I thought I started a thread about the upcoming Iron Man movie.. but couldnt' seem to find it.
Robert Downey Jr. was selected to play the famous superhero. Here is an article I found today.
Actor Robert Downey Jr. is quoted at Superhero Hype talking about how he's not afraid of hard work. "The suit for 'Iron Man' is so complex and does so much stuff that except for once or twice or from the chest up, I'm not required to do all that much," Downey Jr. said. "What I will do is a lot of motion capture so that the movement isn't just some random stunt guy. A lot of time I look at CGI and I'm like 'What's the reference for this? This looks like a cartoon reference not a person." So I said I want to do all the motion capture work, which is like eight months after finishing shooting, but as much as it as I can do, I will."
Was Downey approached, or did he make overtures to get the part? "I went after it like a greyhound after a rabbit," he said. "I loved Marvel and 'Iron Man' to me is the goods. To tell you the God's honest truth, I'd thrown them all away for 'Sgt. Rock,' because I really grew up on 'Hogan's Heroes.' I'm still addicted to the History Channel and the Military Channel is my thing, but Tony's the best because I could never be Sgt. Rock. He's a little bigger and more butch and has a cigar, I don't see it. Tony's a perfect fit for me, and if I was ever going to do this type of thing, I thought, you know, like early '40's. Great, because when you hang up your 'macho hat' and start directing or doing other stuff, it's not an embarrassment to be doing this in your late '40s still if we wind up doing three of them." Downey also said two casting announcements would happen soon, including Pepper Potts.
I gotta say personally I am looking forward to this movie and hope they can do as good a job as with the Batman and Spiderman movies of recent years.
Iron Man had to be my fave character reading the comics as a kid. I think the real reason was because he was a normal flawed guy. OK, he was rich and all that, but apart from that - he didn't have superpowers of any sort or anything.. he designed a tool to help him do what he wanted to do, and well hell I just thought the armor was cool! Wished I had one at school! :) I think also when the comics depected Stark's problems with the booze (not a problem I have) it made him definately mortal and fragile. I liked that. Didn't make him so cardboard as perhaps superman (for example) appeared.
Of course I know Batman, Spidey etc have their own flaws etc, and The Dark Knight really turned the head on batman, but for me Iron Man was always the one I loved the most.
So, looking forward to this one!
Never have been too into Iron Man even though I follow most of the Marvel line up of characters. Robert Downey Jr. might make this interesting. I'm sure I'll see it in any case.
I'm with Rico. I know about Iron Man but I never really read the comic but he seemed like a really cool Superhero. I will definitely see this movie.
FIRST LOOK AT "IRON MAN" MOVIE ARMOR
Entertainment Weekly published this morning the first look at Tony Stark's armor from the forthcoming “Iron Man†film. Starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, “Iron Man†began shooting in March under director Jon Favreau (“Elf,†“Madeâ€) and is expected to see release in May 2008.
The armor, which is very faithful to that of recent Iron Man comics appearances, is designed by Stan Winston. According to Favreau, “Robert was very bullish on wearing the suit whenever possible.†However, Favreau added that after seeing the heavy and restrictive costume, Downey Jr. may no longer be “such a fan of that idea.â€
Tony Stark is definitely one of the more complex characters in the Marvel Universe. He's gone from near-death, which was why he built the suit - as a mobile iron lung - , to millionaire drunk playboy, to, currently in the Civil War storyline, a proponent for the Mutant Registration Act which put him at odds with Captain America. So Downey seems to be a pretty good fit for this.
Question, assuming this is on topic, If you are a Marvel reader:
Do you find it odd that, in the Civil War storyline, Captain America was against registering mutant powers, the equivalent of registering that you are gay or an HIV carrier in our reality, IMHO, Big Business in the form of Tony Stark and the government wanted people to register, and Cap dies and Stark wins? Did Marvel feel this is a logical extension of the story and will eventually be overturned by clearer heads prevailing, or is this an extension of the storytellers own ideals? Or was Cap dying the point, that when you force this America dies, and the only way to bring it back is by stopping this type of injustice, and that's how they'll bring Cap back to life?
New Iron Man Cast Photo
A new photo showing Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard in character for Iron Man. Directed by Jon Favreau, the comic book adaptation opens May 2, 2008.
The film tells the story of Tony Stark, a billionaire industrialist and genius inventor who is kidnapped and forced to build a devastating weapon. Instead, using his intelligence and ingenuity, Tony builds a high-tech suit of armor and escapes captivity. Upon his return to America, Tony must come to terms with his past. When he uncovers a nefarious plot with global implications, he dons his powerful armor and vows to protect the world as Iron Man.
I am not a fan of Robert Downey Jr. at all, but at least this film looks interesting and hopefully the casting of Downey won't be it's downfall.
Kevin
I think this movie is going to be very good. Top notch cast and I like the director too.
I read that Sam Jackson was filming his scenes as Nick Fury this week.
OK, I have to ask - why are they making Sam Jackson Nick Fury? Is there some stipulation that he has to be in everything where there is a cigar-chomping bad ass? Why do they think it's OK to change characters that are just as beloved as the main ones? Fury had his own comic! They didn't make Spider-Man black, or Asian, or Jewish - don't change Nick Fury, or Kingpin, etc.
/Rant.
This does look like a promising movie, I am keeping my fingers crossed. I cant say that I have been really impressed with POTC 3 Spiderman 3 or the fantastic 4 2.
Well of course when at Comic Con they ask that you don't video tape the special videos but people always do... so check out the special Iron Man movie trailer made especially for Comic Con. It might not stay up long.. so check it out while you can.

Looks pretty cool, like how they Threw the Iron Man song into the trailer, gets you really pumped for this movie
One of my favorite Marvel characters until Civil War :)...traitor!
This looks like it's going to be damn good. I like how Tony Stark is a cocky jerk at the beginning.
WOW...WOW...WOW!!!
I cannot WAIT until next May....Holy Crap that looked cool. I love the flying scene at the end of the trailer.
OK, that was a KICKING trailer! My goodness!
That looks awesome.
Cool to put in the song there.
This should rock.
awwww I still can't watch it.. keeps giving me a Q with a ? mark on it.. I think it means I'm missing something.. but I tried it on both my PC and Mac and I have never had issues playing trailers from apple.com before.

Might be just flooded with requests Kenny. Did you try one of the smaller format sizes from the main link page? Also, make sure you have the latest Quicktime on your system.
I did manage to see it finally.. I think it was just busy. After all the hype over the trailer and reading what you guys had posted... I found it to be good.. but not mind blowing.
Very Cool!!
It looks like youtube is finally leaving this one up. I'm really getting excited about this film!
It seems as though the film is sticking increadibly close to the comic version of the Iron Man origin (except for trading out Viet Nam for Afghanistan). Also, the final version of Tony's armor is almost an exact match to the modern comic's Iron Man suit. This might be the best Marvel comic film adaptation since Spider-Man. ;D
Two new "Iron Man" movie images....
More an more excited every day......

Just checked out the TV spot on youtube (my computer and the apple trailers site don't get along well)...

Whoa.......just....WHOA!
Apparently I am going to at least 2 movies in the theater this May
Here are the US Poster (top one) and International Poster (bottom one)
WOW! Those are both awesome!
I find the different posters interesting. I wonder what the rationale is behind each version?
It almost feels like the American one says "Come for the Iron Man costume, stay for the acting." While the international one says "Apocalypse Iron Man."
Or something. OK, I'm reaching.
Iron Man to Open Early?
Source: ComingSoon.net
March 11, 2008
ComingSoon.net reports that Andrew Cripps, President of Paramount Pictures International, announced at ShoWest's International Day on Monday that Iron Man will be released Day-and-Date worldwide on April 30. What is unclear is whether that means North America will also get the movie two days earlier than the planned May 2 release. One thing to support that we will, is that Paramount is planning another Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull trailer for April, presumably with another Paramount movie, of which the biggest one would be Iron Man (if it indeed opens here on April 30.)
New 2 minute sneak peek scene. Man, this movie looks like a lot of fun!

I didn't see it posted but there is a clip on iTunes - Run before you can walk. Looks like his first flight test.
So is anyone planning on seeing this, this weekend?? I have tickets to a PGA screening this Sunday.. I'm really looking forward to it.
Getting very good reviews. Rare the 2 Detroit papers agree on a movie - especially sci-fi.

Nice! Might be able to go tonight to see it!
I LOVED IT>>>>>>>>>>>>>> RD jnr is brilliant as Stark. Everything about this film i loved. Comic book adaption = GREAT, direction = brilliant, humour = dead on, the IRON MAN SUIT = i want one. Stan Lee as Hugh Hefner = interesting. Can't wait for the DVD.
I'm a big comic fan (as you all know) and I thought the movie was great. Lots of fun for comic fans and the general movie audience. Loved Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark. Perfect fit for the part. Good mix of story, character, plot and action. Well paced. Of course they tweak and change things a bit to make it into a movie, but the essence of Iron Man was there I thought. I'll be going again.
Just got back from the movie, and it was fantastic. It was a lot of fun, and some great effects and action. I was worried after all the ads and promotions that I had seen to much, but there was still plenty of good stuff in there. As well I saw this in a Digital Theatre and it looked so clear, the first movie I had ever seen Digital, so they must have just upgraded the Theatre.
Did anyone stay past the trailers? I haven't seen the movie yet but something happens that my friend who saw it was shocked that I knew.
IRONMAN PULLS DOWN OVER 100 MILLION IN 3 DAYS !! $85M more then the #2 spot
"Iron Man" was pure gold at the box office.
The Marvel Comics adaptation, starring Robert Downey Jr. as the guy in the metal suit, hauled in $100.7 million during its opening weekend and $104.2 million since debuting Thursday night, the second-best premiere ever for a nonsequel, according to studio estimates Sunday.
The film also scored overseas with $96.7 million in 57 countries where it began opening Wednesday, putting its worldwide total at $201 million.
The movie, distributed by Paramount, is the first release by Marvel Studios, which has begun financing its own productions after such studio-backed hits as the "Spider-Man," "X-Men" and "Fantastic Four" flicks.
"We could not have hoped for a better way for Marvel Studios to blast off," said David Maisel, chairman of the unit, a division of Marvel Entertainment, which stands to pull in a greater share of box office receipts and merchandising money by financing movies itself.
Debuting in second place with $15.5 million was Sony's romantic comedy "Made of Honor," starring "Grey's Anatomy" heartthrob Patrick Dempsey as a man who tries to woo his best pal after she asks him to be "maid of honor" at her wedding.
"Iron Man," which won rave reviews from many critics, features Downey as billionaire arms designer Tony Stark, a boozy womanizer who builds a high-tech suit and becomes a superhero, mending his ways after he's taken captive and sees firsthand the devastation his weapons cause.
The film is directed by Jon Favreau, and also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jeff Bridges and Terrence Howard.
Despite the huge "Iron Man" opening, Hollywood's overall business was down compared to the same weekend last year, when "Spider-Man 3" had a record debut of $151.1 million. The top 12 movies took in $154.1 million, off 15 percent from a year ago.
"Nonetheless, `Iron Man' did better than expected," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box office tracker Media By Numbers. "This is certainly the shot in the arm the marketplace has needed."
Movie attendance this year is running 6 percent behind that of 2007, so the arrival of "Iron Man" may jump start the box office as the busy summer season begins.
"If that first May movie is a big hit, it tends to lead to a big summer," said Rob Moore, Paramount vice chairman. "There hadn't been a big event movie yet this year. So you have the first event movie of summer, and people go `And I hear it's really good. All right, I'm in.'"
"Iron Man" was the 10th biggest opening of all time and the fourth biggest for a superhero movie. Among nonsequels, it came in behind only the first "Spider-Man," which premiered with $114.8 million.
"If we have to, we're happy to come in second to another Marvel property," Maisel said. "It emphasizes how lucky we are to have such a powerful brand that's not loved by just comic book fans but also general movie fans."
The next Marvel production arrives in June with "The Incredible Hulk," distributed by Universal and starring Edward Norton.
In limited release, David Mamet's martial-arts drama "Redbelt" opened solidly with $68,646 in six theaters. Released by Sony Pictures Classics, "Redbelt" stars Chiwetel Ejiofor as an honorable instructor caught up in corruption in the world of mixed martial-arts competitions.
Paramount Vantage's "Son of Rambow," a comic tale of two British boys making their own "Rambo" movie, also opened well with $52,549 in five theaters.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.
Nice! It's easily going to hit $200 plus.
World wide it broke 200 mil and if my movie sense is anything, I would say that it should hit 350 mil world wide by Wednesday.
Now that I finally have some free time (knock on wood), I plan on seeing this film this evening. I'm amped!
Just got back from the movie. It was awesome! I really enjoyed it. The film was way better than I expected. I think just about everyone here on the forum will enjoy it. But you never know! :)
It seemed to go by very quickly, the sign of a good flick.

Thanks to the heads-up I got on this forum, I stuck around thru the credits to see the final scene. I liked it. I always thought Sam Jackson was an ideal choice to play the Ultimate Universe version of Nick Fury.
By the way; I almost slapped myself in the face for not picking up on the agent's S.H.I.E.L.D. references until the 3rd or 4th time. As a comic fan, I expected better of myself! :blush
Yep, this movie was awesome, but you guys already know that.
Awesome is right. I want to see it again. :)
I have to admit; I felt a little guilty at some of the joy I got from the film. Some parts could be considered by many to be sexist; and though the film never comes out and says it, it is easy to see that part of the effect it has on audiences is due to its blatant manipulation of many of the fears and feelings of resentment the nation still harbors over 9-11. The bad guys are never labled as terrorists or given a name that would be recognized from the real world, but I don't think that their nationality is simply a coincidence.
I also know that I'm not the only one who got a vicarious thrill from seeing Iron Man sweep into the battlefield and jump in to help out the villagers, or who got a kick from watching his escape from captivity in his prototype suit of armor.
Awesome movie. The technology in CGI that was displayed in Transformers seems to have affected movies such as this. 10 out of 10 stars for just an all-around good movie.
Kudos

I missed the end bit, i wish they wouldn't do that. Still interesting little bit.

I like that they put stuff at the very end of the movie. Working in the industry I always sit through the credits as all those people deserve to be seen. They work hard on the movie and out of respect it's my job to sit there and read the names. So to have an extra scene tagged on the end is a reward for sitting there... at least that's how I look at it.
you probably have better cinema's than we have ha ha. I've sat through some credits as i agree it's good to see names but sometimes you've been there for nearly 3 hours and you've got to go and stretch the legs. What would help people stay is if they could cut down the waiting game. Adverts they could go i mean really does anyone once they have sat down think hey i've just seen a coke commercial what a great idea i'll go to the foyer now especially so i can annoy everyone who has sat down. Get rid of them, and the crap orange mobile phone adverts and just have trailers. Oh and i'd ban pop corn. Actually when are they going to make cinema's with headphone adapters in the chairs so you can plug in and not listen to people talking, giggling, telling the cretin next to them about the plot, or surping the drink and then sneezing it over you. Erm sorry off on a rant.
I guess you pay for the whole experience. Man, if they didn't have popcorn at the movie theater, it wouldn't be worth it! :) :juggle
I'm with you Rick, I like the whole experience of going to the movies. I go fairly often and there have only been a few times where I was bothered by someone else. Usually a young child crying or talking. It's just fun to be in a filled theater on opening day with a lot of people jamming popcorn in their mouths all watching the same film together.
Ah the differnece between you fun filled Americans and us slighlty annoyed Brits. I jest about the popcorn because i enjoy nacho's and salsa more but i do get so annoyed by talking. We have a serious problem with people having a lack of respect in this country. We don't have ushers or attenies to keep an eye on things, hell we don't even numbered seats anymor. Now I don't mind some hushed tones etc but full on conversations is just not on. Now i'm talking about England here and i'm used to going to the cinema sitting down in silence to enjoy a good film, ok laughing is great, shocked gasps of horror or anticipation is brilliant but talking about the football or what you plan on doing on the night at a nightclub is just not on. That is the reason why cinema attendances is down in England. I just don't get talking in cinema's. Go to the bar and have your chat instead of interupting my enjoyment. Now my friends have been to the flicks in the states and they said that it's a brilliant experience because everyone enjoys the film together, laughs together etc but they also said that you don't get people talking through the film. I think that's why you both enjoy the cinematic experience more than i do here in England. I'll have to come over to your country to experience the differnece in cinematic feel, Australia cinema was great i enjoyed that. I'm rambling now......
It's not really a whole lot different here in general. Just depends on the group you end up with. For example, for a movie that I really like and see when it opens I will go back a week or two later and see it with hardly anyone in the theater during an early showing. That way I can catch any parts I missed due to crowd noise, etc. But this is a bit expensive - especially these days.
I know for myself, I usually go to matinees, as the theatre is usually less full then in the evenings. For the most part people are pretty quiet and watch the movie with everyone else. I can see your frustration Hawkeye if people people are carrying on like that. For me, I can only really think of a few times in the past few years where people were overwhelming annoying, so on the whole It has been pretty good. For me, if I can, I try to sit away from large groups of people, especially groups of teen age girls who look like they might have cell phones. I think the cost of movies now might make people more attentive, at least where I live. If you are paying over 12 dollars for a movie, you would hate to waste it away talking about things you could talk about later. I know a few years ago, where I live they were talking about movie theatres serving alcohol. Fortunately that did not happen. I could see where there would be people getting up every few minutes to go to the bathroom, or guys making beer runs in the middle of the movie for their group, and end up spilling a bunch just like you see at sporting events, or just being more generally loud.
Having worked for a cinema in the past for several years, I can say that the cost of the ticket directly affects the experience of the movie. When you go to one of the discount times or theaters, you tend to see more talking or chatting though the movie. When you go to one of the Ultra movie houses with the stadium seats and the double digit ticket prices.
There is a house here that has 20 buck tickets, but you get your own little table and stuff for the movie. They sale mixed drinking and offer a menu for the show.
Here is the place right outside of my town and what they offer:
http://www.nationalamusements.com/dine/luxlevels.asp
When Pirates 2 was released, we went and saw the midnight showing. For me, it wasn't too bad of an experience, but it sounded like my brothers were a little less happy. (We couldn't stay together due to overflowing seats.) They had to sit by a bunch of drunken idiots throughout the entire movie. So its all about luck I suppose. So far, there have only been two times were I was irritated by my "neighbors" in movie theaters. Just imagine a guy sick with the cold eating popcorn and popping gum extremely loud. Actually, popping gum in the theaters is about the only thing that drives me up the wall. Especially in the quiet parts of the movie.
With home theaters being made in the basements of houses, people are tending to choose that over theaters especially with rising ticket prices and popcorn/drink prices. (I swear, every time I go to a movie, the price of everything goes up a $1.00). Its so easily to blow $20 going to a theater its not funny.
I think a possible solution to the theater problem is to install little hand-held devices in the seats that let you summon an usher without having to get up. This would let them catch people doing something (talking, being obnoxious/drunk). Of course, this could lead to abuse, but then thats why you have a system that lets you know who's pushing the button so they get booted. I've heard of these devices being installed in certain theaters. Not only is it good for keeping obnoxious people out of the theater, but it also lets them know if the sound/picture is bad.
My :2cents

Could idea King. Looks like you guys in the states have the same problems that we do. I love going to the cinema, i find the whole idea a treat. Getting the ticket buying some pop, and having nacho's but of late the annoying think of talking and whay you said above just spoils it for me. I'm now paying £11 to sit in the VIP showing because you tend not to get idiots paying that amount to not watch a film.

Yea, I haven't had too many problems, but it is an increasing problem all over the states. Its why we have ppl building their own home-theater systems.

I'd love to have a basement. Alas hardly no homes have basements. Cellars yes but they resemble the one's you normally see in hammer Horror films. I still think having audio connections in seats would be great. Plug your headphones in and way you go.
Well - it's official....
Deadline Hollywood Daily reports that director Jon Favreau has reached a deal with Marvel Studios to direct Iron Man 2, which is targeted for an April 30, 2010 release.
Robert Downey Jr. had a sequel clause in his contract so he's on board. We assume that Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow will return as well.
Budgeted for about $140 million, the first film has earned a massive $563.8 million worldwide.
Well if the second is as good as the first I'm game.
That's great news! I'll be there with my $11 popcorn and $6 soda. ;)
Sweet, I will definitely see this. Iron Man was one of my favorite heroes that I never read about (ironic ik).
King
Great news. I liked Paltrow in it, some people have dissed her but i thought she was pretty cool.
I finally had chance to see this. I did not get to the theater but since I have a surround sound stereo system and an HDTV I doubt I would have enjoyed it that much more in a theater surrounding. I did enjoy the film but it felt too much like Transformers to me and just a big smash em up and create havoc and destruction film. Downey was fine and Paltrow was OK but it was not as good as I was anticipating nor as good as the 4 and 5 star reviews it received. A fun and enjoyable popcorn romp yes. A great film? No. And to tell you the truth I enjoyed the Iron Man animated film much more. I think it provided a better and more interesting story. Although there are some similarities of plot.
Kevin
Kevin - I think the factor here in "Iron Man's" favor was they had a great actor in the lead role and a director that gave most fans what they wanted to see in an "Iron Man" origin film. Also, it was above most comic book movies in the talent put into it - at least in my view. I'm still more of a "Spidey" and "Batman" fan but that's mainly because I've read those comics for a long time and I enjoy those characters more. But I still thought they did a great job with "Iron Man."
