Title: Next Trek movie idea - The Enemy Below
Post by: davekill on May 22, 2013, 12:39:55 PM
Just watched a WWII sub vs destroyer movie that is, dare I say... better than 'Run Silent, Run Deep'.

The Enemy Below stars Robert Mitchum and Curt Jurgens.
This film is low on melodrama and high on tech and strategy.

Basically it's the same cat-and-mouse game that takes a turn for the unexpected when midway through the movie, the U-boat captain begins playing music at full volume to sooth his nervous crew and flip Robert Mitchum the bird, lol!

For a war movie, this one has a surprise ending and could be remade into a great Romulan vs Federation flick.

I let out a big HA!, when early on the ships doctor is telling the captain about his practice before the war - how it now feels as if "it where on a distant planet from another century"

Good movie, highly recommended. :)

Oh man, I was watching the '95 sub warfare movie 'The Crimson Tide' and had forgotten a character mentions both Run Silent, Run Deep and The Enemy Below in the first few scenes!

I loved all the other pop culture references that Quentin Tarantino is reported to have contributed to the dialogue but was uncredited for.

This kind of action / drama would have made an amazing Trek movie too.
...I wonder if Archer ever let Porthos tinkle in the crew passages of his Enterprise?  :porthos

Until we get more space movies, submarine movies are the next best thing.

I always considered much of "Wrath of Khan" as basically a submarine film.

Yes, years ago.  I remember reading the movie strived for perfect realism and the hardship the cast endured due to the claustrophobic environment.

Crimson Tide is worth a re-watch - nominated for three Academy Awards.
Washington's character 'Lt. Ron Hunter' referred to himself as Capt. Kirk a couple of times in the movie.
As a Trek movie remake, it would be awesome to see Gene Hackman as an out-of-control Capt. Pike trying to launch against a perceived Romulan invasion, while his first officer Denzel Washington as Kirk - young and idealistic, challenges Pikes authority to attack while countering a ships mutiny.

... more sub movies to see:
Torpedo Run
U 47
In Enemy Hands
Ice Station Zebra
The Fifth Missile
Gray Lady Down

the sub warfare issue is in two star treks, the wrath of khan and the undiscovered country, at least to my thinking.  in khan it was more used, but in undiscovered country the cloaked bird of prey is playing cat and mouse.
the hunt for red october is a good one too. and who can forget down periscope, lol
