This new monster/robot film from Guillermo del Toro is due out next July. Some interesting viral video's have been popping up from this film. Looks like fun.
Synopsis:
n the film, legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, start rising from the sea and begin a war that would takes millions of lives and consumes humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes-a washed up former pilot (Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Kikuchi)-who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.
Pacific Rim stars Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Idris Elba, Ron Perlman, and Charlie Day and is set to be released in 2D and 3D on July 12, 2013.

it's so funny that you just posted this Rico.. I was thinking to myself yesterday when I was catching up here that there wasn't a thread for this movie yet.
Looks awesome..
Looks good and I'm a big fan of Ron Perlman.
The Plot sounds kind of like 'Real Steel'.
That's my kind of movie. Can't to see it!

Yeah, my son mentioned the voice from "Portal" too. Movie looks like a ton of fun!
Robojocks meets Godzilla? Looks good to me. :)
OK, that looks pretty blasted good! Punch that monster right in the nose!!!!
I actually think this looks like it might be fun if the story is as good as the special effects look to be. Could turn out to be a lame Transforrners VS Godzilla knock off though. I'll wait for the reviews to come in before making plans to see it.

Some cool posters popping up for this. Kind of has a "Starship Troopers" vibe to some of the marketing campaign.
Really looking forward to this movie.

Just saw a negative prediction for this one - hard to believe but proof will be in the pudding:
http://variety.com/2013/film/box-office/pacific-rim-looking-grim-with-25-million-35-million-opening-1200560676/ (http://variety.com/2013/film/box-office/pacific-rim-looking-grim-with-25-million-35-million-opening-1200560676/)
fter spending the past two weeks trying to turn the tide for "Pacific Rim," Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures now are bracing for what appears to be a gruesome inevitability for the $185 million-plus monster movie: A domestic opening ranging between $25 million and $35 million.
This weekend could be the second in a row in which an expensive non-sequel property bellyflops at the box office after "Lone Ranger" flamed out last weekend.

The impending doom has been pretty clear ever since "Pacific Rim" came on tracking early last month. And while there are certainly some last-minute hopeful signs for Warner and Legendary to cling to (i.e. strong reviews and unreliable tracking lately), there's little chance that "Pacific Rim" will open well enough in the U.S. to counter its monster-sized budget and marketing costs.
FILM REVIEW: "Pacific Rim"
But before we delve into the negative, there are a few possible bright spots:
Positive reviews. As of Tuesday afternoon, the film has scored an 85% rating on RottenTomatoes, with a 98% rating among audiences who want to see the film. Exhibitor reactions to the film also have been better than expected.
Overseas. Warner launches "Pacific Rim" in 38 day-and-date territories, including the U.K., Mexico, Russia, South Korea, Italy and Australia.
Skewed tracking. "Pacific Rim" straddles the line of being a fanboy and family film, with heavy interest among boys, and tracking for younger auds is notoriously unreliable. Does that mean the film can double current projections? No.
Holiday frenzy. The buzz surrounding the Fourth of July weekend was still humming on Monday, when NRG — the most subscribed-to tracking service — released its most current weekend estimates. The company will revise those estimates Thursday.
All of those factors weigh in "Pacific Rim's" favor, particularly the first, after Paramount managed to parlay strong early reviews for "World War Z" into a surprising $66 million domestic opening.

But to be clear, an opening like that is not in the cards for "Pacific Rim" — not with competition from "Despicable Me 2″ and "Grown Ups 2," both of which also have strong family appeal. Observers predict that "Despicable Me 2″ will win its second frame in the high-$40 millions, while "Grown Ups 2″ is expected to gross in the low-$40 million range. Both "Grown Ups 2″ and "Pacific Rim" are rated PG-13.
For "Pacific Rim," which is a passion project for helmer Guillermo del Toro, the early July release date was likely modeled after "Transformers," which opened with $70 million in 2007. That's the kind of start Legendary expected to see when it greenlit the pricey ensemble project about an apocalyptic battle between aliens and robots created to fight them. But without a major star toplining the film, Warners — which came on board later to help finance 25% of the production cost — had to market the film based solely on the original concept. The studio only recently began highlighting the pic's humor and lighter elements to help draw interest.

Tracking for the film outside the U.S. is strongest in Asia, with the area's long history of creature features, but the pic is seeing only moderate interest in other parts of the world.
Some celebrities, including Kanye West, have taken to social media with positive reactions to the film. Videogame design icon Hideo Kojima also expressed his admiration in a tweet saying, "This film is not simply a film to be respected, but most importantly, it let us dream the future of entertainment movies."
The film's grim financial outlook notwithstanding, Kojima may have a point. If only the film's budget could have been kept in check.
This whole tracking story has been making the rounds for a few weeks since Variety ran it. It's a load of marketing crap, there are people at the studios who want this movie to fail but it's all politics and inside baseball. I think this one is going to be huge, ealry reviews of other film makers who have seen preview screenings have been glowing.
Going to a PGA pre-screening tonight.. I'll let you all know what I think (no spoilers)

cool, looking forward to your take.
Just got back from a pre-screening and... it was AWESOME!!!
No spoilers but it's exactly what you expect it to be.
I missed seeing the Lone Ranger but for now I'll skip it and see this!! Plus the wife said she would rather see Pacific Rim anyway.
Robojox meets Godzilla? :)
Pacific Rim:
Plenty of heart, a well balanced pace with great giant robot action. Characters who aren't the most dimensional characters in the universe, but are still memorable. No racial stereotypes crammed down my throat either, people felt realistic. The pacing is the ace to this movie. I didn't feel exhausted at the end of the movie like I did with Star Trek Into Darkness but not so wanting that I felt ripped off. Plenty of action scenes that I could follow unlike the entire Transformers series of action scenes. While some of the tech might be a bit unlikely for us to invent, it at least feels possible and the movie has a very realistic sense of scale that it sticks to the entire movie. I had lots of fun with this movie, which is everything I had been hoping for. It's a straightforward action movie that knows what it is and aces it's goals. Well done.
It also had a special effects team the size of an army lol.
Go see it. It's great for a giant robot battling movie. I think the last really great "battling giants" movie I saw was King Kong by Peter Jackson.
Pacific Rim: A better movie than Star Trek: Into Darkness.

:)
I haven't seen this yet but I doubt I will like it better than Star Trek Into Darkness. Looks like I'll be seeing this next weekend.
Wow, 3rd place and 38 mil on a budget of 190 mil. They didn't market this movie well enough past the built in geek audience. It's a shame.

I just added $6.00 to the weekend total. At the theater right now.

Wow.. $6 for a movie.. are you back in 1980? :)
I go to a lot of matinee movies during the day - seldom at night. I don't go for 3D films generally, or DBOX, or any of that other extra stuff. To me, when it costs more to see a movie once in a theater than it costs to own that movie they have gone too far. Oh, and back in 1980 I could see movies easily for $3-4.
Now, as far as the film itself I enjoyed it. This summer's transformers to me. Lots of what you see in the previews - lots of action. Pretty basic action film character types. The rival pilots, the hard nose commander, the love interest, etc. Effects were awesome. Cool, popcorn type of film for me.
Looking forward to seeing this when we get back from out trip! Doubt I will like it more then Into Darkness but I suppose that is because I am a mindless film sheep who only likes explosions and action...although not sure how Pacific Rim will be much different. :)
I saw it today, and really liked it a lot, just a heck of a lot of fun. Really liked the Characters, and the Robots were pretty awesome, I sure would like to pilot one of them. Sorry to hear it did not do well at the box office, but from the post earlier in the week, sounded like they were not really giving it a push for whatever reason. It was also limited in the theatres it was playing in, we really only had the option here of seeing it in the more expensive theatre, as they were not showing it in any of the regular theatres. They were alternating between 3D showings and regular showings in the same theatre.
This sort of reminds me of John Carter, where it did not do well at the box office, but was good movie. Part of me thinks that they have sort of over priced movies at this point, and with the amount coming out, people just can't afford to go to them every week. So with these blockbusters, people might not want to take a chance on something they don't know and stick with the franchises and the sequels. I know for myself, I have gotten a lot more picky on what I see now, as I look on average about $15 per person, and with my Wife and I that is $30 for a movie, and really to much to go every weekend.
Yep, they trusted too much in the geek audience, and not the average movie goer. I went with my boss to the movies on Friday, I suggested Pacific Rim, he went "What?" And he's a guy who went to see Trek and Man of Steel. He opted for WWZ, so thats what I saw. Weird marketing, screwed the pooch.
I saw it and was just okay with it. My boy (6) loved it though!
I'm not surprised it isn't making huge bucks. Lack of marketing and the fact it is quite a niche concept. I love the Japanese mega monster / transformers stuff so I'm sure I will like it.
Wow, just got back from Pacific Rim. Really disappointed. I can't for the life of me figure out how they got this wrong. The story had some interesting opportunities, especially the whole drift thing, that just never went anywhere. All the character moments lacked any emotion or impact as they were never "earned", they were just thrown in and it is assumed we have a connection to these people. And what is with all the running around to deliver information, did the Kaiju eat all the cell phones?! I did like Charlie Day but I am a "Always Sunny in Philadelphia" fan. Even the fights, though visually stunning, got boring and because they insist on hiding CGI warts by staging them at night, in the rain, and under water, I found them a bit muddled. I was so sure this would be a great one and figured the negative reviews and online comments had to be wrong. Unfortunately they were not and now I see why the US box office is so weak. The movie just isn't that strong.
Into Darkness is a masterpiece next to this.
We pretty much agree on this one Bryan. I might have enjoyed it a bit more than you. My biggest problem were all the cliche's in the film - especially the characters. It had some fun moments, but in the end pretty weak overall.

I had fun, I don't want to come across too negative, but I was REALLY excited for this one. I love monster movies like Godzilla although I am kind of ambivalent towards the giant robot thing, Transformers came out when I was too old. I hate to say it, but I am glad Del Torro didn't direct The Hobbitt.
Well, let's rest our giant monster hopes on the new Godzilla film!
