Yes - this will be one that I see. I have some reservations, since the kids look older than I imagine them in the book. Cautious optimism...
Perhaps they were aged up due to believability? Doesn't really matter, they're still kids. One of my favorite books of all time, Ben Kingsley looks pretty badass as Mazer Rackham!
As much as I have wanted to read these books and see the movie, I'm sticking with my boycott as not to put any of my money into the author's pockets.

Didn't know about that, then I read this:

I read these books long before Mr. Card made an ass out of himself. Not to make this a big thing, but my guess would be the author has already been paid by the studio.

After reading that, I can see where it's coming from, but I don't think my issue is with the religion, but the use of celebrity to promote some very hateful words.
While I don't agree with the idea that god made having dark skin a curse from god, I try not to dislike any religion as a whole. My decision wasn't because he was mormon. It was because of what he wrote.
Now, I know that my not reading the books, which my wife regrets buying, or seeing the movie will affect anything in the slightest way, it's just one of those things that put me off to joining in on the Ender thing.
I'll be the first to admit that it is a useless boycott and does nothing. Hell, there will probably be people that he targeted in line to see the movie. I just have this weird in ability to not go back on a boycott. I'm pretty upset with myself about it too. In the end, I think that it comes down to hate and hateful things. Having grown up with that around me, I try not to support it even slightly. It doesn't make sense and I fully understand that. Perhaps, it comes down to me not wanting to find enjoying in the words written by the man when his others were so intentionally hurtful.
X, I can definitely see where you are coming from.
I don't approve of Card's views. But here are my 2 cents on art :2cents:
My all-time favorite artist is Bernini. He did some terrible stuff, but it doesn't prevent me from appreciating his amazing sculpture. He had an affair with his assistant's wife, Costanza. When Bernini learned that his own brother was also involved with Costanza, he attempted to murder his brother. When that failed, he hired a man to cut Costanza's face to ribbons with a razor. Bernini basically got off scot-free from all this, being best buds with the Pope and all. This is pretty horrendous stuff. I would never support these actions. But I personally feel that art comes from a higher place, somewhere beyond human frailty and weakness. Think of all the beauty and enjoyment that art can bring to so many people. The Ender books (I've only read Ender's Game) have provided hours of joy to many readers. I feel that you can disapprove of the man but still enjoy the art. The man is the flawed vessel (as we all are) through which some great things were created.
I wasn't aware of any controversy around the author. I know how you feel, as I will not pay to see a Jane Fonda movie (we all have our lines that public figures may not cross).
I liked the book and am excited to see the movie! Great cast. :)
I read this book as a young teenager...it was one of the first real serious sci-fi books I ever read. I just have been wanting to see an adaptation for so long. Looks like it could be pretty great. Lots of people we all admire probably have views we wouldn't agree with, as a matter of fact, it's guaranteed. It's the dopey ones who divide their audience by spouting them in interviews that we know about.

I'm with you X... being a gay man I have been well aware of Card's harmful comments and for that reason I haven't read the books though I have a lot of friends who tell me how incredible they are. I just can't bring myself to reading them. I don't know if I'll see the movie or not.
Final poster.
hmm. That poster is extremely "meh"
Saw "Ender's Game" today. I think they did a good job translating the book to the screen. You get to see what makes Ender tick and what makes him special. I read the book several years ago and enjoyed that too. I realize there is some controversy related to this, but truthfully I'm certain my personal viewpoint doesn't line up with many artists I've enjoyed over the years. In any case, I think it's a very solid movie.

I plan on seeing this. I really enjoyed the first book in the series. I tired reading the second and found it incredibly dull. As for Card's outspoken views, I most certainly disagree with them but I do believe in separating the art from the artist.
Very well done movie, wonderful effects, and it sure doesn't pull any punches. The battles, in the arena and at the end of the movie were well executed, very different from what I pictured in the book but so cool.
I do miss the Demosthenes and Locke portions, but I get why they were cut, and really if anyone becomes interested in this series there's a bunch of books that cover Peter and Bean. The end was a bit of a departure, in the novel he finds the queen during his travels with Valentine much later in his life, but I get why they condensed it.
Good movie, I'd like to see if someone is brave enough to try and adapt Speaker for the Dead! Unlikely....
OK, I just got home from this movie but the theater had a power outage for a few minutes before the movie started. It took them about 40 minutes to start it back up and they played the movie right where it would have been if the movie has started on time. Somebody went out and said something but they only went back to the part where Ender and the group of kids were blasting off from Earth. Can anybody give me a rundown on the movie till that point. I liked what I saw of it but didn't get the beginning of the story. I would rate the movie a 6 out of 10. Maybe higher if I had seen the beginning.
Ender is in a precursor to Battle School, Graff and Anderson are watching him and his reactions with an implant in his neck. Ender beats a kid at a video game, Graff has his implant removed and Ender thinks he is washing out. Ender gets in a fight with the kid who he beat in the game and beats him pretty badly, to ward off future attacks. Graff decides then to pick Ender for Battle School, goes to his house, and tells him.
It's about 10 minutes or so.
Thank you for doing that, Chris.
Saw this, this week with my son (his first 'adult film'). I haven't read the book yet but the film came over pretty well. I think we both enjoyed the spaceship scenes most of all and I found some of the training and tactics particularly interesting.
Time for me to read the book now.
Still haven't bee to see this. :(
Saw this on HBO today. It was pretty good - but I am glad I didn't shell out the $'s to take the family to the theater. HOme viewing was fine.
I thought they did a very good job adapting the book into a movie. The kid playing Wiggin did great too.

Yes, and they couldn't 'age' him like in the book, so this was a good adaptation. I read the book years ago, and did the audiobook with the family on a recent long drive. Kids loved it.
