Title: Spock's Brain => MST3K style
Post by: Rico on January 15, 2007, 08:24:52 AM
I mentioned this on the last podcast that I want to try a fun, MST3K style podcast for the classic bad TREK episode Spock's Brain.  Here's the plan...  Sometime in early February (exact date to be announced - probably either 2/3 or 2/10 recording) I want to do a Skype call recording while we all watch Spock's Brain together.  I want to get some good silly banter going and have fun with the episode.  The trick with this is everyone will have to have a copy of the episode and start it at the same time.  And I mean a copy without commercials, etc.  A DVD you can play on your computer while Skypeing would be the best setup.  But you will have to have speaker sound off and be listening only with headphones so we don't get multiple audio sources of the show going.  Post here if you are interested in doing this.  I have one person already besides me - so space will be limited.  I think this will be a lot of fun!  :vulcan

Rico, I think this is a great idea.  I thought it would be fun to do a review of a klunker but this is even better.  I dont have that episode w/ me so Ill have to sit this one out but I cant wait to hear the call.  TOS is my favorite series but a couple of the klunkers are bad and this sounds like such a fun idea. Bravo!

Hey, it's Brendan from Maryland. I've joined the forums and hope to visit regularly now. Rico, I'm assuming you were referring to me when you said you already had one person lined up for the podcast. I just bought a headset and installed Skype. I'm really looking forward to it. Should I Netflix Spock's Brain, or would a downloaded version with no commercials do just as well? Thanks.

Brendan - welcome.  Any version of Spock's Brain will do - as long as it's complete with no commercials.

I am setting the date to record this.  We will record on Saturday, Feb. 10th at 1pm EST.  via  Skype.  The session will be limited to 4 others besides me.  Brendan above is one of the four.  I'm guessing the moyers will take one slot as well.  That leaves two openings.  Joby - you still in for that day and time?

As far as I know, that time will be fine for me. If anything comes up, I will let you know in advance so you can find someone else for the spot. I'm pretty psyched to get to participate in breaking new Treks in Sci-Fi  ground- and what cheesy ground it will be. -Brendan

I am still planning on making it, really looking forward to it.  I'll ask ,y wife tonight if our plans that day will interfere and be sure to post if I can't.  It's such a shame we can't increase the number of people in the conference since it seems there's alot of interest in this.  I'd suggest you make this a regular feature if it works out so everyone that want to participate gets a chance.

You're still getting people for this?  Heck I could come over and record it....

Though that's a little odd... nevermind.

Either way, when I listened to your ep. of the Voyager episode Faces, it was VERY hard to hear the episode's dialogue under the voice overs.  IE if I turned up the volume enough to hear the show, when you talked it blared and when I turned that down, I couldn't hear the episode when you had stopped.

Don't know if that was just me or something, but wanted to comment as I'm dying to hear what you guys do with this ep.

Prep work for those in the MST3K "Spock's Brain" cast recording this weekend.

You will need:  A complete copy of the episode (without commercials or edits)  DVD is best for this.
A microphone and a headset.  You can't have the audio going from the episode on a speaker or your mic will pick it up.  This is critical.

I will be getting setup around 12:45pm or so on Saturday to do this.  I will invite those into the conference call.  We will try and get everyone in sync with the show at the same time.  I might take a quick pause at a commercial break or after the intro theme to make sure we are all on the same timing.  As comments come in during the show, try and let everyone have a chance to talk.  Sometimes talking over others happens in these, but maybe we can keep it at a minimum.

I think the list for this is:  four lights (Brendan), the Moyers, Wasdman, Joby.  If anyone else wants to be on standby in case someone doesn't show that would be fine.

I think that's about it for now.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Moyer! I recently purchased a Logitech "Yahoo! Messenger" headset from Radio Shack. It set me back about $20. The quality was surprising for the price I paidâ€"sounds great.

Couple last comments.  I'll be playing the audio for the show on my end, hopefully it will be loud enough for you to all know where we are.  If we are slightly off sync I don't think it will matter a huge amount - if it's just a few seconds at most.  But you obviously will need to listen to the Skype audio to hear what everyone is saying, commenting on, etc.  This might be a bit tricky to pull off, but I think we have a good shot at it.  I'll talk to those involved tomorrow starting at about 12:45pm EST.  :)

I'm going to give up my spot for this, we are taking my baby girl to Monsters Inc. on ice tomorrow at 11a so unfortunately I can't make it.  I'm pretty disappointed, even watched through the episode to have a little something prepared for it but my little girl is going to really enjoy the show tomorrow so it's all good.  Hopefully there's someone that will enjoy taking part in this in my spot.  I'd love to try again next time you do this Ric!  Maybe a TNG episode hint hint?

Nathan (four lights) and I will be there.  We invested in some nice mics and headsets and audio/mic splitters.  We will review the show one more time tonight and be ready for the morning.  This is going to be a blast!

Woo hoo!

Darn it, now I'm the only one that's going to have a horrible audio quality...  ::)
