I saw this on another forum and I thought it might be cool to have a running thread of what we are watching currently. This one's for movies and maybe we could start one for TV shows in the TV area?
Last night we watched a documentary called The Sci-Fi Boys on Netflix. It features interviews with the likes of Stephen Spielberg, George Lucas, Peter Jackson, John Landis and others as to the pioneers of early science fiction movie making and what inspired them. Really cool to actually see some of these guys early stuff made as teenagers. They discuss influences like Ray Harryhausen, Roger Corman, Forest J. Ackerman (publisher of Monsters of Flimland) and other early pioneers of monster makeup, special effects, animation and science fiction and horror. If science fiction film making or films is one of your interests don't miss this documentary.
After that we had to watch Peter Jackson's King Kong again. I think the way Jackson tells the Kong story leaves something to be desired but the special effects scenes are quite awesome once they reach the island. I love the battle scenes of Kong with the dinosaurs and the scene of the brontosaurus stampede was just so cool to watch.
No matter what I still prefer the original King Kong from 1933. The stop motion animation paved the way for great stuff in the future by Harryhausen and others.

I love the original King Kong as well. It holds up surprisingly well. We watched it as a family last year.
Cool idea for a thread. I think the last movie I watched was "New Years Eve." That sort of romantic comedy from last year set on New Year's eve with the big cast. It was a cute, fun movie.
I finally saw Looper on iTunes this weekend, it was as good as everyone said. Really enjoyed it, very original.
Last one in theaters was Skyfall two weeks ago (I'm horrible at going to the movies). At home Fran and I watched Magic Mike. Can't recommend it, I actually found it quite dull. Nothing happened for two hours! No action, no drama, just people going about their lives.

We watched Magic Mike a few weeks ago as well, Joe. Enjoyed it but yeah, not much really happens. Curious as it was so well reviewed.
Total Recall.

Bryan - I just have to ask if the movie made you want to take your shirt off even more often than you already do? :roflmao

I tell you what, those guys put me to shame! I'm not even remotely built like that, I'm stick fgure next to those dudes. And Damn, McConaughey got himself in great shape for the role!
Duh, we also watched "Beasts of the Southern Wild" this past weekend. Odd little film.
Watched Looper from Redbox and fell asleep 1/4th the way into the movie. Which kind of says everything I need to say about the movie as I never fall asleep during a movie unless I'm watching it again and Im more tired/bored than I thought. It just felt dull and pandering to me. Don't consider this a review obviously, but it just hit all the wrong keys for me.
After that I saw Django Unchained and it's good. About as crazy and bloody as you would expect from Tarintino. It was a bit hard to watch in some places but if you want a gritty western, that's certainly one to watch.
I watched the Amazing Spider-Man on Saturday on Blu-Ray
The Odd Couple on Netflix, great old comedy. Love me some Matthau and Lemmon.

I've always enjoyed that film. Jack Lemmon was especially great!
Tonight we watched a sci-fi classic from 1956 called The Mole People. I really enjoyed this film more than I thought I would Granted the costumes for the Mole People are hokey by today's standards but it still worked if you remember this was a 50s sci-fi flick.
The basic premise of the film is that some archaeologists discover an ancient artifact that seems to point to an ancient Sumerian civilization that survived Noah's flood. The team journey on a dangerous epidition up a mountain and discover more evidence. One of the archaeologists fall through a hole into a deep cavern and the team climb in after him only to find he is dead. An earthquake traps the team down there but it results in them finding an ancient Sumerian culture who have enslaved the mole people to do their dirty work. It's kind of Edgar Rice Burroughs in it's style of storytelling but I found it quite entertaining. It's only around 1:20 long so it's fairly face paced.

Home sick, watched Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol. Real fun movie.

Yeah, I really liked that one. I recently saw "Moonrise Kingdom." A really quirky, off-beat, sweet coming of age movie. It's not like much else you've probably seen. But I enjoyed it a lot.
I actually enjoyed Ghost Protocol more than I thought I would. I hope they make another sequel.

I went to see Django Unchained and really liked it alot.
I've been debating seeing Unchained.
While I liked Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, his last film Inglourious Basterds was just meh.
If I can still find it, I'd like to the wacky double feature project he did with Robert Rodriguez called 'Grindhouse'.

Oh yeah, 'The last movie I watched'...
That would be Overboard w/ Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn

Indeed, you may not enjoy Django then, which is pretty much a thematic sequel to Inglorious Basterds. Grindhouse was awesome fun.

Ghost Protocol is on Netflix. I was surprised to see it on there. I need to watch 3 then catch Ghost.
Last movie I watched was Close Encounters of the Third Kind. I would give it a rating of 8 almost a 9. I watched the Director's cut on Blu-Ray from Netflix and it looked awesome! Then I finished listening to Rico's podcast on it. More about that on the Podcast page.
Hey, finally saw "Django Unchained." Really enjoyed it. I'll type more about it in that thread for the movie.
Saw Silver Linings Playbook last night...wow this was the most moving flick I've seen in a long time. Such a true to life depiction of mental illness I've never seen in film before, since maybe Shine back in the 90s. Highly recommended, probably my favorite non-genre film of the year.
