If you are a Star Wars fan than you guys have heard about his movie... well just in case you haven't here is a synopsis
"Fanboys is a comedy about friends, fans and delusions of grandeur. Fanboys takes place in the fall of 1998, a time when everything was pure and Star Wars ruled the world once again. We follow four life-long best friends who travel cross-country in an attempt to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch. Their mission is to see Star Wars Episode I early when they discover one of the young men in their group is diagnosed with terminal cancer and will not live long enough to see the film in theaters the following May. This film expresses what it means to care about something so truly that you would do anything for it… what it means to be a fan. This is a film for the fans, made by the fans. "
You can check out the trailer here... it's hilarious (just a note they do make fun of Star Trek fan's)

They had a 4 part interview with the director on the force Cast podcast. Does sound like a really interesting movie, will go see it if it shows up in the theatres here in Canada, if not then will probably get the DVD.
Now that looks funny, and I bet its quite touching too. Like the dig at Trekkies, an homage to the them and us scenario.
Saw the trailer and I must say that I really want to see this movie....is this coming to theaters? Is it direct to DVD? ANyone
Yes, there isn't much info on it but I heard rumors that it is suppose to be out early next year. :starwars:
Sounds like a lot of fun! :dstar
I heard an interview with the director of that film on The Force Cast. Sounds like a touching film.
Lucas Gives Fanboys F/X Help
Chris Marquette, who co-stars in the upcoming Star Wars-themed comedy Fanboys, told SCI FI Wire that the movie has been delayed to add a cameo with Kevin Smith and sound effects from the Star Wars films, which were authorized by George Lucas himself after he saw an early cut and approved. The homage to Star Wars fans now has an Aug. 17 release date.
"They showed it to so many people involved in Star Wars that we've gone back several times with additional scenes," Marquette said in an interview while promoting his latest film, The Invisible. "Like, Kevin Smith had seen it, and [he] came in and was like, 'Oh, man. I love it.' So they let him write and direct one of his own scenes in it. So they added that in." Smith is a well-known fan of Star Wars, having included allusions to the franchise in his films for years.
As for Star Wars creator Lucas, Marquette said that the post-production process was extended to incorporate new sound and special effects with the blessing of Lucas himself. (Principal photography was completed last year.) "George Lucas saw it and loved it and gave us all the sound effects for the original Star Wars movie," Marquette said. "So they went back in and put in all these sound effects and everything and some cool special effects. It's like everybody's that seen it that's sort of loved it has attached themselves in a way to make the movie better."
In Fanboys, Marquette plays one of four guys who drive cross-country to Lucas' Skywalker Ranch to fulfill a friend's dying wish to see an advance screening of Star Wars: Episode Iâ€"The Phantom Menace. "It's cool," Marquette said. "It's like a wacky comedy that's got a really nice undertone of, like, friendship. It's like a road-trip movie. It's really nice, though. It was me, and they hired three other guys who are just insanely talented and really funny. So they just let us [have] sort of like a free-for-all improv, in a way."
This just in from director Kyle Newman.
"Fanboys has been delayed. As a Star Wars fan, I am devastated. Fanboys is the love letter to the greatest movie franchise of all time. And this year marks the 30th Anniversary. I wanted the film to be my gift back to Star Wars and to the fan community. But ultimately the shift in release will be a good thing for the movie. We made Fanboys for under five million dollars. And the studio has given us the go-ahead to do the things to it that we couldnt do with our initial limited schedule and budget. There are one or two hilarious things that I wanted to shoot and they are giving me the funds to do it. Which is great!!! As a filmmaker, it's not often someone says -- here's more money - what else do you want to do? But that's the situation we are in. Unfortunately, I dont get the actors back together for four months! (The one drawback to having such a hot young cast at the top of their game.) But rest assured fans won't escape Fanboys this year. We kick it off with our presence at Celebration IV in a big way (sneak-peaking scenes, releasing our prequel comic book and teaser poster)... then we will heat things up at the San Diego Comic-Con in July. And from there we just keep building toward January. I am so excited to unleash this movie. It's going to be huge!"
Believe me Kyle, we're excited too! Let's all hope this is the final delay so we can finally see this film!
Wow, I had forgotten all about this flick. This sounds cool, and I can't wait to see stuff on it at ComiCon.
Writer Allays Fanboys Rumors
Ernest Cline, co-writer of the much-delayed Star Wars-themed Fanboys, told fans on his official blog not to believe rumors about the movie's status and that the movie may appear in theaters as early as March.
"The production of Fanboys has also run into its share of hiccups," Cline wrote. "There have been several rounds of reshoots and delays. And this week, rumors have begun to fly across the Interweb about the possibility of changes being made to the movie in post-production. And the fans who have been anxiously waiting to see it for so long are understandably concerned."
The rumors include one that producers are considering watering down the movie's main storyline, in which a group of friends in the early 1990s travel with a friend who has been diagnosed with cancer to try to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and steal a print of Star Wars: Episode I. The rumors say that preview screenings may lead the producers to eliminate the cancer storyline.
"Some of these rumors are true, some are false, and others are just plain loco," Cline said in reaction. "Nothing is set in stone at this point, so I can't weigh in on the subject just yet. What I can tell you is that everyone who has worked on Fanboys is extremely proud of it, and we can't wait for it to arrive in theaters. When it does, I know that our target audience is going to love it."
The movie was delayed several times before settling on a Jan. 18 release date. But as that date approached, the Weinstein Co. pulled the movie from its schedule.
"Now we're hearing that the current plan is to release Fanboys this coming March," Cline wrote. "But that could change again. To quote Master Yoda, 'Always in motion is the future.' I promise to keep you posted."
There must be something seriously wrong with this movie. It's been worked on for literally years now. I'm starting to wonder if we will ever see it. Direct to DVD or internet download is my advice. Save those theater and film costs.
Yeah it could have been out a year ago and it would have been great. I've seen about 1/3 of the movie and it was fantastic. Then the big company gets wind of it and say.. hmmm we can make some money with this little film so they managed to take over and throw more money at it.. which I'm sure at the time the producers were happy because more money meant better effects. But I bet they are regretting there decision now. I think will see it.. some day in some form.
I hope they don't change the story.. that's the heart of the movie.
Usually movies that get constantly rescheduled and taken back for rework, usually end up suffering in the end. If the studios tinker to much with the main premise of the movie, could get a real uneven movie in the end. Hopefully this movie will be able to come out, but I suspect any more delys, and it will be a direct to DVD movie some day.
Well let's hope the re-write rumors are just that. I was listening to last weeks ForceCast and I have to agree with those guys....if you rewrite the storyline to exclude the cancer then you take the "heart" outta the movie and make it just another movie about looney Star Wars fans.
This is truly sad news.. if true..
Has "Fanboys" Killed Its Own Buzz?
Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Staff Journalist)
Have too many cooks spoiled the stew? That would appear to be the case for the much-delayed release of "Fanboys," once considered one of the most intriguing films of 2007. The movie has been delayed, retooled and re-shot to the point that its lost a lot of its geek street cred and may be one of the biggest disappointments of 2008.
According to Dark Horizons, the Weinstein Company has had extensive re-shoots of the film done. The story, which was set to follow a group of friends on their journey to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch and steal a copy of "Star Wars: Episode I" for a dying friend to see, has been significantly altered according to reports. The entire plotline about one of the friends having cancer, leading to the need to steal the print of the film so he can see it before he passes away has been dropped entirely.
Weinstein Company is reported to have spent over $2 million to re-shoot and re-edit the film because the cancer plotline wasn't going over well with test audiences. The studio took away control of the project from director Kyle Newman and brought in "Without a Paddle" director Steve Brill to re-shoot and re-edit the film. Newman has been removed from the project entirely according to reports.
Both versions of the film have been shown to test audiences, according to Cinematical, with the new version not scoring much higher with test audiences than the original. But reports have it that Weinstein is determined to release its new version in the theaters to justify the extra expense for the film.
The news has not set well with the fans who were anticipating this film. And, to make matters worse, there is still no official word out yet on if or when "Fanboys" will make it to the big-screen.
Now it would appear that those of us wanting to see the original version will have to wait and hope that it will be seen as a part of any special edition on DVD.
Last I had heard I thought this was a direct to DVD sales type thing. I didn't know it was going to be released to theaters. I probably wouldn't go see it anyway. I might rent it once it comes to DVD if my local video store would even carry it.
Kevin
It was meant for theaters. Sad news. This movie really needed to come out a couple years after the whole prequel thing started. I feel sorry for those that must of worked hard on it.
Two version of "Fanboys" on DVD...But What About the Theatrical Release?
Written by: Michael Hickerson (SoSF Staff Journalist)
The on-going saga of "Fanboys" continued this week when the Weinstein Company announced that it would release both versions of the film on DVD. However, the long-awaited film still hasn't seen the light of day at the box-office, despite numerous delays and an enforced re-shoot by the Weinstein Company.
The film was initially produced by Kevin Spacey's Trigger Street and featured a slate of up and coming young actors including Kirsten Bell, Seth Rogan and Jay Barachul. The initial script made the Hollywood blacklist as one of the top 40 projects in town when it began shooting.
"Fanboys" was initally set to be a story of a road-trip undertaken by several friends to break into the Skywalker Ranch and let a dying friend see a cut of "The Phantom Menance." The initial shoot finished and footage was taken to several fan conventions where it met with overwhelming enthusiasm. Reports and word of mouth began to circulate on-line, including several reports here at Slice of SciFi, generating buzz and anticipation for the film.
Everything appeared to be lining up for release last year when the Weinstein Company picked up the movie for distribution.
And that's where things started to go wrong for "Fanboys." Studio exec Harvey Weinstein was discouraged by initial test screenings of the film and ordered extensive reshoots of the film, including the dropping of the friend dying of cancer storyline.
Producer Kevin Mann told the Hollywood Reporter, "The original reason we wanted to get involved with this script was because it was a comedy with heart. In my opinion, when the cancer was taken out, the heart went with it."
Mann and director Kyle Newman refused to take part in the reshoots, leading Weinstein to hire another, outside director to complete the vision of the film he wanted. Initial test screenings of the film didn't generate higher audience appreciation figures and in the meantime, the Weinstein Company had a bigger problem on their hands....
"Star Wars" fans
The rabid fan community for George Lucas' "galaxy far, far away" caught wind of the re-writes and re-shoots and began a grassroots campaign to restore "Fanboys" to its original vision. Fan group the 501st created a web-site lampooning Weinstein, referring to him as Darth Harvey and letting fans know of the on-going news. The group had planned a bi-coastal protest for the opening of Weinstein Company's "Superhero Movie" this weekend. That news more than anything else may have caught Weinstein's attention and led to the news that "Fanboys" will hit DVD with both version.
"This is more about avoiding picket lines at 'Superhero' than it was about making a decision about the release of our movie," said Mann.
But the question still remains–which version will the studio release in theaters?
"Harvey feels it's hard to market, especially with this cast," an insider at Weinstein told The Hollywood Reporter. "He wants to market to a more teen audience. The filmmakers wanted a dramedy along the vein of the popular 1986 Rob Reiner flick 'Stand by Me.' "
Some speculate that given that Weinstein poured $2 million into the re-shoot that is the version that will be seen in theaters. Others, including Ain't It Cool News' Quint, speculate that there could be two versions released theatrically. One to appeal to the teen audience that Weinstein wants with a PG-13 rating and an R-rated original version to appease the grass-roots fan who want to see the original version.
As of now, the only news is that fans will get both versions on DVD, though no word yet on if this will be a two-disc set or the studio will double-dip and release each version separately.
A release date for "Fanboys" has yet to be determined.
It's a freakin' shame that distribution companies can screw up a simple but great film idea. A film about Star Wars fans is going to appeal primarily to Star Wars fans; you can't 'jazz it up' to broaden its appeal without breaking it.
In their attempt to broaden their audience, these idiots are going to end up shrinking it.
well they released another trailer for this movie.. they say it's coming out Feb 6th of 2009. but as wel know they was suppose to come out many years ago. I think I like the first trailer better.. let's hope this movie will finally see the light of day.

Here's another story about this film...
Will this movie every come out???
Video Chronicles Fanboys Battle
Reelz has posted a video about the battle to preserve Fanboys, the Star Wars-themed comedy film, in its original form.
The Weinstein Co. originally wanted to eliminate plot elements dealing with a character's cancer from the movie, about a group of friends in 1998 who try to break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch to steal a pre-release copy of Star Wars: Episode I--The Phantom Menace. The proposed change drew fan protests, leading Weinstein Co. to back down.
Fanboys is slated for release on Feb. 6, 2009.

I believe it when I'm holding my movie ticket or more likely Netflix rental.
Seriously, this has been kicking around for so long now, I have almost lost interest in the whole thing.
I'd have to agree. Unless I hear some really compelling reviews of this, I don't think I'll be going to see it.
The shame is that it was a great idea - about 5 years ago when the prequels were in full swing. Now I think it might seem dated.

Surprised that a word search for Fan boys and Fanboys did not pop up any finds! I am pretty sure Rico has talked about it in his pods. Anyway, there was a 5 min review today on NPR movies and this on Rotten Tomatoes

The year is... In this riotous new road movie from producer Kevin Spacey, a group of friends who are avid Star Wars fans travel west to see the Holly Grail of all sci-fi movies, Star Wars: Episode I. The year is 1999 and for these death star dorks, the Star Wars films are more than just movies; they are a way of life. So, after one of the group takes sick it is nothing short of a moral imperative that the friends break into George Lucas' Skywalker Ranchi to watch the seminal sci-fi picture together before its release. Enlisting the help of an estranged friend, who has traded in his Darth Vader mask for a proper day job, the adventure lays way to some extremely funny situations, including an outrageous brawl with some hard-core Trekkies."
SPOILER ALERT DO NOT READ NEXT LINE
There are a number of cameos in this one, include SH*TN#@, and others.
Only 26 reviews over there so far so few have seen it yet. Will there be viewers in this crowd? BTW, if by any chance you are not familiar with Rotten Tomatoes, it is a fantastic site for getting both the professional (ie, newspaper critics) and non-professional (us) reviews.

Today's Forcecast is direct from the Chicago preview. Full of interviews and fiorst impressions. The movie seems like fun. If it comes to Toronto I may go see it.
After hearing Dave Filloni on the ForceCast recently I am looking forward to hopefully seeing this as well.
I'm going to try and see it this weekend.. can't wait.
Doesn't even open in Oregon. Booooo. Not that I'm surprised, they never release much here anyway.

Fanboys got huge negative reviews by critics in Oregon. One of the idiot reviewer called us Trekkers....srsly?!?! (Said it would offend us if we were called Trekkies. I'M OFFENDED JERK!) Said it lacked humor, that the "Real life" stuff made it seem like the whole "lets break into Lucas Ranch" storyline was well within reason. (not a compliment) Also said that the cameos were unneeded and simply a waste of talent.
Not that I listen to them often, but in this case I wanted to because I cannot see Fanboys myself. Why they never show stuff like this in Oregon I will never know....Its annoyingly hard to sit and wait for months for this movie to come out. By the time it comes anywhere close to my area, the DVD will be out.
Yes, a tad rant. Forgive me. I can't wait to see this movie. :) :)

It's playing here in Phoenix. I may try and see it.
It looks like it will open in Canada in April
Hello from Malaysia! I took a quick look but didn't see this mentioned; looks good :) youtube(dot)com/watch?v=ntzYG9t5zi0 .... Chris (problems just posting link)
I Merged the topic. :)
Gee, do I feel foolish :) There's no dates shown in the mobile version of the site, but looks like this has been discussed for quite a long time! I really am a SF geek guy... really I am! :) Guess I just missed this one; so how did it turn out? (film critic's opinions aside)
Comes out next week, on May 19th on DVD.
OHH! I still want to see this.
Finally saw this movie. It was just ok. Fairly ordinary and the Trek bashing gets a bit old. But it did have some fun moments.
I enjoyed it, at least I didn't lose interest in the middle like I do with most movies these days. I do wonder about what it could have been without all the greed and studio interference, I have a feeling the whole thing would have felt more real and generally alot more fun.
Resurrecting an old thread ftw?...
Finally got to rent this movie and I have to say...it was entirely over-hyped. Although I agree, its a fan tribute to Star Wars, it just felt...ehh. The constant bashing on Trekkies was a bit much. I know there isn't a lot of love between the two, I happen to be a fan of both Star Wars and Trek. So it just felt like nonsense. Also, the constant sexual references was getting very old very fast.
Overall, it was mildly entertaining. I laughed once or twice, but not nearly as much as I would have liked. I felt this movie could have been so much more, but it didn't deliver. One good thing is, I was interested the entire time, rather than wishing it was over half-way through.
6/10 stars. Movie is good to watch once and then never again. Sadly, that's how it goes.

I liked the movie and enjoyed the bashing because it wasn't that far from things I have seen when opposing camps get together sometimes. I watched the whole thing and didn't regret it for a minute. I also like how they ended it.
I was left pretty happy. It wasn't Free Enterprise, but a good try.
