Title: Oblivion
Post by: Geekyfanboy on December 07, 2012, 10:46:03 AM
Don't know much about this.. but the poster was just released and looks cool.

here's what I got from IMDB

A court martial sends a veteran soldier to a distant planet, where he has to destroy the remains of an alien race. The arrival of an unexpected traveler causes him to question what he knows about the planet, his mission, and himself.

Hmm, looks intriguing.  Not a Tom Cruise fan, but I'll most likely check this one out - since the SciFi theme seems interesting.

No nothing to do with the game. It's based on a graphic novel written by one of the guys involved in this movie.

This is probably going to be the movie the wife and I see during our 25th Anniversary/vacation week. I'm glad she likes Sci-fi movies and I won't have to sit through a chick flick. She likes those she just doesn't want to pay $8 for a movie that would be pretty much the same on your tv.
I think this is going to be pretty good. And it has Morgan Freeman in it. He's a great actor.

You are lucky... I have to pay it forward with a chick flick for each geek flick.  :)

The nice thing is my son is getting old enough to enjoy the geek flicks with me now.

I have been pretty lucky with going to the movies. I won't say I have never been to some chick flicks with her but my "type" of movies far out weight the chick flicks. Plus she normally enjoys the movies almost as much as I do. I picked a good one! Or did she pick me?????

I went and saw this movie today and have to say I quite enjoyed it. I liked the premise of it, the Ship Tom Cruises character flew I thought was really cool as well. It was a real good looking movie and I thought the sound was really good as well, the plot was a bit weak in parts, but fi8nd we just don't get these types of movies all that often anymore. I know Tom Cruise can be a bit out there, but he appears in some good movies, and always seems solid.

Just got back from seeing this as well. Overall impression is a solid B-....
Visually it is stunning and that alone would have given it a C grade even if the whole movie was the FX shots and interiors and exteriors. They filmed in Iceland and it looks very much like Prometheus, even has what looks like the same waterfall! The first 45min. are very interesting, brooding. There's a lot of initial exposition and then as we are introduced to Jack and Victoria and there odd yet seemingly beautiful life in the clouds. The film at first seems to want to be a more introspective affair but half way through it seems it needs to be an action flick. And then it just sort of gives up. Jack is a clone, well that wasn't very interesting. The Road Warrior human survivors are generic and you don't really get behind them and Morgan Freeman is not well cast in the role he plays, he just doesn't sell it for me. It's a shame, it seemed like a really ambitious story that at the end, turned into a very blah one. But it really looks amazing and the acting in general is very good.
The wife and I both enjoyed this movie today and I would give it an 8. The wife says 7. I liked the story of the movie and like Rico said its not what you expected. Looked awesome and I really liked their "apartment". Tuesday the 23rd is our 25th Anniversary and we wanted to recreate our first date. Our original date was at Rax and we saw King Kong Lives. Well Rax was changed into a Tim Horton's and the movie theater moved into the mall and of course King Kong Lives wasn't playing. So we just got a sandwich each, to keep it cheap like the first date was, and then we went to see Oblivion. I do have King Kong Lives on DVD so we will catch it sometime this week. It is after all a love story.
I also really liked the ships and the drones and the fighting scenes were really good. I didn't see the clone thing coming and when he saw the other ship I first though it might be an alien. I had a little thought that it might look like him when he started running towards him. Really liked the scenes in the "apartment" and I do think Morgan Freeman was way under used. I also liked the blown up moon, very cool graphic. I also expected more when they met up with "Sally". That was a little bit of a let down for me but the explosion was awesome.
I just saw this - and I absolutely loved it.  I don't usually care to much for Tom Cruise, so this was a surprise to me.  :)

There are a few loose ends that I don't understand, but I thought it was a solid Sci-fi story - with stunning special effects.
They kept quoting one of my all time favorite poems ' Horatius At The Bridge' - so this really got me.  I read that once a year to my kids (under laughing protest by them I might ad!).  I loved seeing the 'King Slayer' (from Game of Thrones) in this movie.  I agree with other assessments that the chase scenes were very silly - and not at all needed.
Some ideas are derivative of a few Sci-Fi books I have read - and now I will have to read the graphic novel that inspired this movie..

I give this movie a 9 - or a solid A-
Thinking back on this movie wasn't there a mess up with him going up to the mother ship? Because he was in 52's ship and if I recall it was supposed to be 49 bringing the girl up. Wouldn't "Sally" know what ship was coming?

Yes, that was something a bit off in the story, I would assume Sally would see some key marker or be suspicious.  I wonder how many other.  I would have liked a bit more explained in the back story.  What didn't make sense to me was the timing of the Odyssey re-entering the atmosphere.  But I am willing to forgive the movie - and assume the novel had better explanations.
I am a bit alarmed to read that the graphic novel is 'unpublished'.  I was hoping to read it to fill in a few of the gaps.

One thought I did have about the movie that stuck with me a bit, maybe I did not pickup on it
When we found out Jack Harper was a clone of the Original, they mentioned at first they made Thousands of them as Soldiers to wipe out the Earth. After that they made them into Repair men after. If they rewrote their minds and wiped out the memories, then why bother with the Charade that they were real human beings? Why not just rewrite the clone as what he was, a repair man. I guess I did not really pick up on that. They kept asking if they were an effective team, and checking that they were still operating under a certain belief. Just did not see the point for it.
The movie suffers with a lot of issues like that....
1) Isn't this just Moon, only not nearly as good?

2) Why is cloning Tom Cruise and Andrea Riseborough and maintaining an elaborate charade involving lots of hardware and deception the most expedient way of maintaining an otherwise straightforward fleet of military attack drones? It would be much, much easier in terms of both work and resources to simply replace the drones.

3) Cruise's character witnesses kills made by drones. Why, in nearly five years of doing this job, has he never realised, upon viewing the bodies, that they're human?

4) Isn't there a massive risk for the alien intelligence that the underground resistance could contact the maintenance people at any time? Couldn't they just have left Harper a note, or something? Isn't the whole charade just laughably easy to circumvent?

5) Why do the human survivors use sound effects in order to sound like aliens? The only people they might hope to fool are a) an alien intelligence which knows exactly what they are, and b) the tower technicians, who they have no reason to deceive (see above).

6) Why does Harper's craft have the capability to reach orbit? The alien intelligence has no reason to have him actually visit, other than in exceptional circumstances, and this gives the humans the capability to reach and perhaps attack the alien, a capability they should never actually need. For that matter, why do the drones have the capability to reach orbit?

7) Harper's craft can easily reach orbit. Why can't everyone live on the "space station" and deorbit for work, or at least maybe go back on weekends? Why the five year mission? Well, we know why, but why wouldn't the alien expect the humans to query this?

Yes you both make good points.
I believe the muted voices was explained away as a means of encryption to keep Sally from picking up on their communications.  Just like the suits were 'stealth' technology of a sorts.  An American flag on the uniform would have told a lot...but then perhaps that would have just gotten the Jack in questin killed.

You are quite right that there had to have been many opportunities to communicate with the various Jacks.  But I am thinking that perhaps they were all just killed off by Sally or dimed out by the girl companion.  That is a stretch on my part.

I didn't quite understand the need for an army of Jacks when they have so many drones that could have done the work.

I am usually tough on movies like this - I am just glad for a serious attempt at a thoughtful idea.

Anything including Horatious at the Bridge goes up points in my scale!  :0
Yes, I agree, good points. I think I just went with it for most of the movie but
when the drone was scanning Jack I thought it was doing it to see if he was human but It was scanning for a clone. And again I was let down with the "Sally" reveal, I was expecting something a lot different from a triangle thing.
