named ME "Billie", after my dad, but my mom didn't like the fact that my real name would have to be "Willamina". So they settled on "Jennifer"—thank the maker! No offense to any "Willaminas" out there.
FYI, my little brother's name is "Billy"... I think it suits him better than me. ;)

I really like the name, I keep trying to get my wife to call me Billy and she refuses.
As long as my wife doesn't call me "Late for dinner" I'm happy. :)
Mine is pretty easy. My wife would write my name Chris as X when talking to some people we know over the net. Then some of my other friends started calling me X-topher. At that point I said if we are going to use X for my name then it would have to be just X. None of the topher stuff added.
So when making the name for the boards, I wanted to go with X, but they want you to have more than a single letter. I only wanted just the X and thus the name.
My name started out with videogames (go figure). I'm a really big fan of The Legend of Zelda series and when I was introduced to World of Warcraft, I wanted my name to be Link. Well, as you might have guessed, Link was already taken. So I looked around the room for ideas for a name. Eventually, I looked at the Linksys device (whatever we had at the time, can't remember) and I'm like "hey, that might work" so I put in Linksys. Probably due to Copyright infringement, I couldn't use it. So I fiddled with it, eventually coming up with: Sr. Link or Linksr. Sr. Link at the time just sounded bad so I went with Linksr. I had one of the most unique names in the game.
The King part comes from when I started my own guild on my paladin, Linksr. (Main was a druid which I deleted and then regretted deleting). When making the ranks (This was before Burning Crusade) I decided to have some RP in it so I went with these:
King, Queen, Royal Guard, Knight, Peasent
You get the idea. Eventually, my guild rose to 100 in it and many referred to me as "King Linksr". So it became my nickname and I use it often for forums and such. Then the Burning Crusade was released and 5/6ths of all guilds on my server died. Mine died about patch 2.2. I have no doubt when 3.0 is released, the same thing will happen all over again.
Anyway, there is my long winded explanation of my name.
King
Simple explanation here - feathers is simply the first 8 letters of my surname. It's the name I always use on any sot of forum (unless I'm involved in running it when I revert to being 'Mike')
Mine is derived from 2 of my biggest sci-fi loves- Star Wars and Star Trek. 'Wraith' comes from 'Wraith Squadron', a group in Mike Stackpole and Aaron Allston's 'Star Wars: X-Wing' novel series.
If you can't figure out the significance of '1701', you just might be on the wrong forum. ;)
No bloody A, B, C or D!

I have been using davekill since reading of a village in New York state called Fishkill.
Some folks where upset with the name and demanded it be changed. I could not believe how fast people came to judge this community without knowing anything about the people who lived there and I didn't want to forget how easy that is to do.
Plus Kill is the first part of my last name ;)
