Title: Indy 4 News - tiny spoilers/pics
Post by: Rico on December 30, 2006, 06:30:03 AM
Details on the next Indy film just in....

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- George Lucas said Friday that filming of the long-awaited "Indiana Jones" movie will begin next year. Harrison Ford, who appeared in the three earlier flicks, the last one coming in 1989, is set to star again. Lucas said he and Steven Spielberg recently finalized the script for the film.

"It's going to be fantastic. It's going to be the best one yet," the 62-year-old filmmaker said during a break from preparing for his duties as grand marshal of Monday's Rose Parade.

Exact film locations have not been decided yet, but Lucas said part of the movie will be shot in Los Angeles.

The fourth chapter of the "Indiana Jones" saga, which will hit theaters in May 2008, has been in development for over a decade with several screenwriters taking a crack at the script, but it only recently gained momentum.

Lucas kept mum about the plot, but said that the latest action flick will be a "character piece" that will include "very interesting mysteries."

"I think it's going to be really cool," Lucas said.

At the inaugural Rome Film Festival in October, the 64-year-old Ford said he was excited to team up with Lucas and Spielberg again for the fourth "Indiana Jones" installment. Ford said he was "fit to continue" to play the title role despite his age.

Ford played Indiana Jones in 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark," 1984's "Temple of Doom" and 1989's "The Last Crusade."

Lucas praised Ford for breathing life into his character.

"Mostly it's the charm of Harrison that makes it work," he said.

Sounds good to me.  I love the Indiana Jones character and movies.

Thats great that they have finally gotten the script finalized and are going to proceed. This has taken so long, that I thought it would never happen.

I am somewhat surprised and happy that Harrison Ford will be playing Indiana as he is in his sixties and for awhile their he was not sure if he was going to reprise his role.

During the Rose Bowl Parade today, George Lucas himself said they are working on the Indianna Jones movie and hope to bring it to us next year.  Cool!

He was the Grand Marshall of the parade!

More Indy IV Details Emerge

George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford have confirmed that a fourth installment in the Indiana Jones franchise is set to begin filming this June, Variety reported. News of the long-awaited sequel film first broke on Dec. 29, as Lucas was preparing to serve as grand marshal of the Rose Parade on New Year's Day. The script by David Koepp (Spider-Man, War of the Worlds) has been finalized and Paramount is eyeing a worldwide release in 2008, the trade paper reported.

Ford will once again reprise his role as the adventuring archeologist in the next film. The 64-year-old actor assured fans that he is up to the physical demands of the role. "I'm delighted to be back in business with my old friends," Ford said. "I don't know if the pants still fit, but I know the hat will."

Meanwhile, Spielberg, who may direct the film, told the trade paper that he's pleased with how the script turned out. "We feel that the script was well worth the wait. We hope it delivers everything you'd expect from our history with Indiana Jones," Spielberg said. "George, Harrison and I are all very excited."

The third film in the series, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, was released in 1989. The new film doesn't yet have an official title.

I hope this does finally happen.  There sure have been a lot of false start rumors on this project for years.   I'm wondering what time period they'll set it in.   I always liked Indy going up against the Nazis.  I assume they'll move the story forward to adjust for Harrison's age.  If "Raiders" took place in the late 30's  and it was made about 25 years ago or so, will this one take place in the 60's?  That just seems like it's not the right time period for Dr Jones.  I'm sure whatever they do that these are the guys who can pull it off.

Indy Has a Son

Indiana Jones has a son and his name is Shia LaBeouf, that is if all the negotiations get finalized, and we have no reason to think they won’t.

While we don’t have any details of the script, Spielberg and company have a vice-grip on it tighter than the lid of a crusty old jar of Jiffy, we can tell you that it comes from screenwriter David Koepp. He is the same guy behind the written words of “Spider Man.”

Of course the great Harrison Ford returns as the famed archeologist, and the rumor is Sean Connery is back to reprise the role of Indy’s dad, so it will be a three generation film.

Shooting begins this June and the movie is scheduled for a May 22, 2008 release.

One question â€" Who’s the mama?

Blanchett and Ford Together?

Cate Blanchett is said to be in serious negotiations to star opposite Harrison Ford for the new LucasFilm, Steven Spielberg movie tentatively dubbed “Indiana Jones: 4.”

While her role in the film has not been made public, rumor control has it that the Oscar winner may be the mysterious wife of the adventureous archeologist.

What we can tell you is the script is complete, Spielberg is directing, Shia LaBeouf is denying involvement, Paramount is distributing the project and shooting begins June 2007. The other news is a release date of May 22, 2008 has been set.

Blanchett is pretty much confirmed now from what I'm reading.  I do enjoy Cate Blanchett but if she is truly the female lead, I think it's a dumb idea. Why do they feel the need to give Ford an actress to play against that is about half his age?  Even if they didn't go with one of the previous Indy girls, they could of picked someone a bit closer to his age. Have to see how this plays out.

I would of liked to see Karen Allen come back as Marion myself.

LaBeouf Confirmed For Indy 4

Confirming rumors, Paramount Pictures officially announced that Shia LaBeouf has been cast in the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie. LaBeouf himself had downplayed previous reports that he was up for the role, calling them "rumors."

LaBeouf joins Harrison Ford, who returns as the title action hero, and Cate Blanchett, who was previously cast.

Production on Indiana Jones 4 is scheduled to begin in June in Los Angeles and will also film at undisclosed distant locations. Steven Spielberg will direct from a screenplay by David Koepp. Frank Marshall will produce the film, with George Lucas and Kathleen Kennedy serving as executive producers.

LaBeouf is soon to be seen in the DreamWorks Pictures productions Disturbia and Transformers.

"We are excited about bringing Shia into our Indy family," Spielberg said in a statement. "His talent has impressed not only his audiences throughout his young career, but the directors, producers and fellow actors who have worked with him in his television career and now his film career."

Commenting on his earlier denials, LaBeouf said in his own statement: "I was hoping the rumors were true, so I couldn't be more thrilled. To be cast in an Indiana Jones film is like grabbing the brass ring and holding on for the ride. I'll do my best to meet the high standards that Steven, George and Harrison have set, and I can't wait to take that giant step in front of the Indy cameras."

I read this on the Fox411.com website.

But of course, we were most interested in talking with George Lucas, the affable genius film director who occasionally graces us in New York with an appearance. Lucas is absolutely one of my favorite people, a lovely guy who seems unaffected by his enormous success.

Lucas is currently preparing "Indiana Jones 4" with Harrison Ford, Blanchett and Shia LaBoeuf. The latter plays Ford's son, which means his mother was possibly the character Karen Allen played in "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

"I can't say," Lucas said when I brought up Allen.

Lucas says that Sean Connery still hasn't signed on, but his character, Indy's dad, is in the script. Other than that, his lips are sealed.

"Steven thinks we can keep the whole thing a secret," Lucas told me. "I explained to him that it's impossible nowadays. We can't live like that."

So then, tell me more about "Indy 4," I suggested.

"Oh no," replied Lucas with a smile.

Here we go.... let the rumors begin. This is from Scifi.com

Indy 4 Plot Rumors Posted

C.H.U.D. reported a rumor that the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie begins with a fight between Indy and the Russians in Area 51 and deals with a story reminiscent of Erich Von Daniken's Chariots of the Gods? In that book, the author posits that aliens provided technology to ancient races.

Citing anonymous sources, the site said that the sequel, unofficially called Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods, will shoot near Los Angeles and in New Haven, Conn.; New Mexico; and Hawaii.

Shia LaBeouf's character, meanwhile, will be a '50s "greaser" type, with jeans, a leather jacket and a motorcycle, who will be thrown together with Indy. They will learn they're related in a pivotal action scene, the site reported.

The site added that the rumored details of the plot conform with those in the earlier Frank Darabont script, which ultimately wasn't used; it involves crystal skulls and aliens and takes place partly in South American temples.

Very cool. I don't think aliens is much of a stretch for this series. They've had eternal knights, and the wrath of God contained in the ark. It is a decidedly metaphysical series, so this works for me.

CHUD is reporting that Karen Allen will return to the Indiana Jones franchise for the series’ fourth installent.

Allen played Marion Ravenwood in the original “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and has been rumored to reprise the role in each of the last two installments of the Indy series. Speculation has it that Marion would return and be revealed as the mother of Indy’s son, played by Sabia LaBouf.

As of now, these are just rumors and nothing official has been confirmed by the studio or anyone officially involved with the production.

I have mixed feelings about this film. I figured from the start that if they did another film Indy would have to have a son so the franchise torch can be passed to the next generation. I personally think Ford is too old to pull Indy off effectively (at least as an action hero). Even though the main players are involved is no guarantee of a good film and I predict it will be the worst of the series. I'll see it of course but in general I don't look on this as good news.

It's nice to see some positive thinking for once. lol

Seriously, though, while I share your concerns, I prefer to wait until the movie is actually made and I get to see it before passing judgment. I'm not a huge fan of pointless sequels, but I respect Ford enough to know he's going to at least try to make this, his Indy Swan Song, the best one, or at least a good way to pass the torch.

Hopefully it won't be like when Kirk meets HIS son!

Don't get me wrong as I love the Indy series and saw each of them on release day but I'm not holding my breath. I think it will wind up being a "been there, done that" type of thing. Whenever there is a lack for originality TPTB always seem to go back to the well to what has worked for them in the past instead of reaching deep inside and doing something completely different. So, although I will go see the film I am looking forward to it with about the same anticipation as the upcoming Jurassic Park IV. All I can say is I hope they prove me wrong!

Hey Kevin.. how can you began to enjoy a movie if you go into it thinking it's going to be horrible or "been there, done that".  Don't you think having  pre-determined ideas about a film can only hurt your viewing of these films.

I never said it was the right way to approach a film and certainly not my normal mode of film viewing. I hope that Spielberg can indeed surprise me and just because I doubt that there is anything really valid to tell in the Indy story does not mean that I cannot be objective about it while I watch it.

I really had high hopes for Superman Returns and imho it was a big let down. Same with Batman Begins. Oh they had some cool special effects but the story and acting in both films was awful at times. It's sad when the animated shows can tell better stories than features imho! Now I suppose that both those films will have their fans who would object to my opinion and that's cool.

Now on the otherside I was very skeptical that the latest James Bond (Casino Royale) would be any good at all and boy was I proved wrong! Did my skepticism keep me from enjoying the film? Not at all! In fact I came out more satisfied because the movie was far better than I had hoped, and being the huge James Bond fan that I am,  I have to say it is in my top 5 of all Bond films ever made and maybe even in my top three.

So the answer is that I will attend the film with the best open mind I can and I hope it surpasses my expectations!

Superman Returns was not a big letdown to me, but I can see where it could be. I found it engaging and fun, but by no means was it a perfect flick. Batman Begins, OTOH was great, but the car chase scene where he drives over an old dilapidated church in his 5000 pound war wagon, er, Batmobile, and didn't crash through was just awful. I also liked that they didn't kill off the villains, at least not that I recall.

I Loved Casino Royale. Loved. It made me forget there was ever more than one Peirce Brosnan Bond flick.

Spidey 3, disappointment to me, but many people loved it.

So, yes, I see your point completely. Sequels, especially in the hands of Speilburg and Lucas, are never a suer thing, and more often than not, disappoint. Especially with the track record of these guys lately.

Maybe Clint Eastwood should direct Indy 4? Wonder how different THAT flick would be??

Eastwood would certainly make an "interesting" choice!  :unsure I'm not sure he could really get the comedic elements that an Indy film requires. So much of his stuff is so serious these days but I do think he has turned into a fine fine director.(http://209.85.12.231/2104/24/emo/Yes.gif)

Connery Not Doing Indy 4

Laying to rest months of rumors, Sean Connery said that he will not reprise the role of Henry Jones in the upcoming fourth Indiana Jones movie in a statement posted on the official Indiana Jones Web site. The 76-year-old actor said: "I get asked the question so often, I thought it best to make an announcement. I thought long and hard about it, and if anything could have pulled me out of retirement, it would have been an Indiana Jones film. I love working with [director] Steven [Spielberg] and [producer] George [Lucas], and it goes without saying that it is an honor to have Harrison [Ford] as my son. But in the end, retirement is just too damned much fun."

Connery, who played Indy's dad in 1998's Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, retired from acting in 2005. He had this advice for Ford, who turns 65 in July and whom he referred to as "junior": "Demand that the critters be digital, the cliffs be low and for goodness sake keep that whip by your side at all times in case you need to escape from the stunt coordinator! This is a remarkable cast, and I can only say, 'Break a leg, everyone.' I'll see you on May 22, 2008, at the theater!"

Indiana Jones 4 will co-star Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone and John Hurt. It's in preproduction.

It would of been nice to see him, but I'm guessing he wasn't essential to the plot since the script is written and they hadn't signed him up.  Probably would of been more like a cameo part.

They don't need him. The last one passed the torch from him to Indy, so in this one Indy is passing the torch to Shia. It would've been nice to see him, but it is definitely not necessary.

(Yes, I know he wasn't in the other ones. It was a generational thing. Bah, you know what I'm talking about. ;) )

Here is another picture of Shia LaBeouf (playing Indy’s son) and Poppa Jones (Harrison Ford) on the back of young Jones’ chopper. Now this picture Harrison looks his age.. and Shia doesn't look like himself at all.

I read somewhere that Karen Allen was going to be in this movie.. so that could make her the mother.

Not sure that's Shia in that picture.  Might be a stunt double or stand in.

Indiana Jones 4 Not Relying on CG
Source: New Haven Register
July 5, 2007

http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=21761

The Indiana Jones 4 production is wrapping up things in New Haven, Connecticut and the New Haven Register chatted with producer Frank Marshall about what to expect:

Marshall and Spielberg wanted to shoot the fourth "Indiana Jones" movie in the same style as the first three.

"Steven is very aware of the process and we're not cheating with CG (computer graphics) at all," Marshall said. "It keeps the B movie feel."

 LaBeouf This Generation’s Indy Jones?

http://www.sliceofscifi.com/2007/07/17/labeouf-this-generations-indy-jones/

Rumors in the Hollywood tabloids and on the Net are rampant that “Transformers” star Shia LaBeouf has signed an exclusive contract with Paramount that allows the studio to option the rising young star for up to three, possibly four, sequels to the Indiana Jones legacy.

Even though Harrison Ford is said to be doing most of his own stunts in this latest movie, now at 65, it is pretty obvious that he won’t be around for any other Indy movies after this fourth one, unless it is a brief cameo and I know that Paramount isn’t yet ready to let the franchise languish after this next film. So, the glaring choice is Shia as the man to continue the Jones saga.

“Indiana Jones 4″ is expected in theaters May 22, 2008 and besides Ford and LaBeouf (as Indy’s son), the movie will co-star Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent, with Karen Allen making a cameo appearance.

Not sure how I feel about that idea yet.  But I did like Shia a lot in "Transformers."  So I'll wait until we see the Indy movie next summer to decide.

No one has mentioned how UBER COOL Ray Winstone is ...

If you have not yet done so, watch a film from last year called "The Proposition".

It is a "western" from Australia, written by Nick Cave. It takes place during the Aboriginal War when Britain was trying to bring a semblance of law to the Outback.
One man, an outlaw, is given the task of killing his bigger brother, a major outlaw, in order to save his younger brother, not yet an outlaw. Ray Winston plays the British constable to chilling effect.

This is probably one of my Top 5 Movies of All Time. Now, they are using very heavy accents, so you may have to turn on the subtitles. Nothing is worse than watching this film with your wife, gushing your fanboy/film critic love for it all the way back to the car, then having her turn to you and say "I didn't understand it."

Yeah, that's Ray Winstone behind Karen.  Oh, and I think she has more of a part than one scene.

I like a few of those titles.  Funny thing is some of those titles I have heard in the past during the saga of getting this next movie to the screen.

OK, Back down, big guy. ;)

I'm not arguing your conclusions, I was just remarking that your evidence seemed a little thin.

For all any of us know, you could be perfectly on target. Since I have not seen the movie (it not being made yet ;) ) I can't refute your theory, although I'd like to think she has a bigger part than just a token presence. Lucas has proven that he really doesn't know what the fans would like to see, but Spielberg kinda does, so I really think she'll have a bigger part than "Hey, Indy, here's a punch in the mouth and your son."

From www.comingsoon.net   They recently chatted a little with Spielberg about the new Indy movie:

Earlier today, ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk to director Steven Spielberg about next summer's highly-anticipated Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, starring Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, Cate Blanchett, Ray Winstone, Karen Allen, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent, as well as his other projects in the works like Tintin and the Transformers sequel.

Before we met the remarkable and legendary director at the Amblin offices on the Universal Studios lot, we were shuttled to craft services near the set for lunch. While we weren't allowed on-set, which was somewhat disappointing but understandable, we did catch a glimpse of Harrison Ford in full costume grabbing a bite to eat as we left the area and that made not seeing the set quite alright. He appeared to be amazingly fit in his Indy outfit and we couldn't believe how great the 64-year-old looked as he quickly flashed his award-winning grin.

A few minutes later, we met Spielberg in a private screening room where he enthusiastically greeted us sporting his usual dressed-down-with-ball-cap look. Spielberg was gracious with his time and while he talked with us a few minutes, he was upfront about not wanting to answer any questions about the movie. Of course as journalists, we had to try and this is what we got:

Production is two days away from wrapping and the director raved about how great it was to have Ford back and how amazed he was that he did the majority of his own stunts. He said, looking back to the last film, which was 18 years ago, he couldn't tell the difference between the action star from then to now because he's still that good. He also told us that the Russians are the villains in the film and he hired Russian actors to ensure accuracy with their accents.

He went on to say that the fourth installment of the "Indiana Jones" franchise is shot on film and not digital, despite Lucas' encouragements of doing so because he is old-fashioned, and he added that if the people before him, who he considered great directors, did it on film then that's good enough for him.

Spielberg then talked about what a great addition Shia LaBeouf has been and how he's been doing all of his own stunts, too. Speaking of LaBeouf, Spielberg told us there are going to be multiple "Transformers" films that the hot young actor is signed on to do and that there's already a story for the second one, but production depends on the pending writer's strike.

In addition to Transformers and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the industrious director talked about Tintin, a project he's working on with Peter Jackson, based on the popular graphic novels by Belgian artist Hergé. He said that as of now there are only two directors with Jackson directing the first installment, himself directing the second movie, and if they don't hire another director, the two would co-direct the third. Jackson will shoot his movie in New Zealand and Spielberg will shoot in the States, and Spielberg said the two are very collaborative and that the film will be using motion-capture, which is still new to him.

As if meeting Spielberg in person and listening to him talk wasn't enough, he also signed limited edition "Indy 4" posters for all of us. It was a great afternoon for everyone, to say the least.

Indy wraps up production....

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull finally wrapped this week, but only after shooting at Chandler Field in Fresno, CA. Brodie Mash went over to field and watched on with excitement as Harrison Ford, Shia LaBeouf, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg (who was heard, but not seen) were shooting a scene that takes place at a circa 1950 Mexico City airport. You can see a photo of Harrison Ford in full Indy gear exiting a trailer to the right. Indy 4 has been in production since June 16th 2007.

A crew of 150 worked on the scene. In another take they painted "Branford" on the airport tower, likely to represent the airport in Branford Conneticut, where some scenes have already been shot. I'm guessing this sequence takes place early in the film after Dr. Jones leaves his teaching gig at Yale University in New Haven.

I love it.. it hasn't even come out in the theaters but it's already sold to TV...

Jones Goes to Showtime

When the as yet unreleased "Indiana Jones & the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" does make its television debut, there will be only one place you will be able to catch it first

The Showtime pay cable station out bid all contenders, including the big guy HBO for the opportunity to be the first to feature the Indy film for TV viewers. Of course, after the exclusivity is fulfilled, "Crystal Skull" will be available all across the TV dial.

This is the networks first big fish in its multi-deal renewal with Paramount pictures. Their current arrangement ended on December 1 and both were scrambling to get a new contract signed before the end of this year. "Crystal Skull" is the biggest result coming out of those negotiations.

Showtime has been reluctant of late to shell out the multi-millions required to get first run choice of major motion pictures, relying more on their hit series' such as "Dexter," "Weeds," "The Tudors," "Californication" and other top weeklys. They are cheaper to make and have shown great public following. But with "Crystal Skull" thrown in this package as an exclusive first run, Showtime heads of state bit and bit hard.

Even with this new multi-year deal for Showtime cable giant HBO and its sister stations still reign supreme at the top of the pay cable heap.

I have to admit this teaser trailer got me very excited after one viewing.. unlike the Star Trek one which took a few viewings before I got excited.

Ford Still Has It for All Age Groups

There was a time when Harrison Ford was the most successful actor in the world. He also was the most recognized face on the globe and held the record of being the highest paid, and busiest actor for a full decade.

Now Ford is 65 years old and many were wondering if he still had the chops to play such an aggressive action-hero like Indiana Jones, especially after 27 years of first wearing that famous hat or cracking his equally famous whip.

Well, if the new trailer for the George Lucas/Steven Spielberg creation "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" is any indication then Ford still has it in spades.

The film will be officially launched in theaters on May 22, 2008, but the trailer has been out for two weeks now making its rounds in theaters across the country and early indications are it is absolutely wowing the audiences who view it. They are actually cheering upon seeing the 65-year old Ford, as Indiana Jones, flying through the air and landing on trucks and fighting the bad guys as if time has stood still for the legendary actor and they are seeing him in his prime.

However, the real clue if this film will be a rousing success can be measured by the more younger, online savvy audience who have been following the trailer on the net. The result? Overwhelming enthusiasm from the younger set who weren't even a twinkle in their old man's eye when Ford first hit the silver screen as the famous action hero archeaologist back in 1981 in "Raiders of the Lost Ark." In fact, for many even their fathers weren't old enough to go to a theater without adult supervision. Most in that age group are calling this the most anticipated film for 2008.

"The trailer caught on like wildfire, around the world, in all mediums," said Gerry Rich, Paramount's president of worldwide marketing. "From 8 to 80. The response has been sensational and it shows what technology can do when you have material that is so appealing to audiences."

While Paramount is happy that its older audiences are happy to see another Indy film, what thrills the studio most however is its prime ticket-buying demographic, the younger viewers, who are also thrilled and ready to spend money to see it. What also makes studio execs smile is that if this movie does as well as expected with younger moviegoers it can justify continuing the Jones saga with actor Shia LeBeouf, who can go on with the series for a new generation as the son of Indiana Jones, following in the adventureous footsteps of his legendary father. This explains their aggressive online campaign. Paramount says that there has been a record 4.1 million views on the Yahoo movie site in the first week of the trailer's release and 2.6 million on the official IndianaJones.com site, according to a report in Yahoo News. This record setter is the most online hits ever for the studio's new trailer release.

"It looks to be THE highly anticipated movie of the summer," said Mark Mazrimas, marketing manager for independent theater chain Classic Cinemas. However, "this hasn't been on the screen for so long, [it] is capturing the youth."

Indy 4, Dark Knight will run long

Better make sure you get the super-sized soda and popcorn as you head into Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and The Dark Knight this summer.  According to reports on Dark Horizons, both summer blockbusters will have long running times.

The latest installment of the Indiana Jones series is reported to run 140 minutes by Hollywood Elsewhere and confirmed by composer John Williams.  Williams said his working print of the film took seven cases.  Each case held about 20 minutes of the movie.

Test screenings for Indy 4 are being kept under tight wraps.  There has reportedly been one test screening of the film.  Indy 4 will play for studio execs next week and then debut at Cannes.

Good story on Harrison Ford and a new picture....

Harrison Ford is a portrait of rugged individualism
By Anthony Breznican, USA TODAY
SANTA MONICA, Calif. — Indiana Jones always finds what he's looking for in isolated, faraway places. The same could be said of Harrison Ford.

The leading man of Star Wars, The Fugitive, Witness and Air Force One— and of course Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, coming May 22 — is happiest in the private 800-acre woodlands around his Wyoming home or soaring over the American landscape in one of his many private aircraft.

WALKING IN HIS SHOES: Harrison Ford's career path in pictures
SEE THE TRAILER: An early heads-up on 'Crystal Skull'
ACTING BREAKTHROUGH: Writing was on the wall with 'American Graffiti'

But he also sees the pleasure in a simple California day hike. Today, he's tackling the trailways of Temescal Canyon, a public park tucked into the oceanside mountains of the Pacific Palisades just outside Santa Monica.

In a grassy area at the start of the trailhead, the 65-year-old actor hops down with ease after posing for photographs atop a massive tree trunk. He's eager to get into the steep hike, though he jokes: "There'd better be a bar and restaurant at the end."

No such luck. The trail is a loop that winds up into rolling mountains, lush at this time of year because of recent rains. Passing around a hairpin turn on the trail, Ford mentions he hasn't seen Crystal Skull in its finished form, just the dailies during shooting. But he's sure he'll see it before it premieres at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18.

Many of the plotlines of Crystal Skull are still secret, but Ford says the movie will try to give new perspectives on his globe-trotting, fist-fighting archaeologist. Jones happens to be among Ford's favorite characters, and he has put his own curmudgeonly rogue qualities into him.

"He's a guy who is pretty clear from the beginning," Ford says. "He has not changed so much between films. But we've learned more about him, through various plot devices, such as the introduction of his father. And we'll learn something more about him in this film. I think it's required. If you're going to bring back a character, you'll have to supply the audience with something more and different.

"The adventure is very, very important. But it's interesting to discover a facet of the character that perhaps you hadn't explored before."

One of those things is age, which is apt, considering some wonder whether the actor is getting too up in years to play the action hero.

"I think it's an interesting element to take advantage of," Ford says. "Clearly, it's another challenge that he faces."

Ford's challenge of the moment is scaling a rocky slope beneath low branches. As he navigates the terrain, it's easy to imagine a bit of Indiana Jones swagger seeping into Ford's mild manner. But he says it doesn't work that way.

"My actual true life has dynamics to it that are as interesting to me as Indiana Jones' life," he says. "It's not so enmeshed in fantasy."

Keep acting, keep smiling

It has been almost 20 years since he last played Jones in 1989's The Last Crusade and nearly 27 years since he first played the character in 1981's Raiders of the Lost Ark. But getting back was "really easy," he says. "It's as though you put on that hat, the leather jacket, the bag, the whip, the gun — or even the schoolteacher's suit — and it comes back to you."

As he ascends the hills, assorted day-hikers come stomping down from the trail ahead, crashing through the surrounding brush. Stunned smiles appear when they realize whom they've just come face to face with, and Ford grins and says hello to each one, breaking stride only to let them pass.

One man asks if he's having a good hike or a great hike.

"Great hike," Ford says, and the man hands him a card that reads: KEEP SMILING. Ford gives the stranger his signature cocked grin and pockets the card.

He regards being a screen icon with the matter-of-fact attitude of a blue-collar worker. "It's my job," he says. "I think it's the best job in the world. Where else can you go to play with such big toys?"

His own kids were never too dazzled that their old man got to, say, fly spaceships in Star Wars or explore a futuristic L.A. in Blade Runner. "I think they grew up in the store, disabused of the potential for anything more than the understanding that it's the job I do."

His four children (from two marriages that ended in divorce) are grown now, and he has grandchildren, ages 14 and 7. "They know me as Grandpa first," he says. "They know the reality of the business I'm in." Even from a very young age, "they knew Chewbacca was a fiction."

Ford is back to being a dad to 7-year-old Liam, the son of his partner, Calista Flockhart. The Indiana Jones movies can be frightening for children (Temple of Doom helped initiate the PG-13 rating), and Ford says Liam hasn't seen them yet.

Ford is looking forward to that someday, though. "The pleasure of making something is always sharing it, especially with people who are close to you."

No fences for Ford

The path levels out along a bluff, a thin waterfall spills down its face. At the base, a small wooden bridge traverses a wide, rippling pool. Ford rests his elbows on the bridge railing and watches the waterfall in silence for a few moments. "There are tons of these," Ford says. "When you fly around here, you see so much more open land. There are waterfalls everywhere."

Piloting his own airplanes is a special passion for the star, and he maintains several aircraft at a hangar in Santa Monica. Flying smaller aircraft is something special. "A commercial airliner is so unlike flying. You're in a huge machine, insulated against the aerodynamic effects, and you're at 35,000 feet looking out. You don't have the same kind of emotional contact of what's happening around you."

After a while, he pushes off the railing and looks up the steeply ascending path. "Carry on?" he asks.

His fondness for wilderness came at an early age. A Boy Scout growing up in and around Chicago, he was often sent for week-long visits to farms and campsites.

He lives mainly in Los Angeles these days, to be close to his family. But it's clear he has a deep affection for his woodland home in Jackson, Wyo.

"It was at one time a working cattle ranch, but when I bought it 20-some-odd years ago, the first thing I did was sling the cattle off it and let it go back to the natural environment. It took three or four years for the grasslands to come back and the streams to clear up. Now the cattle have been replaced largely by elk, who use the same food source — grass. And they're much easier on the environment."

'Critters and birds' abound

As for the 800 acres that surround the home: "It's mostly cottonwood trees and river bottom, so it's laced with spring creeks, coyotes and foxes and deer, all kinds of small critters and birds."

After reaching a crest where the full slopes of the canyon come into view, Ford starts back down the mountainside, passing a woman on a narrow section. He says a polite "Hello" and then grumbles, "Nice talking to ya" when she speed-walks by, oblivious.

At this point in his career and with $3.1 billion in box-office revenue, the actor doesn't need to prove anything anymore. But he also hasn't been very prolific lately. He has made only two movies in six years: the crime comedy Hollywood Homicide and the techno-thriller Firewall.

Neither was well-regarded. "But they were adventures," Ford says, referring to the process rather than the story lines. "Once in a while, you take shots on things, and it doesn't work out. I don't think either of them ... well, you might well accuse Hollywood Homicide of a certain lack of ambition. But I don't think Firewall suffers from a lack of ambition. It just suffers from failure to get itself together and be as interesting as it might have been."

After the new Indiana Jones movie, he has a role in the ensemble film Crossing Over (opening Aug. 22) as an immigration agent who tries to help a woman who has crossed the border illegally be reunited with her child.

It's an experiment for Ford, dabbling in lower-budget, art-house fare. "I wanted to do a film where I didn't take responsibility for the screenplay, where I didn't take responsibility for the film, and just played a role in an ensemble."

He's not a movie buff, and his tastes have trended toward pop culture and mass entertainment. "What if we made art and nobody came? That'd be the (pits)," he says with a laugh. "Art can be very self-satisfying, very indulgent."

Some actors of his stature simply decide not to do it anymore. Sean Connery, 77, who played Jones' father in The Last Crusade, said he wouldn't return for Indy IV because he had given up acting.

Does Ford ever think of retiring? "Kick back and work for Scotland's freedom?" Ford jokes, referring to Connery's pet cause of his homeland breaking from the United Kingdom to be an independent nation. "I don't think I'll make that same choice. But sure. I think I might decide to do other things, but I think it's a ways down the line.

"I'm still having as much fun and taking as much pleasure, and I'm as intellectually stimulated by the process, as I ever was."

The actor doesn't rule out working on a film with Flockhart, either, though he doesn't seem eager to mix business with his personal life. "We might do that, but it's not something we're actively seeking."

He also might consider a fifth installment of Indiana Jones, though he hopes it wouldn't take 20 years to pull together.

On the way back down the trail, Ford seems to soften his stance about the differences between his own personality and that of his most famous character: "I think I'm as curious as he is, but much less an academic. I'm less likely to get myself into dramatic situations."

No fistfights with Nazis, then? "No, I stay away from fistfights," he says, laughing. "Anytime I've been in one, I've broken a bone in my hand or finger."

Fans love actors because they project on them their admiration for the on-screen fantasy. Ford says it's just a reach, a hope that there is some measure of reality to the fiction they see at the theater.

In summer 2001, a Boy Scout vanished overnight in Yellowstone National Park. Ford, like many local pilots, volunteered his services. He happened to find the boy while patrolling the Wyoming wilderness in his helicopter, and the incident made headlines — not because it was especially dramatic, but because Ford was the rescuer.

As the Temescal Canyon path winds down to flat land under the cool cover of towering trees, the actor grimaces at the memory. He says it was just a good deed and hardly matinee-style theatrics. "What annoyed me about it all was that I'd pick somebody up off the mountain one day, and two days later they'd be on Good Morning America," Ford says. "I thought, 'It doesn't give credit to all the other people involved.' "

He shakes his head: "Suddenly, I'm swanning around as some kind of (expletive) hero."

You know, I actually liked Hollywood Homicide. It reminded me of all the people I knew in LA and how they were constantly trying to "make it" instead of just doing what they were good at and being happy. Object lesson there, I think.

New "Indiana" Synopsis
By Garth FranklinMonday, April 21st 2008 12:45am

The official synopsis - some SPOILERS ahead:

"This newest adventure begins in the desert Southwest in 1957 - the height of the Cold War. Indy and his sidekick Mac (Ray Winstone) have barely escaped a close scrape with nefarious Soviet agents on a remote airfield.

Now, Professor Jones has returned home to Marshall College - only to find things have gone from bad to worse. His close friend and dean of the college (Jim Broadbent) explains that Indy's recent activities have made him the object of suspicion, and that the government has put pressure on the university to fire him.

On his way out of town, Indiana meets rebellious young Mutt (Shia LaBeouf), who carries both a grudge and a proposition for the adventurous archaeologist: If he'll help Mutt on a mission with deeply personal stakes, Indy could very well make one of the most spectacular archaeological finds in history - the Crystal Skull of Akator, a legendary object of fascination, superstition and fear.

But as Indy and Mutt set out for the most remote corners of Peru - a land of ancient tombs, forgotten explorers and a rumored city of gold - they quickly realize they are not alone in their search. The Soviet agents are also hot on the trail of the Crystal Skull.

Chief among them is icy cold, devastatingly beautiful Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett), whose elite military unit is scouring the globe for the eerie Crystal Skull, which they believe can help the Soviets dominate the world ... if they can unlock its secrets.

Indy and Mutt must find a way to evade the ruthless Soviets, follow an impenetrable trail of mystery, grapple with enemies and friends of questionable motives, and, above all, stop the powerful Crystal Skull from falling into the deadliest of hands."

Indy 4 on DVD/Blu-ray

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" will come to DVD and Blu-ray disc on October 14, according Paramount Pictures announced Tuesday.

"Crystal Skull" starred Harrison Ford as the aging adventurer/archaeologist Indiana Jones, the role he made famous in 1981 with the first of now four Indy films. This latest was done after a 19-year hiatus from the character and was again directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by creator George Lucas. The film also reunited Ford with his first female star Karen Allen (Marion Ravenwood). It also featured Shia LaBeouf as the son of Indy and Marion, Cate Blanchette, John Hurt, Jim Broadbent and Ray Winstone.

"Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull" will be available on a single-disc DVD with only the film or in two-disc DVD and Blu-ray sets. Extras provided in the two-disc sets will include a segment on how the new movie evolved after nearly a 20-year absence, a production diary with highlights from the various location shoots in New Mexico, Connecticut and Hawaii, segments on makeup, visual effects and the a look at the famed real crystal skulls located in different regions of the globe. A DVD boxed set with all four movies also will also be available, however, neither Paramount Pictures or Lucasfilm have announced when the first three Indy films will be released on Blu-ray.

Since "Crystal Skull" was a box office success ($770 million internationally), Lucas, Spielberg and Ford are already talking a fifth film for the franchise, with Ford donning the hat and cracking the whip for yet another adventure.

I'm exhausted with doing that mate. Its like with the casino royale DVD, its terrible first edition DVD.
