This week, Chris and myself tackle "2001: A Space Odyssey" as well as the sequel film, and all the books. We also talk a little "Wolverine" and the next Superman/Batman film. Had a lot of fun covering a ton of stuff this week. Big thanks to Chris for helping out once again on this epic podcast. Enjoy the show!

It's pretty epic - if I do say so myself! :)

This is going to be awesome! Downloading and ready to go.
I didn't know this until I was watching the video clip, that this movie came out the day after I was born! I seen it a long time ago and need to watch it again. I have recently watched 2010. Looking forward to hear what you guys have to say about it.
Great review guys!
2001 is held in such high regard and has influenced so many modern sci-fi movies.
STTMP for one, and I've always thought the TNG episode 'The Royal' was Trek's own spin on 2001.
Zoolander's Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson as a couple of technically challenged male models pounding a computer with a big bone is a hilarious and a loving movie homage too.
2010 was a good sequel and stands on it's own. Roy Scheider brought such humanity to the role and I really liked the science-factual aspects of the movie.
I know it's tough to cover all the trivia in a short podcast.
My favorite bit is the way HAL is one letter short of... IBM.
I like to imagine that 2001 inspired Steve Jobs in his crusade against 'Big Blue'. :)
I am a huge Arthur C. Clarke fan, and 2001 is one of my favorite movies. I can't wait to listen to this one.
Yep Dave, that's Floyd's beach computer!
I never thought it was odd that they had the Disocvery avaibale to make the journey, it seems a reasonable ship to have considering all the other technology shown in the film. I never assumed they just whipped it up in 18 months!
I believe in the novel it is mentioned that the Discovery was already being constructed or that there was a mission planned for it. It's been about 20 years since I read it last though.
I was looking for models of the Discovery and Leonov, there's some unlicensed resin models around but nothing official since the 80s.
I have seen some amazing large scale fan produced models of the Discovery. Here is a cool one!

And despite Kubrick's best effort to destroy all the props and models, the Space Station did survive a few years sitting out in an open field!
I know WHY he did it, but in hindsight it's criminal! I know he didn't want it showing up in Space Boners or something, but the models in that movie were simply beautiful. Would have loved the opportunity to see them up close.

Would you believe who ever took these pictures clearly understood what it was and yet they left it there and it was completely destroyed by vandals not too long after.
F&*(^(*&*(&)&*)(*(*^&$%ERS!!!!!!!!! Damn. Woulda snagged that sucker and made it my life's project.

Totally, that sucker would have found it's way to my home post haste! Restored it would be worth a small fortune.
Really sad to see stuff like that. Thank goodness most of this stuff is only just digital these days. None of those messy ships and props to dump in fields anymore. ;)
Ah gee, I really want to listen to this but don't you just hate it when you put your iPod down somewhere and it takes days to find again? Aggghhh.
V
PS. I know I could listen to it here but I really treasure TISF during my commutes.
Yeah - I am still finishing up the last cast - anxious to get to this one.
I just listened last night, great podcast. I learned things I didn't know about the movie and books. I have seen both 2001 and 2010 but I have not read the novels as of yet.
Started listening this morning but we're on holiday now so I'm not sure when I'll get round to the end of it. Nice job so far, guys.
I just really love the feel of these movies. I'm hoping the upcoming movie "Gravity" gives us another solid, space program/Sci-Fi type of film.
Great podcast. Makin' me want to read those books!

A film school project on Clarke's classic Rendezvous with Rama. Cool.
Wow, love the whole Rama series!!
Found this by The Light Works folks.

Great podcast chaps, loved the banter at the beginning and Ricos sum of the film in 30 seconds lol. Made me want to watch the film again. Brilliant.
The banter, lol, my main skill in life. Glad you enjoyed it Meds.
It was a great discussion on some great work.
Just finished it up - and really enjoyed the cast. Thanks guys. If you ever do a Rama cast, count me in - I have read all of them - being a huge ACC fan.
You and I have very similar reading interests, Pete. I know you like Ben Boca too, right?
Great job, guys. Lots of cool info that you shared. I went to check Netflix for 2001 and even checked at Walmart since I now want to watch 2001 again. Did watch 2010 a few months ago on netflix. I have never read the books so hearing that the books were set by Saturn was an interesting tidbit. I may have to read these someday.

Yes, love his Grand Tour stuff. A great hard scifi author.
