Sunday, March 9th marks the beginning of a new era of exploration.
A show that's sure to stretch your imagination with high hopes and dazzling CGI effects.
No, it's not Firefly - let's hope it fairs better.

Loved the original Cosmos, Carl Sagan was my childhood hero.
I loved the older series as well. These are some big shoes to fill. I really like DeGrasse-Tyson, but always thought Michio Kaku would be a better fit for this show. At any rate, I will not miss an episode
The new Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey looks to have a different list of episode titles than the original.
It's wiki page only lists the first three so far.

I will be watching!
Can't wait! Hopefully Hulu will have it for the disconnected among us.

Hm, I agree Kaku would be a great choice for this show, he's amazing...but I think NDG has a better presence on TV, great voice and all. I remember Cosmos when I was a kid, had no idea what was going on but it all sounded very important.

I am sure I will like it. This may sound strange, but NDG has a very informal, irreverent, and more humorous approach - which I like - but seems like it might be at out of sync with this old man's expectations for Carl Sagan's successor. :)

I agree with you in some of this, but I think it's NDG's passion for science and passion for getting this project after years of fighting for it that will make it something that more than the geeks can enjoy. I think he's a scientist that speaks better to the expectations of this generation and I honestly think that Carl's presentation style wouldn't play well to the students of today.
30 years ago, there was more a quest of knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Nowadays, it's all about inspiring passion to convince people that the knowledge is worth the time they invest into the show.
Kind of depends on the audience they get to watch. Hopefully some younger folks will tune in and not just us who recall the Sagan show so fondly.
Yes you are both right about that. I'll watch at any rate. Getting younger people inspired takes someone who can grab their attention and speak to them.
On a side note - my brother (older than me) who was a Physics major at his school (while these were originally aired) used to sniff at my young enthusiam and turn up his nose at 'pop-science'. :)
That reminds me, I have to tease him about that..and remember that when I 'judge' NDG.
Pretty good interview of Niel deGrasse Tyson by Bill Moyer.
Carl Sagan and a look ahead at the new Cosmos is discussed.

So what is the verdict?
Loved it, so cool!
The opening should be used on the next Trek TV series.
The online reviews are pretty much saying the same thing as Zap2it.

I didn't like it at all ....boring and the music wasn't very good like the original very disappointed. The host didn't draw me in or peak my interest, that's my opinion.
I found it to be visually very stunning, and I liked NDG in the role more that I thought I would. What I didn't like - so far - was the historic animation. They seem to be taking a more charged position then Sagan did in the original series...CtOS
I concur it all looked good on my huge hi-def TV and the animation was a turn off for me. Hopefully it'll be better next week.
I really enjoyed it. Neil really sold it for me in the conclusion
Now that I have a minute, I'll add to my thoughts. I enjoyed the program over all, but the history segment made me pause. Not in a bad way, but in a way that had me impressed that they covered the subject as they did. These are all historical facts, but in today's era, we tend to sanitize history for the most part. We gloss over much of the bad in favor of promoting the successes.
Those segments reminded me of the struggles that science faced and had my daughter asking questions about what else happened in the world that led to today on a science level. That led to a conversation between her and her mother about Columbus, Isabella, and that segment of history.
What a beautiful start to this series. I can only hope it inflames a passion for science among some youngsters. We need Americans engaged in the sciences if we are going to move forward in this country.
I liked it quite a bit too. I was fine with the animation and historical parts. Looking forward to more.
The new Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey is great but it lacks a certain je ne sais quoi of the original.
I'm re-watching the original and have noticed the new episodes often mirror Cosmos: A Personal Voyage.
Last night's 'The Immortals" paled to the original's 'The Persistence of Memory'. The graphics of the new are far superior, both hosts hit on the same points, but Carl Sagan gets points for being more philosophical... not that he just talked faster :)
Looking forward to the last two Cosmos episodes.
I know my kids prefer the newer one, but that is no surprise. I am working my way through these, and haven't been watching them as they air.
I don't like the new cosmos ... i'm not sure if its getting stellar ratings.

What don't you like about it? I find it to be a great show to watch with my kids, they love the heck out of it.

I agree. My daughter loves this show and loves looking up the stuff in the show later. We can't watch it without her. I have no problems with it and I can say that it plays 100% better than the first one in terms of keeping my daughter's interests. She loves science and the new show, but only tolerates the old show because it has science in it.
Yes, I think that this show is specifically aimed at the young to spark an interest in science, and not for us old fogeys who were around when the first one was played. It works well for both age groups, but my 7 year old son is obsessed with it. I love it. We need more future scientists. That's why I married one. ;)
I didn't like the first episode, but I have warmed up a bit since. I think Sagan's show was aimed at an older laity audience - while the new one is targeted to a bit of a younger crowd. They need more flash to make a show like this fly - and if it gets any young person interested in science, it has done a good thing.
I love ND-G, but think that maybe Michio Kaku would have been my first choice. Just my opinion - ultimately I am grateful for this show.

YES, I love Michio Kaku...but NDG has a bit more presence on TV, plus Seth MacFarlane sort of knew him prior to Cosmos.

yeah, it was NDG and Sagen's wife that was pushing for this for years and it wasn't until Seth that they made some headway and got it greenlit
A couple of years before the original Cosmos was Connections.
Much like Carl Sagan, James Burke explored the cause and effects of technology, woven through history and in our lives today.
Starting with 'The Trigger Effect', Full episodes are posted on youtube.

LOVED Connections! That was an excellent program.

LOVED Connections! That was an excellent program.
Been re-watching Connections now and in the last minutes of episode two the meaning of the title 'Death in the Morning' is revealed... mind blown!
I'll have to check them out again with the family. There was another oldie but a goodie that I used to like that came right on after Connections in my area - it was called 'The Secret Life Of Machines'.
Every Dr. Tyson fan needs to see this LOL!
