Ok, I'm officially calling this winter one of the nastiest ones ever! Too much snow already, too darn cold - and it's only January 3rd! So I'm starting a thread to post pics, swap stories and get through this crazy weather and season!
First story and pic...
After shoveling for the last two days to dig out of our latest snow storm I had to run to pick up Lynn this morning from the airport on her trip back from the Rose Bowl. This is what my car told me the temp was outside as I headed to the airport. -14F.!! (-25.6 C.)!! Nuts!! Kaylee doesn't even like it outside right now. Icy roads and at least a dozen cars off the road I saw on my drive. But back home safe now. Can't we just all hibernate?! :)
Same here. -21 here this morning and apparently -35 C with wind chill. I saw at least 4 cars off the road on the way to work plus another impacted on the highway median. Apparently there was a 10 car pileup on the Gardiner Expressway into downtown Toronto as well.
As I said on FB, I love winter, but this is a bit cold!
12F here - nothing compared to you guys.
We are getting more snow Sunday and even COLDER weather early next week. :(
It got down to 58 last night brrrrrrrrrrr :)

Like a weather seesaw, California days are dry and mild too.
Of course there are only two seasons out here, 'Mud and Dust' :)
Any more dashboard temp. pics?
The weather in Western Canada as been up and Down. Yesterday it was mild and had rain, and today it has been getting colder with temps like Rico is having this weekend. Drive home I saw some Trucks in the ditch, so things getting a bit slippery, but those are mostly pickup truck drivers who drive to aggressively for the conditions.
By Tuesday next week we will be back to more milder temperatures, so it feels like there are a few systems battling for space, and each dumping lots of moisture along the way. Really have not cared for this winter at all.
Surprisingly mild for Colorado so far this year. I've learned to trust the squirrels in the yard as a general forecasting tool. If they're scampering around like crazy in September, be prepared for a lot of snow and cold temperatures. This year, they were definitely slacking - one really cold week, and a couple of snowstorms so far. Right on track with the critters activity.
That said, I think we'd die if not for our electric heated mattress pad. Our bedroom is the coldest room in the house, and the baseboard heater just doesn't cut it. Heated mattress pad underneath and a nice down comforter on top is definitely the way to go.
Stay warm, folks!
its winter - its cold. Pretty normal for January in Michigan. I remember worse winters growing up in Farmington.

LOL! Let's see if you say that on Monday and Tuesday of this coming week when it's -20F. with about -40F. or lower with the wind.
You might want to check this link too. We don't go below zero a lot. And seldom as low as we are getting now.

I've only seen 4/-2 for Monday. about the same for Tuesday.
It's only going to be 65 tomorrow... 54 today feel bad for all you guys freezing, but thats why i moved from NJ figured i spent half my life freezing and blowing snow. Don't miss it.
It's currently 56 degrees, but a cold front will be here tomorrow, and the low Sunday night is supposed to be near 12 degrees. Not uncommon for North Texas to see temps in the teens in the winter months but it usually lasts only a few days and a week tops. Since moving here I have only seen the temps drop to the single digits once.

I think you are talking the highs, not the low. Also, out where I live it is typically 5-10F. cooler than in the city. Not to mention the foot more of snow expected.

Temps below are without the wind chill figured in as well.
We're under a watch as well, as of right now a pleasant light snow is falling. I'll be interested to see what the morning brings.
Just dug out the first wave of our current snow storm (about 1 foot expected). Back deck this morning...
Yikes, you wouldn't need the cubes to enjoy Ice Tea on the deck today.
Wow! ..... feel bad for you guys, i am about to take a bike ride 65 and partly cloudy. Its suppose to drop into the 40's on Wednesday.
A few more pics from today...

so nice!
Not so nice to have to shovel it all. Just went out again for another round of clearing. At least Lynn and I both get to stay home tomorrow! Schools are closed and my boss said not to drive in! Nice to work for good people. :)
I really laughed at the ending of your video Rico! I love snow and I love going to it for skiing or tobogganing, but I really wouldn't want to live where it snows a lot anymore. I don't miss the shoveling and the extreme cold of my native state (Wisconsin). Nice photos though. Makes me want to shut in and drink some hot cocoa. Our cold front arrived today and we are supposed to have temps around 12 degrees overnight. Thankfully no precip with this round.
Kevin
We had some snow and more freezing rain overnight. So now we have a drioveway covered in an inch or so of snow with a nice crust on top. The drive into work this morning was surprisingly quick, just had to watch for black ice.
Got the driveway and car mostly un-buried this morning. Now the nasty cold temps are coming in. At least I get to work at home today!
Wow, crazy warm here this morning - got to 55F - and is raining heavily. It was very cold just a day ago. The cold weather in your area is moving to our area today - so we will go from 55F to ~5F overnight. Crazy weather.
Schools already closed for tomorrow too. Expected to be about -20F. tonight with about -40-50F. with the wind chill. The wind is really kicking up here now and making all the piles of snow drift.
Hoth-Upon-The-Lake..
Actual air temp. outside right now is -8.5F. and falling fast!
DECK OFFICER
Sir, the temperature's dropping too
rapidly.

That's right. And my friends out

Love the Family Guy spoof of that moment.
Now at -11.1F. (air temp.).
Just wanted to say that I hope everyone is safe and well in the chilly US of A, oh and please don't feel the need to share it with the UK! We can't cope with rain and damp leaves :-(
Ok yesterday morning 55F/12C, now it is 1F/-17C outside with a windchill of -19F/-28C some change in 24 hours!
Only hit -18F. Overnight. Wind chills to about -30-40F. Here.
Same here. There's a ground stop at the airport. Equipment is freezing and ground crews can't stay outside long enough to do their jobs.
Breaking records here 33 and feels like 21.
I think this SOB is responsible for all of our vortex-woes. Who does he think he is brokering deals about climate change without congressional or executive permissions?!

hahahahaha
It was freezing here in Central Ohio too. Got a lot better for the weekend though. On those - degrees days when I went to work, or was leaving work for that matter, my car was like 'whatever dude, you try to start in this'. It did but it didn't want to. We have an old steam heating system and it stayed pretty nice in the upstairs the whole time. Downstairs at night got pretty chilly though.
The worst part was that on Monday and Tuesday the heat at work wasn't working right in the front of the store so all the employees about froze to death! I wore gloves most of those two days even when I was helping my customers which weren't to many. The furnace guy came on Tuesday to fix it and I wanted to start clapping. He fixed it and it was much nicer when I got to work on Wed.
Now if it stays in the 40's and no more snow for the rest of the winter I'll be good to go!!
We've had rain, rain, floods and rain so it's been a fair bit warmer than you guys seem to have had. Having said that, our usual cold period is coming up so there is yet time for some snow over here. With the amount of water in my garden, if it finally freezes I should be able to sell skating rights to the neighbours.
Oh, and we've also had wind. My 30ft tree that's been lying across the neighbour's garden since Dec 23rd has finally been chopped up and taken away but I think I need a new fence now :(

LOL! That's about right! Here's a short video of our additional 8 inches of snow yesterday here:
http://www.treksinscifi.com/video/snow_20140201.mp4 (http://www.treksinscifi.com/video/snow_20140201.mp4)
wow Rico that's a bummer...i hope it warms up soon. We had a few days of cold weather and had a quarter inch of ice which was the end of the world down here. It stopped everything the kids were off school for three days pretty funny ,but back to the 70's today and i am off to play golf with friends. Happy Sunday everyone and keep warm!
The shoveling was so bad this morning I had to get my wheelbarrow out in order to move the snow away from the edges of my driveway!
wow Rico that's crazy i feel for ya brother....hard to believe that your moving snow and i am going to play Golf in shorts and a Tee. I def don't miss the harsh NJ winters... when i moved the first thing people asked was , are you selling your John Deer Snow Blower. Rico do you have a Snow Blower?
We've been getting a little wintry precipitation today. Mostly in the form of rain turning to ice. Not as bad as we had in December though. Our weather has been like a roller coaster all last month. We would have 60 degree temps and then drop to the teens at night and highs in the 30s and two days later back in the 50s to 60s. I'm very sensitive to weather changes and I have not been feeling good for a month now with no hope for any change soon. Apparently we have more wintry precipitation coming next weekend according to the long term forecast.

Nope - no snow blower. Just lots of muscle power!
It hit 54F here today - which is a huge change. All that goes away - we have a winter storm warning for Monday. 4" to 5" on the way.
Only about 24F. here today. We haven't been much above freezing for months! :(
As predicted - we went from 54 yesterday to below freezing and snow today. School cancelled where I live. Kids are happy!
You must be getting the leftovers from our recent storm. More coming in a couple days too!
Days like this I practice the old maxim 'It it's snowin...we ain't goin!'. So I am telecommuting today. :)
Kaylee and I took a little walk when I got home from work today before our next blizzard hits tonight.
We have one hitting us tonight as well - although it may be an ice storm. No place where I live to put the snow. Mounded up high already.
Now we're getting it. Took me an hour to get into work, alternates between this and whiteout.

We got another 6 inches today, bringing our season up to about 60 inches of snow so far - or five frakking feet of snow! About 152 cm for you metric boys. All shoveled at my house by hand!
Yikes! We lost power all day from the ice storm. Just came back a few minutes ago. :(
Glad you got your power back. Actually, based on the news this evening it's more like 70 inches of snow here so far.

70"! Wow, you'll be forming a glacier there soon. The philadelphia area had 640K customers\households without power today. I would have preferred snow - these ice storms are for the birds. I was exhausted breaking the stuff up.
Below zero again this morning with about -20F. wind chill. Humbug!
woa ....that's cold Rico, high today here is 55 feels cold to me.
The giant panda at the Toronto Zoo seems to be enjoying our recent snowfall.

We got some snow last night, but nothing like you guys....

Those garden boxes look cool.
Wow....winter wonderland, we were hanging poolside this weekend :)
It is ugly here to the north of Philadelphia. Snow coming down sideways from the wind, and quite deep already.

Pics! Must see pics! :)
All my friends and family who are in NJ told me they got another 20 plus inches on top of what already was there.... glad i moved. My Niece lives in Filthydelphia pretty bad there too.
We got about 15" where I live, but now there is freezing rain coming down. I did manage to get the driveway and sidewalks in stages. The ice is tougher to deal with. No salt or calcium chloride to be found for love or money!
Another weird thing just happened - which I don't recall ever having seen - some lightning and thunder during a snow storm. Very strange. Some war air must be colliding with the cold front to the south of us.
I saw lightning and heard thunder once during a snowstorm years ago in Michigan. It's very eerie since it lights up all the snow if it happens at night. Very cool!
No shit, it's going to be 85 here this weekend.
Rico....Back in 2001 when i still lived in Jersey on a lake we had lightning during a bad snow storm and yes it was eerie and way cool the way it lit up the snow filled sky. Bryan its only in the 70's here lucky guy!
Well the sun is out here in Philly and the roads that have been plowed are drying off.
Here are some amazing pics from Mackinac Island and the Grand Hotel this winter by their official photographer who is spending this winter on the island.
