Another thing of interest to TOS fans is a new series of books that documents the creation of the series. Season one comes out in August, Season two in September and Season three in November. Season one's volume is 600 pages. This could prove to be a really valuable and comprehensive resource. Pre-order today and save $4.00.
Quote"Author, Marc Cushman, had the great honor of befriending both Gene Roddenberry and Robert H. Justman. As a result of that friendship, Marc was given exclusive access all the Star TrekĀ® production documents from the three years the series ran, which are currently housed in the UCLA Archives under a bequest by Roddenberry and Justman. These documents are private and not available for general public viewing.
"This work is derived from eight months spent researching the details of the production. These books reveal, for the first time, the truth behind all the politics and behind-the-scene machinations of the productions."

Hmm, interesting. I wonder why it doesn't seem to also be on Amazon?
Just got my review copy of this book. Hearing good things about it. Can't wait to dive in!

Yeah, I think you need it right now. Just flipping through this book makes me want to redo every TOS episode I have podcasted about. Sigh...
I want that. I love love inside detail-y production books.

Ordered. :)
I really am enjoying reading this book. The details about each episode are informative, and after being a fan for so many years, and having read so many books and magazines about TOS, I can't believe how many things I never knew. I love these kinds of books.
As an aside there seems to be a division among fans regarding the pictures used in the book. There are a couple of threads at TrekBBS that discuss the ethics of the pics. There are claims that many of the pictures used came from Startrekhistory.com without their permission. If so that was uncool because their pics are restored images and hosted on their site for free and Cushman is using them and making a profit off of others hard work. Whether this is indeed true I do not know for sure. Startrekhistory claims they have property rights to the pictures because they restored them. The publisher's position is that the pictures are in the public domain because Paramount nor Desilu copyrighted all the images. Many originally came from the now defunct Lincoln Enterprises. They claim that they have hidden "tells" in the pictures that prove they are their images but the publisher claims the images were provided by another source. Now I would like to know how in the world they can see hidden "tells' in their pictures when the images in the book have been altered for black and white printing? and much smaller too. They would have to see the original images used in the book to even begin to say with certainty that the images used came from their website. Anyway, it is a huge mess. I hope this doesn't keep the other two volumes from ever being released because I really like this book.
Kevin
Hmm, interesting. Photos online are a tricky thing. In my view, touching up a picture from a property like this doesn't give you ownership - especially if you post it online. The right thing to do though would have been to contact the site ahead of time and work out some type of deal. Original photos are one thing, but I don't think this startrekhistory site has much of a case.

And no updates about the other two volumes. I wonder if this means these will never see the light of day?
Nice interview with the author here:

And the book is still on sale too!
Season two now up for preorder:

Glad to see this finally moving forward. I've pre-ordered my copy. I'm assuming the March 31st is the release date? They don't really make it clear as to when we can actually start looking out for the books to arrive. I suppose you'll get another review copy of the book eh Rico?
Kevin
I bought a copy this time. Also working on getting an interview with the author. My book will be shipping around the end of this week.
How did I miss this? I'm going to have to pick them up. And Rico, I'm with Rick...a re-boot of TOS reviews, with new knowledge from these books, would be awesome! :D Angela and I were talking about doing the same for the Battlestar Galactica reviews we did when we first started podcasting. Wonder if there are any production notes and behind the scenes info out about BSG. Time to do some looking.
These are great books on the making of TOS and a cool look at what it took back in the day to get an episode made. Must buys for me!

And I want to try and help/co-host any reboot or new TOS episodes with you going forward! Pissed I missed "Alternative Factor", I could have at least sent in comments.
Ot it could be a whole new TOS review discussing the production more then the actual episode, which has always been your format.
Schedule is always posted in advance. Feel free to send comments in ahead of time.

I know, it's my fault for missing it.
I got to interview Marc Cushman yesterday (great guy) and that interview will be out next weekend (May 18th) on the podcast. As a little tidbit, Marc did say book three will be out this fall.
Sounds fun Rico. Did you keep the conversation safe or did you discuss some of the controversy surrounding the books and the pictures used?
Tune in next week to find out! :)
I am loving Season 2 right now!

Yeah! I have to say that regardless of the controversy the two volumes released are some of the most informative reference books about TOS ever released. Some of the facts perhaps can be debated but overall they are very well done.

Special sale going on right now which will get you a 35 mm film clip from TOS with your order.

When I get the clip (frame?), I'll scan and post it. :)
Me too! I ordered season one to get the revised and expanded edition.
The books arrived today and each had a 35mm film clip included.
Not sure why they were red tinted and not regular color stock film.
Click on the frame of Mr. Spock for some nice detail at a higher resolution.
Very cool. I think the red tint is maybe due to the aging film stock. That communicator looks different that Spock is holding.

A clip from 'A Taste of Armageddon', by the looks of the uniform in the background?
Got my revised first season book today and a piece of "Amok Time" film too! Red - but it is Vulcan!
Queue the duel music!
Just watched 'Turnabout Intruder'.
I forgot how good this episode was and one of the Shat's better performances!
After learning the truth about Janice Lester, Spock utterly opposes his captains authority.
Kirk commands the immediate execution of Scott and McCoy for mutiny.
Spock recounts the culmination of all experiences of the crew and their travels and asks them to take a leap of faith.
Now I'm looking forward to the final episode chapter in the third edition of 'These Are The Voyages'.
Kirk's last spoken words of the series, "if only.. if only"
Check this link out to help get the season three book out sooner than later...

cool!
It's made easy by using your amazon account.
Backing this kick-starter early delivery option seems the logical thing to do. :vulcan
Amazon linking does make it easier, and more of an impulse thing for me..

I showed a friend at work my Volume One and he quoted the Shat saying 'get a life'.
Think I'll spend an extra $10 to have this one personally autographed, lol!
What happens if they don't reach the goal? Does that mean the money is refunded or you just wait longer to get the book?
They're trying to raise 20k by the end of this month for printing and shipping in December.
If not successful, nothing will be charged to my account at that time.
The books regular publisher has a target date of sometime next year.
They made their goal and will ship in December.
Also listed is a copy of both volume 1 and 2 eBooks available for just $15 too.

What's funny about this campaign is that when it first listed it was implied that the "publisher" was resistant to release the third volume this year and Marc wanted to get it released. Then through some good investigating some Trekkies found out that Jacobs Press is Marc Cushman and so the listing was modified because of pressure from some who felt integrity was important. I like the books but Marc seems like kind of a questionable kind of character and some of his research may be faulty. There have been some pretty interesting discussions at TrekBBS about him and his tactics and ways.
Kevin
Received the final third volume of Marc Cushman's These Are The Voyages in the mail :)
I couldn't figure out what was on the top of the spine until I lined all of them up today, lol!
Can't wait to get to the bottom of the Spock's Brain episode :vulcan :shocked
Yep, i got mine as well last week!
It kind of irritates me that I was one of the first fans to start buying this series and then Cushman revised and changed the spine and cover for volume one and now my volume one doesn't match my two and three. I'm just not sure I'm willing to spend another $25.00 to have a matching cover and a little bit of additional information. Maybe if I have some extra money I might later.
Kevin
Kevin, send them an email. I think they are offering discounts or exchanges for book one. Marc told me that at some point.

Neither my 1, 2, or 3 and I could care less. I bought them to read them, not for display.

I read them Bryan. I still like sets to match though. It looks nicer on the shelf. I'm anal that way. Nothing wrong with having something aesthetically pleasing to the eye as well is there?
